Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA 747R

    Application-Specific Processing of INEOS Styrolution Luran® S ASA 747R

Luran® S ASA 747R is a high-flow acrylonitrile–styrene–acrylate terpolymer specified for injection moulding of weather-exposed exterior components. The grade is not self-classified as flame-retardant, is not intended for continuous immersion in aggressive organic solvents, and does not carry an automatic food-contact or potable-water listing; regulatory assessments are completed on the finished article. Melt volume flow is determined under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C and 10 kg, with the grade-specific value taken from the current INEOS Styrolution datasheet. Regulatory status under REACH and RoHS is product-specific and declared through the supplier safety data sheet; finished-article compliance is determined on the final assembly. The downstream channels described below are restricted to documented industrial segments in which the grade is used as the base polymer matrix. Where grade-specific published data is unavailable for a particular configuration, that limitation is stated rather than replaced with an unverified figure. All processing values refer to moulding of neat Luran S 747R unless a formulation addition is explicitly stated.

Exterior mirror housings and A-pillar covers processed at 250–270°C melt temperature

In exterior mirror housing manufacture, Luran S 747R is metered from a dehumidifying hopper into a general-purpose reciprocating screw injection-moulding machine with a screw diameter of 35–55 mm, an L/D ratio of 20:1–24:1, a compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1, and a non-return valve at the screw tip. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 4 h is required to lower residual moisture to ≤0.05 wt%; when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, the drying dwell is extended to 6 h because the acrylate phase reabsorbs atmospheric moisture during hopper loading and machine throat standby. The melt temperature is maintained at 250–270°C, with the rear barrel zone set 10–15°C lower to prevent feed-throat bridging. A melt cushion of 3–5 mm and hydraulic back pressure of 60–120 bar stabilise screw recovery, while mould temperature is held at 60–80°C, the upper limit being applied to grained tool surfaces on which flow lines would otherwise appear after painting.

Conformity for painted and unpainted exterior mirror housings is commonly assessed under ISO 527-1/-2 for tensile properties, ISO 179-1/1eA for Charpy notched impact at 23°C and −30°C, and ISO 75-2 HDT A at 1.8 MPa. Accelerated weathering is performed to SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2:2013 method A cycle 1, with subsequent paint adhesion evaluated by cross-cut testing to ISO 2409; carbon black pigmented parts are commonly monitored for gloss retention over 2,000 h xenon arc exposure. Because Luran S 747R is not a flame-retardant grade, interior-facing burn-rate requirements applied by OEMs must be validated on the finished wall thickness, not assumed from raw polymer classification.

The formulation for unpainted black mirror housings is 100 parts by weight Luran S 747R with 2.0–4.0 wt% UV-stabilised carbon black masterbatch; body-colour and metallised housings use 2.0–3.0 wt% pigment concentrate, with no separate liquid stabiliser package because the acrylate rubber phase provides exterior colour stability. Regrind from sprues and runner systems is re-introduced at ≤15 wt% where gloss consistency is critical; above 20 wt%, production-scale reports describe orange peel and reduced weld-line strength on large A-pillar covers. Terminal product types in this channel include exterior mirror housings, A-pillar exterior covers, cowl vent grille frames, and tailgate side trims.

Outdoor electrical distribution boards and wall-mounted switch enclosures are injection moulded from Luran S 747R where the technical specification prioritises UV resistance, dimensional stability between −20°C and +60°C, and lower water absorption as measured by ISO 62 at ≤0.5% saturation, rather than flame-retardant classification. The qualifying framework is IEC 62208 for empty low-voltage switchgear and controlgear enclosures, with mechanical impact tested at the declared minimum service temperature rather than only at 23°C. Ingress protection is established at assembled enclosure level under IEC 60529, commonly IP44 or IP55, because the housing polymer contributes dimensional stability but does not alone create the IP rating. Flammability is tested on the finished article under IEC 60695-2-11; unfilled ASA 747R generally falls outside the higher glow-wire ignition classes, and FR ASA or PC/ASA is substituted where 750°C or 850°C glow-wire compliance is mandatory. Where the end-use standard accepts horizontal burning, flammability is tested to IEC 60695-11-10; a UL 94 HB classification may be declared at the finished wall thickness, but no vertical FR classification is implied.

