Application of Guangdong Wanxi PC/ABS 311

Guangdong Wanxi PC/ABS 311 is handled in this application scope as an unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy. Seven downstream segments are selected based on documented industrial use of unfilled PC/ABS alloys: automotive interior substrates, low-voltage EV battery-management enclosures, information technology and telecommunications enclosures, household appliance control panels, portable power tool housings, 5G small cell housings, and non-patient-contact medical diagnostic enclosures. Segment selection excludes speculative industries and applies only where the material’s thermal capability, dimensional stability, and impact behaviour can be demonstrated through publicly available test methods. Critical values in this document are drawn from ISO 1133-1:2022, ISO 527-2, ISO 179-1/1eA, ISO 180/1A, ISO 306, UL 94, IEC 62368-1, and related national or regional standards. Where PC/ABS 311-specific published data are unavailable, the text states that limitation and provides the generic unfilled PC/ABS envelope for initial feasibility assessment. Production validation requires the supplier’s certificate of analysis, UL Yellow Card, and first-article inspection under the end product’s governing safety standard.

Crash-Loaded Instrument Panel Carriers in Volume Production

Compliance anchoring for instrument panel carriers includes ISO 3795 and FMVSS 302 for horizontal burn rate of interior materials, with most OEM specifications requiring burn rates below 100 mm/min. Odour and fogging are tested under VDA 270 and DIN 75201B, respectively; fogging condensate is commonly limited to <3 mg for cabin air quality. The formulation for this segment uses PC/ABS 311 as the base resin at 98.0–99.5 wt%. The residual fraction includes 0.2–0.5 wt% internal mold release, 0.1–0.3 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant, 0.1–0.3 wt% phosphite stabiliser, and up to 0.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch for dark substrates. In plants where ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, the material should not remain in unsealed hoppers for more than 30 min before processing. The downstream process is injection molding on twin-platen machines with screw L/D from 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio near 2.2:1. Pre-drying at 80 °C ± 5 °C for 4–6 hours to a residual moisture below 0.02% is mandatory. Melt temperature at the nozzle is held at 250–270 °C; exposure above 280 °C promotes polycarbonate chain scission and surface splay. Mold temperature is held at 60–80 °C to balance dimensional reproducibility against cycle time. For carriers longer than 1.2 m, sequential valve gating is applied to prevent flow hesitation. The main process conflict is weld-line embrittlement at rib intersections: a cold weld line can reduce notched Charpy impact from the typical unfilled PC/ABS range of 30–50 kJ/m² at 23 °C by more than 60%, measured by ISO 179-1/1eA. Tooling must position knit lines outside harness cutouts and airbag deployment hinge areas, or packing pressure must be locally raised. Terminal product types include instrument panel substrates, centre console load floors, glove box rear shells, and lower A/B-pillar trim panels.

When battery-management enclosures are moulded for 48 V mild-hybrid and 400 V battery module circuit boards, unfilled PC/ABS alloys are selected where the part is non-structural and must provide electrical insulation, low warp, and resistance to thermal cycling. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 62660-2 for vibration and thermal cycling of secondary lithium-ion cells, ISO 12405-4 for pack-level environmental testing, and UL 94 at final enclosure thickness; low-voltage components adjacent to power busbars are additionally checked under IEC 60664-1 for creepage and clearance. Addition ratio: because PC/ABS 311 is not inherently flame-retardant at UL 94 V-0 for wall sections below 1.5 mm, the typical compounding ratio is 88–92 wt% PC/ABS 311 with 8–12 wt% phosphorus-based FR masterbatch. The exact loading depends on whether the final article must meet UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm. For natural-colour BMS brackets, 0.2–0.4 wt% mold release and 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant package are used. Downstream production is conducted on electric injection-molding machines with closed-loop melt-pressure control and balanced hot-runner manifolds maintained to ±1 °C to avoid local overheating. Mold temperature is held at 70–90 °C, and filling time for 2.0 mm nominal walls is kept under 1.5 s to prevent jetting and flow marks. Some battery-module programs anneal parts at 120 °C for 30 min to relax molded-in stress when post-molding dimensional tolerance is below 0.05 mm across a 300 mm span. Published data for PC/ABS 311 in 400 V pack-level fire propagation testing is limited; final validation must use the supplier’s UL Yellow Card and the pack manufacturer’s abuse test protocol. Terminal product types include 48 V battery-management system carrier plates, cell-supervision circuit housings, low-voltage junction box lids, and module-end insulation shields.

