Application of INEOS Styrolution ABS NOVODUR P2H-AT

P2H-AT is an antistatic, electroplatable acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding pellet used where high notched impact strength, medium heat resistance, and low moulding shrinkage at wall thickness 1.5–3.0 mm govern the assembly. The antistatic package does not remove the need for moisture control: predrying in a desiccant hot-air dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to a residual moisture content below 0.1% by ISO 15512 is the first continuous-process control; hopper dew points above −20 °C produce surface splay in thin-gate areas. For antistatic surface resistivity, IEC 62631-3-2 is the test method used to verify product-specific values. When released for injection moulding, melt temperature is held between 220 °C and 260 °C, and mould temperature is held between 40 °C and 80 °C. The following downstream sectors are restricted to applications in which these processing limits and the compliance matrix below are satisfied.

What Drying and Gate Freeze Deviations Generate Splay and Weld-Line Flaking in Automotive Interior Mouldings?

In automotive interior trim, P2H-AT functions as the substrate resin for injection moulded components that are later grained, painted, or cover-stocked. The compliance boundary for production release includes VDA 278:2011 thermal desorption for VOC and fogging condensate, VDA 275:2017 for formaldehyde, FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795 for horizontal burn rate, DIN 75201 for windscreen fogging, and REACH Annex XVII for restricted substance management. The formulation ratio at the moulding floor is 96–98 wt% P2H-AT and 2–4 wt% ABS/SAN-based colour masterbatch; injection regrind is limited to 20 wt% because higher post-consumer ABS fractions reduce Charpy notched impact and produce inconsistent grain retention at knit lines. The downstream production route is desiccant-air predrying, reciprocating-screw injection moulding, degating, optional plasma treatment at 1–2 kW corona discharge, and low-VOC paint adhesion. On a 300–450 t hydraulic injection machine with a 25–35 mm general-purpose screw, melt temperature is set at 230–250 °C, mould temperature at 50–70 °C, and injection speed at 60–120 mm/s. Terminal product types include glovebox bins, lower instrument panel trim, door panel inserts, seat side shields, and centre console side covers.

The critical processing conflict in automotive grained surfaces is simultaneous retention of leather-grain replication and avoidance of butadiene-phase thermal degradation. Mould temperatures below 40 °C freeze the melt before the texture peak is fully reproduced, leaving gloss differences and visible flow lines; temperatures above 80 °C increase cooling time beyond 25 s and may cause ejection pin white breaking. At melt temperature above 260 °C, residence time must be reduced below 5 min; at 250 °C, total barrel residence below 8 min is required because the unsaturated butadiene phase begins to generate odour and yellowing that is not correctable by colorant adjustment. Weld-line impact loss is controlled by gate placement rather than by raising melt temperature alone. Subsurface knit lines generated by multi-drop hot-runner gating within 0.5 mm of a living hinge produce notch-sensitive failure below 4 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1/1eA at −30 °C; direct edge gating with one gate per 1,200 mm² of projected area reduces this loss to under 15% of unfilled matrix impact. Venting is set at 0.02–0.04 mm depth to avoid flash while preventing gas burns at the end of fill. These processing boundaries are derived from failure records on unfilled ABS lines producing instrument panel substrates with wall thickness 2.0–2.5 mm and not from small-scale laboratory discs.

Electrical Enclosure Rib Distortion and IEC 62368-1 Fire Enclosure Constraints

P2H-AT enters electronics manufacturing as both antistatic component trays and non-flame-retardant equipment enclosures where rib layout, snap-fit geometry, and electrostatic-discharge control dominate. The applicable standard set includes IEC 61340-5-1 for ESD protected areas, IEC 62631-3-2 for surface resistivity, IEC 62368-1:2023 Clause 6.2 for fire enclosure requirements, IEC 60695-11-10 for vertical and horizontal burning, UL 94 Yellow Card listings, and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. The antistatic package in P2H-AT is designed for surface resistivity approximately 109–1012 ohm; therefore no external antistatic masterbatch is required for standard component trays or enclosure interiors. If a specification requires surface resistivity below 109 ohm, 1–3 wt% conductive carbon black masterbatch is added, and notched Izod impact is reduced by up to 20%. Colour is adjusted with 2–3 wt% light-stable masterbatch. When in-house compounding is performed, a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D is operated at 220–240 °C and 250–350 rpm, with a 200 µm melt filter. Injection moulding uses a three-plate mould with wall thickness 1.8–2.2 mm, melt temperature 230–250 °C, mould temperature 45–60 °C, back pressure 5–10 bar, and holding pressure 30–50% of peak injection pressure. Ribs are limited to 50–60% of adjoining nominal wall; rib thickness above 70% produces sink and shadow marks on the opposite surface. Finished product types are antistatic component trays, router lower housings, power adapter shells, telecommunication faceplates, and desktop apparatus enclosures.

