Application of Guangzhou Keyuan New Material PC/ABS 9300

In automotive interior substrate production—specifically instrument panel lower carriers, floor console substrates, glove box housings, and knee bolster frames—Guangzhou Keyuan New Material PC/ABS 9300 is introduced as the melt phase that balances long flow length with low-temperature ductility in tools exceeding 800 mm flow path. The application is governed by material specifications written around IATF 16949:2016 control plans, ISO 11469 identification marking, and interior flammability test protocols such as FMVSS 302 / SAE J369; OEM-specific volatile organic compound requirements commonly reference VDA 278 or ISO 12219-3 depending on the vehicle programme. The feedstock on the shop floor is not a neat pellet feed but a controlled blend of 100 parts by weight PC/ABS 9300 with 8–15 parts of internally generated regrind from identical sprues and short-shot rejects, provided sieve analysis confirms no fines above 0.5 wt%. Colour masterbatch is added at 1.5–2.5 wt%, and an internal mould-release package is maintained at 0.3–0.6 wt%; for visible low-gloss surfaces, matting masterbatch is added at 1.0–1.5 phr only after rib thickness and graining depth are frozen. The feedstock is dried in a dehumidifying hopper dryer at 100–105 °C for 4–6 h to a Karl Fischer moisture endpoint below 0.04 wt%; processing outside this moisture window produces splay, odorous decomposition products, and notched Izod impact losses of more than 15% in plant trials. Production injection moulding is performed on a 1,200–1,600 t hydraulic or servo-driven clamp unit with a 22:1–24:1 L/D general-purpose screw, barrel setpoints from rear to nozzle typically 235 °C, 250 °C, 260 °C, 265 °C, and mould temperature 70–85 °C; injection speed is profiled to maintain flow-front velocity above 150 mm/s in thin rib sections but below 300 mm/s at the gate land to avoid jetting. Fill/pack switchover is set at 95–98% of shot volume, packing pressure at 55–75 MPa, and cooling time is determined by part thickness squared divided by thermal diffusivity, typically 18–28 s for 2.5 mm nominal wall. Terminal products include instrument panel lower supports, glove box housings, centre console carriers, and knee bolster frames; each carries a molded-in material code and is subjected to dimensional audit on a CMM after 24 h conditioning at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity.

Which Enclosure-Level Requirements Are Met When PC/ABS 9300 Is Used in Information Technology Equipment Housings?

PC/ABS 9300 enters ITE applications as a melt processable substrate for monitor and laptop bottom cases, router shells, adapter housings, and docking station chassis, where IEC 62368-1:2018 enclosure robustness and fire enclosure requirements apply at part level. The formulation is typically 96.0–98.0 wt% PC/ABS 9300, 2.0–4.0 wt% pigmented masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 wt% external lubricant; conductive carbon-black masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 wt% is incorporated when the assembly must comply with IEC 61340-5-1 protected area electrostatic dissipation, but this reduces flow length and raises melt pressure. Drying at 100–105 °C for 4 h to ≤0.04 wt% moisture is essential; moisture levels above 0.06 wt% degrade dart-drop performance and create silver streaks on surfaces that are later cosmetically critical. Moulding is conducted on 250–650 t toggle or hydraulic machines with barrel temperature profiles 230–270 °C, hot-runner manifold set to 255–270 °C, and mould temperature 60–80 °C; thin-wall sections between 1.2 mm and 2.0 mm require fill velocities of 180–250 mm/s and gate seal times of 0.8–1.5 s. Terminal parts include flat-panel display rear covers, router bottom housings, power adapter covers, and docking station chassis. The grade is normally tested to UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm or to V-series only if let down with a flame-retardant masterbatch; a UL 94 V-0 classification is not claimed for neat PC/ABS 9300 unless specifically stated in the production lot datasheet. Regulatory documentation includes RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II, REACH SVHC declarations, and IEC 62474 material declarations.