Does Dielectric Strength Remain Stable After 1,000 Hours of Humid Aging?

The answer is process-dependent. For information technology and consumer electronics enclosures, PC/ABS 311 at 1.5–2.0 mm wall thickness is evaluated under IEC 62368-1, UL 94, IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire ignition at 650 °C to 850 °C, IEC 60112 for comparative tracking index, and ASTM D257 for volume and surface resistivity. Humid aging is conducted at 85 °C / 85% RH for 1,000 h; for well-dried unfilled PC/ABS moulded below 270 °C without hydrolytic degradation, dielectric strength by IEC 60243-1 typically remains at or above 18 kV/mm. Grade-specific PC/ABS 311 data for this configuration are not published in a form that can be cited here; the value is a generic unfilled PC/ABS range and must be verified on first-article parts. Addition ratio: for standard HB-rated enclosures, the formula is 99.5 wt% PC/ABS 311 with 0.2–0.3 wt% demolding agent and 0.1–0.2 wt% processing stabiliser. For UL 94 V-0 power adapter enclosures, 85–90 wt% PC/ABS 311 is combined with 10–15 wt% phosphorus-based flame retardant; flow length declines by 10–20% relative to neat resin. Downstream process: thin-wall enclosures are molded on high-speed machines with accumulator-assisted injection. Melt temperature is 255–270 °C, mold temperature is 60–80 °C, and barrel residence time is limited to <5 min. Recycled material above 20 wt% shortens the permissible residence time further. Post-molding annealing at 80 °C for 1 h is used only for parts receiving secondary machining, ultrasonic welding, or metal insert staking. Amine-based additives must be avoided in this segment because they can accelerate polycarbonate chain scission at processing temperatures. Terminal product types include desktop power adapter housings, router and modem enclosures, PLC controller shells, and smart meter terminal covers.

When Washing Machine Control Panels Are Molded from PC/ABS 311 Instead of Neat ABS

Replacement of neat ABS with PC/ABS 311 in control panel cosmetics changes warp correction and gloss stability, not merely impact strength. Compliance is handled under IEC 60335-1 for household electrical safety, UL 94 HB for external plastic parts not in direct contact with uninsulated live parts, and glow-wire testing per IEC 60695-2-11 at 650 °C or 750 °C depending on the terminal location and monitoring position. Addition ratio: the panel formulation uses 98.8–99.5 wt% PC/ABS 311, 0.2–0.4 wt% mold release, 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant, and 0.1–0.3 wt% antistatic agent when the panel frames a capacitive touch assembly. For high-gloss white and light colours, 2–4 wt% masterbatch is added; masterbatch levels above 4 wt% can shift melt volume-flow rate by 10–15% as measured by ISO 1133-1:2022. The downstream process uses a mirror-polished tool with surface finish SPI-A1 or SPI-A2. Melt temperature is set at 250–265 °C, mold temperature at 75–85 °C. Differential shrinkage at rib intersections behind the panel face is the primary process conflict: rib root sink marks become visible when local depression exceeds 0.03 mm. Tooling corrections require rib thickness below 50% of nominal wall, gas counterpressure, or sequential packing with short-shot control. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h is mandatory before molding; moisture above 0.02% produces silver streaks on gloss surfaces and lowers weld strength at button holes. Terminal product types include washing machine main control panels, dryer front panels, dishwasher top console trim, and refrigerator door end caps.

In portable electric and pneumatic tool housings, repeated drop impact and chemical exposure from lubricants occur simultaneously, placing PC/ABS alloys in a high-abuse segment. Compliance is anchored to IEC 62841-1 and EN 60745-1 for hand-held motor-operated tools, UL 94 HB for external housing flammability, and IEC 60068-2-75 for impact severity. Addition ratio: for drill and grinder bodies, PC/ABS 311 is used at 97.5–99.0 wt% with 0.2–0.4 wt% mold release, 0.2–0.4 wt% antioxidant package, and 1–2 wt% colour masterbatch for high-visibility or dark tool housings. Soft-touch overmoulding requires the PC/ABS substrate to be moulded first; TPE overmoulding is then run at 190–220 °C melt temperature while the substrate surface remains above 60 °C. Downstream production includes gas-assisted injection for hollow handles and structural foam ribs on machines with clamping force from 350 to 650 t for multi-cavity tools. Melt temperature is 255–270 °C, mold temperature 60–80 °C. The main process conflict is chemical stress cracking: mineral oil and lithium grease exposure after molding causes microcracks if molded-in stress exceeds approximately 12 MPa as estimated by strain recovery or solvent immersion screening under ISO 22088-3. Grade-specific environmental stress cracking data for PC/ABS 311 should be determined on the final tool because part geometry alters local stress. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h is required to avoid splay in thick bosses and recessed screw openings. Terminal product types include cordless drill housing halves, angle grinder gear casing covers, pneumatic nailer bodies, and orbital sander bottom plates.