White goods control-panel carriers and vacuum cleaner motor housings using P2H-AT are processed under IEC 60335-1:2020 Clause 30.2 needle-flame and glow-wire verification, IEC 60695-2-12 and IEC 60695-2-13 for glow-wire ignition, and EN 50581 for RoHS technical documentation. P2H-AT is incorporated as the principal structural resin at 95–98 wt%, with 2–4 wt% appliance-grade colour masterbatch and 0.1–0.3 wt% processing stabilizer masterbatch; external plasticizers are not added because they lower heat deflection temperature and increase stress cracking at mounting bosses. The production route is direct hot-runner gating into a multi-cavity mould, degating, ultrasonic welding or screw-boss insertion, and pad printing. For vacuum cleaner motor housings with nominal wall 2.5 mm, a three-plate mould on a 350 t toggle clamp machine is operated at melt temperature 240–255 °C, cooling time 18–25 s, and hold weight consistency ±0.3%. Brass insert preheat below 80 °C is a documented failure source because local quenching creates tensile hoop stress and microcracks after screw insertion; inserts above 80 °C avoid this failure in production records. The snap-fit design limit is 0.8 mm deflection at a nominal strain below 0.5%; higher strain initiates stress whitening at gate-adjacent weld lines. Finished product types are control-panel frames, detergent dispenser housings, motor shrouds, handle brackets, and rear cover panels.

When Sanitary Fitting Covers Replace Electroplated ABS in Humid Assembly Environments

In sanitary fitting covers, P2H-AT is used as an electroplating or painting substrate where sustained humidity, detergent contact, and dimensional stability control the specification. The applicable compliance documentation includes REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU; P2H-AT is not rated for pressurized potable-water pipe threads or continuous hot-water immersion above 60 °C. Formulation for electroplating requires 100 wt% virgin P2H-AT because regrind as low as 5 wt% changes etchant attack and reduces plating adhesion; for painted or top-coated covers, 2–4 wt% moisture-resistant colour masterbatch is permitted. The downstream production sequence is predrying, injection moulding with a mould temperature of 60–80 °C, tempering at 70 °C for 2 h, chromic acid etching, electroless nickel/copper deposition, and decorative chrome plating. Mould temperatures below 60 °C produce a low-surface-energy skin that causes skip plating at edge radii; melt temperature above 260 °C leaves decomposition residues that require excessive etching and reduces plate gloss. Electroplated adhesion is validated by thermal cycling and peel testing according to ASTM B533 and ISO 2819; because published data for P2H-AT in this specific configuration is limited, acceptance values are derived from part-specific validation rather than generic tables. Finished product types are shower head covers, faucet trim rings, toilet seat hinges, and wall-mounted soap dish covers.

Toy and hobby-equipment shell moulding uses P2H-AT where high impact toughness and tight dimensional tolerances are required for snap-fit closures and drop-loaded surfaces. Compliance is driven by EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of 19 elements, ASTM F963-23 for soluble heavy metals and mechanical hazards, REACH Annex XVII entries 51 and 52, and CPSIA Section 108 for phthalate content. The formulation ratio is 93–97 wt% P2H-AT, 2–5 wt% cadmium-free and lead-free thermoplastic colour masterbatch, and 0.5–1.0 wt% inorganic matting agent when surface gloss below 30 Gardner units is specified; no phthalate plasticizers or brominated flame retardants are added. Injection moulding is performed with melt temperature 220–245 °C, mould temperature 30–50 °C, and cycle time 25–40 s for wall thickness 1.5–2.0 mm; ultrasonic welding of ABS shells is executed at 20 kHz with amplitude 25–35 µm and weld time 0.15–0.35 s. A process limitation is the absence of UV stabilization in P2H-AT; outdoor ride-on toy body panels require opaque coatings or UV-stabilized capstock because direct sunlight causes surface chalking and loss of impact. Finished product types are constructional toy blocks, hobby model housings, craft storage shells, and small ride-on vehicle body panels.

