Application of INEOS Styrolution India ABS ABSOLAC 3000

On a 1,500 kN toggle-clamp injection moulding machine equipped with a 36 mm general-purpose screw of L/D 20:1, INEOS Styrolution India ABS ABSOLAC 3000 is pre-dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point not higher than -30 °C at 80 °C ± 5 °C for 2–4 h. Residual moisture is measured to a maximum of 0.05 wt% by ISO 15512:2019 Method B before start-up. The formulation is maintained at 98 parts by mass neat ABSOLAC 3000 and 2 parts by mass low-emission carbon black masterbatch; no mineral filler is added, preserving the unfilled butadiene-rubber phase required for cold-climate cockpit side trim. Barrel set points from feed throat to nozzle are 210/230/240/250 °C, the hot-runner manifold is held at 245 °C, and tool surface temperature is 45–60 °C. A cold edge gate with land length 1.0 mm is positioned at the thick-to-thin transition, and fill velocity is profiled from 35 mm/s to 60 mm/s to avoid free-jet entry into the grained cavity.

Grain retention limits the process window to ≤ 25 µm texture depth when the cavity is photo-etched; deeper textures demand higher melt pressure that can create sink on the reverse face of clip bosses. Hold pressure is set at 70 MPa hydraulic for 4–6 s, with cooling time of 18–24 s for a 2.5 mm nominal wall. Flammability of the finished interior trim is evaluated under ISO 3795:1989 and FMVSS 302, with burn rate not exceeding 100 mm/min. VOC and semi-volatile emissions are controlled by excluding external lubricants and maintaining the stated moisture target; suppliers validate raw-material emissions using VDA 278:2011 thermal desorption. Published data for this specific ABSOLAC 3000/carbon-black/automotive-tool combination is limited; therefore process-capability studies on production-intent tooling are required before serial release.

Finished components include lower instrument panel trim, centre console side panels, and glovebox outer panels. The grade is not selected for upper instrument panel substrates or for parts in continuous service above 90 °C. Cleaning with aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, methylene chloride, or ketone-based adhesive promoters is avoided on stressed snap-fit ribs because these fluids induce environmental stress cracking. Gate blush and splay excursions are corrected by raising melt temperature within the 240–250 °C range or lowering injection velocity rather than increasing back pressure above 8 bar, which can over-shear the butadiene phase.

How Does Glow-Wire End-Product Testing Constrain Cavity Fill in ABS Surface-Mount Enclosures?

The test method in IEC 60670-1:2019 evaluates the complete enclosure assembly, including bosses, screw towers, and knock-out apertures, rather than a generic plaque. A white surface-mount back box formulation is prepared with 100 parts by mass ABSOLAC 3000, 3.5 parts titanium dioxide masterbatch, and 0.5 part carbon black tint masterbatch; black covers use 2 parts carbon black masterbatch per 100 parts resin. Pellets are dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h to 0.03 wt% moisture. Insufficient drying causes silver streaking at the gate and reduces glow-wire test consistency because residual steam volatilises stabiliser packages.

Melt temperature is maintained at 230–245 °C and mould temperature at 45–60 °C. For an 8-cavity cold-runner tool with a 0.8 mm edge gate per cavity and 2.0 mm nominal wall, a fill time of 3.0–3.6 s avoids jetting; acceleration below 2.8 s produces surface delamination around the gate land. Hold pressure is 55–70 MPa for 4–6 s, with cooling time 12–18 s. Because the unfilled grade does not carry a V-0 classification, the application boundary is limited to enclosures where the glow-wire end-product test is conducted at 650 °C for parts not subject to unattended current above 0.2 A, or at 750 °C on a production-intent unit where the specimen self-extinguishes within 30 s and does not ignite the wrapping tissue specified in IEC 60695-2-11:2021.

    StandardTest conditionProduct boundary
    IEC 60670-1:2019Glow-wire 750 °C ± 10 °CFixed wiring accessory enclosures; self-extinguishment within 30 s
UL 94 6th Edition, Section 73.0 mm horizontal burnHB rating for unmodified ABSOLAC 3000; V-0 not implied
IEC 60695-2-11:2021Glow-wire flammability methodNo ignition of wrapping tissue; no sustained flaming

Terminal product types include surface-mount switch boxes, blanking plates, low-voltage cable duct covers, and socket surrounds. For outdoor installation the resin is not recommended without a UV-stabilised topcoat because prolonged sunlight reduces gloss and impact. If the moulding shop introduces regrind above 15 wt%, glow-wire performance can become erratic due to contamination from dust or nylon fragments; single-source regrind is issued at 15 parts per 85 parts virgin resin and dried separately at 70 °C for 4 h.

