Application of Guangzhou Keyuan New Material PC/ABS 830

In injection-molded automotive interior components with grained surfaces and low-gloss requirements, Guangzhou Keyuan New Material PC/ABS 830 is processed as the primary polymer phase without supplemental impact modification. The compound is typically introduced at 100 parts by weight; a polyolefin-based color masterbatch is metered at 1.0 wt% to 2.5 wt%, and regrind from hot-runner sprues and rejected parts is limited to 20 wt% to preserve consistent notched impact after thermal aging. For parts supplied to European and North American programs, flammability is evaluated under FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795:1989; interior materials commonly require burn rates below 100 mm/min, and PC/ABS 830 is tested at the minimum molded wall thickness rather than a fixed specimen thickness. Drying before injection molding is conducted in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4 h to a residual moisture limit of 0.02 wt%; processing on a medium-flow PC/ABS setting uses melt temperature 250–270 °C and mold temperature 60–80 °C. The observed production bottleneck in grained parts is gloss variation caused by mold temperature fluctuation; cooling circuits with turbulence flow above 0.3 m/s reduce gloss differentials across grain depths of 40–60 µm. Injection speed is held at 30–60 mm/s, and V/P switchover occurs at 95–98 % of fill volume to avoid jetting at rib intersections. Terminal part types include lower instrument panel trim, center console side covers, glove box outer shells, and seat side shields.

Does PC/ABS 830 Require Halogenated Flame Retardants in IEC 62368-1 Enclosures?

When PC/ABS 830 is assigned to consumer AC/DC adapter and charger enclosures, compliance is determined by enclosure thickness and end-product fire enclosure clauses of IEC 62368-1:2018, not by resin composition alone. In thin-wall designs at 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm nominal thickness, UL 94 HB is frequently sufficient where the end-product standard permits a non-V-rated material; no halogenated flame-retardant package is added to PC/ABS 830 in such cases. The formulation uses 100 parts PC/ABS 830, a color masterbatch at 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt%, and optionally 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt% of a silicone-based mold release for core-pull surfaces. If an OEM specification requires UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, a separate flame-retardant PC/ABS grade is substituted rather than modifying PC/ABS 830 with external additive packages, because halogen-free FR loadings above 8 wt% reduce tensile elongation at break and complicate RoHS compliance.

Injection molding of PC/ABS 830 for charger shells is run on all-electric machines with clamp force above 1200 kN and hot-runner valve gates. Drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h is required; moisture above 0.03 wt% produces splay at gate locations. Melt temperature is controlled at 255–275 °C, mold temperature at 70–90 °C, and fill time is kept below 0.8 s for thin-wall flow lengths of 120–160 mm at 1.5 mm wall. Holding pressure is typically 50–70 MPa for 3–6 s to compensate volumetric shrinkage near boss features. Production-scale failures occur when the cushion is allowed to fall below 3 mm; shot-to-shot variation then shifts peak cavity pressure by more than 8 %. Terminal product types include 20 W and 65 W wall chargers, wireless charging pad enclosures, and USB docking station shells.

For non-patient-contact enclosures, mobile medical cart work surfaces, and diagnostic equipment side panels, PC/ABS 830 is processed only after colorant and additive qualification because the final device manufacturer bears responsibility for ISO 10993-5:2009 cytotoxicity screening and IEC 60601-1:2005/AMD2:2020 risk management. The material is used without plasticizers or solvent-borne release agents; a qualified color masterbatch is added at 1.0 wt% to 3.0 wt%, and regrind is excluded from patient-accessible surfaces unless the manufacturer validates that repeated heat history does not shift extractables. Drying is performed at 80 °C for 4 h in a cleanroom-compatible desiccant dryer; processing uses melt temperature 245–270 °C and mold temperature 70–90 °C to minimize molded-in stress. PC/ABS 830 exhibits moderate resistance to 70 % isopropanol and quaternary ammonium disinfectants, but stress cracking has been observed on sharp bosses and gate vestiges; design radii should be maintained above 2 mm, and high-gloss surfaces should be textured or annealed to reduce solvent attack. Published data for this specific grade under repeated hospital disinfectant exposure is limited; end users should run ASTM D543-21 immersion or wick tests with the actual disinfectant concentration. Terminal products include mobile medical cart shells, ultrasound system side enclosures, and bedside monitor rear housings.

