Application of Hangzhou Jufeng ABS CA-7200

Injection-compression moulding of lower B-pillar trim from Hangzhou Jufeng CA-7200 is specified with cavity pressure held between 350 bar and 500 bar during the packing phase, a band that supplies enough force to replicate grain depths of 20–30 µm without excessive flash development at the shear edges. The resin is pre-dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of −40 °C for 2–4 h at 80 °C, reducing residual moisture to 0.05 wt% or lower before plastication. A general-purpose injection screw with 20:1–22:1 L/D and compression ratio of 2.2:1–2.6:1 is used for this unfilled ABS; back pressure is set at 3–7 bar to homogenize melt temperature without creating excessive shear heating. Gates for a door panel substrate with projected area of 1 100–1 400 cm² are located in the lower rocker transition to push weld lines below the beltline sight plane. Clamp force is calculated at 450–700 t on the basis of the same cavity pressure band, not as a nominal machine class. Dimensional acceptance is referenced to ISO 294-4:2018 for moulding shrinkage and ISO 291:2008 for conditioning before metrology; for lot release, ISO 180:2023 notched Izod at 23 °C on 4 mm bars is used as the control test, while ISO 527-2:2012 tensile modulus and ISO 178:2019 flexural modulus are retained for engineering change verification. Published data for CA-7200 in this exact automotive trim configuration are limited; where interior release specifications invoke VDA 270 B3 and ISO 6452:2007, qualification should be performed on the production mould rather than inferred from raw resin data. When mould temperature falls below 40 °C, grained A-surfaces lose depth on the crown of the B-pillar; above 70 °C, ejection causes surface drag and elongates the grain. The practical processing window for this substrate is therefore 45–60 °C on the moving side and 35–45 °C on the fixed side.

Where Does Shrinkage Anisotropy Constrain Gateway-Router Enclosure Dimensions?

For injection-moulded gateway-router outer covers, the dominant dimensional failure mode is not total shrinkage but the difference between flow-parallel and transverse shrinkage after uncontrolled post-mould cooling. Moulding shrinkage values measured under ISO 294-4:2018 on 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaques from unfilled ABS generally occupy a 0.4 %–0.7 % band, with anisotropy of 0.1–0.2 percentage points between flow and transverse axes. This small difference becomes visible as corner lift and sidewall bow across a 180–220 mm housing footprint when wall thickness varies by more than 0.15 mm. CA-7200 is processed through a barrel profile from 210 °C in the rear zone to 240 °C at the nozzle, with mould temperatures held at 40–55 °C; hold pressure is typically 500–700 bar and hold time is set 2–3 s beyond gate freeze estimated by ultrasonic or pressure-curve observation. Hot-runner valve gates of 1.0–1.5 mm diameter are preferred over cold sprues to delay gate freeze and permit continued packing into the sidewalls. Screw bosses are designed with a minimum outside diameter of 2.5 × the screw nominal diameter and a wall-thickness reduction of 40 % or less; stress cracking in early production samples was observed at boss roots where the local wall exceeded 3.0 mm and created a sink-mark-driven notch. The relevant enclosure safety verification is IEC 62368-1:2023, and surface flame performance is tested under UL 94 at the minimum wall thickness of the finished cover; many unfilled ABS formulations achieve an HB rating at 1.5 mm, but each CA-7200 lot must be retested because pigmentation and processing reclaim shift burning behaviour. A normative test map is provided in Table 1.

When CA-7200 is extruded into calendered sheet for vacuum-formed refrigerator door liners and domestic appliance trim, the production line operates with a single-screw extruder having 30:1–36:1 L/D, barrier flight sections, and a breaker plate carrying 60/100/60 mesh screens to trap gels and particulates before the flat die. The die temperature is maintained between 220 °C and 250 °C; below 220 °C, unmelts from the screen pack cause surface pimples on the sheet, while above 250 °C, monomer degradation produces yellow streaks that are most visible on white and pastel colours. The extrudate is calendered on a three-roll stack with roll temperatures of 70–90 °C for the middle roll and 80–100 °C for the bottom roll, depending on sheet gauge; roll-gap control of ±0.02 mm is necessary to hold thermoforming gauge variation below 0.15 mm. For refrigerator liners, minimum corner draw ratios of 1.5:1 to 2.0:1 require sheet surface temperatures of 150–180 °C; plug-assisted forming with synthetic polyamide plugs heated to 90–110 °C reduces corner thinning below the 1.0 mm threshold that triggers stress-whitening in ABS. Post-formed liner sides are subjected to environmental stress-cracking screening under ISO 22088-2 using a vegetable-oil or household-cleaner contact agent, because edge-stressed areas in deep-drawn corners are most susceptible to chain scission. If CA-7200-specific data under refrigerator-liner draw ratios are not publicly documented, the production thermoforming line should use trial-sheet lot qualification rather than extrapolating from flat-sheet tensile properties. The same sheet extrusion line can produce hair-map or fine-grain surface embossing by vertical embossing roll pressure of 20–40 N/mm², with grain depth retained only when melt temperature and roll temperature overlap within 10 °C of the sheet core temperature.

