Application of INEOS Styrolution ABS TERLURAN 997

Terluran 997 is an injection-molding ABS grade specified for thin-wall, high-gloss, medium-impact downstream components. Material characterization follows ISO 2580-2, melt volume-flow rate is determined by ISO 1133-1:2022, tensile properties by ISO 527-1, Charpy impact by ISO 179-1:2010, and Vicat softening by ISO 306. The application scenarios below are limited to sectors with documented injection-molding conversion for this grade. Extrapolation to sheet extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, or solvent casting requires separate validation because the rheology and thermal stability are not interchangeable across these processes.

When high-gloss thin-wall enclosures for small kitchen appliances are specified, the material is selected for melt-flow length in multi-cavity tools and its ability to reproduce polished cavity surfaces. In electric kettle side panels, bean-to-cup coffee machine front frames, hand blender motor shells, and food processor body covers, the molded wall thickness typically falls between 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm, with local ribs and bosses at 0.9–1.2 mm. Under IEC 60335-1 and EN 60335-2-15, the external enclosure must withstand ball pressure testing at 75 °C under IEC 60695-10-2, and accessible surfaces must comply with glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 where the appliance connection is unattended. For repeated-use food-contact surfaces, the finished article is tested under Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 by overall migration using EN 1186-1, with the limit of 10 mg/dm²; in the United States, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers are evaluated under 21 CFR 180.22. Because the unmodified grade is not inherently flame-retardant, any enclosure adjacent to uninsulated live parts requires additional assessment, and published data for this specific configuration is limited.

On the production floor, the formulation is a let-down of 100 phr Terluran 997 with 2.0–4.0 phr color masterbatch carried on an ABS or SAN carrier. External lubricant addition is held to ≤0.3 phr because free lubricant migrates to the cavity surface and produces flow-line haze under high-polish finish. Regrind from the same grade is limited to ≤20 phr; above this threshold, batch-to-batch Charpy notched impact values can drift downward by more than 10% and polybutadiene phase embrittlement becomes measurable under ISO 179-1:2010. The granules are dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h to a residual moisture of ≤0.05% by ISO 15512, with a dew point of −30 °C or lower. A single-screw injection unit with a 20:1–22:1 L/D screw and a ring-check non-return valve is used; melt temperature is 230–250 °C, mold temperature 50–70 °C, holding pressure 40–60 MPa, and back pressure 0.5–1.5 MPa. The hot runner is valve-gated, with sequential valve opening delayed by 0.2–0.6 s to displace knit lines from the visible Class A surface.

The main process conflict is temperature asymmetry between the high-gloss exterior and thick bosses. If the mold is run below 50 °C, gloss replication drops and the visible surface develops micro-flow lines; if the mold is run above 70 °C, cycle time increases, and ejection marks appear on bosses exceeding a 1.5:1 base-to-height ratio. The acceptable processing window is therefore narrow, typically ±5 °C on the fixed half and ±4 °C on the moving half. Cavity surface roughness should be held below Ra 0.05 µm on the high-gloss side, while the rib side may use Ra 0.8 µm to improve venting. Terminal product types include electric kettle side housings, bean-to-cup coffee machine front bezels, hand blender motor covers, and food processor side shells; all are produced with a high-gloss external surface and a ribbed reverse face for snap-fit assembly.

Why do automotive interior programs require low-fogging high-flow ABS?

Automotive interior trim manufactured from Terluran 997 includes instrument cluster bezels, center console side panels, steering column shrouds, door switch bezels, and speaker grilles. These parts are not structural load-paths but are visible and tactile surfaces, so the material must balance high flow against low volatile condensables and scratch resistance. Automotive converters must maintain IATF 16949 process control and submit PPAP documentation. Flammability is evaluated under ISO 3795 and FMVSS 302; interior parts must meet a burn rate below 100 mm/min in the direction of propagation. Low-fogging and odor limits are tested per ISO 6452, VDA 275, and VDA 270, with OEM-specific maximums. For black piano-black trim, formulation uses 100 phr Terluran 997, 1.5–2.5 phr high-pigment black masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 phr hindered phenolic antioxidant, and 0.1–0.3 phr processing stabilizer. UV stabilization is added at 0.3 phr only when the trim is exposed to direct side-window sunlight; otherwise it is omitted to reduce material cost and potential plate-out.

