In the plenum chamber between the windscreen and the hood, the injection-moulded cowl vent grille specified in Luran® S ASA 777K SPF30 BK61066 must carry snow load, engine-bay heat, ozone, and continuous UV irradiance without paint. The material is introduced as pellet feedstock into a dehumidifying hopper dryer set to 80 °C for 4 h; the drying air dew point is held at or below -30 °C, and the return-air temperature is monitored to detect bridging. Residual moisture is kept below 0.05 wt% before the melt phase. Processing takes place on a single-stage injection moulding machine with a three-plate cold runner tool; nominal wall thickness is 2.5 mm, increasing to 4.0 mm at the louvre ribs. Melt temperature is controlled in the range 240–260 °C. The lower bound is preferred because the BK61066 carbon black package and the acrylate rubber phase can generate black specks and shear heating when the melt is overheated or held beyond 6 min. The tool is tempered with water at 60–80 °C; mould temperatures below 40 °C are outside the process window because they suppress grain replication and reduce the weld line strength at the rib junctions. Hold pressure is set at 60–70% of the peak injection pressure, and the melt cushion is maintained between 3 mm and 6 mm to avoid packing variation. Screw back pressure is held between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa, and screw rotation speed is limited to 40–80 min⁻¹ to manage shear heat. Regrind ratio is limited to 20 wt% of clean sprues and runners, and it is metered through a gravimetric blender to avoid accumulation of degraded material. The finished cowl vent grille is assembled with EPDM sealing gaskets and nylon push-in clips. Weathering validation follows ISO 4892-2, Method A, Cycle 1, with xenon arc exposure at 0.50 W/m² at 340 nm, black-panel temperature 65 °C, and a commonly applied OEM acceptance criterion of ΔE*ab ≤ 3.0 against the unexposed moulded surface. Dimensional stability after heat ageing is checked according to ISO 294-4; the long-term service temperature for ASA grades of this type is generally below 105 °C, and exposure above that temperature should be reviewed for stress relaxation at clip towers.
Injection moulding trials on exterior rearview mirror housings and B-pillar appliqués show that the surface requirement is a piano-black appearance that remains stable without a paint film. In that context, Luran® S ASA 777K SPF30 BK61066 is moulded in polished cavities; the core and cavity plates are hardened to 52 HRC, and the cavity surface is diamond milled to a gloss level equivalent to SPI A-2. The gate location is placed at the thickest section near the mirror mounting boss to avoid free-jet formation. A 25 mm diameter, 20:1 L/D general-purpose screw with a smear-tip check ring is used. Melt temperature is set to 250–270 °C; the higher band is needed for filling thin-wall sections of 1.8 mm but increases the tendency for gas streaks and silver streaking if moisture is present. Drying is identical: desiccant drying at 80 °C for 4 h, with dew point at or below -30 °C. The mould temperature is 70–85 °C, and the cooling circuit uses a separate temperature-control unit with flow 30–60 L/min per half to reduce asymmetric shrinkage. Injection fill time is short, in the range 0.6–1.2 s, but the screw is not allowed to exceed 120 mm/s linear speed. Cooling time is set at 20–30 s depending on wall thickness at the mounting boss. Hold-pressure profiling is configured in three stages: 55% for 1.5 s, 70% for 5 s, and 40% for the remaining gate-freeze time. The process result is measured by gloss retention; OEM validation uses ISO 2813 for 20° and 60° gloss. Regrind content is limited to 15 wt% for the visible surface layer, and the feed system is purged with virgin grade before the production run to prevent black-gloss contamination. The terminal component is assembled with a polypropylene mounting frame and an induction-welded glass lens. Selective compatibility tests use ASTM D543 against windscreen washer fluid, road salt, and acid rain; resistance is qualified by mass change below 2% and no visible blistering. When the mirror housing includes an integrated turn signal aperture, the long-term exposure test is extended with ISO 4892-2 for 1500 h, and the colour shift is measured against the original moulded plaque.

The replacement calculation is based on mass reduction, corrosion resistance, and the elimination of post-coating logistics, but the polymer must satisfy the same outdoor mechanical and ingress-protection requirements as a coated steel enclosure. The black ASA grade is injection-moulded into side panels with a nominal wall thickness of 3.5–4.5 mm. The tool uses a sequential valve-gate hot runner with 4–6 drops per panel to control weld line location away from the corner bosses. The moulding machine is sized for a projected area of approximately 0.7 m²; with a conservative cavity pressure assumption of 35 MPa, the required clamping force is approximately 24,500 kN, but this calculation must be verified with the actual tool layout. Melt temperature is managed at 240–265 °C, with the hot runner manifold temperature kept within 5 °C of the nozzle to avoid material hold-up and black speck formation. The mould temperature is set to 60–80 °C. Because the side panel is flat, differential shrinkage causes warpage; the cooling circuit is designed with conformal cooling geometry or alternating high-turbulence channels at 200 mm pitch. The process is validated by measuring dimensions according to ISO 294-4; free-standing panels are conditioned at 23 °C and 50% RH for 24 h before measurement. Weatherability follows ISO 4892-2, Method A, Cycle 1, with 3000 h xenon arc exposure for long-life infrastructure. Impact resistance at low temperature is checked by ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact; ASA grades of this type typically maintain ductility below -20 °C, but published data for this specific configuration is limited and demands lot-specific validation. Regrind ratio is kept at 20 wt% or lower. The terminal assembled cabinet is tested to IEC 62208 for empty enclosures, including resistance to UV, water ingress, and mechanical impact. Gaskets and cable glands are specified separately; the ASA shell contributes to IP55 or higher only when the sealing system is correctly designed.