Power Tool Clamshell Molding and Notched Impact at −20 °C

Power tool housings made from PC/ABS 830 are subject to drop tests and low-temperature impact requirements that expose weld-line weakness more than base-material impact strength. The formulation uses 100 parts PC/ABS 830, with 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt% of an antioxidant masterbatch added when regrind levels exceed 15 wt%; no bulk impact modifier is required for screw bosses and clamshell ribs above 2.0 mm nominal wall. Compliance is assessed under IEC 62841-1:2014 for mechanical strength and ISO 180:2019 Method A for notched Izod at −20 °C; at this temperature, semicrystalline alternatives may outperform PC/ABS 830 in weld-line regions, and published data for this specific grade under sub-zero clamshell drop configurations is limited. Production-scale molding uses melt temperature 260–280 °C, mold temperature 80–90 °C, and clamp force calculated at 3–5 kN/cm² projected area. Gate placement is critical: edge gates at the parting line create flow fronts that rejoin at the tool’s central rib network, reducing notched Izod by 35–50 % compared with unfused material; valve gates placed near the center of the clamshell reduce weld-line length but require balanced runner manifolds. Drying at 80 °C for 4 h is mandatory, and melt residence time above 280 °C should not exceed 8 min to avoid polycarbonate molecular weight degradation. Terminal part types include cordless drill clamshells, angle grinder body housings, and reciprocating saw handle halves.

Indoor AC charging control boxes and wall-mounted electric vehicle supply equipment housings are molded from PC/ABS 830 where environmental exposure is limited to dry indoor environments and where UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm is acceptable under the end-product standard. The formulation adds 100 parts PC/ABS 830 with a UV-stabilized color masterbatch at 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% for indoor color stability; outdoor charging stations are generally outside the recommended use of this grade unless additional painting or UV-clearcoating is applied. Compliance for the application is evaluated under IEC 61851-1:2017 and UL 2594:2016 for enclosures, with material conformity under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH SVHC declarations. Drying at 80 °C for 4 h and processing at melt temperature 250–270 °C with mold temperature 70–90 °C are used. Large-area enclosures with projected areas above 900 cm² require sequential valve-gate opening to prevent flow hesitation and gas entrapment at the last-fill corner; cavity pressure sensors with a V/P switchover at 70–90 MPa reduce sink marks around mounting bosses. Terminal products include indoor AC charger enclosures, portable charge control boxes, and charging station pedestal cover panels.

When Wall Thickness Falls Below 1.2 mm in Small Appliance Covers

Below a nominal wall thickness of 1.2 mm, small appliance covers molded from PC/ABS 830 shift from pressure-limited to flow-limited processing, and the effective melt temperature window narrows to approximately ±5 °C around the supplier midpoint. The compound is used at 100 parts; a color masterbatch is added at 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt%, and if static dust accumulation is a concern, an antistatic masterbatch is added at 0.05 wt% to 0.2 wt%—above that level, notched impact and surface gloss become inconsistent. End-product safety compliance is addressed under IEC 60335-1:2020 and relevant part-2 standards; material flammability is reported as UL 94 HB at the minimum molded thickness, while glow-wire tests are end-product-specific and cannot be certified at the resin level. Drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h to 0.02 wt% moisture is mandatory. Injection molding uses melt temperature 255–280 °C, mold temperature 75–95 °C, and injection speed above 80 mm/s to fill ribs and louvers before the flow front freezes. Production-scale defects in this wall-thickness range include gas burns at the end of fill and gate blush from excessive shear rate; gas vents are positioned at the last 10–15 mm of flow length and are cut to a depth of 0.02–0.03 mm to avoid flash. Terminal products include vacuum cleaner handle covers, robotic vacuum top covers, and air purifier front shells.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Guangzhou Keyuan New Material PC/ABS 830 is an unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy pellet grade intended for injection molding of thin-wall technical components. The suffix 830 functions as a plant-level flow and impact designation within the manufacturer’s compounded PC/ABS range, not as a compositional specification. Because published lot-specific data for this particular configuration is limited, the values in this document are presented as a representative target band for high-flow unfilled PC/ABS compounds of the same viscosity class; the supplier’s certificate of analysis remains the controlling document for tooling release and production qualification.

