Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA KR2858 G3

In PVC window and door profile lines, KR2858 G3 is introduced as a coextruded capstock layer over rigid PVC where the substrate carries the profile geometry and the ASA capstock carries the weatherable pigmentation. The assembled profile is qualified under EN 12608-1:2016 for dimensional behaviour, while coloured surface retention is assessed under RAL-GZ 716/1 quality provisions using ISO 4892-2:2021 xenon-arc exposure and ISO 105-A02 grey-scale evaluation. The addition ratio on a line producing a total wall thickness of 2.2–3.0 mm specifies the ASA capstock at 0.4–0.8 mm, corresponding to 15–25% of total wall thickness and approximately 8–12 wt% of total profile mass. KR2858 G3 is pre-dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point lower than -30 °C, then fed to a dedicated capstock coextruder with a screw diameter of 35–45 mm and an L/D ratio of 30:1. The capstock melt temperature at the die entry is controlled at 230–250 °C, while the combined PVC-ASA melt is formed through a coextrusion die, vacuum calibrated in circulating water at 18–25 °C, and cut to length after cooling. Residual moisture above 0.05% in the capstock feedstock produces surface splay and risk of interlayer delamination at the die exit. Terminal finished product types include window main profiles, door outer frames, shutter slats, and coextruded exterior trim that require unpainted surface retention and corner-weld strength.

What Process Window Governs Injection Moulding of Unpainted Automotive Exterior Components in KR2858 G3?

Unpainted exterior parts are qualified with KR2858 G3 where the moulder must demonstrate weathering performance without paint or film lamination. Weathering is conducted under SAE J2527 and ISO 4892-2:2021 xenon-arc protocols, flammability is evaluated under FMVSS 302, and material compliance includes Directive 2000/53/EC end-of-life vehicle provisions and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. A black cowl vent grille tool runs a dryblend of 100 phr KR2858 G3, 2.0–3.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch at 40–50% pigment loading, 0.2–0.5 phr hindered amine light stabilizer, and 0.1–0.2 phr phenolic antioxidant; if a pre-coloured compound is supplied, the masterbatch addition drops to 0 phr and only a purging compound is added at changeover. Injection moulding is performed on machines with clamp force between 800 t and 1300 t for multi-cavity tools, using a three-zone screw with a non-return valve and an L/D ratio of 20:1–22:1. The melt temperature is maintained at 240–270 °C, the mould temperature at 40–80 °C, injection velocity at 60–120 mm/s, hold pressure at 40–60 MPa, and back pressure at 5–10 bar. Mould temperatures below 40 °C intensify knit-line visibility at boss intersections and reduce impact performance in side-impact tests. Terminal finished product types include exterior mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, grille surrounds, wiper arm covers, and B-pillar covers.

Coextruded ASA/ABS exterior sheet for agricultural machinery body panels uses KR2858 G3 as the weather-resistant cap layer over a high-impact ABS substrate, eliminating the need for post-mould painting. The formed part is evaluated under ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile properties, ISO 179-1:2010 for Charpy notched impact, ISO 4892-2:2021 for xenon-arc weathering, and ISO 6603-2 for puncture energy retention after exposure. In a sheet with substrate gauge of 2.0–4.0 mm, the ASA cap layer is run at 0.15–0.50 mm, yielding a cap fraction of 5–20% of total sheet thickness; where a textured surface is required, the capstock layer is thickened to 0.35–0.50 mm to prevent texture washout during thermoforming. Sheet production uses a flat-die coextrusion line with a main extruder screw diameter of 100–120 mm and L/D ratio of 32:1, a gear pump, and a cap extruder with diameter of 45 mm and L/D ratio of 25:1. Melt temperature at the feedblock is held at 240–260 °C, the roll stack is maintained at 85–100 °C, and the sheet is subsequently thermoformed at 180–210 °C surface temperature using plug-assisted vacuum forming. Published data for KR2858 G3 in this exact coextruded sheet configuration is limited; qualification is performed by sheet extrusion trials and weathering validation on the formed part rather than on injection-moulded plaques. Terminal finished product types include tractor roof shells, harvester engine side covers, golf cart body panels, and RV exterior compartment doors.

