Within fenestration coextrusion, Centrex® ASA 821 functions as the weather-resistant capstock over rigid PVC-U substrates where the capstock is melt-fused at the feedblock and then drawn into the profile geometry. The relevant European product standard EN 12608-1:2016 governs dimensional and material requirements for PVC-U window and door profiles, while accelerated weathering of the capstock is typically assessed according to DIN EN 513:2018 and ISO 4892-2:2013 method A, cycle 1; commercial capstock qualification commonly sets a colour change ΔE*ab below 5.0 and 60° gloss retention above 50% after 8,000 h xenon-arc exposure. The cap layer is metered at 0.15 mm to 0.30 mm, which for a PVC-U wall of 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm corresponds to 6.0 wt% to 9.0 wt% ASA in the finished lineal; a SAN-carrier colour masterbatch is introduced at 2.0 wt% to 4.0 wt% into the cap extruder, beyond which die-lip plate-out and melt-pressure oscillation have been documented on production lines. The coextrusion line is typically configured with a counter-rotating twin-screw main extruder for the PVC-U substrate and a 45 mm single-screw cap extruder with an L/D 32:1 barrel, static mixer, and gear pump; the ASA melt temperature is controlled at 220°C to 240°C, while the calibration table vacuum is held at 0.06 MPa to 0.08 MPa and line speed is adjusted between 1.5 m/min and 3.0 m/min to stabilise drawdown. Field-observed failure modes include cap-layer delamination when the PVC-U surface temperature falls below 170°C before feedblock entry, and premature yellowing when ASA residence time above 230°C exceeds 12 min during cycle interruptions. Finished article types produced from this configuration include coextruded window lineals, door profiles, siding profiles, and decorative drip-edge components.
In automotive exterior trim, Centrex® ASA 821 is injected into thin-wall geometries where flow-path-to-wall-thickness ratios above 120:1 are used for mass reduction; the practical flow limit is determined by the manufacturer-reported melt volume rate of approximately 20 cm³/10 min at 220°C/10 kg, verified by ISO 1133-1:2022 against the processor’s incoming resin lot. The formulation is processed neat with carbon black masterbatch at 1.0 wt% to 1.5 wt% and an internal mould-release additive at 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt%; resins are pre-dried at 80°C for 4 h to a moisture content below 0.05 wt%, because splay in textured grained surfaces appears once free moisture exceeds 0.08 wt%. Qualification for exterior OEM programs generally uses ISO 4892-2:2013 for artificial weathering and ISO 179-1:2020 for notched Charpy impact, with typical acceptance thresholds of 12 kJ/m² at 23°C and 4 kJ/m² at −30°C; painted or unpainted parts are also checked for heat sag under ISO 75-2:2013 method B. Injection moulding is performed on a 40 mm general-purpose screw with L/D 22:1, melt temperature 240°C to 260°C, mould temperature 60°C to 80°C, injection velocity 80 mm/s to 150 mm/s, and holding pressure 50 MPa to 80 MPa; clamp force is selected between 1,500 kN and 3,000 kN depending on projected area. At injection velocities above 150 mm/s, gate blush and jetting have been observed at the fan gate; if the mould temperature is below 60°C, knit-line depth in B-pillar structures becomes measurable after paint thermal cure. Terminal parts include exterior mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, B-pillar appliqués, and wheel-arch extensions.
Because of the low coefficient of linear thermal expansion and higher resistance to UV embrittlement relative to impact-modified ABS, Centrex® ASA 821 is coextruded as the outer cap layer on heavy-gauge ABS sheet intended for vacuum forming of marine deck hatches and RV exterior panels. The cap layer is maintained at 15% to 25% of total sheet thickness; for a 4.0 mm nominal sheet, this equals 0.6 mm to 1.0 mm of ASA cap, and the corresponding ASA mass fraction in the finished sheet is approximately 5.0 wt% to 9.0 wt% depending on ABS regrind density. The cap compound is run as virgin Centrex® ASA 821 with 2.0 wt% to 4.0 wt% of a UV-stabilised colour concentrate, while reclaimed edge trim and forming scrap are closed-loop recycled into the ABS substrate at not more than 30 wt% to avoid heat-sag deviation in the forming window. Accelerated weathering is verified under ISO 4892-2:2013 and colour retention under ASTM D4674-19; tensile and impact properties are measured by ASTM D638-22 and ASTM D256-23, with the cap layer required to retain at least 70% of original notched Izod impact after 2,500 h xenon exposure. Sheet extrusion uses a vented main extruder with L/D 40:1 for the ABS substrate and a 32:1 coextruder for the ASA cap, melt temperatures of 230°C to 250°C, and a polished roll stack at 70°C to 90°C with adjustable nip to control surface gloss. Thermoforming of the sheet is conducted with an infrared or quartz heating tunnel at a blank surface temperature window of 170°C to 180°C; the permitted tolerance is approximately ±5°C, because sagging below 165°C produces stress whitening at the plug contact and above 185°C produces localised draw blush and thinning beyond 30% in deep pockets. Plug-assisted vacuum forming is performed with a plug temperature of 90°C to 110°C and a mould temperature of 75°C to 85°C, with cycle times of 60 s to 90 s for 4 mm sheet. Terminal products include thermoformed RV sidewall panels, marine deck hatch covers, dock edge profiles, and access covers.