    Material Architecture and Specification Framework

Polycarbonate contributes heat resistance, dimensional stability, and notched impact strength; the ABS phase contributes processability, lower melt viscosity, and controlled shrinkage. The two-phase morphology is stabilized with antioxidant and processing-aid packages that are not usually disclosed in public literature. Representative physical data for unfilled PC/ABS of the 830 class are summarized in Table 1. The melt mass-flow rate is measured at 260 °C under 5 kg load according to ISO 1133-1:2022; the target range of 15 g/10 min to 25 g/10 min places this material in the high-flow molding segment. A shift of ±3 g/10 min is sufficient to alter cavity pressure demand and weld-line position in multi-gate tools.

What Happens When Residual Moisture Exceeds 0.02 wt% at the Feed Throat

Moisture in PC/ABS feedstock is the dominant processing risk because the polycarbonate segment is hydrolytically unstable at melt temperature. Above 0.02 wt% residual moisture, the carbonate linkage undergoes chain scission; the practical result is lowered molecular weight, reduced Charpy impact, and visible splay or silver streaks radiating from the gate. In production-scale drying, desiccant wheel dryers with closed-loop airflow and dew-point display are required. A hopper temperature of 80–100 °C for 3–4 h with a delivered air dew point of -30 °C or lower reduces moisture to below 0.02 wt%. Hot-air hopper dryers are generally insufficient when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60% RH because equilibrium moisture in the pellets remains above the threshold.

Dryer throughput must be matched to shot consumption. The air-flow guideline of 3.8 m³/h per kg/h of throughput prevents channeling and uneven drying. In hoppers with a 2:1 height-to-diameter ratio, pellet residence time at the bottom may be reduced to 1.5 h at high consumption rates; a tapered hopper or a second dryer should be used. Vented barrels on standard injection machines cannot be relied upon to remove moisture from the melt once hydrolysis has begun because vent performance depends on back pressure, screw speed, and melt fill ratio.

Processors that receive 830 pellets in moisture-barrier packaging should not assume that unopened bags are dry. Condensation on cold pellets transferred from an unheated warehouse to a warmer molding floor can load surface moisture above 0.10 wt% within 30 min. The feed throat should be maintained at 40–60 °C to reduce condensation, and open bags should be returned to a sealed container or used within 2 h at high humidity.

When Regrind Levels Exceed 20 wt%, the Processing Window Narrows

The 830 grade can be blended with clean sprues and runners from the same lot. At 20 wt% regrind, the processing window narrows because pre-shredded material has larger surface area and greater moisture uptake, and the regrind fraction has already experienced one heat history. Melt flow rate typically increases by 2–4 g/10 min after one regrind cycle; to maintain cavity pressure, the rear barrel temperature may be reduced by 5–10 °C and the screw speed lowered by 10–20 rpm. Above 20 wt% regrind, weld-line strength can drop because the degraded polycarbonate fraction lowers melt strength and molecular weight. For load-bearing or safety-relevant components, 100% regrind is not recommended without validation by notched Charpy impact and tensile stress at yield testing on molded plaques.

Published reprocessing studies on unfilled PC/ABS indicate that notched impact retention after three cycles can fall to 80–90% of virgin values when regrind is dried correctly and mixed at 20–30 wt%; the same studies show that residual moisture during reprocessing produces greater loss than the heat history itself. A production line should therefore quarantine regrind in sealed, dry storage and blend by gravimetric feeder rather than by hand scoop to keep lot-to-lot impact variation below ±5%.

At Melt Temperatures Above 270 °C, Property Loss Becomes Irreversible

For thin-wall molding, barrel temperatures are set in a rising profile from rear to nozzle. The rear zone is held at 230–250 °C, the center zone at 240–260 °C, the front zone at 250–270 °C, and the nozzle at 250–270 °C. Sustained melt temperature above 270 °C accelerates random chain scission in the polycarbonate phase; odor, brown streaks, and a drop in melt viscosity become irreversible once thermal stabilizers are consumed. Melt residence time should be held below 10 min at full shot weight. If the machine cycle is interrupted for more than 10 min, the barrel should be purged with the same material or a suitable PC/ABS purging compound before production resumes.

Mold temperature is maintained at 60–90 °C. The lower end improves cycle time but may create high residual stress in deep-draw parts; the upper end improves knit-line strength and surface appearance but extends cooling time. A screw with 20:1 to 24:1 L/D, compression ratio 2.0:1 to 2.5:1, and a slit check ring is appropriate. Back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa and screw surface speed of 0.15–0.30 m/s assist homogenization without excessive shear heating.

