The rejection rate of unpainted exterior trim components is controlled by four variables: moisture content of the dried granules, cavity surface temperature uniformity, melt-temperature overshoot during plastication, and weld-line location in thin-wall grille geometries. Luran® S 776S is processed as supplied at 100 wt% for high-gloss mirror housings and cowl vent grilles; a colour masterbatch is added at 2 wt% to 3 wt% and is dispersed using a screw with L/D 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. Closed-loop regrind from sprues and runners may be introduced at ≤20 wt% only after melt volume-flow rate is re-checked by ISO 1133-1:2022 and notched impact is re-checked by ISO 179-1:2010; ABS regrind is limited to ≤15 wt% because higher ABS fractions shift xenon-arc colour retention below OEM acceptance levels. Drying is carried out in a desiccant dryer with dew point ≤ -30 °C at 80 °C for 4 h, yielding residual moisture ≤0.05 wt%; production sites operating at RH > 60% extend drying to 6 h. Melt temperature is maintained at 250 °C to 260 °C, and the upper limit is fixed at 270 °C because the acrylate rubber phase undergoes visible yellowing and gloss loss above that threshold. Mould temperature is held at 70 °C to 80 °C for Class-A unpainted surfaces; lowering mould temperature below 60 °C produces flow marks and a 60° gloss reduction measured by ISO 2813. The injection velocity profile is set to 80 mm/s to 120 mm/s, holding pressure is 40 MPa to 60 MPa, and screw back pressure is 5 bar to 10 bar. Hot-runner valve gates with tip diameters of 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm are used; vented cavities with vent depth 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm prevent burn marks at the end of fill. Compliance for exterior trims is anchored to ISO 19065-1:2014 ASA designation, ISO 527-2:2012 tensile, ISO 178:2019 flexural, ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 xenon exposure with daylight filter, 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm, black-panel 65 °C ± 3 °C, 102 min dry and 18 min water spray, and colour change assessed by ISO 105-A02 grey scale. Automotive validation usually adds SAE J2527 or an OEM-specific test based on the same apparatus. Terminal finished product types include exterior mirror housings, cowl vent grille frames, B-pillar outer appliqués, radiator grille garnish frames, and tailgate mouldings. The main production-scale failure mode is not mechanical cracking but gate blush and jetting in thin ribs; correction requires a pressure-limited filling curve and a cavity pressure transducer, not simply raising melt temperature.
| Part wall thickness | Melt temperature | Mould temperature | Gate diameter | Holding pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.0–2.4 mm | 255–265 °C | 70–80 °C | 0.8–1.0 mm | 50–60 MPa |
| 2.5–3.2 mm | 245–255 °C | 60–70 °C | 1.0–1.2 mm | 40–50 MPa |
| 3.5–4.0 mm | 240–250 °C | 50–60 °C | 1.2–1.5 mm | 35–45 MPa |
For outdoor electrical enclosures and HVAC external panels, Luran® S 776S is used at 100 wt% as the base matrix with a UV-stabilised colour masterbatch at 2 wt% to 3 wt%, and external post-industrial regrind is limited to ≤20 wt% after each 10 wt% increment is validated by ISO 1133-1:2022 and ISO 179-1:2010. Compliance is verified according to UL 94 HB through IEC 60695-11-10, enclosure ingress protection according to IEC 60529 IP5X/IPX4, and outdoor weathering according to ISO 4892-2:2013; the finished moulding must also meet RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 SVHC restrictions. Moulding is performed on hydraulic or hybrid injection presses sized by cavity pressure transducers, with wall thickness 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm, melt temperature 240 °C to 260 °C, mould temperature 50 °C to 70 °C, and pressure-limited filling not exceeding 160 bar hydraulic. Weld lines around knockouts and cable entries are the dominant production bottleneck; their tensile strength is measured by ISO 527-2:2012 on weld-line tensile specimens and must be reported for each gate relocation. Terminal finished product types include outdoor telecommunication base station housings, HVAC condensing unit side panels, antenna radome shells, and outdoor camera housing bodies.
When Luran® S 776S is selected as a capstock for PVC-U or ABS building profiles, the capstock layer is specified at 100 wt% ASA with a processing aid at 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt%, and the layer thickness is held at 0.15 mm to 0.25 mm, representing 5% to 15% of the total wall. A layer thickness below 0.12 mm causes interfacial instability and surface wave defects that cannot be corrected by die temperature alone. The capstock extruder uses a screw with L/D 25:1 and a gear pump with output variation ±1%; the substrate extruder is typically L/D 30:1 for PVC-U. Melt temperature in the ASA capstock is controlled at 230 °C to 250 °C while PVC-U is processed at 180 °C to 200 °C; this temperature offset requires thermal isolation in the feedblock and a narrow transition channel to prevent thermal degradation of the PVC substrate. Validation of the coextruded product is anchored to EN 12608:2016 for PVC-U window profiles where applicable, ISO 4892-2:2013 for weathering, ISO 179-1:2010 for impact, ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus, and ISO 2409 cross-cut adhesion with classification 0 or 1 on the capstock-substrate interface. Reaction-to-fire classification is conducted on the final building product under EN 13501-1:2018 because the capstock alone does not determine the Euroclass. Terminal finished product types include window lineals, soffit and fascia panels, siding, fencing profiles, and cap layers for roof edge trim. The main limitation is that a high-flow ASA grade such as 776S requires a lower screw speed and a pressure-compensated melt pump in thin capstock layers; otherwise flow surging produces thickness variation exceeding ±0.03 mm.
