In automotive exterior mirror housing manufacture, Centrex® ASA 811 is processed as an unfilled weatherable shell resin because the high-gloss black surface is expected to survive multi-year solar exposure without a paint clearcoat. The dosing recipe on the line is 100 parts by weight Centrex® ASA 811, 0.8–1.2 parts by weight carbon black masterbatch where a deep black is specified, and 10–20 parts by weight dried in-house regrind from sprues and rejected shells only when the OEM acceptance protocol shows Izod impact retention above 85% relative to virgin material. The material is dried in a closed-loop desiccating dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h to residual moisture below 0.05% by Karl Fischer titration; hopper loading is maintained with dry-air conveying at a dew point below -40 °C. The injection molding line uses a hydraulic clamp sized to 0.5–0.7 kN/cm² projected area, a three-stage screw with 20:1 L/D and 2.5:1 compression ratio, a reverse-taper shutoff nozzle, and a heated sprue bushing. Barrel set points run 230–255 °C from feed throat to nozzle, mold temperature is held at 50–60 °C, and injection speed is limited to 40–60 mm/s to avoid jetting in thin mirror-shell rims. Short shots and gate blush are the main documented defects when melt temperature falls below 230 °C; above 260 °C, gloss fall and black specks appear after 12–15 min barrel residence. Compliance for this segment is evaluated under SAE J2527 xenon-arc exposure for an OEM-defined radiant dose, with 60° gloss measured by ISO 2813 and grey-scale assessment by ISO 105-A02 retained above 4. Tensile elongation at break is recorded per ISO 527-2, and notched Charpy or Izod energy per ISO 179/1eA or ISO 180/A. Terminal product types produced from this route are unpainted outside mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, front grille trim bars, and wiper arm caps.
The extrusion of Centrex® ASA 811 as weatherable capstock over rigid PVC window lineal is a discrete coextrusion application, not an additive modification. The feed ratio is 100 parts by weight Centrex® ASA 811 with 2–4 parts by weight pigment masterbatch and 0–0.3 parts by weight acrylic processing aid; the cap layer is laid down at 0.15–0.25 mm finished thickness over a 1.8–2.5 mm rigid PVC cell. The cap layer therefore represents 7–12% of total wall mass. Because the ASA melt reaches stable flow at 220–245 °C while the PVC substrate degrades above 190–195 °C, two separate extruders are required before the feedblock: a 25:1 L/D single-screw extruder with barrier mixing elements for the ASA cap, and a parallel twin-screw extruder with vacuum venting for the PVC. Melt joining occurs only in the final feedblock and die land, where land temperature is held at 190–200 °C; the ASA cap is processed at the upper end of its range and the PVC is processed at the lower end of its range. If this differential is not controlled, melt-bank instability creates shark-skin streaks in the cap layer at line speeds above 3 m/min, and cap thickness dissymmetry exceeds ±0.02 mm. Downstream calibration applies 0.18–0.25 MPa vacuum through dry calibration sleeves with 16–18 °C water; post-calibration annealing is avoided because ASA gloss loss occurs above 70 °C in the hot stack. Compliance testing includes EN 12608-1 for PVC profile tolerances, ASTM D4726 for rigid PVC siding dimensions, ASTM D3679 for outdoor vinyl siding performance, EN 513 for artificial weathering of unplasticized PVC profiles, and ISO 4892-2 method A for capstock color retention. Terminal product types are exterior window lineals, cladding panels, board-and-batten siding, fence pickets, and deck railing cover caps.