Low-voltage switchgear and socket breaker enclosures require 850 °C glow-wire testing on live-part contact surfaces, and PC/ABS 9300 is used in these parts only with an intumescent flame-retardant masterbatch let-down rather than as an inherently V-0 material. In the compounding or on-press blend, 100 parts of PC/ABS 9300 are combined with 8.0–12.0 wt% of a halogen-free phosphorus-nitrogen FR masterbatch; below 8.0 wt%, the 850 °C glow-wire requirement is not reproduced because the char structure is too sparse, while above 12.0 wt%, production trials show notched Izod impact decline exceeding 25% against the base alloy and mould deposit accumulation increases on vented cores. Industry compliance for this segment is defined by IEC 60670-1:2013 for enclosures for household and similar fixed electrical installations, IEC 60695-2-11:2021 for glow-wire flammability test method, and IEC 60112:2020 for comparative tracking index; terminal parts must also satisfy creepage and clearance dimensions under IEC 60664-1:2020. The downstream production route involves pre-blending the FR masterbatch with PC/ABS 9300 in a low-shear tumble mixer for 15–20 min, followed by dehumidifying drying at 95–100 °C for 4–6 h to 0.03–0.05 wt% moisture; over-drying above 110 °C for more than 8 h causes acid-catalysed hydrolysis and is measurable as a drop in melt strength. Injection moulding uses 650–1,300 t clamp force, barrel temperatures of 240–265 °C, nozzle 260 °C, and tool temperature 65–85 °C; screw back pressure is set at 0.8–1.5 MPa to avoid FR additive segregation, and screw speed is limited to 40–70 rpm. Thick-wall sections of 3.0–5.0 mm require lower hold pressure, longer cooling, and sequential valve gating to prevent sink marks on certification test specimens. Terminal products include MCB distribution board covers, residual current device housings, wall socket frames, and industrial control panel enclosures. The FR-MB ratio must be re-qualified for each cavity configuration because glow-wire pass/fail varies with wall thickness, distance from gate, and tool venting.

If Glass-Fibre-Reinforced Polyamide Is Replaced in Portable Power Tool Housing Shells, What Changes in Damping and Gate Design Must Be Controlled?

Portable power tool shells have commonly been moulded from glass-fibre-reinforced PA6 or PA6.6, and replacement with PC/ABS 9300 is executed only when the part design has been re-validated for lower modulus, higher damping, and reduced water absorption. The formulation for this segment is 100 parts PC/ABS 9300, 2.0–3.0 wt% colour masterbatch, and 0.3–0.5 wt% mould-release agent; glass-fibre reinforcement is generally avoided because it increases anisotropy in impact response and destroys the surface gloss expected on professional tool housings. The governing mechanical and electrical safety framework is IEC 62841-1:2014 for hand-held motor-operated tools, with enclosure flammability classified under UL 94 HB; if double insulation or reinforced insulation is required, the part is tested as a final assembly according to IEC 60664-1:2020 and not as raw material. Drying in a desiccant dryer at 100 °C for 4 h to ≤0.04 wt% moisture is mandatory before moulding thick-wall shells of 2.5–4.0 mm. The processing equipment includes 500–1,000 t injection machines, barrel temperatures 240–270 °C, mould temperatures 60–80 °C, and hot runner systems with valve gates to manage weld lines at screw bosses; injection speed is profiled to avoid gas entrapment at rib intersections. Terminal finished products include angle grinder housings, drill shells, impact driver bodies, and battery pack covers. Published data for this specific grade in drop-test configurations is limited; tool manufacturers must perform instrumented dart impact and 1.0 m drop trials on conditioned parts before serial adoption.

Surface-Painted Control Panels for Domestic Appliances: Adhesion, Weld-Line Management, and Tolerance Gradients