Processing uses a melt temperature of 220–240 °C and a mold temperature of 30–50 °C for textured interiors. If a piano-black Class A surface is required, mold temperature is raised to 60–80 °C, but this lowers impact strength and increases cycle time by 15–25%. The material must be dried to ≤0.05% moisture. Valves are sequentially opened on the hot runner to prevent visible knit lines at the perimeter of the speaker grille holes. The most common failure mode on production lines is splay on the boss near the parting line if the screw speed exceeds 80 rpm and melt residence time exceeds 8 min; high-friction shear causes local heating in the barrel above 260 °C, degrading the polybutadiene phase. Scrap rates from batch-to-batch color variation are controlled by weighing masterbatch at 2.0 phr ±0.1 phr using gravimetric feeders, not volumetric dosing. Terminal products include cluster bezels, center console inserts, door handle recesses, steering column covers, and HVAC control panels. If electroplating is specified, an electroplating-grade ABS with controlled butadiene phase size should be evaluated; published data for Terluran 997 in chrome-plated automotive trim is limited.

Power adapter and router shells present a rheology-limited process window in multi-cavity, hot-runner molds with wall sections frequently reduced to 0.9–1.2 mm. In these parts, the governing compliance framework is IEC 62368-1 for audio/video and information technology equipment, supplemented by UL 94 HB flammability classification and the European RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU with its delegated directive (EU) 2015/863. REACH SVHC screening is applied to imported feedstock and finished articles. The formulation is kept as simple as possible: 100 phr Terluran 997 plus 2.0–3.0 phr carbon black masterbatch for black enclosures; for light gray or white shells, a titanium dioxide-containing masterbatch at 3.0–4.0 phr is used, but the carrier must be SAN or ABS to avoid surface delamination. Regrind at ≤15 phr is recommended because thin-wall filling length falls measurably above this level due to melt-flow reduction after multiple heat histories. An antistatic additive is generally not required for router shells because surface resistivity is not specified for this class.

On the injection-molding line, the melt temperature is set at 230–250 °C and mold temperature at 40–60 °C. Thin walls demand high injection speed, often 80–120 mm/s ram speed depending on screw diameter, with holding pressure 50–70 MPa and cooling time from 8 s to 14 s for a 1.0 mm wall with a 60 °C mold. Back pressure is limited to 0.5–1.0 MPa to avoid excess shear heating. The main process risk is short-shot at the last-fill area when the flow length/wall thickness ratio exceeds 120:1; this is corrected by adding a flow leader or moving the gate, not by raising melt temperature above 260 °C. Terminal products include router base shells, optical network terminal top covers, smart speaker frames, power adapter housings, and remote control battery covers.

Toy and juvenile product components under EN 71-3 migration limits

Injection-molded toy components made from Terluran 997 include interlocking construction blocks, board game tokens, toy vehicle body shells, and action figure accessories. The regulatory load is higher than for industrial goods. Under EN 71-3, accessible polymer substrates and dried coating layers are tested for migration of 19 elements, with limits that vary by element and material category. In the United States, ASTM F963-23 and 16 CFR 1303 govern heavy metals and small parts, while 16 CFR 1307 restricts specific phthalates in accessible plasticized components. Terluran 997 is unplasticized, but masterbatch carriers must be verified under REACH Annex XVII for phthalate content. The formulation is 100 phr Terluran 997 with 2.0–4.0 phr color masterbatch; only pigments listed as compliant with EN 71-3 are used. No external lubricant is added because silicone migrating to the surface could affect print adhesion on board game tokens. Regrind is limited to ≤10 phr when the part is a small component that can be placed in a small-parts cylinder under ISO 8124-1; higher regrind may increase brittleness after repeated drop cycles.

Processing is straightforward and deliberately conservative. The granules are dried at 80 °C for 3 h, melt temperature is held at 220–240 °C, and mold temperature is set at 40 °C. Injection speed is moderate to reduce weld lines at gate regions, and holding pressure is 35–50 MPa. The main field failure is drop-impact cracking at the weld line near the gate, which is corrected by increasing mold temperature to 50 °C or moving the gate to a non-appearance area. Terminal toys are not painted; color is integral to the polymer to avoid flaking and small-part ingestion. The final parts are washed or wiped with ethanol only if mold release-free processing cannot be maintained; otherwise no post-mold surface treatment is needed.