Molding Thin-Wall 5G Small Cell Housings Below 1.5 mm

Thin-wall 5G small cell and WiFi access point enclosures require high-flow PC/ABS with tight post-mold flatness for antenna plane alignment. Compliance is verified under IEC 62368-1 for information technology equipment, UL 94 V-0 at 1.0–1.5 mm when the internal power supply is enclosed without a metal liner, and IEC 60695-2-12 glow-wire flammability for unattended equipment. Addition ratio: for UL 94 V-0 at 1.2 mm, 84–88 wt% PC/ABS 311 is blended with 12–16 wt% phosphate-based FR masterbatch and 0.2–0.4 wt% mold release. At that additive loading, melt volume-flow rate typically drops by 15–25% compared with neat resin; published data for this specific grade and masterbatch combination are limited, so an ISO 1133-1:2022 spiral-flow evaluation is required before tool construction. Downstream process: the housing is molded in a multi-cavity hot-runner tool with valve-gate sequencing to avoid weld lines on the antenna window. Melt temperature 260–275 °C, mold temperature 70–85 °C, injection velocity 150–250 mm/s. Filling time for 1.2 mm nominal wall must remain below 0.8 s; longer filling produces uneven gloss and surface delamination at gate areas. Flatness after ejection is controlled by cooling time 20–35 s and post-molding fixturing. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4–6 h to <0.02% moisture is mandatory because thin-wall filling amplifies moisture-related splay and polymer degradation near the hot runner. Terminal product types include indoor 5G small cell enclosures, WiFi 6 access point housings, optical network terminal front covers, and wall-mounted network switch brackets.

Within non-patient-contact diagnostic and imaging equipment, PC/ABS alloys occupy a lower-volume but specification-heavy segment. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 60601-1 for medical electrical equipment, ISO 14971 for risk management, and IEC 60601-1-11 when the device is intended for home use. If the enclosure can be touched by patients or clinicians, material biocompatibility is ordinarily assessed by ISO 10993-5 cytocompatibility and ISO 10993-10 skin sensitization and irritation, but grade-specific certification for PC/ABS 311 must be obtained separately because this document cannot substitute for device-level testing. Addition ratio: for diagnostic cart structural shells, PC/ABS 311 is compounded with 0.2–0.4 wt% mold release, 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant, and 0.2–0.5 wt% UV stabiliser for display-adjacent parts; flame-retardant versions for power-supply enclosures use 88–92 wt% PC/ABS 311 with 8–12 wt% phosphorus-based FR masterbatch. Downstream production is injection molding on machines dedicated to clean-room-compatible production with restricted mould-release agents. Barrel purging between grades is required to avoid silicone contamination. Melt temperature is 250–270 °C, mold temperature 70–90 °C. Parts intended for repeated disinfection with isopropanol or quaternary ammonium compounds must be annealed at 80 °C for 1 h, because residual molded-in stress above 10 MPa causes environmental stress cracking in isopropanol immersion tests. Published data for PC/ABS 311 after repeated disinfectant exposure is limited; a chemical compatibility test programme under the intended cleaning agent is required. Terminal product types include ultrasound monitor bezels, diagnostic cart column covers, blood analyser front frames, and patient monitor rear housings.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Guangdong Wanxi PC/ABS 311 is a polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied for injection-moulded technical parts in automotive, electrical, and appliance applications. The designation 311 is a manufacturer-specific grade identifier; no independent public datasheet was available for this review. Numerical ranges presented below are representative of unfilled, medium-flow PC/ABS alloys validated under the cited ISO methods and are not a substitute for lot-specific certificates from Guangdong Wanxi. If a processing window is being locked for production tooling, melt viscosity and impact data must be confirmed on the actual lot.

What Is Supplied Under the 311 Designation?