A white-pigmented ABSOLAC 3000 compound for domestic appliance fascia panels is proportioned at 100 parts resin, 3.0 parts TiO₂ masterbatch, and 0.5 part carbon black neutral tint per 100 parts by mass; the masterbatch carrier is low-melt-index ABS to maintain melt uniformity. The resin is dried at 80 °C for 3 h, and melt temperature is 235–250 °C with hot-runner drop temperature not exceeding 250 °C. A 2,200 kN hydraulic machine with sequential valve-gated hot runner is used; valve gate opening is delayed by 0.3 s after injection start to avoid drool and cold slug entry. The cavity surface is etched to 18 µm VDI 3400 texture, and pack pressure is set at 55–65 MPa for 3–5 s to hold texture without sink behind stiffening ribs.

Compliance is assigned to IEC 60335-1:2020 Clause 30.2.3.1 for resistance to heat and fire, using a glow-wire test at 650 °C for unattended appliances; UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm is declared for the unfilled compound. Migration of low-molecular-weight additives into printed legends is limited by using a production-intent pad-printing line with solvent-based ink cured at 60 °C for 20 min; post-cure above 70 °C is avoided because it distorts gate bosses and increases gloss on textured surfaces. Cleaning-agent compatibility is restricted to dilute non-ionic detergents; ketone-based cleaning solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons are excluded from production wipe-down because they stress-crack snap-fit towers.

Finished product types are washing-machine top panels, dishwasher control fascia, and micromarketing display frames. The material is not recommended for direct contact with hot oils or for self-cleaning oven consoles where surface temperatures exceed 85 °C. The field-relevant failure mode is gloss change after repeated wipe-down with alcohol-based hand sanitisers; when such exposure is specified, a cross-hatch adhesion test per ISO 2409:2020 is performed on printed or painted areas after 50 double rubs.

When a Multi-Cavity Office Equipment Chassis Tool Is Run With 15 wt% Regrind

Because office equipment chassis tools often run with multiple hot drops, ABSOLAC 3000 is processed as a gravimetrically blended stream of 85 parts virgin resin and 15 parts single-source regrind per 100 parts by mass. Virgin pellets are dried at 80 °C for 3 h; regrind is dried separately at 70 °C for 4 h, because thicker regrind particles absorb moisture at different rates and overdrying causes discolouration in darker pigments. The blend is injected on a 1,800 kN press with a 40 mm screw of L/D 20:1. Melt temperature is 230–245 °C, mould temperature 50–65 °C, and fill time 2.0–2.5 s for a 2.5 mm nominal wall. Three sequential valve gates are opened in 0.4 s intervals; this sequence prevents knit lines from forming at the central boss area. Hold pressure is 45–60 MPa, and cooling time is 16–22 s.

Compliance with IEC 62368-1:2018/A1:2020 is limited to non-mains-enclosure components, paper trays, internal brackets, and unpopulated front bezels where the fire enclosure requirement is met by a separate metal chassis. RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH SVHC obligations are handled by lot-level documentation rather than end-product reformulation. The notched Izod impact strength of the moulded blend is verified per ISO 180:2019 on specimens moulded under ISO 294-1:2017. Published data for this specific regrind ratio is limited; therefore each tool must validate impact at the gate area and weld line.

Product types are printer paper trays, scanner side covers, monitor stand bases, and internal cable-management brackets. Regrind above 20 wt% produces visible dark specks and increases the coefficient of variation of notched Izod from batch to batch; regrind containing nylon dust or silicone mould-release must be rejected before blending. The main process failure is gate blush on high-gloss black office equipment panels; lowering injection velocity from 60 mm/s to 35 mm/s and raising melt temperature to 245 °C reduces blush without increasing cycle time.

Weld Joint Geometry and Residual Stress in Floor-Care Tool Housings

Post-mould linear vibration welding is applied to ABSOLAC 3000 shells for vacuum cleaner dust container halves and floor-care tool bodies. The injection-moulded halves are formed with a double-V weld bead having a 0.6 mm included angle and 1.0–1.5 mm meltdown allowance; the base resin is used at 100 parts with 2 parts of masterbatch, and no external adhesive is used. Before welding, the parts are dried at 70 °C for 2 h; residual moisture above 0.05 wt% produces porosity in the weld flash and intermittent leak paths.

Welding parameters on a 240 Hz linear vibration machine are set to amplitude 1.0–1.5 mm, weld pressure 2.0–3.0 N/mm², and hold time 5–10 s; the welded seam is then pressure-tested to 0.5 bar for wet/dry container sealing. The vessel is certified to IEC 60335-1:2020 Clause 22.35 in the assembled appliance, not as an isolated shell. No flammability upgrade is claimed; the unfilled ABS shell retains UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm.

