In moulding of low-gloss passenger-cabin trim components from ABS PP-R003 AM, the recommended dry-blend formulation is 100 phr ABS PP-R003 AM, 2.0–3.5 phr automotive-grade colour masterbatch, 0.2–0.6 phr processing aid, and not more than 20 phr cleaned in-house regrind generated from the same part family. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h is mandatory when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %; residual moisture above 0.1 wt% produces splay and weld-line porosity. Injection moulding is executed on reciprocating-screw machines with 20:1–25:1 L/D, shot capacity 50–70 % of barrel volume, melt temperature 230–250 °C, and mould temperature 50–70 °C. Filling velocity is set from 80 mm/s to 150 mm/s, with packing pressure 55–70 MPa for 1.8–2.5 s and cooling time 18–30 s depending on wall thickness. Low-gloss surfaces are generated by grained cavities, but mould temperatures below 50 °C reduce weld-line strength and increase visible knit lines; mould release agents are excluded to maintain later in-mould labelling or infrared welding. Compliance for cabin trim requires burn rate below 100 mm/min when tested to ISO 3795:1989 or FMVSS 302, volatile organic compound limits measured by VDA 278:2011, and mechanical property verification under ISO 527-2 and ISO 178. Terminal components produced on production-scale lines under this window include door trim panels, glove box shells, lower instrument panel covers, seat side shields, and B-pillar lower covers. Operational boundary: regrind fractions above 20 phr shift melt flow length and increase gloss, while barrel residence times above 6 min at 250 °C produce yellowing in unpigmented grades.
The acid-copper plating line imposes a selective oxidative attack on the butadiene-rich domains in ABS. For electroplating-grade ABS PP-R003 AM, the formulation is maintained at 100 phr virgin pellet with not more than 10 phr processed regrind; the regrind is screened for particle size and dried to 0.05 wt% moisture or lower to prevent pre-etch swelling. Mould release agents, especially silicone-containing grades, are excluded because residual release film causes etch voids and plate skip. Injection moulding uses melt temperature 230–245 °C, mould temperature 60–80 °C, and gate land length 0.5–0.8 mm to minimize molecular orientation at the surface. After moulding, parts pass through chromic acid/sulphuric acid etching at 60–68 °C for 5–10 min, followed by neutralization, palladium-tin activation, electroless nickel deposition, acid copper of 15–25 µm, a semi-bright nickel layer of 8–12 µm, and a chromium top coat of 0.2–0.5 µm. Adhesion is verified by thermal cycling between −30 °C and 80 °C per ASTM B604-91(2020) and by CASS exposure conducted to ISO 9227:2022 for 24–48 h. Terminal finished products include radiator grille surrounds, liftgate trim appliqués, door handle bezels, and badging. A process conflict occurs when gate blush and shear-induced surface orientation exceed the etch sensitivity window: excessive injection velocity above 150 mm/s through undersized gates can produce a surface layer that is not uniformly removed in etching, causing peel failure at the ABS-metal interface.
High-volume white goods production using ABS PP-R003 AM for washing machine top covers and air-conditioner front panels operates on clamping-force machines from 500 t to 1300 t with hot-runner valve gates and polished cavities. The formulation is typically 100 phr ABS PP-R003 AM, 2.5–4.0 phr white masterbatch with high-opacity titanium dioxide, 0.4–0.8 phr processing aid, and up to 20 phr plant-generated regrind. Drying is performed at 80 °C for 3 h to less than 0.1 wt% moisture. Melt temperature is held between 220 °C and 240 °C, mould temperature between 50 °C and 70 °C, fill time 1.0–2.5 s, packing pressure 55–70 MPa, and total cycle time 45–70 s for 2.2–3.0 mm wall stock. Safety certification for appliances requires glow-wire flammability at 650 °C tested according to IEC 60695-2-11, compliance with IEC 60335-1:2020 for household and similar electrical appliances, and restricted substance management under 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Terminal part types include washing machine control panel frames, top covers, air-conditioner front panels, refrigerator door end caps, and vacuum cleaner housings. The material is not intended for direct food-contact surfaces or for continuous service above 75 °C under mechanical load without heat-aging validation.
At wall thickness below 1.5 mm, the melt front in ABS PP-R003 AM requires a fast injection profile and a controlled packing phase to avoid short shots and sink marks. The compound is prepared at 100 phr ABS PP-R003 AM, 2.0–3.0 phr colour masterbatch, 0.5–1.5 phr antistatic masterbatch yielding surface resistivity of 10⁹–10¹¹ Ω per IEC 61340-5-1, and not more than 15 phr in-house regrind. Drying in a desiccant dryer at 80–85 °C for 4 h to below 0.08 wt% moisture is required before moulding. Injection moulding uses accumulator-assisted machines with 20:1–22:1 L/D barrels, melt temperature 230–250 °C, mould temperature 60–80 °C, injection velocity 200–350 mm/s, and gate diameters 0.8–1.2 mm. For a 1.2 mm nominal wall section, a flow-length-to-thickness ratio around 120:1 is typically achievable with a melt temperature of 245 °C and injection velocity of 300 mm/s; below 1.0 mm, the packing pressure decays before gate freeze and the process window narrows to ≤5 °C melt variation. compliance for electronics enclosures requires RoHS-restricted substance screening by IEC 62321-3-1:2013, flammability classification of UL 94 at 1.5 mm thickness, and marking according to ISO 11469. Terminal finished components include router housings, monitor bezels, keyboard frames, mouse top shells, and telecom terminal covers. Operational limit: barrel residence time above 6 min at 250 °C causes yellowing and a drop in notched impact strength of more than 10 % when measured by ISO 179-1/1eA. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and tool-specific rheological verification is required.