Where salt-laden air, bilge cleaner overspray, and reflected UV from gelcoat surfaces are simultaneous, Centrex® ASA 811 is molded into marine deck hardware rather than painted ABS because the acrylic ester rubber phase reduces the blush and chalking seen in standard ABS after 1000 h of ISO 9227 neutral salt spray. The formulation is 100 parts by weight Centrex® ASA 811; no talc or calcium carbonate filler is used because filler increases salt-spray pitting at weld lines, and the only additive is 0.5–1.0 parts by weight hindered phenolic antioxidant in hot-runner lines with residence time above 8 min. The parts are injection-molded with melt temperature 235–250 °C, mold temperature 45–55 °C, and wall thickness 3–4 mm to maintain stiffness in male snap-fit bosses. Gate placement is moved to avoid visible knit lines across the top face; notched impact at a knit line can fall 20–30% relative to a non-knit flow front when a single tunnel gate is used. Validation references ISO 527-2 tensile elongation after salt spray, ISO 180/A notched impact at 23 °C and -10 °C, ISO 2813 gloss after ASTM G155 cycle 1 exposure, and ISO 4892-3 for wet-phase UV. Terminal products are deck hatch frames, portlight trim rings, radar mast brackets, instrument pod covers, and swim-platform edge extrusions.

A UL 746C f1 outdoor suitability submission for a Centrex® ASA 811 cabinet cover is limited to enclosures where UL 94 HB is acceptable and the structural load is carried by a metal or glass-filled polymer inner frame. The resin is injection-molded at 100 parts by weight with no reinforcing fiber; when static dissipative performance is required, 0.5–1.0 parts by weight antistatic masterbatch is added, but surface resistivity below 10^12 Ω per IEC 60093 is not stable below 35% relative humidity. The process uses melt temperature 245–260 °C, mold temperature 60–70 °C, and valve-gated hot runners for shot mass above 1.2 kg; the mold is dry-cycle heated to avoid condensation on tool steel in coastal plants. The final enclosure cover must pass IEC 60529 IP55 or IP65 water-jet tests after assembly, but the polymer itself is not the sealing element because its creep modulus at 60 °C under a compression gasket is not sufficient for sustained seal retention. Terminal products are outdoor WiFi housing radomes, HVAC condenser grille frames, pump controller covers, and telecom cable joint shells. For flame-retarded enclosures requiring V-0 at 1.5 mm, this grade is not specified; a flame-retarded ASA/PC or PVC grade should be selected.
During manufacture of RV exterior corner caps and baggage door frames, low-temperature impact after road-gravel damage is a more decisive criterion than UV resistance alone. The formulation in this segment is 100 parts by weight Centrex® ASA 811, 1–2 parts by weight white titanium dioxide masterbatch for high-altitude reflectivity, and 15–25 parts by weight clean regrind where the granulate is dried to 0.04% moisture and screened through a 3 mm mesh to remove fines. The parts are injection-molded at 240–255 °C melt temperature, 50–60 °C mold temperature, and 3.0–3.5 mm nominal wall. Because the corner cap has a deep draw of 2:1 and a visible gloss surface, the tool is filled through two edge gates rather than one center gate; the resulting twin knit line is placed behind the mounting flange. Sink marks opposite bosses are controlled by keeping boss wall thickness at 40% of adjacent nominal wall and by using gas counterpressure only if the tool includes a 0.8 mm vented insert. Low-temperature validation uses ISO 179/1eU Charpy impact at -20 °C, while long-term field simulation uses SAE J2527 xenon arc with 60° gloss retention per ISO 2813. The terminal products are exterior corner caps, baggage door frames, LP-gas compartment trim rings, and upper beltline moldings.
Sheet extrusion for agricultural machinery cab roofs begins with Centrex® ASA 811 at 100 parts by weight, 1–3 parts by weight pigment masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 parts by weight hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch; dark colors are held below 2% total addition because part surface temperatures above 65 °C reduce low-temperature impact under solar load. The sheet line uses a 90 mm single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D, a melt pump, and a three-roll polishing stack at 75–85 °C, producing sheet of 3–6 mm thickness. The sheet is then vacuum-formed on aluminum tools at 160–180 °C surface temperature; edge radii are held above 4 mm to prevent stress concentration. Part testing follows ISO 6603-2 multiaxial impact at -20 °C, ISO 527-2 tensile elongation after 2,000 h ISO 4892-2 xenon arc exposure, ISO 178 flexural modulus at 23 °C, and ISO 175 diesel fuel immersion for 72 h with mass change below 1.0%. Terminal products are tractor cab roofs, fender extensions, combine side cowlings, and baler body top covers.