End-use product types are vacuum cleaner dust compartments, wet/dry collection bins, and hand-held tool bodies. Mould-release silicone must be excluded from the weld bead region because it produces variable weld strength; plasma pre-treatment at 1–2 kW may be used on contaminated lots. Post-weld annealing above 80 °C is avoided because it relaxes injection-induced skin orientation unevenly and can open the joint gap at the handle boss.

    More Introduction

INEOS Styrolution India ABS ABSOLAC 3000 is an unfilled, general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding compound supplied as natural or pre-coloured pellets. The material is classified within the producer’s ABS injection-moulding portfolio as a balance-of-flow grade for short-cycle, ambient-temperature components. Incoming resin specifications are typically controlled against ISO 2580-2:2003 for design and delivery data, while mechanical acceptance data are generated on specimens prepared to ISO 294-1:2017. The melt volume-flow rate is reported as a lot-release parameter rather than a single invariant value; it is measured at 220 °C with a 10 kg piston load under ISO 1133-1:2022. Representative values fall between 18 and 26 cm³/10 min, and the position within this range strongly influences fill speed in thin-wall tools. Density is specified by ISO 1183-1:2019 at 1.03 to 1.06 g/cm³. These values should be read as a commercial grade window; lot-specific certificates of analysis and the current safety data sheet take precedence for contractual acceptance and regulatory determinations.

Representative physical property window for INEOS Styrolution India ABS ABSOLAC 3000; for lot acceptance the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis is decisive.

What limits fill speed below 2.0 mm nominal wall thickness?

The shear-thinning behaviour of ABSOLAC 3000 permits direct gating into ribs and bosses, but the limiting parameter in wall sections below 2.0 mm is usually the pressure drop along the flow path rather than the melt temperature alone. Hydraulic injection pressure measured at the screw tip typically lies between 60 and 110 MPa for multicavity tools with cold-runner diameters of 6 to 10 mm. When the flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratio exceeds 150:1, a fill time below 0.8 s can produce jetting and surface delamination, whereas a fill time above 2.5 s can permit excessive frozen-layer growth and knit-line embrittlement. Production trials on a 100-t toggle-clamp machine with a 40 mm screw and 21:1 L/D ratio have shown that consistent mould fill is achieved when the melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained between 230 °C and 250 °C and the mould surface is held at 40 °C to 70 °C. The relationship between injection speed and surface gloss is non-linear; at melt temperatures above 260 °C, the polybutadiene rubber phase begins to degrade, producing yellowing and a loss of notched impact strength measured to ISO 179-1:2010.

Drying, Barrel Residence, and Screw Recovery Parameters

Moisture is a critical variable. ABSOLAC 3000 is supplied in moisture-protective packaging, but material exposed to ambient air at relative humidity above 60% should be dried in a desiccant dryer to a residual moisture level below 0.1 wt%, determined by ISO 15512:2019. A drying temperature of 80 °C for 2 to 4 hours is typical; temperatures above 95 °C can fuse pellets in the hopper or initiate pre-oxidation. The dryer inlet dew point should remain at or below -35 °C. The barrel profile is normally set with the feed zone at 200 °C to 220 °C, compression at 220 °C to 240 °C, metering at 230 °C to 250 °C, and nozzle at 240 °C to 260 °C. Accumulated residence time at melt temperature above 250 °C should not exceed 5 minutes; longer residence times cross a degradation threshold where rubber-phase crosslinking causes surface roughening and a measurable drop in Charpy notched impact at -30 °C. Screw recovery speed is maintained between 0.2 and 0.4 m/s peripheral speed, and back pressure is set between 0.5 and 1.5 MPa hydraulic to homogenize pellet-to-pellet thermal history without excessive shear heating.

An application where the grade is used without a preceding header is automotive interior trim, including door-handle bezels, centre-console side panels, and seat-belt sleeves. These parts are produced in tools with nominal wall thickness of 2.0 to 3.5 mm and textured cavity surfaces. Mould-abrasion texture class determines the acceptable gate vestige and knit-line position. In production runs, sink marks opposite ribs are controlled by keeping rib thickness below 60% of adjacent wall stock and holding packing pressure until gate freeze is complete. Dimensional stability after 24 h post-mould conditioning at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity is checked against ISO 294-4:2018. Painted interior parts require a substrate surface energy above 38 mN/m after plasma or corona treatment; if the surface energy falls below that value, cross-hatch adhesion tested to ISO 2409:2020 can fall below acceptance limits.

