Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA 797SE

In automotive exterior mirror housing production, Luran S ASA 797SE is processed on injection moulding machines with screw L/D ratios between 18:1 and 25:1 and shot residence times kept below 5 min to avoid thermal decomposition in the barrel. Desiccant drying is set at 80 °C for 4 h; the target residual moisture is below 0.02 wt%. When plant relative humidity exceeds 60 %, drying time is extended to 6 h or insulated feed hoppers are used. Melt temperature is held between 250 °C and 270 °C. The nozzle temperature is capped at 260 °C, because dark molded-in-colour housings show yellowing when nozzle body temperature is excessive. Steel mould temperature is controlled at 50–70 °C through turbulent water channels. Cavity pressure transducers are placed at mid-flow length rather than directly behind the gate. Observed production failures in two-cavity mirror shell tools include gas burn marks at the mirror base boss when venting depth exceeds 0.03 mm; flash generation occurs below 0.02 mm. Vacuum-assisted venting around bosses and ejector pins is therefore used. Packing pressure is maintained at 60–80 MPa at the hot runner nozzle until gate freeze is confirmed by screw position stability, typically 8–10 s for a 2.0 mm nominal wall. Shrinkage compensation follows ISO 294-4:2018 with allowances of 0.5–0.7 %. The unpainted exterior surface is validated under SAE J2527:2017 at 0.55 W/(m²·nm) at 340 nm, black panel temperature 70 °C, for 1,000–1,500 h. Colour difference is assessed under ISO 11664-4:2008. Notched Charpy impact of the hinge boss region is measured under ISO 179-1:2010 at 23 °C after moulding and after 500 h at 90 °C. Terminal components include power-folding mirror housing shells, mirror base covers, and integrated LED indicator lens frames.

What Determines Low-Temperature Impact Validation in ASA 797SE Grille Apertures?

Knit-line integrity in ASA 797SE front grille mouldings is controlled by melt front temperature at the end of fill. Flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios up to 200:1 are achieved when the melt temperature at the advancing front remains above 245 °C. Mould temperature is held between 45 °C and 60 °C. Sequential valve-gate timing is driven by cavity pressure transducers; the second gate opens when the first melt front has crossed 60–70 % of the flow path length. On multi-cavity radiator grille tools, unbalanced runner systems can produce asymmetric valve gate opening; field corrections include adding flow restrictors in the shorter runner branch and shifting manifold temperature zones to equalise pressure within 15 %. The acrylic ester rubber phase in ASA does not contain butadiene double bonds, which retards UV-initiated chalking on black grille bars and chrome-edged apertures. Low-temperature impact is measured under ISO 179-1:2010 notched Charpy at −30 °C; OEM specifications commonly require a minimum value of 3.0 kJ/m² on specimens sectioned from the grille fence. Instrumented puncture under ISO 6603-2:2020 at −30 °C evaluates stone impact; a total energy above 5 J on 2.5 mm thick plaques is specified for a ductile failure mode. Hot runner melt temperature is profiled from 255 °C to 265 °C; hot spots above 280 °C cause surface streaking in dark grey and black molded-in-colour grades. Terminal products include radiator grille frames, lower bumper grilles, cowl vent grilles, and active grille shutter link covers. Drain slot features of 0.8–1.0 mm width require high injection velocity and short hold time to prevent flash along slot edges.

Where outdoor telecommunication junction enclosures require unpainted UV-stable housings with integrated snap-fit latches and cable gland sealing bosses, Luran S ASA 797SE is injected at melt temperatures of 240–260 °C and mould temperatures of 40–60 °C. The lower mould temperature range is used to shorten cycle time on 2.5–3.5 mm wall sections. Structural ribs are designed at 60 % of nominal wall thickness and corner radii are held above 0.8 mm to reduce stress whitening. Field returns on outdoor junction boxes have shown cracking at cable gland bosses when the gate insert temperature drops below 40 °C and no post-mould annealing is performed. In production, the gate insert is therefore maintained at 50 °C minimum and moulded shells are annealed at 80 °C for 2 h before assembly. Outdoor suitability is assessed under UL 746C; the final enclosure is tested for UV, water, and thermal ageing conditions defined by the end-product category. Ingress protection is validated to IEC 60529:2013; a typical target is IP65 or IP66 with sealing gasket compression between 25 % and 35 %. Salt spray exposure follows ISO 9227:2017 for 480 h on unpainted grey covers. Chemical resistance is acceptable against dilute sodium chloride and typical outdoor rain contaminants. Concentrated hydrochloric acid, acetone, and methyl ethyl ketone must be excluded from process and field contact. Terminal installed parts include FTTH distribution closures, poleside splice trays, smart meter face covers, and outdoor Wi-Fi access point housings.