Outdoor Electrical Enclosure Tests Under IEC 62208 and UL 746C Conditions

Enclosures for electrical equipment exposed to direct sunlight are moulded in KR2858 G3 because the material permits unpainted housing production while retaining dimensional stability under radiant heat load. The housing is tested under IEC 62208 as an empty enclosure for low-voltage switchgear, with outdoor suitability evaluated under UL 746C including f1 exposure classification; ingress protection is rated under IEC 60529, commonly to IP66 for metering and disconnect boxes, and flame classification is UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm. A typical outdoor disconnect enclosure formulation uses 100 parts KR2858 G3, 3–5 wt% weathering stabilizer masterbatch, 2–4 wt% colour concentrate, and 0.1–0.3 wt% processing aid; glass fibre is not added to this grade in order to retain surface appearance and UV performance. Injection moulding is performed with clamp force from 650 t to 1200 t and a hot runner manifold with valve gates to reduce gate blush on visible surfaces. Melt temperature is controlled at 240–265 °C, mould temperature at 50–70 °C, screw back pressure at 5–10 bar, and part wall thickness is commonly 3.0–5.0 mm. Mould temperatures below 50 °C cause jetting and increase residual stress, which shortens UL 746C outdoor weathering retention. Terminal finished product types include solar inverter housings, telecom junction cabinets, outdoor meter enclosures, and disconnect switch bodies.

Because KR2858 G3 retains impact strength after prolonged UV exposure, outdoor furniture and spa shell manufacturers qualify the grade for high-contact exterior surfaces where chemical resistance to pool water, sunscreen, and alkaline cleaning agents is evaluated in parallel with colour retention. Structural seating components are tested under EN 581-1:2017 and EN 581-2:2015 for domestic and contract outdoor furniture, colour retention under UV fluorescent exposure is evaluated with ISO 4892-3:2016, and flexural properties are checked under ISO 178:2019. For injection-moulded chair components, the resin is metered at 100 parts with 2–3 wt% hindered amine stabilizer masterbatch and 1–3 wt% colour masterbatch; for thermoformed spa shells, the ASA cap layer is 0.3–0.6 mm over an ABS substrate of 3.0–6.0 mm, equivalent to 8–12% of total sheet thickness. Large spa shells are produced by coextrusion sheet followed by plug-assisted thermoforming and CNC five-axis trimming, while smaller structural components are injection moulded on machines with clamp force between 400 t and 800 t, melt temperature of 240–265 °C, and mould temperature of 45–70 °C. Terminal finished product types include spa shells, hot tub cabinets, pool step housings, garden chair frames, and table edge profiles.

When KR2858 G3 Replaces Painted Metal in Agricultural Machinery Roof and Body Panels

Agricultural machinery body panels that were previously fabricated from stamped and painted steel are candidates for KR2858 G3 in coextruded sheet form where corrosion, stone chipping, and UV exposure drive maintenance costs. Mechanical integrity is tested under ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile properties, ISO 179-1:2010 for Charpy impact, ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus, and ISO 6603-2 for puncture impact; weathering is validated with ISO 4892-2:2021 on the as-formed panel surface. A typical panel uses a cap layer of 0.4–0.8 mm over a substrate of 3.0–5.0 mm, representing 10–20% of total thickness, with black masterbatch added at 2 wt% when a mass-pigmented black surface is specified. Production involves flat-die sheet extrusion, roll-stack polishing, stress-relief annealing at 80–90 °C, plug-assisted thermoforming at 180–210 °C sheet surface temperature, five-axis trimming, and ultrasonic or hot-plate welding of reinforcement ribs. Published data for this exact painted-metal replacement configuration is limited; the converter’s thermoforming temperature profile must be set by differential scanning calorimetry on the as-supplied sheet. Terminal finished product types include tractor roof shells, combine harvester side panels, fender extensions, and agricultural battery covers.