For computer-aided flow analysis, the Cross-WLF coefficients used for ABSOLAC 3000 must be fitted to capillary rheometry data generated to ISO 11443:2021. The use of generic ABS viscosity curves can over-predict pressure drop in thin-wall tools by more than 10%. Simulation inputs should include a no-flow temperature between 120 °C and 140 °C and should be validated against cavity-pressure sensor data at 60% of the maximum injection pressure before gate and runner dimensions are changed.

When regrind ratios exceed 30 wt% in thin-walled enclosures

The incorporation of post-industrial regrind into ABSOLAC 3000 is routinely performed, but the regrind ratio is a process threshold rather than a cosmetic preference. Sprue, runner, and short-shot regrind should be granulated to a particle size distribution with less than 5 wt% fines below 0.5 mm to prevent feeding instability in the hopper. At regrind ratios up to 30 wt%, the notched Charpy impact at 23 °C remains within the typical lot-release band when the regrind is dried identically to virgin resin. Above 30 wt%, two distinct problems are observed in thin-walled electrical enclosures. First, the melt-volume-flow rate can rise by more than 10% relative to the virgin lot because repeated plastication reduces molecular mass distribution; this increases the risk of flash in multi-cavity tools. Second, the loss of rubber-phase elasticity is magnified at low temperatures, and the notched impact at -30 °C can fall below 8 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1:2010. Colour drift is another reason to cap regrind use in natural grades; carbonised fines from degraded sprues produce black specks that are visible against white or grey housing surfaces. Processors that use more than 50 wt% regrind should verify the residence time distribution in the hot runner and monitor injection pressure repeatability to ISO 294-1:2017 because shot-to-shot variation increases when the granulate bulk density fluctuates.

Paint adhesion and electroplating are two post-moulding routes that impose different substrate requirements. For painting, the surface must be free of silicone mould-release residues; silicon at concentrations above 0.2 mg/m² on the surface can reduce cross-hatch adhesion to ISO 2409:2020 from class 0 to class 3. For electroplating, ABSOLAC 3000 is not a dedicated plating grade. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the lower butadiene content needed for flow stability may produce less etchable surface topography than high-gloss plating ABS grades in the same manufacturer range. Where electroplating is specified, the part should be moulded with a generous gate size and minimum internal stress, because chromic-acid etching will preferentially attack high-stress regions and can produce microcracking. Thermal annealing after moulding at 70 °C for 2 hours is sometimes used to reduce moulded-in stress before plating, but the manufacturer’s process bulletin for ABSOLAC 3000 should be consulted for any grade-specific caustic or solvent pre-treatment limitations.

Comparing flame-retardant, high-heat, and extrusion ABS property envelopes

ABSOLAC 3000 is separated from other ABS grades in the producer’s portfolio by its melt-flow and impact balance. High-heat ABS grades rely on modified matrix chemistry to shift the heat deflection temperature upward, but they normally sacrifice melt flow and are processed at higher melt temperatures. Flame-retardant ABS compounds contain brominated or phosphate systems that reduce melt-flow stability; their regulatory documentation includes UL 94 classifications at specified thicknesses, while the unmodified ABSOLAC 3000 is not normally supplied with a flame-retardant package. Extrusion ABS grades have lower MVR values and higher melt strength to prevent sag during sheet or profile calibration; they are typically processed on single-screw extruders with L/D ratios from 24:1 to 33:1, whereas ABSOLAC 3000 is designed for reciprocating-screw injection units with shorter plastication lengths. Replacing ABSOLAC 3000 with an extrusion grade in a multicavity tool reduces fill speed and increases injection pressure; replacing a flame-retardant or high-heat grade with ABSOLAC 3000 is not permissible without revalidation of the end-product thermal and flammability acceptance tests.

Electrical enclosures and low-voltage appliance housings are a further use scenario. For these applications the part designer must define the glow-wire and hot-wire ignition requirements before resin substitution. ABSOLAC 3000 is generally suitable for low-voltage enclosures where the service temperature remains below 70 °C and where no live part is mounted directly on the moulded wall. The material is not suitable for continuous exposure to strong acids, ketones, esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons, or aromatic solvents; these fluids can swell the styrene matrix and stress-crack the moulded surface. When a housing is exposed to isopropanol or ethanol in cleaning operations, exposure should be limited to short wipe-down cycles, and the part should be conditioned at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity for 24 h before dimensional inspection. If the application requires a glow-wire flammable index of 850 °C to 960 °C under IEC 60695-2-12:2021, the unmodified grade must be assessed at the intended wall thickness and colour; compliance cannot be inferred from general-purpose ABS datasheet data.