When valve-gated hot runners are used for wall sections below 1.2 mm

When the tool contains valve-gated hot runners and the nominal wall section falls below 1.2 mm, Terluran 997 is used for electrical installation faceplates, junction box covers, and control panel bezels. The compliance stack is dominated by IEC 60670-1 for boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories, IEC 60669-1 for switches, and IEC 60529 for ingress protection marking where the product is sealed with a gasket. Glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 is typically performed at 650 °C or 750 °C depending on the final product standard; unmodified Terluran 997 does not satisfy 750 °C glow-wire at 0.8 mm without an FR package, so the application must be limited to lower-temperature accessibility classes or an FR ABS grade must be substituted. The formulation is 100 phr Terluran 997 with 2.0–3.0 phr color masterbatch. For white faceplates, the titanium dioxide content in the finished part is 2.0–2.5 wt%, which is sufficient for hiding power without causing excessive nozzle wear if screw tip clearance is maintained.

Processing conditions are set to balance surface gloss and dimensional stability. The melt temperature is 230–250 °C, mold temperature 60–80 °C, holding pressure 50–65 MPa, and back pressure 0.8–1.2 MPa. Valve pins are opened when the melt front reaches the gate, not on a fixed timer, to avoid gate blush. The most common injection defect is weld line formation around the switch aperture; the weld line is moved into a non-visible edge by offsetting the gate or adding a flow-restrictor channel. Because the wall is thin, cooling time is held between 6 s and 12 s, and ejection is assisted by a two-stage ejector with air poppets to prevent white stress marks on the high-gloss surface. Terminal products include rocker switch faceplates, rotary dimmer knobs, socket outlet cover plates, and DIN rail enclosure front panels.

    More Introduction

INEOS Styrolution TERLURAN 997 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin formulated for injection moulding applications where high melt fluidity must be balanced against notched impact resistance and heat deflection. The grade is supplied as cylindrical pellets with a typical density of 1.05 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183-1. Its defining rheological characteristic is a melt volume rate of 45 cm³/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg load, determined in accordance with ISO 1133-1. This places TERLURAN 997 in the high-flow segment of general-purpose ABS materials, above conventional medium-flow grades that typically display melt volume rates of 15–25 cm³/10 min under the same test condition. The grade is not a flame-retardant or high-heat ABS; its performance envelope is directed toward thin-wall housings, large-area panels, and multi-cavity tools where pressure-limited filling or cycle-time reduction controls manufacturing economics.

When moisture control governs batch-to-batch moulding consistency

Pre-drying of TERLURAN 997 is required because absorbed water is evolved in the melt and produces surface splay, nozzle drool, and reduced impact toughness. Production-scale drying is performed in a desiccant-bed dryer with a dew point of −20 °C or lower and an airflow rate of 1.85 m³/h per kg/h of polymer throughput. Drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h lowers pellet moisture below 0.1 wt%, which is the accepted upper limit for ABS injection moulding. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, or when regrind fractions above 20% are used, drying time is extended to 4–6 h unless residual moisture is verified by a moisture analyser. Hopper residence time at drying temperature should not exceed 2 h; longer residence promotes yellowing of the butadiene phase. Regrind from sprues and runners is usually limited to 20–30% by weight because repeated thermal history reduces impact strength and increases the risk of black specks in light-coloured parts.

Processing on a reciprocating-screw injection moulding machine is carried out with a general-purpose three-zone screw having an 18:1–22:1 length-to-diameter ratio and a compression ratio of 2.5:1. Barrel temperature profiles are set from approximately 210 °C in the rear zone to 250 °C at the nozzle, while the actual melt temperature is maintained between 240 °C and 260 °C with an inserted pyrometer. Mould surface temperature is controlled between 40 °C and 80 °C. The lower range is used where dimensional stability and short cycle time are prioritised; the upper range improves weld-line strength and reproduction of textured cavity surfaces. Injection speed is set medium to high, with first-stage pressure sufficient to fill 90–95% of cavity volume before transfer to holding pressure. A back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa is maintained during screw recovery to homogenise the melt and avoid unmelted pellets. Screw rotation speed is kept below 100 min⁻¹ for a 40 mm screw to limit shear-induced overheating. Melt residence above 260 °C or beyond 5 min produces thermal-oxidative degradation, observable as yellowing and a measurable decrease in Charpy notched impact strength.

