Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA 757G UV

Luran S 757G UV is generally converted into unpainted grained black lower body trim, exterior mirror housings, door handle escutcheons, tailgate latch covers, cowl vent grilles, and B-pillar trim on hydraulic or hybrid injection moulding machines from 120 t to 250 t clamp force. Pre-drying in a desiccant-bed dryer at 80 °C for 4 h to a residual moisture level below 0.05% is the standard preparation step; the dryer dew point is held at −20 °C or lower, and hopper residence time is kept short in humid production halls above 60% relative humidity to avoid re-absorption. Melt temperature at the nozzle is controlled within 240 °C to 270 °C, while the mould temperature is normally 50 °C to 70 °C; hot-runner drops with valve-gated or hot-tip gates are used for mirror housings to reduce gate vestige, and tunnel gates are avoided when the grained surface is customer-visible. The material is often run neat; when black colour is required, 1.5–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch with an ASA carrier is added, and body-colour parts use 2.0–3.0 wt% heavy-metal-free pigment concentrate. Regrind from sprues and short-shot parts is re-introduced at not more than 20 wt% of the total shot mass, and only regrind generated from the same lot family is reused. Weathering validation for this segment is anchored to ISO 1043-1 for marking as ASA, ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 or SAE J2527 filtered xenon-arc exposure, and ISO 179-1/1eA notched impact testing at 23 °C and −30 °C; OEM programmes commonly define colour change Delta E and retained gloss thresholds after 1 500 h to 2 000 h of exposure in Atlas Xenotest or Ci4000 instruments with a 0.55 W/m² irradiance at 340 nm. A common production bottleneck on grained components is splay caused by moisture pockets in shuttle loads of regrind; this is controlled by granulate dedusting and by limiting screw decompression to 2–3 mm after recovery. Terminal products produced under this process route include mirror base plates, parking sensor bezels, tailgate latch covers, and grain-matched pillar trims that are sent to OEM lines without post-mould coating.

What Regrind Fraction Is Safe When Luran S 757G UV Moves into Outdoor Telecom and EV Charger Enclosures?

Outdoor telecom cabinets, small-cell radio shrouds, AC and DC electric-vehicle charging pillars, and surge protection device housings are increasingly specified in Luran S 757G UV because the 25 cm³/10 min melt volume-flow rate measured at 220 °C and 10 kg per ISO 1133-1 permits long flow paths in ribbed enclosure shells without excessive injection pressure. The main process conflict in this segment is regrind fraction: unreinforced ASA loses some melt stability after repeated plastication, and flash or mould filling variations become visible when recycled content exceeds 25 wt% on 180 t to 350 t machines with clamp force at the lower end of the tooling requirement. Parts are typically dried at 80 °C for 4 h to 0.05% residual moisture and moulded at melt temperatures of 235 °C to 260 °C; mould temperatures between 50 °C and 80 °C are used to balance boss filling and flatness. Gating uses full-round or trapezoidal cold runners with cold slug wells, or thermally balanced hot-runner manifolds when multi-cavity tools produce front frames, rear shells, and screw bosses in one shot. Colour formulation uses RAL 7035 or RAL 7016 masterbatch between 2.0 wt% and 3.5 wt% on an ASA carrier; EVA or polyethylene carriers are excluded because they can reduce weld-line strength and leave surface streaks along flow lines. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 60068-2-5 test Sa for solar radiation exposure, ISO 4892-2 xenon weathering for 2 000 h in exposed installations, and EN 62208 for empty enclosure mechanical performance; part-level outdoor suitability under UL 746C F1 is not automatically transferred from the raw material, so enclosure suppliers verify the complete device. The material is not suitable for continuous service above 85 °C near live conductors and does not provide UL 94 V-0 flammability; if flame retardancy is required, an alternative grade or a barrier design must be specified. Terminal products include 5G small-cell housings, EV charging connector bezels, antenna radome bases, and outdoor surge protection enclosures.

Across walk-behind mower decks, lawn tractor hoods, snow thrower shrouds, grass catcher chutes, and irrigation control boxes, Luran S 757G UV is processed on 400 t to 600 t large-pattern injection moulding machines with sequential valve gating to reduce knit lines and fill long grained surfaces. The grade is dried for 4–6 h at 80 °C when the production environment exceeds 60% relative humidity, and the residual moisture is checked below 0.05% before the first shot of each shift. Melt temperature is held between 240 °C and 260 °C, mould temperature between 50 °C and 70 °C, and screw backpressure is kept at 5–15 bar with screw surface speed limited to 40–70 rpm to avoid shear overheat at high flow. Black turf parts are compounded at the press with 2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch in an ASA carrier; orange, green, or grey parts use 3.0–4.0 wt% inorganic or heavy-metal-free organic pigment concentrate, and regrind from sprues and rejected parts is limited to 20 wt% because higher levels reduce low-temperature impact and increase colour drift in the field. The process boundary on hot parts is demoulding: the low modulus at ejection means small-diameter ejector pins can punch through ribs or leave stress whitening, so pins are sized with larger heads and extraction is delayed below 80 °C surface temperature. Nozzle drool is another observed bottleneck; decompression settings above 3 mm pull air into the hot runner and create brown streaks, so decompression is held at 2–3 mm and shut-off nozzles are used on accumulators. Compliance testing covers ISO 179-1/1eA notched impact at −30 °C for snow-blower applications, ISO 175 immersion in ASTM reference fuel C and diesel for 24 h at 23 °C where fuel spillage is possible, and ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc exposure for colour and gloss retention on mower hoods after 1 500 h. Terminal products include lawn tractor hoods, fan shrouds, fertiliser hopper lids, and grass catcher chutes that operate in direct sunlight without painting.