In these enclosures the formulation is 100 wt% Luran S 747R with 2.0–3.5 wt% light-stable inorganic pigment masterbatch; carbon black is limited to 1.0–1.5 wt% in black meter box covers because thicker heat accumulation under direct solar load can increase surface temperature. Moulding is performed at a melt temperature of 250–265°C and a mould temperature of 60–70°C, with wall sections of 2.0–3.5 mm and rib-to-wall ratio not exceeding 0.6:1 to limit sink marks around bosses. Production-scale experience on hydraulic and electric injection-moulding machines in the 1,800–3,500 kN clamp force range identifies post-demoulding warpage as the main failure mode; cavity pressure sensors and post-mould fixturing for 30–60 s reduce warpage on long rectangular covers. Parts produced in this segment include outdoor meter boxes, weatherproof junction boxes, external socket guard enclosures, cable distribution boxes, and IP-rated terminal compartments for solar inverters.

Can Luran S 747R sustain intermittent chlorinated pool-water contact without stress cracking?

For spa side panels, filter housings above the waterline, and pool cover track components, Luran S 747R is selected because the acrylate rubber phase reduces notched impact sensitivity relative to unmodified SAN and because post-mould painting is not required to resist chalking. Published data for continuous immersion of this specific grade in 40°C chlorinated water is limited; the safe design boundary is therefore intermittent contact and drainage surfaces, not submerged pressure housings. Chemical resistance is validated on the finished part under ISO 175 using 1–3 ppm free chlorine at 23°C and 40°C for 7 days, with dimensional change and visual cracking recorded as acceptance responses. Where the OEM requires NSF/ANSI 50 certification for circulation system components, the base polymer does not automatically carry the listing; the completed assembly must be submitted for certification.

The processing window uses a melt temperature of 250–270°C, a mould temperature of 60–80°C, and injection speed set high enough to fill long skirt ribs without jetting. Because Luran S 747R has higher flow than standard ASA grades, parting-line vents of 0.02–0.04 mm depth are machined along the flow path to prevent gas burn at rib roots; insufficient venting is a documented failure mode on large spa skirt panels, producing brown streaks at the end of fill. Screw recovery is run with 50–100 bar back pressure, and the nozzle is kept short and heated to 255–265°C to reduce stringing at the sprue bushing.

The compound formulation is 100 wt% Luran S 747R with 2.0–3.0 wt% light-stable colour masterbatch; white spa skirts typically use 2.5–3.5 wt% titanium dioxide concentrate, which raises melt viscosity and requires a 5–10°C increase in the rear melt zone compared with dark colours. Regrind is allowed at ≤20 wt% for non-load-bearing skirt panels only; filter lids with threaded bosses are moulded from virgin polymer because regrind reduces weld-line strength at the thread roots. Finished parts in this segment include above-waterline filter housings, pump strainer covers, spa side skirts, sealed swimming pool light niches, and cover track end caps.

Outdoor heat pump louvered panels, drain pans, and air curtain housings are moulded from Luran S 747R when the application combines low-temperature impact on the compressor-side face with long-term ultraviolet exposure. The product safety standard is IEC 60335-1, with heat and fire resistance evaluated under clause 30.2; because ASA 747R is not flame-retardant, live parts must be separated and internal barriers produced from an FR polymer where the standard requires. Mechanical integrity is verified after thermal ageing at 80°C for 1,000 h using ISO 527-2 tensile modulus and ISO 178 flexural modulus to detect embrittlement of the acrylate phase. Outdoor suitability may be confirmed through UL 746C evaluation on the finished part; the raw polymer datasheet alone does not establish the outdoor rating.

These large-area mouldings are produced on injection-moulding machines with clamp force of 3,500–8,000 kN using hot runner systems with sequential valve gating to control weld-line placement across louvered geometry. The low melt viscosity of Luran S 747R permits filling of 2.0–3.0 mm walls at lower injection pressure than medium-flow ASA, but the same viscosity shortens the process window for hot-runner drool; nozzle temperature is held at 240–250°C and the manifold is thermally isolated to prevent stagnation. Mould temperature of 65–80°C is used to avoid visible flow lines on textured surfaces; tool surfaces with 2–4 μm Ra roughness and 1.5° draft angles reduce demoulding stress whitening.