PC/ABS 311 is composed of a bisphenol-A polycarbonate continuous phase and a dispersed acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene graft-copolymer phase. The polycarbonate phase contributes heat resistance, tensile strength, and ductile fracture behaviour; the ABS phase lowers melt viscosity, reduces notch sensitivity, and improves melt processability. Typical PC/ABS alloys in this segment contain 40–70 wt% polycarbonate and 30–60 wt% ABS, with rubber content in the ABS phase being the primary driver of low-temperature impact. The exact phase ratio for 311 is proprietary. Relevant CAS registry numbers are 25037-45-0 for bisphenol-A polycarbonate and 9003-56-9 for ABS.

Representative physical and mechanical values for unfilled medium-flow PC/ABS grades are density 1.10–1.14 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183-1:2019, melt volume-flow rate 12–22 cm³/10 min at 260 °C/5 kg according to ISO 1133-1:2022, tensile yield stress 52–58 MPa according to ISO 527-2, flexural modulus 2,200–2,600 MPa according to ISO 178:2019, notched Charpy impact at 23 °C of 40–60 kJ/m² according to ISO 179-1:2023, and heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa of 105–118 °C according to ISO 75-2:2013. Typical mould shrinkage parallel and perpendicular is 0.4–0.7% per ISO 294-4:2018.

Usage is concentrated in thin-wall enclosures, instrument panel retainers, electronic housings, and structural interior parts where the design requires impact resistance, moderate heat tolerance, and lower melt viscosity than neat polycarbonate. The grade is processed by injection moulding; extrusion sheet and profile are possible only if the supplier’s rheology data permits a wider processing window. PC/ABS 311 is not intended for continuous hot-water contact above 60 °C, strong oxidizing acids, aromatic solvents, or prolonged outdoor ultraviolet exposure unless UV-stabilised or painted. Direct food-contact suitability must be verified under EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1580; the base grade is not automatically compliant.

Thermal Degradation Mechanisms in the Polycarbonate Phase During High-Shear Processing

Thermal processing boundaries for unfilled PC/ABS are governed by two competing mechanisms: polycarbonate hydrolysis at high temperature in the presence of moisture and thermo-oxidative degradation of the butadiene rubber in the ABS phase. At melt temperatures above 300 °C, polycarbonate chains undergo Fries rearrangement, releasing bisphenol-A and lowering molecular weight. In a screw barrel with wet pellets, hydrolysis produces carbon dioxide, surface splay, and molecular weight loss at temperatures as low as 250 °C if moisture is not controlled. Production-scale injection moulding trials typically use a reverse temperature profile with feed zone 230–250 °C, compression zone 250–270 °C, metering zone 260–280 °C, and nozzle 255–275 °C.

Melt temperature measured by an insertion thermocouple is maintained between 250 °C and 280 °C. Residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 5–8 min at the upper limit; shot volume should occupy 30–50% of the barrel to avoid stagnant material in the compression zone. If cycle interruption exceeds 5 min, the barrel should be purged with a suitable medium-viscosity purging compound. Gate shear rates in unfilled PC/ABS should be limited to approximately 50,000 s⁻¹; higher values are associated with jetting, gate blush, and reduction in impact strength at weld lines. Die swell and melt fracture are less common than in polyolefins but can occur at nozzle shear rates above 100,000 s⁻¹.

Injection moulding lines with clamp force below 0.35 metric tons per cm² of projected area often experience flash or inadequate packing when running PC/ABS 311 with wall sections thinner than 1.5 mm. For a typical part footprint of 100 cm², a machine with at least 35 metric tons clamping force is used. Mould temperature is normally held at 60–90 °C, with 100 °C used when surface gloss or dimensional stability is critical. Hot-runner manifolds should be externally heated with uniform temperature control of ±2 °C across nozzles; cold-runner direct gates should be tangentially connected to reduce flow marks.

Tooling for PC/ABS 311 should use chrome-plated or stainless mould inserts to resist corrosion from trace acetic acid formed during melt processing. Vent depth at the parting line should be 0.02–0.03 mm because PC/ABS has lower melt elasticity and flash is more likely at deeper vents. Ejector pins and moving cores should be hardened to 50 HRC and polished to 0.2 µm Ra to reduce stick-slip. Weld-line strength in PC/ABS is retained better than in glass-filled materials, but at melt temperatures above 280 °C and mould temperatures below 60 °C, knit-line impact can fall below 50% of nominal.

