INEOS Styrolution Luran® S ASA 776SE is an acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate extrusion and injection-moulding grade whose exterior durability is governed by the saturated acrylic ester elastomer phase rather than by aromatic double-bond oxidation. The downstream scenarios below are limited to production-scale sectors where this grade is specified as a ready-to-mould or ready-to-extrude feedstock: unpainted automotive exterior trim, window profile capstock, outdoor electrical enclosures, garden power tool housings, and cooling tower louvres.
A 100-virgin ASA formulation based on INEOS Styrolution Luran® S ASA 776SE is processed for black unpainted exterior mirror housings, cowl vent grilles and A-pillar garnish panels where a 10-year outdoor service life under direct solar load is the minimum OEM requirement. The material approval file for these components is built on ISO 4892-2:2013, Method A, Cycle 1 xenon-arc exposure with a pass/fail criterion typically expressed as ΔE ≤ 1.5 against a moulded master plaque after 2,500 h, and ISO 179-1/1eU Charpy notched impact measured at 23 °C and −30 °C before and after thermal ageing, with specimens conditioned according to ISO 291. Because 776SE is a ready-for-use high-impact ASA, no external impact modifier is required in the formulation; clean in-house regrind is introduced at no more than 25 wt% with 1.5–2.0 wt% carbon-black masterbatch, and all constituents are pre-dried at 80 °C for 4 h to a moisture concentration below 0.02%. Processing on a reciprocating single-screw injection-moulding machine with a 20–22 L/D barrel and 2.2–2.5:1 compression-ratio screw uses a melt-temperature profile of 240–255 °C and a mould temperature of 60–80 °C; the fill time for a 2.5 mm nominal wall is held at 1.2–1.8 s because hesitation at the cowl-vent knit lines reduces notched impact at the seam to below the OEM acceptance limit. After demoulding, the parts are checked for gloss variance; regrind addition above 30 wt% is outside the documented stable process window because it shifts the surface gloss and widens batch-to-batch Charpy data beyond the capability of the gauge repeatability study. The resulting components are unpainted black and dark-grey exterior trims, including mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, wiper arm covers and A-pillar outer garnish panels.
Coextrusion of Luran® S ASA 776SE as a capstock over a PVC-U core is used where the finished window, door frame or fascia board must withstand south-facing façades without painting. The compliance statement for the extruded profile references EN 12608-1:2016 for unplasticized PVC profiles and RAL-GZ 716 for quality-assured PVC-U window systems; weathering is assessed under ISO 4892-2:2013 with a residual grey-scale rating of ≥4 according to ISO 105-A02 after 6,000 h of xenon-arc exposure. In high-white profiles the capstock layer is compounded with 3–5 wt% titanium-dioxide-grade masterbatch and 0.1–0.3 wt% processing aid, and the capstock thickness is maintained at 0.45–0.75 mm, which corresponds to roughly 20–25% of the total wall section. The coextrusion line uses a counter-rotating twin-screw main extruder for the PVC-U core and a 24–28 L/D single-screw coextruder for the ASA capstock; the capstock melt enters the profile die at 215–235 °C, with vacuum calibration downstream at line speeds of 6–14 m/min. Layer thinning below 0.40 mm creates localised UV penetration risk and colour shift on the underlying core, while melt temperatures above 245 °C cause yellowing of white capstock at the PVC interface. The finished products are fully fabricated window profiles, door frames, balcony cladding and fascia board cappings that are supplied as ready-to-install exterior building components.
Moulded outdoor disconnect switch housings and telecommunication cabinet louvers are specified in Luran® S ASA 776SE when the final assembly must carry a UL outdoor suitability listing. The controlling standard is UL 746C f1, which requires UV exposure and water immersion before electrical and mechanical property retention are evaluated; the material class is additionally reported as UL 94 HB, and the final enclosure is tested for ingress protection under IEC 60529:2013 to IP65 when a sealed joint is used. The formulation remains neat except for 2.0 wt% carbon-black masterbatch for dark-coloured components or 2.5–3.5 wt% titanium-dioxide masterbatch for light-grey enclosures; where the design requires a tensile modulus above 2,800 MPa, a glass-fibre-reinforced ASA masterbatch is compounded at 15–20 wt%, although the flow path must then be revalidated because the fibre content moves the shrinkage from 0.4–0.6% down to 0.2–0.3% and creates gate-area anisotropy. Injection moulding is conducted with a melt temperature of 240–260 °C, a mould temperature of 60–80 °C, and a minimum wall thickness of 1.2 mm around the screw bosses to avoid sink marks; pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h is mandatory when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. The process risk is not melt flow but post-mould moisture absorption that can raise the moisture content above 0.03% and create blistering in UL 746C water-immersion conditioning. The terminal parts are outdoor electrical enclosures, weatherproof switch boxes, telecommunication cabinet ventilation louvers and pole-mount junction enclosures.
When grass-trimmer and leaf-blower housings are moulded in Luran® S ASA 776SE, the process window is defined not by UV resistance but by low-temperature impact retention after the first winter season. The compliance file for the housing follows EN 60745-1:2009 for hand-held motor-operated electric tools and EN 60335-1:2012 where the unit is classified as a garden appliance; weathering is tracked under ISO 4892-2:2013 and impact retention is measured by ISO 179-1/1eU after outdoor ageing. The formulation uses 20 wt% clean in-house regrind, 0.5–1.0 wt% colour masterbatch, and no additional impact modifier because the base grade already carries the acrylic ester elastomer phase; external lubricants are limited to ≤0.2 wt% because higher levels cause screw slippage and variable shot weight on high-speed machines. The housings are moulded on accumulator-assisted injection-moulding machines with clamp forces from 1,500 kN to 4,500 kN; the barrel is set at 240–260 °C, the mould is held at 50–70 °C, and the fill velocity is raised until the flow front reaches the handle bosses within 0.6–1.0 s to eliminate hesitation lines. Gas-assisted injection is used for the hollow handle transition when the wall thickness drops from 2.5 mm to 1.0 mm over a 15 mm length; this geometry is the main cause of batch-to-batch impact-value scatter if the gas delay time is not held within 0.2 s. The output is grass-trimmer motor covers, leaf-blower impeller shrouds and garden vacuum housings supplied as ready-to-assemble coloured outer casings.
Unlike architectural profile coextrusion, cooling tower louvers are produced as single-material ASA extrusions in which dimensional stability under hot, humid air is the primary acceptance criterion. Service validation follows ISO 4892-2:2013 for weathering, ISO 179-1/1eU for impact, and ISO 75-2:2013 HDT/A for heat deflection; the grade is processed with 3–4 wt% titanium-dioxide masterbatch in light-coloured louver profiles to reduce solar heat absorption, or 2.0 wt% carbon-black masterbatch in graphite-grey units. The extrusion line uses a single-screw extruder with 24–28 L/D barrel and a profile calibration table that holds the ASA melt at 225–245 °C; line speed is set between 2–5 m/min for hollow multi-wall louver sections because cooling rates above 10 °C/min at the surface produce residual stress that manifests as bowing after installation. The critical operational boundary is continuous exposure to air above 70 °C; published data for long-term mechanical performance of ASA 776SE in that specific configuration is limited, so sustained hot-air service above that threshold requires pilot-scale validation against the actual louver geometry rather than extrapolation from short-term HDT data. The finished products are extruded cooling tower air-intake louvers, HVAC weather louvres, and exhaust-air louvres that are cut, assembled into frames, and shipped as ventilated façade components.