In ventilation louvres and motorised flap valves, the part must resist UV exposure on the roof, temperature fluctuations from -20 °C to 80 °C, and frequent mechanical actuation. ASA 777K SPF30 BK61066 is injection-moulded with a wall thickness of 2.0–3.2 mm; louvre blades are moulded in pairs with a common sprue to balance the cavity filling. The tool runs with 100% unfilled ASA; no glass-fibre concentrate is added because fibres create surface bloom after weathering. Melt temperature is set to 240–260 °C; high-flow characteristics allow filling of blade edges with a flow length-to-thickness ratio above 150:1. Mould temperature is set at 60–80 °C; a mould temperature below 55 °C increases the release of the carbon black pigment on the surface and creates a low-gloss, chalky layer after 12 months of outdoor exposure. Back pressure is maintained at 0.5–1.0 MPa, and shot size is kept at 50–80% of the barrel capacity to limit residence time. Regrind ratio for louvre blades is limited to 30 wt% because the hidden surface does not carry a Class A requirement; for visible flap-valve outer frames it is reduced to 15 wt%. Weathering compliance is benchmarked against ISO 4892-2 for 2000 h; the acceptance criterion is a yellowness index change of less than 2.0 units and gloss retention above 80% measured according to ISO 2813. Creep in the louvre support pins is checked by ISO 899-2 flexural creep at 60 °C under 5 MPa stress. The terminal unit is assembled with an actuation motor bracket made of glass-filled PP; the ASA blades are assembled by snap-fit but the snap hooks are designed with a minimum draft angle of 1° and a minimum root radius of 0.6 mm to avoid environmental stress cracking from installation.
If unpainted black side covers replace painted ABS or sheet metal on agricultural equipment, the polymer must tolerate diesel fuel, hydraulic oil, fertiliser salts, pressure washing, and high solar gain on a horizontal surface. Luran® S ASA 777K SPF30 BK61066 is processed by injection moulding in large parts with a wall thickness of 3.0 mm to 5.0 mm; gas counter pressure or low-pressure structural processing is not required for the solid grade. The melt is injected at 235–255 °C; the upper temperature is reduced compared with thin-wall applications because larger shot weights lead to longer residence time. A low-compression screw with a 20:1 L/D ratio and a reverse-taper nozzle is used to avoid drool at the barrel nozzle. Mould temperature is held at 40–70 °C, with the lower value used where high dimensional accuracy is less important than cycle time. The tool surface is textured to VDI 3400 reference 24–27, which hides flow lines and maintains a matte black finish. Drying remains mandatory at 80 °C for 4 h; agricultural plants in humid environments often require 6 h when the granulate has been stored in unheated silos in winter. Regrind ratio is kept at 25 wt% maximum, and any contaminated rework from oil exposure is excluded. Chemical resistance is assessed by ISO 175 for immersion in diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, and 10% urea solution; conditional immersion is performed at 23 °C and 60 °C for 7 days. The acceptance criterion is no cracking, no delamination, and a mass change below 1.5%. For UV and thermal stabilisation, the black colour code BK61066 provides a carbon black loading that extends weathering life, but validation against ISO 4892-2 for 2500 h is still performed because agricultural equipment may remain outdoors for 10 years. The terminal part is a side cover with integrally moulded louvres, a hinge boss, and a logo pad; it is assembled with stainless steel fasteners rather than nylon rivets because creep between polymer and fastener under thermal cycling can be higher than expected. If customer-specific fuel contact is not covered by these standard tests, published data for this specific ASA colour compound in that fluid is limited and qualification plaques should be tested before cutting the production tool.
Outdoor electric vehicle charging station enclosures require a black UV-stable housing that maintains electrical clearances and connector alignment after solar load, rain, and vandalism-level impact. The ASA grade is injection-moulded in a two-part shell with nominal wall thickness of 2.8 mm to 3.8 mm; the front frame may be moulded with a single direct sprue, but the rear shell uses a fan gate with a width of 8 mm to prevent jetting. Melt temperature is set at 245–265 °C; the mould is maintained at 60–80 °C using a pressurised water unit, and the cooling time is set at 25–40 s based on the thick sections around the connector cut-outs. The processing window requires pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h and a residual moisture level below 0.05 wt%. A three-stage hold-pressure profile starts at 60% of peak pressure, drops to 45%, and returns to 55% to reduce sink marks at the bosses. Dimensional certification is performed according to ISO 294-4 after conditioning for 48 h at 23 °C and 50% RH; the total shrinkage is monitored against the tool dimension. Weatherability for outdoor electronics uses ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 with 2500 h exposure; the colour shift is specified at ΔE*ab ≤ 3.0, and gloss retention is above 75% for a textured surface. The moulded enclosure is assembled with a polycarbonate screen cover and silicone gaskets; the ASA shell contributes to the IP rating and mechanical strength. Impact testing follows IEC 62262 for IK09 or IK10 depending on the public access location; the Charpy notched impact of the ASA material is measured by ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C and -30 °C. Regrind ratio for the rear shell is limited to 20 wt%; the front frame is moulded with 15 wt% maximum. The terminal product is the finished charging station housing, powder-free and without painting, which is assembled to the electrical chassis with brass inserts that are pressed in after moulding. If the housing is installed above 2000 m altitude or in direct marine salt spray, additional test protocols from ISO 9227 or customer-specific requirements are applied.