When Unpainted High-Gloss Housings Must Replace Painted ABS in Outdoor Climate-Control Units

Outdoor air-conditioner condenser covers, heat-pump top plates, portable spot-cooler housings, and dehumidifier shells that require a painted appearance without volatile organic emissions can be converted to Luran S 757G UV if the moulding cell is designed for rapid heat/cool thermal cycling. The limiting factor in this segment is surface replication: high-gloss black or near-white parts show every gate blush, weld line, and sink mark, so the mould temperature must be raised above the material’s heat-deflection range before filling and cooled rapidly before demoulding. A typical window is 230 °C to 250 °C melt temperature, 70 °C to 90 °C dynamic mould temperature, and a cooling water supply below 20 °C for cycle control; across a 600 mm flow length, the cavity surface variation is kept within ±5 °C to avoid asymmetric gloss bands. The grade is dried at 80 °C for 4 h to below 0.05% residual moisture; no mould release is applied to the cavity, and regrind is limited to 15 wt% because multiple heat histories reduce surface gloss and yellow-index stability. Colour adjustment is made with 1.0–2.0 wt% high-opacity masterbatch in ASA carrier; mineral or metallic effect pigments are excluded where weld-line strength is already under stress from UV exposure. Compliance for this application segment is anchored to IEC 60335-1 and IEC 60335-2-40 for appliance enclosures, ISO 4892-2 or IEC 60068-2-5 for outdoor weathering, and UL 94 HB for polymer flammability classification of the enclosure material. The product is not specified for continuous contact with hot compressor oil or refrigerants because aromatic solvents and ester-based lubricants can plasticise or stress-crack the ASA matrix; components near service valves use closed-cell gaskets and are not used as primary pressure boundaries. Terminal products include outdoor unit top covers, front panels, service valve covers, and side grille frames that replace painted ABS at the same wall thickness and tooling envelope.

Thin-Wall Building and Photovoltaic Mounting Components Require a Different Drying and Moulding Window

Solar module clamps, cable management clips, roof-load transfer bases, and exterior water-management brackets in Luran S 757G UV are processed with a higher melt temperature and faster injection speed than standard housings because the wall thickness is often 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm and the flow path may exceed 200 mm. The material is dried at 80 °C for 4 h; because these parts have a high ratio of surface area to shot mass, the hopper is kept sealed and residence time is limited to avoid moisture uptake above 0.05%. Melt temperature is raised to 245 °C to 275 °C with mould temperature 60 °C to 90 °C; switch-over from injection to holding is triggered by cavity pressure at 40–60 bar rather than by screw position alone, and packing pressure is held for 5–8 s to prevent V-notch sink. Formulation uses neat Luran S 757G UV with 2.0 wt% black or dark grey masterbatch and up to 25 wt% clean regrind; no impact modifier or glass fibre is added because the grade already balances stiffness and notched impact without altering the coefficient of linear thermal expansion. The dimensional analysis uses the 0.09 mm/m·K coefficient of linear thermal expansion typical of ASA; a 1 m long mounting rail exposed to a 10 K service temperature change can therefore expand 0.9 mm at the end fixings, so slotted holes are used rather than round-hole lock points. Compliance references ISO 527-2 tensile testing, ISO 178 flexural testing, ISO 306 Vicat softening, and ISO 4892-2 exposure for 2 000 h in high-solar-load installations; load-bearing parts are additionally tested to EN 1991-1-4 wind load calculations at the system level. The material is not recommended for structural rail sections above 80 °C continuous service or where fire class B or higher is required under building codes. Terminal products include PV cable clips, inverter cover brackets, inverter mounting feet, and roof penetration flashing clips.

Outdoor Lighting Bezels and Sensor Housings: Low-Stress Gate Designs and UV-Hals Concentrates

Opaque streetlight bezels, motion-sensor housings, landscape light collars, and photocell enclosures are moulded from Luran S 757G UV in multi-cavity tools using low-stress edge gates or valve gates to preserve impact strength around screw bosses and snap-fit hooks. The material is dried at 80 °C for 4 h, melted at 235 °C to 250 °C, and filled into cavities held at 60 °C to 80 °C; injection velocities are reduced near the end of fill by 20% to 30% to avoid jetting and gate blush on textured front surfaces. Black and charcoal parts use 1.5–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch in ASA carrier; white and high-reflectance parts use 2.5–3.5 wt% titanium dioxide-based concentrate, and only 15 wt% regrind is allowed when photometric or sensor calibration labels must remain legible after 1 000 h of artificial weathering. The UV package is already present in the grade, but processors adding halogen-heavy flame retardants or aromatic amine-based additives are advised against such combinations because these can shift the UV absorber performance and cause exudation on dark parts. Compliance is checked under ISO 4892-2 filtered xenon-arc exposure, UL 94 HB for the polymer, and IEC 60598-1 as the system-level luminaire standard; the material itself is not a light-transmitting grade and is not specified for transparent or translucent lens covers. Terminal products include streetlight arm covers, LED driver box lids, motion sensor bases, and landscape light mounting collars that are installed without additional paint or clearcoat.
