Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA 757R

Automotive exterior mirror housings and A-pillar finishers moulded from Luran S 757R are processed on medium-tonnage hydraulic injection machines with screw diameters between 35 mm and 50 mm. The grade’s melt volume-flow rate, measured to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg, is published at approximately 30 cm³/10 min, enabling reasonable filling of visible Class A surfaces at nominal wall thicknesses of 2.0 mm or less without imposing excessive cavity pressure. Melt temperature is held at 240–260 °C, while tool temperature is maintained at 50–70 °C for polished surfaces and 60–80 °C for textured grain areas. A hold pressure profile of 55–75 MPa applied for 0.8–1.5 s per mm of nominal wall thickness reduces sink marks over rib bosses and screw bosses. Drying in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4 h to a residual moisture content at or below 0.05% is mandatory; if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying time is extended to 6 h. Tooling details include pin gates with diameters from 1.0–1.5 mm, vent depths of 0.02–0.03 mm positioned at flow-front convergence points, and a non-return valve clearance kept between 0.05 mm and 0.10 mm to avoid throughput variation. Colouration uses 1.0–2.0 wt% black or body-colour masterbatch with a styrenic carrier; non-styrenic carriers can generate local delamination and should be rejected. Finished components are assessed by accelerated weathering according to ISO 4892-2 cycle 2, commonly with irradiance at 0.35 W/m² at 340 nm for 3000 h; gloss retention thresholds are typically defined by individual OEM programmes rather than by a single ISO criterion. Mirror caps, actuator covers, and A-pillar finishers produced from this grade are not typically joined by solvent welding because of the risk of local stress crazing; mechanical snap fits, screws with undersized boss holes, or vibration welding are preferred.

What Limits Weld-Line Integrity in Rear Lamp Bezel Moulding?

Weld-line integrity at the lamp aperture edge remains the limiting factor when rear lamp bezels are produced with polished, black-out appearance. In two-plate tools without sequential valve gating, pressure drop along flow lengths of 350–500 mm at wall thicknesses of 2.0–2.5 mm produces anisotropic mould shrinkage. Shrinkage values measured to ISO 294-4 in the flow direction are commonly reported in the range of 0.4–0.6%, while cross-flow shrinkage may reach 0.7–0.9% depending on packing intensity and gate location. Gate freeze time is controlled by gate diameter; with a 1.5 mm pin gate, hold pressure time should not be less than 4 s plus 1 s per mm of gate diameter. Mould temperature differentials greater than 15 °C between the moving and fixed halves produce bowing that exceeds 0.15 mm over a 400 mm length, which is outside the assembly tolerance for lamp-to-bezel gaps. Hot runner drops are maintained at 230–250 °C to avoid thermal discoloration of the black-out zone, while screw rotation speed is set at 40–80 rpm with back pressure from 3–6 MPa to homogenise 1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch without generating excessive shear heat. Terminal assemblies include the bezel, an integrally moulded black-out frame, and snap hooks; snap hook depth of 1.8 mm with undercut of 0.6 mm is permissible at room temperature because the ASA matrix retains sufficient ductility. Bake cycle validation at 80 °C for 2 h is used to detect dimensional movement before vehicle installation, and parts showing more than 0.05% post-bake shrinkage are rejected.

Outdoor telecommunication enclosures require a polymer shell that withstands thermal cycling between -40 °C and +85 °C without losing gasket sealing load. Luran S 757R provides published notched Charpy impact values to ISO 179-1/1eA of approximately 15 kJ/m² at 23 °C and approximately 5 kJ/m² at -30 °C, which places operational boundaries on snap-fit assembly in arctic climates. Moulding is performed with wall thicknesses of 3.0–4.0 mm, and rib thickness is limited to 60% of the adjacent nominal wall to prevent sink. The tool is held at 60–80 °C to reduce internal stress, and the cavity is filled through a tunnel gate or valve-gated hot runner with shear rate kept below 30,000 s⁻¹; above this shear rate, surface splay may develop on textured areas. A loading of 0.8–1.2 wt% carbon black masterbatch is used for outdoor UV resistance. The ASA backbone contains acrylate rubber rather than unsaturated butadiene rubber, which reduces chalking relative to standard ABS under outdoor exposure, but the specific UL 746C f1 outdoor-suitability rating for Luran S 757R must be verified against the current UL Yellow Card before IEC 62208 enclosure qualification can be claimed. Metal inserts are pre-heated to 80–100 °C before overmoulding to prevent early freeze and circumferential cracking. Final enclosure mechanical verification includes impact testing according to IEC 62262 IK08; a 3.5 mm wall alone is not sufficient without corner radii of at least 1.5 mm and properly located stiffening ribs. Dielectric performance in radio-transparent housing designs is not controlled by the base resin alone; conductive seals, cable glands, and internal shielding dominate overall attenuation behaviour, and published data for complete multi-layer enclosure assemblies using this specific grade is limited.

