Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA 757G

Injection moulding of exterior mirror housings from Luran® S ASA 757G is performed on hydraulic and all-electric machines with clamp force ranges from 1,800 kN to 3,500 kN, depending on projected area and cavity count. Residual moisture before processing is controlled to below 0.03 wt% by desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h; production-line failures occur when the return air dew point exceeds -25 °C, producing silver streaks at valve-gate drops. Cylinder temperatures are profiled from feed zone at 220 °C through 235 °C, 245 °C, to nozzle at 250 °C; air-shot melt temperature is held at 240–260 °C. Mould temperature set at 60–80 °C controls gloss consolidation; a shift of ±5 °C changes 60° gloss by ±1.5 GU in polished cavities. The formulation uses a 50% pigment-loaded ASA masterbatch at 3.0–5.0 wt%; addition below 2.0 wt% results in CIELAB ΔE greater than 1.0 in thin rib sections of 1.2 mm wall thickness when assessed per DIN 6174. Knit-line impact retention downstream of pin gates is 60–70% of the unwelded value measured by ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 at -30 °C; single-gate tools are preferred for high-stress mirror housing ribs. Compliance submission for OEM approval includes ISO 4892-2:2013, Method A, Cycle 1 xenon arc weathering for 2,000 h; ISO 1133-1:2022 MVR control; and IATF 16949:2016 production part approval process. Terminal products include mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, B-pillar covers, windshield side trim, and sensor mounting brackets.

What Limits Capstock Layer Stability in PVC Window Lineals?

Coextruded window lineals using Luran® S ASA 757G capstock over rigid PVC are limited by interfacial adhesion and die swell mismatch at the feedblock. The capstock stream is metered at a finished thickness of 0.5–1.0 mm, corresponding to 10–15% of the total wall thickness; below 0.4 mm, xenon arc weathering per ISO 4892-2:2013 Method A produces chalking and ΔE greater than 5.0 after 1,500 h. The capstock extruder uses a 32:1 L/D single-screw machine with a melt temperature of 220–245 °C; the PVC substrate is processed on a separate 25:1 L/D twin-screw extruder at 190 °C. Die swell of the ASA melt is 1.8–2.2%, compared with 1.0–1.4% for the rigid PVC formulation; feedblock land lengths are shortened by 2–3 mm to compensate edge encapsulation failure. Addition ratio of ASA 757G in the finished profile is 12.5 wt% for a 0.8 mm cap on a 5.6 mm substrate; colour concentrate at 2.5–3.5 wt% in the capstock stream achieves RAL 7016 anthracite. Processing limits: at melt temperature above 250 °C, surface melt fracture occurs; below 225 °C, interfacial adhesion to the PVC core is insufficient, leading to delamination at V-groove welded corners heated to 230 °C. Compliance follows EN 12608-1:2016, RAL-GZ 716/1, and EN 20105-A02 grey scale minimum rating 4 after 5,000 h Florida exposure. End products include window main profiles, door frame inserts, sash profiles, and fascia boards.

Agricultural Machinery Hoods and the Role of Weatherable ASA 757G in Extrusion Blow Moulding

Extrusion blow moulding of tractor hood side panels from Luran® S ASA 757G is less documented in published datasets than injection moulding, but production records from agricultural equipment manufacturers confirm cycle-time stability of ±1.5 s when parison programming is maintained. The formulation is 2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch and 0.3 wt% external lubricant; no impact modifier is required for wall thickness above 3.0 mm. Parison melt temperature is set at 235–245 °C; die gap profiling adjusts wall thickness from 4.0 mm at pinch-off to 2.2 mm across large radius areas. Blow-up ratio is maintained at 2.8–3.2, and mould temperature at 40 °C controls surface grain replication. A processing conflict arises at parison sag exceeding 12 mm over a 150 mm hang length when melt temperature drifts above 250 °C; wall thickness distribution then exceeds ±0.3 mm and creates thin spots below 2.0 mm, which fail puncture testing under ISO 6603-2:2020. Compliance includes ISO 14982:1998 electromagnetic compatibility for agricultural machinery, ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon arc weathering for 2,000 h, and REACH Article 33 communication requirements. Terminal components include tractor hood side panels, fender extensions, control panel covers, and air intake shields. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the above parameters represent consolidation of production-scale observations rather than resin supplier certified values.