When Solvent-Welded Drainage Fittings Require Impact Verification Below 0 °C

Injection-moulded DWV sockets, wyes, and trap bodies produced from CA-7200 are qualified to ASTM D2661-21 for ABS drain, waste, and vent pipe and fittings, with joint dimensional verification conducted to ASTM D3311-20. The solvent-cementing operation introduces a process conflict that is not present in dry-fitted assemblies: methyl ethyl ketone-based cements swell the ABS surface and relax frozen-in stress, so a fitting that appears dimensionally stable before joining can develop microcracks at the socket transition after 24 h cure if the moulded-in stress was not controlled. To limit this failure mode, socket transitions are moulded with a radius of 0.8–1.5 mm and 1°–2° draft on the socket interior, and the moving half temperature is held at 50–60 °C to reduce surface-layer orientation. Pre-drying of CA-7200 to 0.1 wt% moisture or lower is mandatory; residual moisture at 0.2 wt% generates splay and internal porosity on sealing faces that cannot be recovered by downstream drying. Impact performance is screened according to ISO 3127 at 0 °C using a falling weight conditioned for the fitting size; fittings used in unheated spaces are additionally tested at −10 °C for crack growth beyond 10 % of the socket circumference. If published low-temperature data for CA-7200 are unavailable, the ISO 3127 pass-fail test on the production fitting remains the controlling specification. A practical lot-release check is acetone immersion exposure for 15 min on a representative socket followed by inspection under 10× magnification; any visible crack at the gate or weld line requires reject of the moulding lot.

For high-gloss bezels and cosmetic housings in personal audio products, CA-7200 is moulded in hot-runner tools with valve gates of 0.8–1.2 mm and polished cavity surfaces of SPI A-2 finish or finer. The melt temperature is capped at 240 °C to prevent surface degradation that reads as hazing on bright colours; mould surface temperature is set at 60–70 °C on the gloss side. Surface defects from gas traps are controlled by cascading gate sequencing and local vent inserts of 0.01–0.02 mm depth. For toys and childcare articles, the material is tested under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of certain elements and under ASTM F963-17 for soluble heavy metals in accessible substrate; CA-7200-specific certificates are required from the compounder before colour masterbatch approval because pigments often dominate migration results. Under REACH, SVHC content in the raw resin and in the final article is verified against the latest candidate list, and RoHS compliance is assessed by EPA 3052 or equivalent digestion with ICP-MS screening for cadmium and lead. The mechanical durability of clips and snap-fit features is evaluated by repeated insertion force measurements on tensile testers fitted with 50 N load cells, but the controlling standard remains ISO 527-2:2012 for material-level comparisons. Wall stock below 1.2 mm in snap-fit retaining arms reduces permissible insertion force by 20 %–30 % due to notch sensitivity of unfilled ABS; this boundary is obtained from production moulding trials rather than raw resin data.