When Clamp Force Calculations Are Reviewed for Large Garden Shrouds

In high-volume production of ride-on mower side shrouds and snowthrower discharge chutes, moulders calculate clamp force from projected area and an assumed cavity pressure of 30–40 MPa for thin-wall ASA. Because Luran S 757R exhibits high-flow behaviour, end-of-fill cavity pressure in parts with 2.5 mm wall thickness and 600 mm flow length is typically found between 25–35 MPa. A 1000 t press may therefore be replaced by an 800 t press if the hydraulic clamping system is load-compensated and the mould base is supported by full-perimeter back plates. Drying remains non-negotiable: residual moisture above 0.06% produces surface roughness and reduces low-temperature impact in the finished shroud. A central drying system with a dew point of -30 °C and hopper capacity of 150 kg is set to 80 °C for 4 h. The high-flow grade permits filling through a single submarine gate of 2.0 mm diameter on the non-visible underside; for heavily textured parts, sequential valve gating with two drops reduces weld lines at the steering column opening. Cycle time is controlled by cooling of thick boss areas; conformal cooling is unnecessary if ejector pin cooling is added on bosses of 8 mm diameter and 20 mm depth. Final part tests include falling dart impact at -20 °C to ISO 6603-2 and UV retention to ISO 4892-2 for 2000 h. Pigment selection affects fade resistance: phthalocyanine blue and green concentrates show less gloss shift than azo-based organic pigments at identical loading levels of 2.0 wt%. An additional 0.3 wt% antistatic masterbatch is introduced when static dust attraction must be reduced during warehouse storage and retail display.

For washing machine control panel frames and air-conditioner louver housings, melt temperature is lowered to 230–245 °C to reduce odour and splay on light-coloured components. Drying at 80 °C for 3 h is accepted when ambient relative humidity is below 40%. The resin is processed through a 2.0 mm pin gate with tool temperature from 40–60 °C; textured surfaces at a depth of 30 µm replicate with negligible gloss variation after 100,000 moulding cycles if the tool is hardened to HRC 52–54. Screw cushion is maintained at 2–4 mm; a larger cushion increases residence time and causes visible colour shift in white grades loaded with 1.0 wt% TiO₂. Cleaning before vacuum metallisation should avoid aromatic or chlorinated solvents because these agents can cause stress cracking in ASA mouldings; plasma pre-treatment is preferred for removal of silicone-containing mould release residues.

EN 71-3 Migration Testing, Not Merely Resin Certification, Governs Toy Housings

Migration compliance for toy ride-on bodies and building-block storage cases moulded from Luran S 757R is not achieved by resin certification alone. The finished article must be tested according to EN 71-3:2019+A2:2022 for migration of 19 elements. Barium, cadmium, lead, and chromium are characterised against category-specific migration limits, and the moulding process must not introduce those metals from hot runner corrosion, barrel wear, or inorganic pigments. Melt temperature is held at or below 240 °C to minimise generation of volatile styrene oligomers, while mould-opening air extraction is arranged to capture residual vapours. The high-flow grade permits filling of toy panels at 1.5 mm wall thickness on low-tonnage machines, but regrind content above 20 wt% can elevate low-molecular-weight emissions; headspace analysis of the finished article is therefore required for sensitive applications. Ultrasonically welded battery compartments use an energy director height of 0.5 mm and shear interference of 0.2 mm; horn amplitude of 20–30 µm at 20 kHz melts the joint in less than 0.8 s without excessive surface marking. Pigment loading is maintained at 0.8–1.5 wt% masterbatch; fluorescent pigments may require elevated processing temperatures and can reduce notched impact performance, so finished-part impact testing to ISO 179-1/1eA should be repeated after colour approval. Published data for Luran S 757R under EN 71-9 organic chemical limits is limited for certain colour formulations, and qualification campaigns must therefore include formulation-specific migration and emission testing rather than relying solely on base-resin datasheets.