| Test | Standard | Condition | Typical control point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xenon weathering | ISO 4892-2:2013 | cycle 1, 2000 h | grey scale ≥ 4 |
| Capstock adhesion | ISO 2409 | cross-cut | class 0–1 |
| Charpy impact | ISO 179-1:2010 | 23 °C | report kJ/m² |
| Flexural modulus | ISO 178:2019 | 2 mm/min | report MPa |
When components are moulded for bathroom water-contact environments, the material is processed at 100 wt% Luran® S 776S with a colour masterbatch at 1 wt% to 3 wt%, and external lubricants are restricted to ≤0.5 wt% because higher concentrations create plate-out on polished cavities. Compliance for the moulded component is verified by ISO 527-2:2012, ISO 179-1:2010, ISO 175:2010 immersion testing in surfactant and dilute acid/alkali solutions, and IEC 62321 screening under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Injection moulding uses polished cavities with SPI A2 finish, mould temperature 70 °C to 80 °C, and melt temperature 240 °C to 250 °C; the polished surface is essential because chemical resistance testing after moulding exposes flow lines that are invisible before immersion. Terminal finished product types include toilet seat covers, bidet cover shells, soap dispenser bodies, faucet handle bodies, and shower head cover rings. A specific boundary condition is that this grade is not tested or certified for continuous potable-water pressure service; components in direct potable-water contact require a separate material approval under NSF/ANSI 61 or equivalent national scheme, and published data for Luran® S 776S under that standard are limited.
Outdoor furniture and garden equipment housings are produced from Luran® S 776S at 100 wt% neat resin with a UV-stabilised masterbatch at 2 wt% to 3 wt%; post-industrial regrind is limited to 20 wt% because higher levels reduce notched impact and widen colour variation. The structural durability of finished outdoor furniture is validated by EN 581-2:2015 static and fatigue load schedules, while colour retention is tested by ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 and assessed by ISO 105-A02 grey scale. Large-area shells are injection moulded with wall thickness 2.5 mm to 5.0 mm, melt temperature 240 °C to 260 °C, mould temperature 50 °C to 70 °C, and sequential valve gating to shift weld lines away from high-stress armrest and leg interfaces. Sink marks above mounting bosses are controlled by holding pressure 40 MPa to 55 MPa and conical boss geometry; gate location is optimised with mould-filling simulation before steel cutting. Terminal finished product types include lounge chair shells, table tops, garden power tool housings, pool skimmer bodies, and outdoor storage box side panels. Published data for glass-fibre-reinforced Luran® S 776S configurations is limited; if higher modulus is required, a separate glass-filled ASA grade or a validated glass masterbatch let-down is evaluated against ISO 527-2:2012 and ISO 179-1:2010, and the neat-resin values of 776S must not be extrapolated.
When painted ABS is replaced in high-moisture appliance fascia, Luran® S 776S is moulded at 100 wt% with a pigment masterbatch at 2 wt% and no external liquid colour, because liquid colour can interfere with surface gloss and detergent resistance. The relevant appliance safety standard is IEC 60335-1:2020; flame performance is classified as UL 94 HB through IEC 60695-11-10, and restricted substances are controlled under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Chemical resistance to laundry detergent and bleach-containing cleaners is screened by ISO 175:2010 immersion at 60 °C for 72 h; the moulded fascia is then re-checked for tensile strength by ISO 527-2:2012. The injection moulding process uses wall thickness 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm, melt temperature 240 °C to 250 °C, mould temperature 60 °C to 80 °C, and graining according to VDI 3400 texture 24 to 27. Drying before moulding is mandatory at 80 °C for 4 h to 6 h; residual moisture above 0.05 wt% produces splay on textured surfaces. ABS regrind is limited to ≤20 wt% and must be excluded from high-gloss unpainted control panels if colour drift exceeds ΔE 1.5 measured by ISO 11664-4. Terminal finished product types include washing machine top panels, dryer control housings, water heater shrouds, and dishwasher front fascia. The operational boundary is that ASA does not replicate the chemical resistance of specially coated ABS to strong acidic limescale removers; immersion testing with the actual cleaner formulation is required before part approval.
