For Guangzhou Keyuan New Material GFRPC/ABS-10, the first downstream segment that imposes measurable mechanical limits is thin-wall automotive door module carriers and instrument panel retainers. In thin-wall automotive door module carriers, substitution of 10% glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS for unfilled PC/ABS is driven by the need to hold latch-loading geometry after repeated thermal cycling, not by tensile strength alone. Components molded from GFRPC/ABS-10 typically exhibit a flexural modulus in the range of 3,200–3,800 MPa under ISO 178, a notched Charpy impact of 8–12 kJ/m² at 23°C under ISO 179-1/1eA, and a heat deflection temperature of 108–118°C at 1.8 MPa under ISO 75-2. Compliance for interior structural carriers is anchored to EU ELV 2000/53/EC Article 4(2)(a) exemptions for lead in copper alloys and to REACH Annex XVII entries applicable to ABS residual styrene; material marking follows ISO 11469 as >PC+ABS-GF10<, and OEM validation commonly references ISO 1133-1:2022 MVR values between 8 and 18 cm³/10 min at 260°C/5 kg. Formulation addition ratio in this segment is typically 100 wt% GFRPC/ABS-10 for the carrier substrate, but high-clip-retention regions are frequently overmolded or insert-molded with unfilled PC/ABS at a 70:30 ratio of GF10 to unfilled resin to reduce local glass-fiber weld-line embrittlement. The downstream production process uses all-electric injection molding machines with clamp force between 1,200 and 1,800 kN, mold temperature held at 70–90°C, and pre-drying at 80°C for 3–4 hours to reduce moisture below 0.02 wt%; when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying is extended to 4 hours minimum. Gate placement is positioned to align glass fiber orientation with latch-loading direction, and warpage after ejection is controlled by maintaining a packing pressure of 50–70 MPa for 4–6 seconds. Terminal finished product types include door module carriers with integrated window guide rails, instrument panel retainer brackets, center console side supports, and HVAC duct flanges where dimensional stability after ageing at 85°C/85% RH is required.
The replacement threshold is governed by flexural creep and mounting boss pull-out, not by density. In low-voltage enclosure frames with wall sections between 2.5 and 4.0 mm, 10% glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS provides sufficient rigidity when the unsupported span is below 120 mm and the service temperature does not exceed 80°C continuously. Standards governing this segment include IEC 62208:2002 for empty enclosures, IEC 60529:2013 for IP55 ingress protection, and IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire testing at 850°C for unattended equipment; however, unfilled GFRPC/ABS-10 without a flame-retardant package is normally rated HB under UL 94, and V-0 performance requires blending with a halogenated or phosphorus FR masterbatch. Addition ratio in electrical enclosure compounds is commonly 100 wt% GFRPC/ABS-10 for non-current-carrying structural frames, or 80:20 GF10 to FR-PC/ABS where glow-wire ignition must be suppressed below 2 seconds at 850°C. Downstream processing involves mold-flow simulation to eliminate weld lines at snap-fit undercuts, followed by injection molding with a general-purpose screw of 20:1 L/D and compression ratio 2.5:1; melt temperature is 250–265°C, mold temperature is 60–80°C, and screw back pressure is limited to 2–4 bar because higher shear reduces glass fiber length and lowers impact. Screw speed is held at 80–120 rpm to limit fiber attrition. Terminal finished product types are MCB distribution board base frames, DIN-rail mounting plates, meter enclosure covers, and photovoltaic combiner box bases.