Sheet extrusion for hard-shell luggage from ABS PP-R003 AM uses a single-screw extruder with 30:1–36:1 L/D and a barrier screw feeding a 1200–1800 mm sheet die with choker bar adjustment. The formulation is 100 phr ABS PP-R003 AM, 3.0–6.0 phr colour and UV-stabilized masterbatch, 0.5–1.0 phr processing aid, and up to 25 phr clean skeletal regrind from thermoforming. Pellets are dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h to below 0.1 wt% moisture. Extrusion melt temperature is maintained at 200–220 °C, and the three-roll polishing stack is controlled between 85 °C and 100 °C to produce sheet of 2.0–3.5 mm thickness with uniform caliper. Thermoforming is performed at sheet surface temperatures of 160–180 °C with plug assist; draw ratios above 2.5:1 require increasing bottom corner radii to maintain corner thickness. Mechanical acceptance is verified by ISO 527-2 tensile yield, ISO 178 flexural modulus, and ISO 6603-2 puncture impact at −10 °C for cold-climate transport. UV stabilization is evaluated by ISO 4892-2 Xenon arc weathering. Terminal products include hard-shell luggage, tool cases, drone transport cases, and equipment briefcases. Moisture above 0.1 wt% in the feed produces pinholes in the sheet; regrind above 25 phr reduces melt strength and narrows the thermoforming window.
Before qualifying ABS PP-R003 AM for non-implantable medical device enclosures, the moulder establishes a clean-room procedure under ISO 14644-1 Class 8 or better, with filtered air, dedicated material handling, and documented cleaning. The formulation is restricted to 100 phr virgin ABS PP-R003 AM and 1.0–2.0 phr clean-room-compliant colour masterbatch; regrind is excluded for patient-adjacent enclosures, and internal lubricants are selected only after ink-adhesion and ultrasonic-welding validation. Pre-drying is performed at 80–85 °C for 4 h to below 0.08 wt% moisture. Injection moulding uses melt temperature 220–240 °C, mould temperature 50–70 °C, packing pressure 50–65 MPa, and documented cycle parameters for installation qualification and operational qualification. Biological evaluation follows ISO 10993-1:2018 for surface-contact devices; when the enclosure is located in patient vicinity, surface-contact testing per ISO 10993-5 and ISO 10993-10 is performed. Quality management for medical device manufacturing is conducted under ISO 13485:2016, and electrical safety of the finished equipment is managed under IEC 60601-1:2005/AMD1:2012. Terminal component types include ultrasound cart housings, patient monitor enclosures, infusion pump covers, and laboratory instrument panels. Sterilization compatibility includes ethylene oxide with post-cycle aeration; gamma exposure above 25 kGy accelerates yellowing and reduces impact properties, and validation of post-sterilization mechanical integrity is required before release.

Guangzhou Kingfa Science & Technology Co., Ltd. supplies ABS PP-R003 AM as an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-molding compound supplied in pellet form. The grade designation ABS PP-R003 AM is part of the supplier’s nomenclature and should be read only with the current manufacturer datasheet; the AM suffix is not a generic polymer family code. In the compounded material, a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase carries a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase stabilized against thermo-oxidative chain scission. The product is processed on reciprocating-screw injection molding machines with a minimum 20:1 L/D ratio and a check-ring non-return valve. Standardized test plaques are prepared according to ISO 294-1:2017 after drying to <0.05 wt% moisture; conditioning of test specimens follows ISO 3915:2022. Because the polybutadiene phase takes up atmospheric moisture, ambient storage at 23°C and 50% RH can raise surface moisture to 0.2–0.4 wt% within 24 h. Moisture above 0.05 wt% at the feed throat produces silver streaks, surface splay, and a measurable reduction in notched impact measured by ISO 179-1:2010. This technical introduction should be treated as a processing-window summary; the production lot certificate of analysis governs release values.
Drying is limited by pellet agglomeration and by oxidation of the polybutadiene phase at elevated temperature, not by the thermal stability of the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix alone. In closed-loop desiccant-wheel dryers with a supply-air dew point of -30°C or lower, a charge temperature of 80°C ± 5°C for 2–4 h reduces moisture to <0.05 wt% when measured by ISO 15512:2019. At relative humidity above 60%, drying should be extended toward the upper limit, and pellets should be conveyed in dry-air lines rather than exposed to ambient air at the vacuum receiver. Drying above 95°C can produce pellet-to-pellet sticking and yellowing of the stabilizer package; this is detected as an upward shift in melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022. Desiccant-bed condition is monitored at the hopper outlet with a dew-point meter, because a plain hot-air hopper dryer cannot maintain the required dew point in humid production rooms. Regrind dried under the same profile is acceptable only up to 25 wt%; the lower bulk density of regrind requires a larger dryer hopper volume per kilogram of output to avoid uneven residence-time distribution.