For outdoor power equipment shrouds produced on vertical clamp injection moulding machines, Luran® S ASA 757G is processed without impact modifier at rigid part wall thicknesses from 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm. Below 2.5 mm, Charpy notched impact strength per ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 at -30 °C falls below the OEM acceptance threshold of 8 kJ/m², a limitation that excludes unmodified ASA 757G from gear case housings. The material is blended with a UV/antioxidant masterbatch at 1.5–2.5 wt%; raising the addition above 3.0 wt% reduces melt volume rate measured by ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg by 2–4 cm³/10 min, leading to short shots in thin ribs of 1.0 mm nominal wall. Screw back pressure is set at 3–5 bar, melt temperature at 240–260 °C, mould temperature at 60–70 °C; a three-stage injection velocity profile of 12–25 mm/s is used to displace air through 0.03 mm vent channels. Multi-cavity tools with 8–16 cavities produce batch-to-batch weight variation below 0.35%. Compliance for outdoor power equipment enclosures includes ISO 4892-3:2016 UV-A fluorescent weathering for 1,000 h with ΔE under 3.0, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by 2022/2380, and UL 94 HB thickness-dependent flammability classification. End products include engine shrouds, grass deflector flaps, wheel covers, and fuel tank shrouds.

When ASA 757G Replaces Painted ABS in Recreational Vehicle Exterior Trim

Replacement of painted ABS side skirt panels with moulded-in-colour Luran® S ASA 757G becomes process-critical when the component must retain gloss and colour stability without a clear coat. The formulation addition ratio is 2.0–4.0 wt% of a matched ASA-based colour masterbatch and 0.1–0.3 wt% of a high-molecular-weight silicone processing aid to eliminate die lines on textured surfaces. The downstream process is large-part injection moulding with sequential valve gating and hot runner; melt temperature is held at 245–255 °C, mould temperature at 50–70 °C, and holding pressure at 40–60 MPa for 2.5 s/mm of nominal wall. Flow length to wall thickness ratio of 180:1 is achievable; beyond 200:1, knit-line strength retention falls below 60% of the unwelded value per ISO 527-2:2012. A critical threshold occurs in sonic welding of mounting bosses: weld strength degrades by 15–20% when residual moisture content exceeds 0.05 wt%, requiring pre-drying at 80 °C for 3 h before assembly. Compliance includes ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon arc exposure for 2,000 h, SAE J2527 filter system, and ISO 6603-2:2020 puncture impact. End products include RV side skirts, wheel arch flares, luggage compartment doors, and exterior access panels. Published data for this specific configuration is limited for long-term Florida exposure beyond 5 years, but supplier-approved colour concentrates are qualified against automotive exterior weathering protocols equivalent to PV 3929 and PV 3930.

Thermoformed Spa Shells and Chlorinated Water Contact Define a Processing Boundary

Thermoforming of Luran® S ASA 757G sheet for spa shells and step assemblies is governed by sheet moisture content and sag resistance. Extruded sheet of 4.0–6.0 mm thickness is produced on a single-screw extruder with 33:1 L/D and a coat-hanger die; surface embossing is replicated at 0.8–1.2 μm Ra. Before forming, sheet is pre-dried at 80 °C for 4 h to moisture below 0.02 wt%; higher residual moisture causes micro-blisters when sheet surface temperature reaches 170–180 °C. The addition ratio of a chlorinated water exposure stabilizer masterbatch is 1.5 wt% in formulations intended for continuous immersion at 1–3 ppm free chlorine; published data for specific chlorine resistance of ASA 757G is limited, and field performance is validation-dependent. Forming uses radiant ceramic heaters with a bottom/top heat ratio of 55/45, sheet surface temperature of 165–175 °C, and forming vacuum of -0.85 bar; corner wall thickness is maintained above 2.5 mm. A process conflict occurs at sheet sag exceeding 15 mm over a 300 mm span, causing non-uniform draw and whitening at the clamp frame edge. Compliance for these components includes ISO 4892-2:2013 weathering, IEC 62321 RoHS screening, and EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 migration of certain elements where toy-like access is considered. End products include spa shells, step fenders, filter housings, and pump covers.

Architectural fascia letters are vacuum-formed from 2.0 mm extruded ASA 757G sheet with 1.0 wt% UV masterbatch addition, processed at sheet surface temperature 160–170 °C, and supplied under EN 13501-1:2018 Reaction to Fire Class E assessment as backlit letter faces.