What distinguishes Terluran 997 from lower-flow and high-impact ABS grades?

The primary difference between TERLURAN 997 and lower-flow ABS grades is the melt volume rate of 45 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1, which reduces pressure loss along runners and cavity walls. At equivalent mould temperature and wall thickness, this viscosity advantage allows longer flow lengths or lower injection-pressure demand. However, published data for this specific configuration is limited for wall thickness below 0.8 mm. High-impact ABS grades often report Charpy notched impact strength above 20 kJ/m² at 23 °C according to ISO 179/1eA; TERLURAN 997 is rated at 17 kJ/m². At −30 °C the divergence is wider, with TERLURAN 997 at 8 kJ/m² and high-impact ABS grades commonly above 15 kJ/m². High-heat ABS grades may exhibit Vicat softening temperatures above 105 °C under ISO 306; TERLURAN 997 has a Vicat VST/B/50 value of 96 °C. The selection logic is therefore process-driven: TERLURAN 997 is chosen when thin-wall filling, multi-cavity balance, or cycle-time reduction is the governing requirement, while high-impact grades are chosen when low-temperature ductility or crack-propagation resistance is the critical design limit.

Mechanical performance data under ISO 527-2, ISO 179/1eA and ISO 178

Typical tensile stress at yield for TERLURAN 997 is 45 MPa tested as ISO 527-2/1A/50. The tensile modulus is 2500 MPa under ISO 527-2/1A/1, and nominal strain at break is 8%. This elongation value indicates limited ductility compared with high-impact ABS grades that may exceed 20%. Charpy notched impact strength is 17 kJ/m² at 23 °C and 8 kJ/m² at −30 °C under ISO 179/1eA. Flexural modulus is typically 2400 MPa under ISO 178, providing adequate stiffness for large-area panels without excessive weight. Vicat softening temperature VST/B/50 is 96 °C under ISO 306. The material is rated HB under UL 94 at 1.5 mm thickness. These values are typical and not specification limits; part design should use supplier lot-specific data where load-bearing or temperature-dependent properties are critical.

Thin-wall housings for power tools, vacuum cleaners, and small electrical appliances are filled with TERLURAN 997 at nominal wall stock of 1.2–2.0 mm. Multi-cavity tools with 8–16 cavities benefit from the high melt volume rate because cavity-to-cavity fill imbalance is reduced when runner pressure loss is lower. On machines with clamp force of 1,500 kN, thin-wall components are typically filled in 0.5–1.0 s, although published data for this specific configuration is limited to production trials. Automotive interior trim components are moulded from TERLURAN 997 with textured cavity surfaces; mould temperature is raised to 70–80 °C to reproduce grain depth and strengthen weld lines formed around holes and bosses.

Weld-line strength in TERLURAN 997 is lower than in high-impact ABS grades because the butadiene-rich phase is less effective at healing across flow fronts. For multi-gated parts or parts with bosses, knit-line impact may drop to 30–50% of the bulk Charpy value. Injection velocity and mould temperature should therefore be increased, and gate positions shifted to move weld lines outside structurally loaded regions. Dimensional stabilisation after demoulding is governed by post-mould shrinkage of 0.4–0.7% under ISO 294-4. Critical dimensions are not measured until 24 h after moulding at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity to allow post-mould shrinkage to occur.

Regulatory compliance does not follow automatically from base polymer type

TERLURAN 997 is generally assessed for compliance with REACH Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 and the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended. Specific SVHC declarations and lot-level compliance should be confirmed from the supplier safety data sheet. No blanket food-contact clearance under FDA 21 CFR 181.32 or EU Regulation 10/2011 is implied for this grade unless a specific grade letter and application review are issued by the manufacturer. Chemical resistance is typical of ABS: the polymer resists aqueous acids, alkalis, and aliphatic hydrocarbons at ambient temperature but is attacked by ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents. Stress cracking may occur when moulded parts are exposed to dilute organic acids, hand creams, or cutting oils under residual moulding stress; suitability must be evaluated under end-use loading according to ASTM D543. Outdoor UV exposure causes surface yellowing and embrittlement; black UV-stabilised variants are preferred for exterior use. Continuous load-bearing service above 70 °C should not be specified without heat-ageing validation because the Vicat softening temperature is 96 °C and deformation under load is influenced by part geometry, wall thickness, and stress level.