When High Humidity Alters Drying Requirements Before Hopper Loading

PC/ABS 311 absorbs moisture quickly. In a plant at 60% relative humidity and 25 °C, the polycarbonate phase can reach surface moisture levels that produce visible hydrolysis within 30–60 min of open-hopper exposure. Drying is therefore mandatory, not optional. A desiccant dryer with dew point ≤ −30 °C, air temperature 80–100 °C, and drying time 3–4 h is standard. Dried material should be transferred through dry-air take-off lines or sealed hoppers; otherwise moisture regain can occur before the melt stream reaches the barrel.

Target moisture content by Karl Fischer titration under ISO 15512:2019 is ≤0.02 wt%. At 0.04 wt% moisture, injection-moulded plaques typically show silver streaks and reduced tensile elongation. At 0.08 wt%, surface delamination and embrittlement are commonly observed. Dryer temperature above 110 °C should be avoided because pellet surface tack can cause hopper bridging and agglomeration.

When Selecting Between 311, Neat PC, and High-Flow PC/ABS Grades

Choice between PC/ABS 311, neat PC, and ABS is determined by heat deflection temperature, melt viscosity, and low-temperature impact. Neat PC provides heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa of 125–135 °C but requires higher melt temperature and higher mould temperature; it is also more notch-sensitive in thick sections. ABS provides lower density and cost but heat deflection temperature is often below 95 °C and low-temperature impact falls sharply below 0 °C. PC/ABS 311 occupies a middle position: lower viscosity than neat PC, higher heat deflection temperature than ABS, and higher notched impact than high-flow PC/ABS alternatives, but it must be dried and is less resistant to outdoor weathering than PC/ASA.

Within the PC/ABS family, high-flow grades with melt volume-flow rate above 25 cm³/10 min at 260 °C/5 kg permit thin-wall filling but typically lose 20–40% notched impact and 5–15 °C heat deflection temperature relative to medium-flow grades. Low-flow grades retain impact and heat resistance but require 15–25% higher injection pressure and may produce higher residual stress in large flat parts. The 311 designation is discussed as a medium-flow grade; actual melt-flow position must be confirmed from the lot certificate because published independent data for this specific configuration is limited.

PC/ABS 311 also differs from PC/PBT blends in that PC/PBT reduces drying burden and improves resistance to fuels and solvents, but tensile modulus and low-temperature notched impact are generally lower. Compared with PC/ASA, PC/ABS 311 offers similar heat resistance but inferior UV retention; unpainted exterior parts are therefore usually assigned to PC/ASA or weather-resistant grades. These substitutions are process-dependent: replacement of a PC/ABS part with PC/ASA may require a 5–10 °C higher melt temperature and a mould temperature increase to maintain surface gloss.

Application environments for Guangdong Wanxi PC/ABS 311 include automotive interior lower trim, instrument panel retainers, electronics enclosures, power-tool housings, and appliance structural parts. The material selection is justified when a component requires notched impact resistance at 0 °C of at least 30 kJ/m² and a heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa above 100 °C, but where neat polycarbonate would require excessive clamping force or drying. For continuous outdoor ultraviolet exposure, a UV-stabilised PC/ASA or painted surface is required. For open-flame contact, an FR version with a UL 94 V-0 listing at the specified wall thickness must be selected; 311 should be assumed HB unless supplier documentation states otherwise.

Exposure to toluene, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, or brake fluid causes environmental stress cracking in PC/ABS. PC/ABS 311 has improved resistance relative to neat PC but not immunity. For components in contact with cleaning agents, testing under ISO 22088-3 with production strain jigs is required. Grade 311 is assumed non-flame-retardant unless the supplier provides a UL 94 Yellow Card. For electrical enclosures requiring V-0 at 1.5 mm, a halogen-free FR PC/ABS with organophosphate package is generally selected, but that increases density and lowers heat deflection temperature.

Lot qualification for PC/ABS 311 typically includes moisture content by ISO 15512:2019, melt volume-flow rate by ISO 1133-1:2022, notched Charpy impact by ISO 179-1:2023, and heat deflection temperature by ISO 75-2:2013. A shift in melt volume-flow rate of more than ±15% from the validated baseline requires adjustment of melt temperature or injection velocity; a shift of more than ±25% should trigger contamination or blend-inconsistency testing. PC/ABS 311 must not be combined with polyamide or polyethylene terephthalate in recycling streams because transesterification and acid–base reactions degrade the polycarbonate phase.