| Application segment | Governing standard(s) | Test method | Critical threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automotive door module carriers | ELV 2000/53/EC, REACH Annex XVII, ISO 11469 | ISO 527-2, ISO 179-1/1eA, ISO 75-2 | Charpy notched ≥ 8 kJ/m²; HDT ≥ 108°C |
| Low-voltage enclosure frames | IEC 62208:2002, IEC 60529:2013, IEC 60695-2-11 | UL 94, IEC 60695-2-11 | Glow wire 850°C; UL 94 HB unless FR-modified |
| Power tool housings | IEC 62841-1:2014, RoHS 2011/65/EU | IEC 62841-1 Clause 20.1, UL 94 | Glow wire 750°C; UL 94 HB |
| Consumer electronics internal frames | IEC 62368-1:2023, REACH SVHC, RoHS 2011/65/EU | UL 94, IEC 62368-1 Clause 6.2 | UL 94 HB; wall thickness 1.2 mm |
| Diagnostic equipment enclosures | IEC 60601-1:2005/AMD2:2020, ISO 14971:2019, ISO 10993-1:2018 | ISO 22088-3:2008 | 70% isopropanol, 24 h, 23°C |
| Industrial HMI enclosures | IEC 61010-1:2010/AMD1:2019, NEMA 250, RoHS 2011/65/EU | UL 61010-1, NEMA 250 Type 12/13 | Surface resistivity 109 Ω/sq if antistatic |
Because power tool housings absorb impact at cold-start temperatures and must survive drop tests onto concrete from 1.0 m, gate location and glass-fiber orientation in GFRPC/ABS-10 are controlled to prevent crack propagation along weld lines. The governing standards are IEC 62841-1:2014 Clause 20.1 for glow-wire resistance at 750°C for attended equipment, UL 94 HB for hand-held tool housings, and RoHS 2011/65/EU with Commission Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863 for phthalate restrictions. Formulation addition ratio is typically 100 wt% GFRPC/ABS-10 for motor housings and gearcase covers; for battery pack shells subjected to vibration, a 15–25 wt% blend of GF10 into unreinforced PC/ABS reduces notch sensitivity at corner radii below 1.5 mm. The downstream production process uses high-speed injection molding with clamp force between 1,500 and 2,500 kN, melt temperature 255–270°C, and mold temperature 70–80°C; gas-assisted injection or overflow wells are used at thick screw bosses to eliminate sink marks. Terminal finished product types include angle grinder clamshell housings, drill motor frames, and battery pack top enclosures with insert-molded brass M3.5 terminals.
Insert molding of brass M2.5 or M3.0 heat-stake inserts into GF10 PC/ABS at melt temperatures of 255–265°C produces tensile stress around the insert that can lower effective notched impact by 20–30% unless post-molding annealing at 70°C for 2 hours is applied. Standards for this segment are IEC 62368-1:2023 Clause 6.2 for fire enclosure materials, UL 94 HB, REACH SVHC candidate list, and RoHS 2011/65/EU. Addition ratio in thin-wall laptop frames is commonly 100 wt% GFRPC/ABS-10 for display hinge brackets, while keyboard decks use a 50:50 dilution with unfilled PC/ABS to maintain boss pull-out strength above 150 N. The downstream process relies on all-electric injection molding with hot runner valve gates and sequential valve-gate control to balance fill pressure across wall sections as thin as 1.2 mm; mold temperature is set to 80–90°C to improve surface replication and reduce glass-fiber read-through. Terminal finished product types include notebook display hinge brackets, tablet internal midframes, monitor stand structural arms, and camera gimbal housings.
The relevant failure mode is environmental stress cracking at molded-in stress concentrations, not bulk polymer degradation. For GF10 PC/ABS used in non-patient-contact diagnostic equipment enclosures, compliance is anchored to IEC 60601-1:2005/AMD2:2020 for medical electrical equipment, ISO 14971:2019 for risk management, and ISO 10993-1:2018 for biocompatibility evaluation only when the housing is classified as a limited-contact surface. Published data for this specific configuration under repeated alcohol exposure is limited; industrial qualification therefore uses ISO 22088-3:2008 Method B bent-strip ESC testing with 70% isopropanol at 23°C for 24 hours. Formulation addition ratio is 100 wt% GFRPC/ABS-10 for structural chassis components, but external bezels are sometimes blended at 90:10 with a silicone-modified PC to improve disinfectant wipe resistance. The downstream production process uses medical-grade cleanroom injection molding with clamp force 1,200–1,600 kN, melt temperature 245–260°C, and pre-drying at 90°C for 4 hours to a residual moisture below 0.02 wt%; molded parts are annealed at 75°C for 2 hours to relax gate and insert stresses. Strong alkaline disinfectants are avoided because carbonate hydrolysis accelerates surface haze and ESC. Terminal finished product types include ultrasound cart base housings, hematology analyzer front covers, and laboratory centrifuge side panels.