PC/ABS 9300 is processed into domestic appliance control panels and fascia parts where the moulded substrate must survive repeated exposure to low-level detergents, oily fingerprints, and paint curing ovens without delamination. The formulation is 100 parts PC/ABS 9300 with 1.5–3.0 wt% colour masterbatch; silicone or wax external mould-release agents are excluded from this segment because they migrate to the surface and reduce two-component polyurethane paint adhesion. The applicable safety standard is IEC 60335-1:2020 for household and similar electrical appliances, with IEC 60335-2-7:2019 used for washing machine control panels and similar sub-assemblies; surface flammability is assessed by IEC 60695-11-10:2013 if the part is adjacent to current-carrying elements. Drying is performed at 100–105 °C for 4–6 h to 0.03–0.05 wt% moisture. Injection moulding is carried out on 300–650 t machines with barrel temperatures 240–270 °C, mould temperature 70–85 °C, and polished tool surfaces; gate locations are selected to move weld lines outside the visible A-surface or into textured zones where adhesion is more tolerant. After moulding, parts are cleaned with isopropanol, not ketone-based solvents, because ketones induce environmental stress cracking in PC/ABS and reduce impact strength. The paint system is a two-component polyurethane primer/topcoat with a dry film thickness of 20–35 µm, baked at 70–80 °C for 30 min, and cross-hatch adhesion is checked according to ISO 2409:2020. Terminal products include washing machine control panels, dishwasher fascia strips, range hood front panels, and dryer control brackets. The specified tolerance for coated panels is held to ±0.10 mm on critical mounting bosses; this drives the selection of the hot runner and the packing-pressure profile rather than the base resin itself.

Non-patient-contact diagnostic laboratory equipment enclosures are moulded from PC/ABS 9300 when the mechanical loads are dominated by frequent lid opening, heavy usage, and transport vibration rather than direct tissue contact. Compliance for such devices falls under IEC 61010-1:2010/AMD1:2016 for safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use; if the device is part of an electromedical system, IEC 60601-1:2005+A1:2012 applies to the final assembly, but the material itself is not granted biological approval. A typical formulation contains 100 parts PC/ABS 9300, 1.0–2.0 wt% masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 wt% antistatic additive only if internal electronics require static dissipation; recycled content is excluded from this segment because batch traceability and consistent melt viscosity are more critical than in consumer uses. Processing uses 300–800 t injection machines, barrel temperatures 245–270 °C, mould 70–85 °C, and drying at 100 °C for 4–5 h to ≤0.040 wt% moisture; mould steel is corrosion-resistant tool steel because the grade is hygroscopic and mould condensation can occur in humid assembly plants. Terminal finished products include diagnostic analyser front bezels, centrifuge covers, laboratory pipetting robot housings, and bench-top PCR cycler chassis. The manufacturer must verify no unintended release of volatile compounds into the sample area by ISO 10993-12:2021 extraction if the device is regulated as laboratory equipment; published data for this specific configuration is limited, so each grade lot must be qualified by extraction testing rather than assumed from generic PC/ABS literature.

Preparing Exterior Emblem Carriers for Decorative Chromium Systems

Preparing exterior emblem carriers for decorative chromium systems requires electroplating-grade ABS morphology, and PC/ABS 9300 is evaluated in this segment only after acid etch adhesion trials. The plating-specific formulation excludes external mould-release agents because silicone or waxes remain as monomolecular layers that inhibit chromic acid etching of the butadiene phase; the feedstock is 100 parts PC/ABS 9300, with 0.1–0.3 wt% pigment masterbatch and no regrind unless the regrind is generated from the same plating-approved lot and limited to 10 wt%. The governing standards are ISO 1456:2009 for electroplated coatings of nickel plus chromium on plastics and ASTM B604 class-specific decorative plating, with automotive assembly-level performance validated under OEM stone-chip and thermal-shock specifications; adhesion is measured by peel test or thermal-shock cycling between -40 °C and 85 °C rather than by visual inspection. Production of plating-ready substrates uses 300–800 t injection machines, melt temperature 250–270 °C, mould temperature 65–80 °C, and high gloss polished tool surfaces; gate location must avoid visible plate-flow lines because plated chromium amplifies any surface defect. After moulding, parts are annealed at 80–85 °C for 1–2 h to relieve internal stress, then passed through pre-plate etching, electroless nickel, electroplated copper, nickel, and chromium; plating thickness is specified at 20–30 µm total. Terminal products include grille emblems, door handle shells, liftgate garnish surrounds, and mirror scalps. Published adhesion data for this specific PC/ABS 9300 lot is limited; pre-production etching trials are mandatory before series use.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Guangzhou Keyuan New Material PC/ABS 9300 is an unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene thermoplastic blend supplied for injection moulding applications that require a balance of low-temperature ductility, heat distortion resistance, melt processability and dimensional stability. The supplier’s public datasheet for the 9300 designation is limited; therefore, the numerical ranges cited in this document are representative of unfilled PC/ABS blends in the same general flow class and must be replaced with lot-specific certificate of analysis values before final part approval. The suffix 9300 does not correspond to a melt volume-flow rate, heat deflection temperature, or UL 94 class in ISO or ASTM public listings.