On production-scale injection presses of 120 to 180 tons clamp force, melt temperature measured with a needle probe should be held between 210°C and 250°C; the front zone is typically set at 235°C and the nozzle at 240°C. Mold-wall temperature is maintained at 40°C to 80°C. Higher mold temperatures improve weld-line integrity measured on ISO 179-1:2010 specimens and reduce flow marks, while lower mold temperatures shorten cycle time but reduce surface gloss. Back pressure is set at 0.5 to 1.0 MPa to homogenize the melt without excessive shear heating. Screw retraction speed should allow recovery during 70–85% of the cooling time, and shot size should occupy 45–75% of barrel capacity. At melt temperatures above 260°C, residence time should remain below 2 min; extended hold times above 250°C degrade the polybutadiene phase and reduce elongation at break measured according to ISO 527-2:2012. Silicone-free mold lubricants are preferred for release; amine-containing release agents may interact with stabilizers in the rubber phase and require validation.
The typical property envelope extracted from supplier-published technical data for ABS PP-R003 AM is given in Table 1. The ranges are not a batch release specification; the production lot certificate should be consulted for exact values.

Distinction from other ABS classes is observed principally in the balance between melt volume-flow rate and low-speed impact. Table 2 compares ABS PP-R003 AM with three adjacent material classes. The values are class-typical and are not a replacement for current datasheets.
| Material class | Melt volume-flow rate | Notched Izod, 23°C | HDT, 1.80 MPa | Processing distinction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ABS PP-R003 AM | 18–24 cm³/10 min | 16–22 kJ/m² | 88–94°C | Pre-dry at 80°C to <0.05 wt% moisture; mold 40–80°C |
| General-purpose high-flow ABS | 28–35 cm³/10 min | 12–15 kJ/m² | 82–86°C | Lower melt temperature, shorter packing phase |
| ABS/PC blend | 10–15 cm³/10 min | 40–50 kJ/m² | 104–110°C | Mold temperature above 80°C needed |
| Mineral-filled ABS | 15–20 cm³/10 min | 6–8 kJ/m² | 90–95°C | Higher flexural modulus, screw/barrel abrasion |
In tools with long flow lengths and thin ribs, the melt volume-flow rate of 18–24 cm³/10 min gives adequate filling of a 1.5 mm wall over a flow length of 120 mm at 230°C under 80 MPa injection pressure. For flow lengths beyond 150 mm, a high-flow ABS with 28–35 cm³/10 min is usually required; substitution in such tools risks short shots or requires increasing melt temperature, which accelerates degradation. Against ABS/PC blends, ABS PP-R003 AM exhibits lower HDT and lower low-temperature impact but permits mold temperatures of 60°C instead of above 80°C. Mineral-filled ABS generally provides flexural modulus above 2500 MPa; PP-R003 AM should not be substituted where that stiffness is a design requirement. The unfilled product also differs from ignition-resistant ABS grades; flame-retardant certification such as UL 94 is grade-specific and does not transfer to this material.
For thin-wall enclosures with nominal wall thickness below 2.0 mm, mold filling is controlled by the solidification rate at the advancing melt front. Molders processing ABS PP-R003 AM on 120-ton to 180-ton hydraulic machines with 18–22 mm diameter reciprocating screws use mold temperatures of 60°C to 70°C to reduce visible weld lines. Weld-line strength of 8–10 kJ/m² measured on ISO 179-1:2010 specimens is attainable when melt temperature is held at 230°C and hold pressure at 60 to 80 MPa. Clamp force for a 200 mm × 100 mm × 2 mm plaque is calculated from a cavity pressure of 35–45 MPa. Draft angles of 0.5° to 1° are necessary for release; below 0.5° the cooled part can adhere to the core. Mold shrinkage is 0.4–0.7% when measured according to ISO 294-4:2018, and the actual value depends on gate geometry, hold pressure, and wall thickness.
Regrind use alters lot-to-lot rheology. A clean regrind fraction up to 25 wt% from sprues and runners is permitted only when the regrind is dried to <0.05 wt% moisture and the virgin resin lot has a melt volume-flow rate near the upper end of the stated envelope. At higher regrind fractions, injection pressure should be reduced by 5–10% to prevent flash because polybutadiene-phase chain scission can reduce viscosity. Fines passing a 4 mm screen reduce bulk density and create feed-throat instability. Metal inserts inserted at 100°C to 140°C reduce cracking around the insert. For regulatory submissions, the supplier should provide a REACH Article 33 declaration and RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II screening for the specific lot; material declarations do not transfer across grades. The product is stored in sealed 25-kg bags or octabins with an inner PE liner at 5°C to 35°C and 40–60% RH. Under these conditions, re-testing by ISO 1133-1:2022 and ISO 180:2000 is recommended after 24 months from the certificate date before production use.