Industrial HMI enclosures molded from GFRPC/ABS-10 are specified where the continuous ambient temperature remains below 65°C but occasional excursions to 95°C during panel heat-soak tests must not cause mounting boss distortion. Standards applicable to this segment are IEC 61010-1:2010/AMD1:2019 for safety requirements for electrical equipment, UL 61010-1, NEMA 250 Type 12/13 for dust and liquid ingress, and RoHS 2011/65/EU. Formulation addition ratio is commonly 100 wt% GFRPC/ABS-10 for display bezels and rear shells, with 5 wt% antistatic masterbatch added when surface resistivity below 109 Ω/sq is required to prevent LCD damage from electrostatic discharge. The downstream production process uses single-point tunnel gating or banana gating into the cavity, injection melt temperature 250–265°C, mold temperature 70–85°C, and a holding pressure profile of 60 MPa falling to 30 MPa over 6 seconds to minimize sink over ribs. Batch-to-batch MVR variation is held below ±1.5 cm³/10 min to avoid short shots in thin ribs. Terminal finished product types include PLC controller housings, HMI touch panel frames, industrial PC front bezels, and machine vision camera enclosures.

The Guangzhou Keyuan New Material product GFRPC/ABS-10 is a glass-fiber reinforced polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene compound with a nominal glass fiber loading of 10 wt%. The grade is compounded as pellets for injection moulding and, with suitable rheology, profile extrusion. The reinforcement level is specified to raise tensile and flexural modulus while retaining a proportion of the flow and toughness characteristics of a PC/ABS matrix. Because lot-specific data control release, the ranges reported below are representative of industrial 10 wt% glass-fiber reinforced PC/ABS systems; the manufacturer’s lot certificate remains the controlling specification.
Under ISO 1183-1:2019, density is expected in the range of 1.22–1.28 g/cm³. Melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260°C and 5.0 kg is commonly 10–25 cm³/10 min for a 10 wt% glass-fiber PC/ABS; the actual value depends on the PC-to-ABS ratio and any lubricant package. Moisture absorption under ISO 62:2008 after 24 h at 23°C is typically 0.2–0.3%.
Pre-drying is required. Residual moisture above 0.02% at processing temperatures above 240°C can hydrolyse the polycarbonate phase, producing surface splay, melt viscosity reduction, and impact loss. A desiccant dryer at 80–100°C for 3–4 h with a dew point of -30°C or lower is the standard condition. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, transfer lines should be closed and hopper residence time limited to 30 min after drying.
Melt temperature at the nozzle is typically 240–270°C. The lower boundary is set by glass-fiber dispersion and homogeneous melt flow; the upper boundary is set by polycarbonate chain scission and ABS butadiene oxidation. Residence time above 270°C should not exceed 5 min. A rising barrel profile from 230°C at the feed throat to 250–260°C at the metering zone is typical, with back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa to maintain mixing without excessive fiber attrition. Mold temperature should be held at 60–90°C; the upper end reduces orientation gradient in thin-wall parts but increases cycle time.
Glass fiber is abrasive. Injection units should use hardened steel screws, bimetallic barrels, and screw tip check rings. Screw L/D ratios of 20:1 or higher are preferred. Compounding is normally performed on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D of 36:1 to 44:1, with glass fiber side-fed downstream of the first kneading block to limit fiber breakage. Fiber attrition during injection moulding can reduce average fiber length by 30–50%, which lowers modulus relative to laboratory plaque data. At the recommended melt temperature, melt viscosity at 1000 s⁻¹ and 260°C can range from 150–300 Pa·s; the viscosity curve is shear-thinning and more non-Newtonian than unfilled PC/ABS due to fiber network formation. Gate dimensions below 1.0 mm may cause fiber accumulation and inconsistent fill in thin-wall tooling.
Mould shrinkage measured to ISO 294-4:2018 is typically 0.2–0.4% in the flow direction and 0.4–0.7% transverse to flow. The difference is the result of glass fibers aligning with the melt front; transverse shrinkage is dominated by the PC/ABS matrix. In flat housings with wall thickness below 2.0 mm, this anisotropy causes out-of-plane warpage if gate placement creates unbalanced flow lengths. Increasing mold temperature to 80–90°C and reducing hold-pressure decay can mitigate the effect but does not eliminate it. Skin-layer fiber orientation near the mold surface is highly flow-aligned, while the core can show more random orientation depending on part thickness. This skin-core structure produces flow-direction coefficient of linear thermal expansion of approximately 2.5–4.0×10⁻⁵ K⁻¹ and transverse expansion of 5.0–7.0×10⁻⁵ K⁻¹ when measured under ISO 11359-2:1999.