For laboratory instrument enclosures and non-patient-contact diagnostic housings, P2H-AT is processed as a structural shell material when the assembly is classified under IEC 61010-1:2010+A1:2016 Clause 7.3 flame spread and ISO 12100 machinery risk assessment. Because P2H-AT is not supplied as a medical-grade resin with an ISO 10993-1:2018 biological evaluation package, applications with repeated skin contact exceeding 30 min or mucous-membrane contact are outside the technically validated boundary. Formulation is limited to 97–100 wt% P2H-AT with 0–2 wt% external antistatic masterbatch only if lower than standard antistatic surface resistivity is required, and 0–1 wt% silicone-free demoulding additive; filler addition above 5 wt% is not recommended because it alters the Charpy notched impact transition below −20 °C. Production uses a two-cavity injection mould with a single hot runner, melt temperature 235–250 °C, mould temperature 50–65 °C, robotic extraction, and controlled cooling time 12–18 s. The mechanical design limit is a snap-arm thickness of 0.9 mm with open-door hinge flexural strain below 0.8%; exceedance produces gate-adjacent microcracking after 10,000 cycles in laboratory fatigue testing. Finished product types are diagnostic device top covers, bench analyser bezels, portable detector housings, and laboratory power supply enclosures.

    More Introduction

Specified as an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade, INEOS Styrolution ABS NOVODUR P2H-AT is a two-phase thermoplastic in which a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer matrix contains a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase. The material is classified under ISO 1043-1 as ABS and is supplied in pellet form with typical density near 1.04 g/cm³ measured to ISO 1183-1. The supplier technical data sheet reports melt volume-flow rate of approximately 21 cm³/10 min at 220 °C and 10 kg load according to ISO 1133-1:2022. This flow range places the grade in the high-flow segment of the Novodur P2 family, but the value is a typical lot value rather than a specification limit. Tensile stress at yield measured according to ISO 527-2 at 50 mm/min is typically 40 MPa, tensile modulus approximately 2000 MPa, and Charpy notched impact strength to ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C is typically 19 kJ/m². These values are generated on standardized injection-moulded test plaques and should not be directly transferred to load-bearing sections with variable weld lines.

P2H-AT is not a filled, flame-retardant, or conductive compound in standard form. The grade is intended for injection moulding of technical housings, appliance panels, and electrical enclosures where high flow permits wall sections below 2.0 mm and where ambient-temperature impact resistance is sufficient. Its processing window is wider than that of high-heat ABS or polycarbonate blends, but continuous-use temperature capability is lower than those materials.

What distinguishes the P2H-AT grade from medium-flow and high-heat ABS alternatives?

The P2H modification is differentiated by a high melt volume-flow rate relative to medium-flow grades in the same series. Medium-flow ABS alternatives typically run at melt flow rates 20% to 30% lower under identical ISO 1133 conditions; the practical effect is that P2H-AT can fill longer thin-wall flow paths at lower injection pressure, but may sacrifice a small amount of low-temperature impact. High-heat ABS grades based on α-methylstyrene comonomers or maleimide modification may show Vicat softening temperatures 10 K to 20 K higher than the 96 °C typical VST/B/50 of P2H-AT, but those grades also require higher melt and mould temperatures and typically show lower melt flow and lower notched impact. Polycarbonate/ABS blends move heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa above approximately 100 °C, but their melt viscosity is higher and their price per kilogram is higher; P2H-AT should not be used as a direct substitute when heat deflection under load is the controlling requirement.

The following table lists representative property values from the supplier technical data sheet for P2H-AT:

All table entries are typical values, not guaranteed specifications; lot-specific certificates of analysis govern production release.

Drying is the dominant pre-treatment variable for this grade. A desiccant dryer with a dew point below -30 °C and an air temperature of 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h is specified when residual moisture must remain below 0.05% by mass. At ambient relative humidity above 60%, pellets take up surface moisture within hours; splay, silver streaks, and loss of Charpy notched impact at the gate region are observed on injection lines when drying is omitted. Hopper protection under dry air is necessary for production runs exceeding 8 h. Vented barrels alone do not substitute for pellet pre-drying in ABS; moisture-induced surface defects and localised molecular weight reduction in the SAN phase are process-linked failure modes.

Rheology and gate freeze-off behaviour in thin-wall injection tools

P2H-AT undergoes pseudoplastic flow; apparent viscosity decreases sharply as shear rate rises during filling. Capillary and slit-die measurements under typical melt temperatures of 230 °C to 250 °C produce apparent viscosity near 150 Pa·s to 250 Pa·s at 1000 s⁻¹, while at 100 s⁻¹ values may exceed 600 Pa·s. This behaviour favours rapid fill of thin sections, but increases pressure loss in long cold-runner channels. Gate design must therefore account for fast gate freeze once wall temperature drops below the glass transition of the SAN phase. On injection lines using 40 mm or 50 mm screw diameters with L/D ratios between 20:1 and 24:1, screw recovery speed should be set to avoid melt temperature overshoot above 260 °C; decomposition of the polybutadiene phase then manifests as yellow streaking and impact reduction. A decompression of 2 mm to 3 mm before plastication is commonly used to reduce gas entrapment.