Thermoformed Luggage Shell Grain Retention and Drop-Weight Impact at Hinge Mount

Luggage shells produced from CA-7200 sheet are thermoformed at sheet-surface temperatures of 155–180 °C; the lower limit is defined by loss of grain transfer at deep corner radii, while the upper limit is set by sheet sag and surface oxidation that create local thickness variation above 0.3 mm. The shell is formed on aluminium tooling with vacuum holes of 0.5–0.8 mm diameter, spaced at 20–25 mm intervals in high-stretch zones; at draw ratios above 1.8:1, local sheet thickness falls to 1.2–1.5 mm from a nominal 2.5–3.0 mm starting gauge. Impact testing at the hinge mount is conducted under ISO 6603-2:2023 using a 20 mm diameter striker at 1.0 m/s to 4.4 m/s, with specimens conditioned at −10 °C for cold-climate verification; the failure mode is recorded as ductile or brittle because ABS exhibits a sharp transition near 0 °C that cannot be inferred from room-temperature Izod alone. Fastener torque at the hinge plate is limited to 2.5–3.5 N·m for M4 screws in 2.5 mm thermoformed stock; exceeding 4.0 N·m initiates radial crazing around the boss holes after 100 h of static load. CA-7200-specific published penetration energy data are limited; therefore the shell moulder should generate a minimum of 20 formed parts per cavity for impact lot validation before accepting a new sheet extrusion batch. The grained surface is stabilized by maintaining forming pressure of 0.8–1.0 bar against the cavity during cooling until the sheet temperature drops below 90 °C; premature demoulding above 95 °C causes grain washout and warp at the handle well.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Material grade CA-7200 from Hangzhou Jufeng is a pelletized acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer intended for injection-molded components. Because the trade designation does not expose a full ISO 2580-1:2002 data block, and published data for this specific configuration is limited, the grade cannot be reliably equated to general-purpose ABS solely by name. Incoming inspection should therefore use the following standard method set: ISO 1133-1:2011 for melt mass-flow rate, ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile properties, ISO 178:2010 for flexural modulus, ISO 180:2019 for notched Izod impact, ISO 306:2013 for Vicat softening temperature, and ISO 1183-1:2019 for density. The values listed in the manufacturer batch certificate, rather than trade literature, constitute the only valid release specification for CA-7200.

Which Specification Set Governs Incoming Inspection of CA-7200?

Because CA-7200 is a commercial trade name rather than a fully declared ISO 2580-1:2002 specification grade, incoming inspection should be built as a certificate-of-analysis comparison program. The laboratory checks are intended to detect lot drift and contamination, not to establish design allowables. A release test matrix applicable to neat ABS is given below. Quantitative limits must be taken from the current Hangzhou Jufeng certificate of analysis; where no public limit exists, the material should remain in quarantine until a batch-specific value is available.

    Property Reference standard Acceptance criterion
Melt mass-flow rate ISO 1133-1:2011 Report value; compare to current batch certificate; deviations greater than ±10% trigger quarantine and process review.

Flexural modulus ISO 178:2010 Compare to certificate of analysis; report specimen side and span setting.
Notched Izod impact strength ISO 180:2019 Condition molded specimens at 23 °C and 50% RH; compare to certificate of analysis.

Density ISO 1183-1:2019 Compare to certificate of analysis; confirm filler or flame-retardant loading is not present unless specified.
Ash content ISO 3451-1:2019 Confirm absence of fillers, glass fibre, or mineral modifiers unless explicitly stated for the CA-7200 lot.
Specimen preparation ISO 294-1:2017 Mold at a controlled melt and mold temperature; record exact machine settings for batch comparability.

    Drying and Pre-Processing Requirements

Moisture in CA-7200 is the first critical control. At relative humidity above 60%, ABS pellets stored in open containers can take up sufficient water to produce visible surface defects after plasticization. The usual threshold for injection-molded ABS surfaces is 0.10 wt% residual moisture; above this value, splay, silver streaks, and reduced weld-line strength are observed in production parts. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40 °C or lower is recommended. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h is the conventional starting condition for neat ABS injection grades. At relative humidity above 60%, drying time should be extended to 4–6 h and the pellet bed height should not exceed the dryer manufacturer’s rated capacity.

Residual moisture should be verified before release to the press by Karl Fischer titration or by calibrated loss-on-drying instrumentation. Dried material should not remain in an unheated hopper for prolonged periods; transfer lines should be closed and supplied with dry air where practical. Drying temperatures above 100 °C are not advisable for ABS because oxidative yellowing of the polybutadiene phase and bead agglomeration can occur. If hopper loading occurs in a plant where relative humidity exceeds 60%, pre-drying should be treated as mandatory, not optional.

When CA-7200 Is Run on Injection Molding Lines with Short Screws

High-flow ABS grades impose a tension between fast cycle time and melt homogeneity. On injection machines with screw length-to-diameter ratios below 18:1, plasticating may be incomplete, particularly at increased screw speed. For ABS, a general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 is normally employed. Barrel temperature profiles for neat ABS injection grades reported in polymer processing literature typically begin at 180–200 °C in the rear zone, 210–230 °C in the compression zone, and 230–240 °C at the nozzle. The upper processing limit of 250 °C should be treated as a hard stop for ABS: polybutadiene degradation at or above this temperature produces yellowing, volatile release, and irreversible loss of notched impact strength. Because the CA-7200 melt-viscosity curve is not publicly available, the barrel profile must be adjusted using the supplier’s recommended melt temperature and the actual fill pressure observed at the press.