Agricultural machinery panels exposed to direct sunlight in southern regions accumulate radiant exposure above 100 kLy annually, which causes unweathered ABS skins to embrittle and fade before the mechanical life of the steel substructure is reached. The exposed sheet is capped with Centrex® ASA 821 at 20% to 30% of total thickness, or monolithic sheet is produced from an ASA/ABS alloy with 25 wt% to 35 wt% Centrex® ASA 821; colour masterbatch dosing is 2 wt% to 4 wt% for high pigment load but limited to 3 wt% if the sheet must retain original surface gloss. Compliance testing follows ASTM G155-21 cycle 1 and ISO 4892-2:2013, with acceptance criteria of ΔE*ab below 4.0 after 3,000 h and a notched Charpy retention above 60% under ISO 179-1:2020 at 23°C. Heavy-gauge sheet is extruded at 5 mm to 8 mm thickness, cooled, and then thermoformed or compression routed; the high-shear melt delivery is maintained at 225°C to 245°C with a vacuum-vented L/D 36:1 screw to control moisture from filled thermoplastic regrind. CNC trimming of formed panels requires carbide or diamond tooling at spindle speeds 18,000 rpm to 24,000 rpm to prevent burring; holes and snap inserts are added after trimming. If higher filler loadings are required for cost reduction, published data for this specific configuration is limited and accelerated weathering on the full sheet formulation must be validated before series production. Terminal parts include tractor fenders, combine side shields, roof modules, and spray boom covers.
Specifying Centrex ASA 821 as the weatherable fraction in PC/ASA injection moulded enclosures addresses ultraviolet reflectance shift in southern exposure and avoids the lower heat distortion performance of unmodified ASA in solar-loaded cabinets. The compound is built at 40 wt% to 50 wt% Centrex® ASA 821 with the balance a polycarbonate resin of melt volume rate 10 cm³/10 min, and a halogen-free flame-retardant package is added at 10 wt% to 18 wt% where UL 94 V-0 is mandatory for electrical enclosures; a hindered amine light stabiliser masterbatch is introduced at 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt%. The granulate is pre-dried at 90°C for 4 h to below 0.03 wt% moisture before processing. Compliance for outdoor plastics is established through UL 746C, with NEMA 250 Type 4X or IEC 62208:2011 defining the enclosure ingress-performance class, and final parts must comply with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II for cadmium, lead, mercury, and hexavalent chromium. Injection moulding uses a 50 mm screw with L/D 20:1, melt temperature 250°C to 270°C, mould temperature 70°C to 90°C, and a heated sprue bushing above 230°C to avoid PC/ASA delamination at the gate; clamp force ranges from 500 kN to 1,500 kN for enclosures up to 600 mm in width. Processing limitations are significant: prolonged residence time above 270°C leads to yellowing of the PC fraction and reduced UV resistance of the ASA phase, and flame-retardant additives can elevate gate wear, requiring hardened gate inserts. Terminal finished products include outdoor telecommunication housings, solar combiner boxes, and access covers for electrical distribution equipment.
For hydrotherapy spa shells and pool steps, Centrex® ASA 821 is coextruded as the outer layer on ABS substrate sheet where the finished shell must resist both chlorinated water and outdoor UV exposure; cast acrylic offers high surface gloss but lower impact toughness in thin sections, while ABS alone develops yellowing and brittle surface cracks after prolonged immersion. The ASA cap layer is specified at 0.25 mm to 0.50 mm on an ABS substrate of 3.5 mm to 4.5 mm, giving an ASA mass fraction of 5.0 wt% to 10.0 wt% in the formed part. Chemical resistance is tested by ASTM D543-21 using immersion in a 10 ppm free-chlorine aqueous solution at 35°C for 7 days; surface cracking, mass change above 0.5 wt%, or hardness reduction below 80 Shore D under ASTM D2240-21 constitute rejection criteria. The sheet extrusion line uses a vented L/D 36:1 main extruder and a 32:1 cap extruder; ASA melt temperature is held at 220°C to 240°C, and an embossed slip-resistant texture is applied in the roll stack at 70°C to 90°C. Twin-sheet thermoforming is performed with bank temperatures of 170°C to 180°C, a mould temperature of 75°C to 85°C, and a clamp residence of 120 s to 240 s; post-forming trimming uses a five-axis router with carbide tooling to prevent chatter along the sealed perimeter. Finished product types include hydrotherapy spa shells, pool entry step shells, skimmer covers, and filter lids.