Mould temperature is typically 40 °C to 70 °C. Below 40 °C, weld-line strength in thin ribs can fall below unreinforced design assumptions; above 70 °C, cycle time increases without proportional gain in impact. Holding pressure must be maintained until gate seal; for cold runners, gate diameter should not be less than 60% of the adjoining wall stock, with 0.8 mm the practical lower limit for unreinforced ABS in published moulding trials. Clamp force screening can be based on 3 kN/cm² to 5 kN/cm² of projected area at cavity pressures of 35 MPa to 50 MPa near the gate. Thin-wall flow length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 150:1 require high injection velocity and may exceed these clamp estimates because of runner pressure losses.

P2H-AT is supplied ready for injection moulding; it does not require compounding or masterbatch addition. External mould-release sprays should be qualified before use because silicone or hydrocarbon residues alter printing and antistatic surface behaviour. Hot-runner manifold temperatures of 220 °C to 250 °C are generally suitable; prolonged residence above 260 °C is not recommended.

When charge dissipation and surface cleanliness dominate component specification

The AT designation is associated with a modified surface-resistivity profile relative to general-purpose ABS. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; surface resistance measurements on moulded parts should be performed to IEC 62631-3-2 at 23 °C and 50% RH, not on pellets or unwashed test plaques. Mould-release chemistry, humidity, dust retention, and surface wiping alter measured resistance. Typical antistatic ABS may fall in the 10¹⁰ Ω to 10¹² Ω range under standard conditioning, but values below 10⁹ Ω are not characteristic of this antistatic modification and should not be specified without written supplier confirmation. Charge decay below 2 s at 12% RH is likewise outside the intended envelope for unfilled antistatic ABS; conductive ABS or polycarbonate compounds are required for that performance range.

Antistatic performance does not confer flame retardancy. Parts requiring UL 94 V-0 or V-1 at thin wall must be moulded from flame-retardant grades, not P2H-AT. The standard formulation is generally classified UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm thickness, but the applicable yellow card for the specific colour and wall section controls. No claim is made for food-contact status under FDA 21 CFR or European food-contact regulations unless a specific food-contact addendum is issued for the exact grade and colour.

Electrical enclosure housings with wall sections approaching 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm and an operating environment below 60 °C can be moulded from P2H-AT because the shear-thinning flow reduces short shots in multi-cavity tools. Weld lines at bosses and snap-fit features should be located away from drop-load points; Charpy notched impact at 23 °C of 19 kJ/m² is not maintained in knit lines, and published data for this specific configuration is limited below 10 kJ/m² at weld-line locations. At -30 °C, notched impact falls below 8 kJ/m², so cold-climate enclosures require testing or a higher-impact grade. The material is incompatible with aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and strong organic solvents, which dissolve or stress-crack the SAN matrix. Environmental stress-cracking resistance should be tested according to ISO 22088 under the exact assembly fluid or cleaning agent. P2H-AT is not recommended for continuous load-bearing service above 70 °C or intermittent exposure above 80 °C without a heat-deflection analysis.

Thermal ageing and solvent exposure shift failure modes beyond ambient impact data

Long-term thermal ageing of ABS reduces the polybutadiene phase’s ability to absorb impact energy through cavitation. Ageing at 80 °C can produce measurable notched-impact loss depending on stabiliser package, specimen thickness, and oxygen access; published data for this specific grade under those conditions is limited, so part-level ageing under the actual service temperature and strain is required. This behaviour is more relevant in high-flow grades because thin-wall parts have high surface-to-volume ratios. Solvent contact often produces crazing at concentrations far below the equilibrium swelling threshold; therefore a solvent wipe test is insufficient for release. ISO 22088 environmental stress-cracking testing with the specific solvent, from 0.5% strain to 1.5% strain, separates cracking from simple softening. Injection-moulded parts with heavy orientation near the gate may crack at lower strain than isotropic test bars.

Regrind from P2H-AT runners and rejected parts can be reintroduced into the feed stream at levels up to 20% without measurable shift in melt volume-flow rate, provided the regrind is dried to below 0.05% moisture and is not contaminated with dust or mould-release agents. At 30% regrind or higher, batch viscosity can decrease due to slight molecular weight degradation and reduced rubber phase integrity; notched impact at -30 °C is the property most sensitive to repeated heat history. Closed-loop regrind systems should include a melt filter and feedstock control to reduce lot-to-lot colour shift. Published data for this specific configuration is limited above 10 heat histories; therefore packaging from repeatedly recycled material is not covered by the datasheet claims.

Under normal supply conditions, P2H-AT is formulated to comply with the current REACH candidate list and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU restrictions; however, certification is shipment-specific and should be obtained from the supplier for each manufacturing site. Recycling and disposal follow local polymer waste codes. No statement is made for REACH SVHCs above the declaration threshold without current lot documentation.