What processing window governs Guangzhou Keyuan PC/ABS 9300 in high-volume injection moulding?

Pre-drying is mandatory because absorbed moisture hydrolyses the polycarbonate phase above 250 °C, producing surface splay, weld-line weakness and impact loss. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40 °C or lower should deliver 4 h to 6 h at 80 °C to 90 °C; when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying time should be extended to 8 h. The melt temperature measured by needle pyrometer should be held between 250 °C and 280 °C, with the lower band used for wall sections above 3 mm and the upper band for sections below 1.5 mm. Mould temperatures between 60 °C and 90 °C are required to control surface replication and stress relaxation. A general-purpose screw with a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 and an L/D of 20:1 to 24:1 is appropriate; back pressure should be maintained between 0.3 MPa and 0.7 MPa. Melt residence time should not exceed 8 min at 280 °C because thermal degradation shifts melt viscosity and causes yellowing. A melt cushion of 3 mm to 6 mm and screw decompression of 2 mm to 5 mm before recovery reduce air entrapment and splay.

In thin-wall power adapter and sensor housing applications with nominal wall stock between 1.0 mm and 1.6 mm, the flow path should keep injection pressure below the clamp capacity of the moulding machine. For PC/ABS 9300, a spiral flow length of approximately 300 mm to 450 mm at 260 °C melt temperature and 80 °C mould temperature is representative of medium-flow unfilled PC/ABS under 80 MPa injection pressure; published data for this specific grade is limited, so these values should be confirmed by short-shot or spiral-mould trials. Mould design should avoid abrupt thickness transitions exceeding 25% of adjacent wall stock because differential shrinkage in the polycarbonate-rich phase promotes sink marks and internal voids. Gates should be placed away from high-impact regions and weld lines, since PC/ABS retains more weld-line impact sensitivity than ABS alone. On production-scale hydraulic injection moulding machines with clamp forces from 800 kN to 3,000 kN, gate blush is observed when gate-entry flow-front velocity exceeds 300 mm/s to 500 mm/s; reducing injection speed during the first 5 mm to 10 mm of fill and using a fan or tab gate with a land length of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm reduces surface shear. Jetting is suppressed by raising melt temperature within the processing band, increasing mould temperature, or adding flow leaders.

Mechanical, thermal and rheological reference points for specification comparison

Table 1 compiles representative property windows for unfilled PC/ABS grades in the same general flow category as PC/ABS 9300. The data are drawn from publicly available datasheets for medium-flow PC/ABS blends under standard specimen preparation conditions and are intended for material triage, not for finite-element input without grade-specific values.

The properties in Table 1 demonstrate the central difference from general-purpose ABS: PC/ABS 9300 class provides higher notched impact at low temperature and higher heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa, but it requires drying and has higher density. Compared with unmodified polycarbonate, PC/ABS offers lower melt viscosity at the same temperature and often better resistance to thick-section impact failure, while sacrificing optical clarity and high-temperature load-bearing capacity.

At sub-zero drop-test temperatures, the notched Izod impact difference between PC/ABS and ABS is decisive for power tool housings and appliance structural covers that must survive free-fall tests following IEC 60068-2-31 from 1 m height onto concrete. Under ISO 180/A, unfilled PC/ABS in the 9300 class may retain 35 kJ/m² to 50 kJ/m² at -30 °C, while general-purpose ABS often falls below 8 kJ/m². This ductile-to-brittle shift is influenced by rubber-particle size, grafting efficiency and residual stress. Lot-to-lot variation can exceed 10% even when average values are consistent; therefore, incoming inspection should include melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1 and notched Izod under ISO 180/A on dry-as-moulded specimens. For outdoor signage, UV stabilisation is required because the butadiene phase undergoes oxidative embrittlement unless adequate UV absorbers and hindered amine light stabilisers are incorporated.

