On a two-cavity polished-steel mirror-housing tool with a projected area of 460 cm², Luran S 777ME is processed at a melt temperature of 248–255 °C and a mould temperature of 60–70 °C. The resin is pre-dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4 h to a residual moisture below 0.05 %, because surface splay on an unpainted exterior automotive skin cannot be corrected by a downstream paint layer. The formulation is a neat ASA matrix let down with 1.2 wt% carbon black masterbatch; no additional UV absorber package is used because the acrylate elastomer phase and the base stabilisation of the grade are intended for exterior exposure. Published datasheet ranges place tensile modulus at 2400–2600 MPa under ISO 527-2, notched Charpy impact at 7–9 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C, and MVR at 22–28 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1 using 220 °C and 10 kg. The housing is joined to a mounting bracket by vibration welding at 240 Hz with 1.0 mm peak-to-peak amplitude. The primary production failure mode observed during trials is crack initiation at the base of the mounting-tower boss after weld-bead flash is trimmed. To eliminate that failure, the boss wall-to-nominal-wall ratio is held at 2.2:1, and the gate is relocated from the boss crown to an edge fan gate positioned 8 mm from the boss side wall so that the radial fountain flow cannot place a low-orientation weld line in the boss core. The terminal component is an unpainted exterior mirror housing validated against ISO 4892-2 Cycle 2 xenon-arc exposure; published data for this specific configuration is limited, but black ASA grades of this type are typically accepted when ΔE after 1500 h remains below 3.0 against the unexposed control.
Luran S 777ME is moulded into corner keys that join uPVC casement window sash sections; the key has six snap-fit detents and a wall thickness that transitions from 1.8 mm at the detent flexure to 4.0 mm at the central web. The acceptance criterion for cold-climate window hardware is a notched Charpy impact of not less than 5 kJ/m² at −30 °C according to ISO 179-1/1eA, with specimens milled from the moulded detent zone. At 23 °C the published notched Charpy range for this grade is 7–9 kJ/m²; low-temperature published data for this specific moulded configuration is limited, but the acrylate elastomer phase in ASA maintains a lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature than general-purpose ABS. The hot-runner system uses a single valve-gate drop placed at the central web so that the flow-front geometry forces the weld line into the thick web rather than the flexing detent. Melt temperature is set at 242 °C and mould temperature at 55 °C; fill time is limited to 0.9 s to avoid freeze-off in the 1.8 mm detent wall. The compound is coloured with 0.8 wt% brown masterbatch to match RAL 8014 and contains no filler or processing aid. The terminal product is a snap-fit corner key for uPVC casement windows, installed at mullion corners and exposed to UV through the vinyl section. Weathering of the moulded key is assessed under ISO 4892-2 Cycle 2 for 1000 h; colour change is reported as ΔE against the unexposed control.
In solar inverter enclosures installed on coastal rooftops, the front cover is exposed simultaneously to salt spray, UV, and internal heat from power semiconductors, so the material must combine outdoor suitability with stable low-shrinkage moulding over a 650 mm × 420 mm projected area. Luran S 777ME is injection-compression moulded into a 2.8 mm-thick front cover with a 1.5 wt% titanium dioxide masterbatch to achieve RAL 7035 light grey. The process uses six valve-gated hot drops, a melt temperature of 255 °C, a mould temperature of 70 °C, and a compression stroke of 0.6 mm after volumetric filling to reduce orientation and warpage. The grade is rated UL 94 HB and is processed without flame-retardant additives; outdoor suitability under UL 746C must be verified on the finished enclosure because the listing is part-specific. A calcium stearate-free formulation is used to avoid corrosion of copper busbars when the enclosure is sealed and internal condensation occurs. The enclosure is tested under IEC 62208 for empty enclosures and under IEC 60529 to reach IP65 after the cover is clamped with an EPDM gasket. Processor data indicate clamp force is held at 520 t with a hold pressure of 45 MPa, and cooling time is 28 s. The terminal product is an unpainted solar inverter front cover that carries the UL 746C outdoor-use marking when the moulder has completed the prescribed tracking and wall-thickness qualification.
A four-cavity tool with collapsible cores produces an irrigation valve manifold containing three 1/2 in NPT threaded bosses. The part is moulded from Luran S 777ME at a melt temperature of 250 °C and a mould temperature of 65 °C. Because the threaded bosses are post-machined with a forming tap, the formulation includes 0.5 wt% of a silicone-based friction modifier masterbatch but no external lubricant that would affect plastic pipe thread sealant adhesion. The wall thickness at the boss root is 5.3 mm, and effective holding pressure is 55 MPa for 9 s to avoid sink marks behind the thread. Tap torque for the 1/2 in NPT insert is limited to 4.5 N·m; production trials show that thread-forming at higher torque produces micro-crazing at the boss root after 24 h. The part is exposed to chlorinated water at 1.2 bar line pressure and direct sunlight; ASA resists oxidative degradation of the surface under ISO 4892-2 Cycle 1 for 1500 h. No published multi-cavity data for this exact threaded configuration are available, so the weathering evaluation is performed on moulded witness coupons from the same cavity set. The terminal product is a valve manifold for drip-irrigation laterals, using 3/4 in female solvent-weld connections and one 1/2 in NPT pressure-gauge port, with all threads produced after moulding to avoid tool damage.
For battery-powered leaf blower housings, the combination of thin-wall filling and drop-test performance after UV ageing determines material selection. Luran S 777ME is injection-moulded into a 780 mm-long housing with nominal wall thickness of 2.2 mm, using a single edge gate and an 820 t hydraulic clamp machine. Melt temperature is set at 252 °C and mould temperature at 58 °C. To prevent gas traps at the screw-boss ribs, the tool is vacuum-vented at 0.8 bar through four porous steel inserts; the vent inserts are cleaned every 5000 cycles. The formulation is coloured orange with 1.0 wt% masterbatch and contains no recycled content because the power-tool manufacturer requires UL 94 HB consistency across colour lots. Impact assessment is conducted at −10 °C after 500 h of ISO 4892-2 Cycle 2 exposure; the acceptance criterion is an instrumented puncture energy of 6.8 J under ISO 6603-2 using a 12.7 mm hemispherical striker. The grade’s MVR of 22–28 cm³/10 min allows the long housing to fill from a single edge gate; process capability studies on production equipment indicate that holding pressure must remain above 38 MPa to prevent sink marks at the handle boss. The terminal product is a battery-powered leaf blower housing assembled to a PMMA battery retainer and a polycarbonate debris tube; ASA is selected over general-purpose ABS because the outdoor-stored tool retains impact after repeated UV exposure without painting.