Mold temperature is controlled between 40 °C and 80 °C. Lower mold temperature reduces cycle time but increases internal stress and lowers surface gloss; higher mold temperature improves replication of texture and weld-line strength but increases cooling time. For thin-wall sections below 1 mm, mold temperature should be biased toward 60–80 °C, and melt temperature should be held near the upper quadrant of the supplier window. For thick sections above 4 mm, the mold surface should be run cooler and the holding pressure should be profiled to prevent sink marks and voids. Injection speed should be moderate; excessive speed may cause jetting, gate blush, and shear heating. Holding pressure is normally 50–80% of peak injection pressure, but the exact value must be established by short-shot studies on the production mold.

Because the shear viscosity of ABS is pseudoplastic, mold-filling simulation requires a Cross-WLF or Bird-Carreau fit from capillary rheometry. Published CA-7200 viscosity curves are not currently available, so simulation with a generic ABS dataset may produce incorrect fill-pressure predictions. Conservative mold-filling validation should begin with a short-shot progression at three melt temperatures and three injection velocities. The fill-only phase should be evaluated at 30–50% of the total shot weight to avoid packing effects masking the flow front.

Mold shrinkage for ordinary ABS is reported in the range 0.4–0.7%; CA-7200 may deviate due to flow direction, wall thickness, and pigment masterbatch. Dimensional acceptance should use ISO 294-4:2018 or ASTM D955-21, not manufacturer nominal shrinkage alone. Reground CA-7200 should be used only after validation; repeated heat history degrades impact resistance before tensile properties, and the regrind fraction should be kept constant to avoid batch-to-batch processing drift. Vent depths of 0.02–0.03 mm on the parting line are used to prevent burn marks at the end of fill.

CA-7200 is typically considered for opaque injection-molded parts in appliance trim, vacuum-cleaner housings, office machine covers, small electrical enclosures, and non-airbag automotive interior panels. It is not inherently flame-retardant; UL 94 V-0, 5VA, or glow-wire compliance per IEC 60695-2-11 must be confirmed by a certification document for the specific grade and wall thickness. Food-contact status cannot be assigned from ABS generic data; migration testing under EU Regulation 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 180.22 would be required. Outdoor use is constrained by the oxidative UV sensitivity of the polybutadiene phase; unpainted parts will yellow unless a UV-stabilized variant or coating is used.

How Does CA-7200 Differ from Flame-Retardant, High-Heat, and Transparent ABS Grades?

Compared with general-purpose ABS, CA-7200 is expected to have a melt-flow orientation; however, no public multi-lot comparison exists. If the grade is high-flow, the trade-off is typically a lower molecular weight and reduced notched Izod impact relative to medium-impact extrusion ABS. Design stresses should therefore be revalidated on CA-7200 test plaques rather than transferred from another ABS grade.

Against flame-retardant ABS, neat CA-7200 is lower in density. Unfilled ABS typically spans 1.04–1.07 g/cm³, while brominated flame-retardant ABS often exceeds 1.15 g/cm³ due to flame-retardant and antimony synergist loading. The difference matters in part weight and in electrical enclosures requiring UL 94 V-0; CA-7200 must not be substituted for a flame-retardant-listed grade without a valid yellow card.

Compared with high-heat ABS based on α-methylstyrene, CA-7200 is expected to exhibit a lower Vicat softening temperature. Standard ABS Vicat B50 values typically lie near 95–105 °C, whereas high-heat ABS grades can reach 115–130 °C; the CA-7200 value must be read from the certificate of analysis. This difference defines suitability for painted parts exposed to 120 °C bake cycles.

Compared with transparent ABS or MABS, CA-7200 is opaque and unsuitable for light-transmitting lenses or clear covers. Transparent grades require refractive-index and haze control not relevant to an opaque injection-molding ABS.

Compared with PC/ABS blends, CA-7200 has a lower density-to-cost balance and lower low-temperature ductility. PC/ABS density is commonly 1.12–1.20 g/cm³, and its low-temperature impact is superior. CA-7200 should not be used in applications requiring PC/ABS-level energy management at -40 °C without instrumented impact validation per ISO 6603-2.

Regulatory certification for CA-7200 requires a grade-specific supplier statement. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II restrictions apply to lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE, and four phthalates; REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 imposes SVHC communication and potential restriction obligations. These are not resin-level constants, and a change in pigment masterbatch or processing aid can alter the final article compliance. Incoming lots should be screened by XRF per ASTM F2617-15 if supplier documentation is unavailable. If CA-7200 is colored or compounded at the molding site, the final product must be re-evaluated against Article 33 and Annex II obligations. Because published data for this specific configuration is limited, end users should not replace design validation with generic ABS property ranges.