    When PC/ABS 9300 is substituted for glass-filled PC/ABS in non-structural aesthetic components

Replacing a 10% to 20% glass-fibre-filled PC/ABS with an unfilled PC/ABS such as 9300 reduces flexural modulus from approximately 4,000 MPa to 2,300 MPa under ISO 178 and increases mould shrinkage from 0.2–0.4% to 0.5–0.7% under ISO 294-4. The unfilled grade compensates with lower density from about 1.25–1.35 g/cm³ to 1.13–1.16 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1, lower tool abrasion, and improved surface gloss. This substitution is acceptable only where the component experiences low structural load and where the stiffness reduction can be accommodated by rib thickness or geometry modifications. If the original glass-filled part was designed with a safety factor below 1.5 against flexural failure, direct material substitution without finite-element revalidation is not recommended.

Another difference is elongation at break. Unfilled PC/ABS typically exhibits tensile elongation at yield of 4% to 6% and nominal elongation at break above 50% under ISO 527-2, while glass-filled grades often rupture below 3% to 5%. This makes the unfilled grade preferable for snap-fit features and clips that require flexural strain without fracture. Snap-fit design should limit strain to below 1.5% for repeated assembly and below 2% for one-time assembly, with the exact allowable value dependent on gate location and moulded-in stress.

Post-moulding painting, adhesive bonding and electroplating require removal of mould-release residues and surface oxidation. PC/ABS 9300 is expected to be sensitive to ketone, aromatic hydrocarbon and chlorinated solvent attack; solvent wiping with methyl ethyl ketone or toluene is unsuitable because stress cracking can initiate at moulded-in residual stress above 5 MPa to 10 MPa. Adhesion systems based on acrylic foam tapes or cyanoacrylate adhesives should be qualified by lap-shear testing up to 0.5 MPa at the maximum service temperature. If hot-stamping or laser marking is specified, energy density and dwell time should be reduced relative to ABS because the polycarbonate phase can yellow when surface temperature exceeds 140 °C. For painted exterior components, flame or corona pre-treatment in combination with a compatible primer is standard practice; the wetting tension after treatment should be monitored by contact-angle or dyne-pen methods.

Regulatory compliance and electrical performance should be verified against lot-specific test reports

Although PC/ABS 9300 may be offered as a halogen-free grade, no compliance claim can be made without a supplier certificate. For electrical and electronic equipment, relevant checks include UL 94 flammability class under IEC 60695-11-10, glow-wire ignition temperature under IEC 60695-2-13, and comparative tracking index under IEC 60112. The polycarbonate phase contributes high dielectric strength, often reported between 25 kV/mm and 35 kV/mm under IEC 60243-1, but this value is thickness-dependent and drops when the material is wetted or contaminated. For applications requiring UL 94 V-0 at thin wall, the selected grade may contain flame-retardant additives that alter thermal stability, mould deposit formation and chemical resistance; processing temperatures and mould maintenance intervals should be revalidated with production-scale trials.

On production lines, splay caused by wet resin is distinguishable from gas-hiss splay by moisture analysis after drying and by the distribution of surface defects. Random, fan-shaped splay near the gate usually indicates moisture, whereas uniform splay across the part often indicates trapped air or low back pressure. If splay persists after drying at 80 °C for 6 h, the melt temperature should be reduced in 5 °C steps while maintaining short-shot analysis of the flow front. Black specks and yellow streaks usually indicate thermal degradation in the barrel; purging with a machine-grade PC/ABS or acrylic purge compound and reducing barrel residence time below 8 min should be implemented. Mould deposit accumulation on vent surfaces can increase gas backpressure and cause local burns; vent depths for PC/ABS generally range from 0.02 mm to 0.04 mm at the parting line.