Filling should be velocity-controlled to 90–95% of cavity volume, then switched to pressure-controlled packing at 40–60 MPa actual cavity pressure. Shot size should use 30–70% of barrel capacity to limit residence time and maintain melt consistency.

Applications for PC/ABS 830 are typically those requiring a balance of impact, heat resistance, and thin-wall fill: automotive interior trim carriers, electronic control unit housings, home appliance control panels, and power tool casings. In automotive lower interior trim, an unpainted component with nominal wall stock of 2.0–2.5 mm can be filled through gates of 1.0–1.5 mm without short shots when the tool is vented to 0.02–0.03 mm depth. For instrument panel or center console components, molded-in rib-to-wall thickness ratio is kept below 0.6 to avoid sink marks; the high flow of 830 reduces cavity pressure, but it does not eliminate the need for proper rib design. For electronic housings, molded bosses for self-tapping screws require a hole diameter designed for 50% thread engagement, and the boss outer diameter should be 2 to 2.5 times the screw diameter to prevent cracking during assembly. These design rules are accompanied by testing according to ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile yield and ISO 179-1:2020 for notched Charpy impact on finished parts, because molded part properties differ from laboratory specimen data.

Comparative Positioning Against Unmodified PC, ABS, and Lower-Flow PC/ABS Grades

Compared with unmodified polycarbonate, the PC/ABS 830 class offers lower melt viscosity and better stress-crack resistance against detergent and oily hand-cream exposure, but gives up optical clarity and some heat deflection temperature. A transparent polycarbonate may show HDT at 1.8 MPa of 120–130 °C under ISO 75-2:2013, while the present high-flow PC/ABS class is typically 105–115 °C. Compared with ABS, the polycarbonate fraction raises notched impact at low temperature and heat resistance, but mandates drying and raises melt temperature. Compared with lower-flow PC/ABS grades, the 830 designation is positioned for faster filling of multi-cavity tools and thinner walls; a lower-flow grade with MFR 5–10 g/10 min may be preferred for extruded sheet or blow molding where melt strength is critical.

Regulatory compliance for Guangzhou Keyuan New Material PC/ABS 830 must be confirmed from the current safety data sheet and product-specific declarations. The grade is typically compounded to satisfy RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 and REACH Regulation 1907/2006 SVHC concentration below 0.1 wt% per article. This does not constitute a food-contact approval; final parts intended for food or medical contact require migration testing under EU 10/2011 or USP 661.1 on the finished article. Unless the technical data sheet explicitly lists a UL 94 rating at 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm, the grade should not be assumed to be flame-retardant by default. If halogen-free construction is specified, supplier documentation must be requested because flame-retardant PC/ABS variants may contain brominated or phosphorus-based additives that change melt stability and plating behavior.

Solvent contact limits apply after molding. Aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents can initiate environmental stress cracking in parts with residual molded-in stress. For prototype validation, constant-strain exposure under ISO 22088-2:2006 or ASTM D543-21 should be performed with the intended cleaner or lubricant at 0.5% strain. Mold release agents containing dimethyl silicone can reduce paint adhesion; where post-mold painting or metallization is required, the molding process should use alcohol-based mold release or none, and corona or plasma treatment may be necessary. Unpainted exterior exposure is not recommended without a UV-stabilized variant because PC/ABS without adequate UV protection undergoes surface chalking and color shift under xenon arc testing to ISO 4892-2:2021 after 300–500 h depending on color and stabilizer package.

Quality Verification and Incoming Inspection Protocols

Incoming inspection for 830 should include melt mass-flow rate and moisture analysis before material enters the machine. The receiving laboratory verifies MFR at 260 °C under 5 kg using ISO 1133-1:2022; a deviation of ±3 g/10 min from the certificate of analysis indicates either contamination or a wrong grade. Moisture analysis is performed by Karl Fischer titration at 160 °C or by a validated loss-on-drying method; the acceptance limit is 0.02 wt%. Mechanical testing for first-article approval includes notched Charpy impact at 23 °C under ISO 179-1:2020, tensile stress at yield under ISO 527-2:2012, and HDT under ISO 75-2:2013. In production, shot-weight consistency is monitored across 10 consecutive cycles; a shot-weight range greater than 0.3% of mean shot weight indicates check-ring leakage or feed-throat bridging.
