    Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA 778T SPF30 BK28214

Black injection-moulded exterior mirror housings, B-pillar garnish shells, and cowl-vent grilles are produced from 100% as-supplied Luran® S ASA 778T SPF30 BK28214 pellets without additional pigment masterbatch letdown; the BK28214 black colour designation and SPF30 package are already dispersed in the pellet matrix. Any dilution with unmodified ASA for flow improvement or gloss adjustment changes additive concentration and invalidates lot-level outdoor endurance data unless the moulder commissions a new ISO 4892-2 test series. Production regrind from sprues and rejected parts is restricted to 15–20 wt% only after ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact testing at 23 °C and -30 °C shows retention within 5% of virgin control values. Moulding is run on hydraulic or servo-electric injection machines with clamp force from 1,200 kN to 3,000 kN according to projected area, barrel set-points 240 °C to 260 °C, and tool temperatures 50 °C to 70 °C. The granulate is dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4 h to residual moisture below 0.02%, with a drying-air dew point not higher than -20 °C; splay and silver streaks at gate shrouds are the observed failure mode when drying time falls below 3 h in plants where ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. Mechanical lot checks use ISO 527-2 tensile testing, ISO 178 flexural testing, and ISO 1133-1 melt volume-flow rate for incoming-lot consistency. Automotive material compliance includes RoHS 2011/65/EU, REACH candidate-list screening, and end-of-life vehicle requirements under ELV 2000/53/EC Annex II where applicable. Terminal finished parts include door mirror shells, B-pillar garnish covers, roof-ditch mouldings, cowl-vent grilles, and wheel-arch spats.

Can a 0.3–0.8 mm ASA capstock layer over PVC window lineals retain impact at 23 °C after ISO 4892-2 weathering without a primer?

In coextrusion of window lineals, fascia boards, and soffit profiles, 778T SPF30 BK28214 is processed as the outer cap layer over an unplasticised PVC core, not as a blend with the core. The capstock stream is metered by a 45 mm or 54 mm conical twin-screw extruder feeding a coathanger slot die; the ASA layer is held at 5–10 wt% of total profile mass, which corresponds to 0.3–0.8 mm in most rectangular and multi-chamber profiles. The addition ratio is therefore 100% ASA pellets in the capstock stream, and no PVC regrind is reintroduced into the capstock stream because PVC contamination produces surface black specks and reduces the weather resistance of the outer skin. No external primer or adhesive tie layer is required for melt fusion at the ASA-PVC interface during coextrusion, provided coextrusion die temperatures do not fall below 220 °C. The ASA melt cylinder is set from 220 °C to 240 °C, and the slot die is kept at 220 °C to 235 °C; the profile is calibrated through water-cooled vacuum calibrators with water temperature 15–25 °C. Drying is required at 80 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant dryer with dew point below -20 °C. Weathering performance is evaluated by ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc exposure, impact by ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C, and heat resistance by ISO 306 Vicat B50. Profile systems are assessed against EN 12608 for PVC window profiles and EN 13501-1 fire classification where national building approval requires it. Published data for this exact BK28214 melt at cap thickness below 0.25 mm is limited, and profile extruders should validate gloss retention on the production die and calibrator before commercial release. Terminal products include window lineals, transom profiles, fascia boards, corner posts, and soffit ventilation profiles.

Outdoor electrical enclosure shells and non-current-carrying terminal box covers under UL 746C f1 and IEC 62208

Outdoor distribution boxes, solar combiner enclosures, and telecommunication node covers are injection-moulded from 778T SPF30 BK28214 at 100% as-supplied pellet feed. The formulation addition ratio for reprocessed material is more conservative than automotive trim; regrind is limited to 10–15 wt% because black enclosure colour consistency and impact strength after ISO 4892-2 ageing are part of the release dossier. Processing uses a servo-electric injection machine with barrel temperatures 230–250 °C, mould temperatures 40–60 °C, and screw back pressure below 50 bar to avoid excess shear heating. The material must be dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h to residual moisture below 0.03% because moisture-induced splay reduces the sealing-face quality required for IP65 rubber-gasket compression. This grade is non-flame-retarded ASA and should not be used where the finished wall must pass UL 94 V-0; its application is limited to enclosure shells and covers where HB performance and weathering resistance are sufficient. Conformity is checked against IEC 62208 for empty enclosures, IEC 60529 for ingress protection, UL 746C f1 for polymeric materials in outdoor-use equipment, and RoHS 2011/65/EU. Terminal articles include outdoor telecom distribution boxes, solar combiner-box covers, gate-controller enclosures, and non-current-carrying meter-box fronts.

For heavy-gauge thermoformed utility-vehicle hood upper skins and rear fender extensions, the limiting process variable is sheet surface temperature during forming rather than melt temperature in the extruder. Sheets are extruded from 778T SPF30 BK28214 on a single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D and a three-roll calendering stack; melt temperature is controlled at 230 °C to 250 °C, while calender roll temperatures are set at 80 °C, 90 °C, and 95 °C in downstream order. The pellet feed is 100% as-supplied, and edge-trim regrind is reintroduced into the middle layer of a multilayer sheet at not more than 20 wt%; if the regrind is blended into the surface layer, the proportion is limited to 10 wt% to maintain gloss and outdoor colour retention under ISO 4892-2. The sheet is heated in a quartz or ceramic infrared oven until the surface reaches 160–180 °C; below 160 °C, deep-draw features show stress whitening, and above 180 °C, black sheet surfaces develop sag marks and non-uniform wall thickness. Vacuum forming or twin-sheet forming is performed on steel or aluminium tooling with tool temperature 70–80 °C and vacuum capacity not less than -0.8 bar. Mechanical qualification uses ISO 527-2 tensile, ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact, and ISO 75-2/A heat deflection temperature. Outdoor UV resistance is tested by ISO 4892-2, and material restrictions are reviewed under REACH and RoHS 2011/65/EU. Terminal articles include utility-vehicle hood upper skins, fender extensions, battery-compartment covers, and engine shrouds.

When Luran® S ASA 778T SPF30 BK28214 is specified for marine hatch surrounds, shore-power cable sockets, and pontoon access panels

Marine hatch surrounds, shore-power cable sockets, and pontoon access panels are produced from 778T SPF30 BK28214 where unpainted ABS grades fail in salt-spray and high-moisture exterior service. The material is processed at 100% virgin pellet feed, and regrind is limited to 15 wt% only when lot-level ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact testing at -30 °C shows no more than 5% loss versus virgin material. Injection moulding uses barrel temperatures 240–260 °C and tool temperatures 45–65 °C; for thermoformed panels, sheet surface heating is held at 165–175 °C. Drying is at 80 °C for 4 h with drying-air dew point below -20 °C, because residual moisture above 0.02% causes surface defects at weld lines and sealing ribs. Environmental testing includes ISO 4892-2 or ISO 4892-3 for UV ageing, ISO 175 for chemical resistance, and salt-spray exposure according to ISO 9227 where required by boat-builder specifications. The finished products are hatch surrounds, access-panel frames, cable-gland covers, locker lids, and pontoon deck access covers.