Weld lines are a limiting mechanical feature. At a knit line, short glass fibers do not bridge the interface, so tensile strength at the weld line can be 30–50% lower than bulk strength measured under ISO 527-2:2012. Parts requiring multiple gates, bosses, or ribs should be tooled with flow-front meeting angles and gate positions that place weld lines outside highly loaded regions.
Representative comparative data are provided below. These are not specification limits; actual lot values must be confirmed by certificate of analysis.

The table indicates a property cliff-edge: notched impact falls sharply once glass fiber content rises from 0 wt% to 10 wt%, whereas tensile modulus rises nearly linearly. Lot-to-lot variation in glass fiber content of ±1 wt% is not unusual and can produce measurable shifts in modulus and impact. Incoming inspection should include ash content per ISO 1172:1996 or ASTM D5630-13 because this variation is sufficient to shift tensile modulus by several hundred megapascals.
The main difference is stiffness. The tensile modulus increases from 1.8–2.5 GPa to 3.5–4.5 GPa, which allows thinner wall sections for equal bending stiffness. However, notched Izod impact drops from a typical 35–60 kJ/m² to 8–15 kJ/m², so the product is less tolerant of sharp internal corners and high local strain. Snap-fit designs should use a minimum root radius of 0.6 mm and maximum assembly strain below 1.0% unless validated by dynamic test. At 80°C, tensile modulus retention in glass-filled PC/ABS typically remains above 70% of the 23°C value, while unfilled PC/ABS may retain 50–60%; this difference is significant for brackets near heat sources but below the heat deflection threshold.
Compared with unfilled PC/ABS, the glass fiber grade produces lower isotropic mould shrinkage but higher anisotropic shrinkage, higher density, and a fiber-visible surface. It is therefore specified for automotive interior brackets, HVAC housing frames, electronic equipment chassis, appliance motor mounts, and office equipment structural bases where stiffness and dimensional control are required and surface gloss is secondary. Against a 20 wt% glass fiber reinforced PC/ABS, GFRPC/ABS-10 offers lower melt viscosity, lower density, less tool wear, and better surface uniformity, while sacrificing tensile modulus and heat deflection temperature. Against a mineral-filled PC/ABS, the glass fiber grade provides higher tensile modulus per unit density but introduces greater warpage risk due to orientation.
The addition of 10 wt% glass fiber does not create a conductive network. Volume resistivity remains in the 1014–1015 ohm·cm range under IEC 62631-3-1:2016. Surface resistivity and dielectric strength are comparable to unfilled PC/ABS, though surface roughness from exposed fiber may affect creepage and clearance in high-humidity environments. For electronic enclosures requiring UL 94 V-0, the product must be verified against the specific certified formulation; glass-filled PC/ABS without flame retardants typically achieves UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm.
Chemical exposure boundaries are similar to other PC/ABS grades. Strong alkalis, aromatic hydrocarbons, and ketones can cause environmental stress cracking in the polycarbonate phase. Contact with esters, petroleum-based greases, and organic solvents should be evaluated under load. The product is not suited for continuous exposure to chlorinated solvents or concentrated aqueous sodium hydroxide.
Under REACH 1907/2006 and RoHS 2011/65/EU, supplier conformity declarations are required for the specific lot. The glass fiber and PC/ABS base resins are generally compatible with restricted-substance limits, but flame-retardant or colour masterbatch additives can alter the compliance profile. The product is not food-contact, medical, or exterior body panel approved unless separate certification is provided.
Continuous-use temperature under load should be limited to 80–90°C unless creep, oxidative ageing, and hydrolysis data for the specific application environment are available. Applications involving hot humid air above 60°C and 85% relative humidity require accelerated ageing because the polycarbonate phase can hydrolyse at elevated temperature. Contact with strong alkalis, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents should be avoided in stressed parts.