Garden Tool Control Panels, Motor Shrouds, and Handle Trims Under Mechanical Vibration

Battery-driven string trimmer control panels and motor shrouds are moulded from Luran S ASA 797SE when the housing must survive assembly-line torque pulses and field vibration without cracked screw bosses. Melt temperature is set at 230–250 °C and mould temperature is held at 40–60 °C. For two-shot overmoulding with a styrenic block copolymer TPE, the ASA substrate is maintained above 120 °C at the interface before the second shot. Insufficient substrate cooling or premature mould opening produces peel failure at the TPE/ASA bond line when tested under ISO 34-1:2022. The moulder balances the hot runner for multi-cavity production and sets screw back pressure at 0.5–1.0 MPa to stabilise melt density and avoid shot-weight drift beyond 0.3 %. Vibration durability is tested under IEC 60068-2-64:2008; handle components are subjected to 0.5 g RMS acceleration with an acceleration spectral density profile across 20–500 Hz for 8 h per axis. Resistance to plant sap, ester-based chain lubricant, and petrol–alkylate fuel splash is evaluated by immersion under ISO 175:2010. Published data for this specific grade with benzene, toluene, and chlorinated solvents is limited, so field contact with aromatic hydrocarbons must be avoided. The unpainted ASA surface retains molded-in colour after outdoor UV exposure; specular gloss at 60° is measured under ISO 2813:2014 after 1,000 h xenon-arc exposure under ISO 4892-2:2013, Method A, Cycle 1. Terminal products include top handle covers, clam-shell motor housings, air intake grilles, and battery dock shrouds.

In building exterior air-path components such as roof vent louvres and heat pump side grilles, Luran S ASA 797SE is injection moulded for dark grey and white components exposed to direct sun, rain, and occasional hail impact. Melt temperature is set at 240–260 °C, mould temperature at 50–70 °C, and mould release only on textured cavity surfaces to preserve paint-free gloss. Builders of multi-cavity tools use full-round runner channels with diameter not less than 6 mm for louvre blades with 1.5 mm thickness and 150 mm flow length. UV durability is validated under ISO 4892-2:2013, Method A, Cycle 1, with total radiant exposure of 1,000 h at 0.51 W/(m²·nm) at 340 nm. Colour difference is assessed against ISO 11664-4:2008; targets below 2.0 ΔE are common in building product specifications. Shrinkage allowance follows ISO 294-4:2018 at 0.5–0.7 %. Failure modes observed in the field include fine cracks at screw bosses after freeze–thaw cycles; those parts are corrected by thickening the boss wall to 1.2 mm and adding 0.5 mm radii at the root. Terminal parts include ridge vent closures, soffit vent louvres, heat pump side grilles, and roof fan cowl covers.

When Unfilled ASA 797SE Replaces Painted ABS in Water Treatment Covers

When unfilled ASA 797SE replaces painted ABS in water treatment valve covers and pool strainer lids, the moulding window is adjusted for higher melt elasticity and different sink mark behaviour. Melt temperature is limited to 240–255 °C; mould temperature is set at 40–60 °C with conformal cooling channels where bosses exceed 2.0 mm nominal wall. The part is designed with 1.5° draft on textured vertical surfaces and minimum ejection area to reduce demoulding stress. Chlorinated water contact is evaluated under ISO 175:2010; specimens are immersed in 10 mg/L free chlorine solution at 23 °C for 7 days, after which notched Charpy impact is measured under ISO 179-1:2010. Published data for specific potable water certifications for this specific configuration is limited; each finished article must be qualified against the local drinking water approval before placement in a potable pressure boundary. The ASA component is not recommended for continuous pressure containment; in pool pump strainer lid applications it functions as a removable service cover outside the internal pressure vessel. Parts exposed to continuous wet service are annealed at 80 °C for 2 h before assembly to reduce moulded-in stress and stabilise dimensions under ISO 175:2010 exposure. Terminal components include filter actuator covers, chlorine dosing cabinet panels, pool pump strainer lids, and UV sterilizer end caps.

Marine instrument gauge housings and outdoor spa control bezels are injection moulded from Luran S ASA 797SE with a fast-ramp velocity profile to fill thin lens flanges and snap-fit retainers. Melt temperature is 235–255 °C; mould temperature is 40–60 °C. Salt mist exposure is tested under ISO 9227:2017 for 480 h on unpainted black bezels. Specular gloss at 60° is measured under ISO 2813:2014 after UV exposure under ISO 4892-3:2016. Published data for continuous saltwater immersion is limited, so the material is assigned to splash-zone and above-deck enclosures rather than subsea service. Terminal parts include gauge pods, helm panel trims, spa-side control bezels, and freshwater deck hatch frames.