The formulation addition is 100 parts by weight Luran S 747R with 1.5–2.5 wt% inorganic pigment masterbatch for grey and beige heat pump panels. Additional hindered-amine light stabiliser masterbatch is not required for the base grade and is generally avoided because production reports describe increased mould plate-out, requiring cavity cleaning every 36–48 h. Where high salt-spray coastal exposure is specified, the finished part is tested under ISO 4892-2 with water spray cycles rather than relying on additive modification. Moulded articles in this channel include outdoor air-conditioner louvered front panels, heat pump drain pans, inverter housing side covers, and air curtain external shells.

When cumulative UV radiation exceeds 120 kLy in base station radome deployments

For telecom antenna radomes and small-cell enclosures, Luran S 747R is used where structural stiffness, low dielectric loss, and long-term exterior colour retention are required without paint. The relevant environmental exposure is defined by ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon arc testing at 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm and 65°C black panel temperature, with exposure cycles of 2,000–4,000 h depending on the target service life. Radar transparency is not a base-polymer property alone; the pigmentation package must avoid conductive carbon black, and organic pigment concentrates are limited to 1.5–2.5 wt% to keep signal attenuation within OEM-specific limits. No independent telecommunications standard assigns a single dielectric constant pass value to the raw polymer; finished wall thickness, rib spacing, and moulded-in stress all influence radio-frequency response.

The low melt viscosity of Luran S 747R supports moulding of radome walls as thin as 2.0 mm with flow lengths exceeding 400 mm from a single valve gate; however, high flow also increases molecular orientation, so the process requires slow to medium injection speed and a mould temperature at the upper end of 70–80°C to reduce frozen-in stress. Mould shops report that lower mould temperatures in the 40–50°C range produce visible birefringence at the gate and can shift the return loss curve of the assembled antenna. The parts are dried at 80°C for 4 h; if the hopper is not covered and ambient humidity exceeds 60%, residual moisture above 0.08 wt% generates silver streaks at the ribs and degrades the surface that carries a silicone gasket.

The base formulation is 100 wt% Luran S 747R with 1.5–2.5 wt% colour masterbatch; for white radomes, 2.0–3.0 wt% titanium dioxide pigment is employed, and the resulting density increase is included in wall-thickness calculations. Regrind is maintained below 10 wt% in radio-transparent parts because multiple heat histories increase yellowing and can alter the dielectric loss tangent at the upper 6 GHz frequency range. Assembled components in this channel include 5G small-cell radomes, outdoor base station covers, antenna housing brackets, and radio-frequency transparent enclosure fronts.

Lawn tractor hoods and generator side covers as large-area weathering applications

Luran S 747R is formed into hoods, side covers, and fan shrouds for outdoor power equipment where the component must withstand ultraviolet exposure, occasional fuel contact, and stone impact. The qualifying test matrix typically includes ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact at −30°C, ISO 527-2 tensile strength at 23°C, and ISO 175 resistance to unleaded fuel for 24 h at 23°C followed by tensile property retention. The grade is not suitable for continuous hot fuel contact above 60°C or for aromatic solvent immersion, and these exposure boundaries must be recorded in the OEM technical file. Weatherability is evaluated by ISO 4892-2 xenon arc testing with dry/water spray cycles, with colour change and gloss retention measured on unfilled test plaques before production tooling approval.

These hoods are moulded on large injection-moulding machines with clamp force of 4,000–12,000 kN, filling through two or three hot drops into a sequential valve-gated layout to avoid visible weld lines on the upper surface. The melt temperature is held at 255–270°C; at the lower end, gas traps at the hood nose are reported, while at the upper end, splay from residual moisture becomes the dominant defect. Mould temperature is maintained at 70–80°C for surface replication and to reduce post-mould shrinkage after 24 h.

For these components, the polymer fraction is 100 wt% Luran S 747R with 2.0–3.0 wt% pigment masterbatch; impact-modifier or glass-fibre packages are not added in the base grade because the high-flow balance for hood filling controls the process. Regrind from runners and rejected hoods is kept at ≤15 wt%; higher regrind fractions reduce low-temperature impact but can be tolerated if the hood is used on electric garden equipment rather than petrol engine cowlings. Production parts in this segment include lawn tractor hoods, generator side covers, string trimmer guards, and garden cultivator front shrouds.
