Application of FuJian HuaSu PC/ABS HS5314

On medium-to-large automotive interior lower trim carriers moulded from PC/ABS HS5314, the first processing control is residual moisture. The polycarbonate phase undergoes hydrolysis at melt temperatures above 240 °C when the moisture content exceeds 0.02 %; Karl Fischer titration per ISO 15512:2019 should be used for incoming granulate verification. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of −40 °C and air flow of 1.5–2.0 m³/h per kg/h throughput is required. Drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h from sealed bags, or 100 °C for 2–3 h if exposed to ambient air above 60 % relative humidity, brings the granulate below 0.02 %. On a 320 t hydraulic injection moulding machine with a screw diameter of 80 mm, the barrel profile from feed to nozzle is typically set at 230 °C, 250 °C, 260 °C, 265 °C, and 265 °C. The shot size should be kept between 40 % and 70 % of the rated barrel capacity to limit residence time; at full melt temperature, the maximum allowable residence time is 5–6 min. Screw rotation speed of 40–80 rpm and back pressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa are applied to homogenise the alloy without excessive shear. Injection speed is profiled from 30–60 mm/s during mould filling to 10–20 mm/s at the packing transition. A melt cushion of 2–5 mm is maintained at the screw tip to provide stable holding pressure. For a carrier plate with a wall thickness of 2.5–3.0 mm and flow length 400–500 mm, the mould temperature is held at 70–90 °C by a water-circulating unit. If the tool temperature falls below 60 °C, weld lines at the boss bases exhibit brittle fracture; if it exceeds 100 °C, cycle time lengthens beyond 45 s without proportionate improvement in impact. Sequential valve-gate controllers with opening delays of 0.3–0.8 s shift the weld line to low-load rib intersections. Gas counterpressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa during filling has been used in production tools to raise the mould surface gloss and delay premature freeze-off at the flow front. After demoulding, parts should be stored in a dry indoor environment; residual internal stress can be checked by immersion in 10 % glacial acetic acid for 2 min or by solvent stress-crack testing per ASTM D543. If stress whitening appears in the gate region, the holding time should be increased by 0.5–1.0 s and the mould temperature raised by 5 °C. For automotive interior compliance, fogging and volatile emission testing is frequently performed to DIN 75201 or VDA 278; if the moulding is to be painted, flame or plasma surface pre-treatment may be necessary. Grade-specific emission values must be confirmed against Fujian HuaSu lot certification.

What limits weld-line strength in thin-wall laptop frames and monitor bezels?

Thin-wall IT enclosures moulded from HS5314 frequently fail at the weld line if the gate layout permits a cool flow front to converge at a snap-fit root or screw boss. For nominal wall thickness of 1.0–1.5 mm and flow path lengths above 250 mm, the processing window narrows because the material must be moulded at a melt temperature high enough to reduce viscosity but low enough to prevent degradation. MVR of the lot, measured per ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C/5 kg, should be obtained from the certificate of analysis; unfilled high-flow PC/ABS grades in this class generally operate at the upper melt temperature range of 260–280 °C. The mould temperature should be 80–100 °C to preserve impact strength at weld-line intersections. A fast injection speed of 60–120 mm/s is used to reduce the frozen-layer thickness and increase melt pressure transmission. If the speed exceeds 150 mm/s at a gate land diameter below 1.0 mm, shear heating at the gate can exceed 300 °C locally, leading to silver streaks and burnt marks. Gate shear rate should be kept below 50,000 s⁻¹ for unreinforced PC/ABS; for wall thickness 1.0 mm, the gate diameter should be at least 0.8–1.0 mm, and for 1.5 mm walls at least 1.2–1.5 mm. Weld lines in thin-wall laptop frames are evaluated by impact testing on notched bars cut perpendicular to the weld line. In production, the measured Charpy notched impact at a weld line can be 30–50 % lower than un-welded material. To compensate, the holding pressure should be 60–80 MPa and holding time 3–6 s, with the switching point set by screw position rather than time. If the weld line remains on a visible surface, the gate positions are changed to move it into a rib base or snap-fit feature. Dimensional stability after moulding is influenced by post-mould shrinkage. ISO 294-4 tests on 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaques can be used to measure processing shrinkage; in thin-wall sections, the in-flow shrinkage is typically 0.3–0.5 % and cross-flow 0.5–0.7 % for unfilled PC/ABS. These values must be corrected for the actual grade because pigment and regrind content shift the shrinkage. Regrind use should not exceed 20 % by mass in visible thin-wall IT parts; higher percentages increase the risk of black specks and lower notched impact. For electrostatic discharge protection in electronic device frames, the grade must be evaluated against IEC 61340-5-1 if carbon-filled or antistatic masterbatch is added. HS5314 is unfilled; any ESD performance requires a separate compounded variant or moulded-in coating, and published data for this specific configuration is limited.

When sequential valve gating replaces direct sprue gating in large-format appliance housings

In large-format appliance tools, a single direct sprue is often replaced with sequential valve gating to control weld-line placement, but the change alters pressure-loss profile and knit-line temperature. For air conditioner front panels, washing machine control housings, or refrigerator display surrounds moulded from HS5314, the hot-runner manifold is maintained at 260–270 °C and the nozzle at 270–280 °C to keep the melt flow-front velocity at 200–400 mm/s in a 2.0–2.5 mm cavity. Lower velocity causes visible flow marks and incomplete replication of micro-texture; higher velocity can trap air at the end of fill if the vents are less than 0.02–0.03 mm deep. Venting on large-format tools is cut at the parting line with a land length of 1.0–2.0 mm and a relief depth of 0.03 mm to prevent burn marks. The valve-gate opening sequence is controlled by cavity pressure sensors at each gate; typical delay between adjacent gates is 0.5–1.0 s. If the first gate opens too early, the material cools at the rib intersections and produces weak knit lines. The holding phase is also asymmetric: gates near the last-filled regions are held 1–2 s longer than the first gate. The mould temperature is 75–90 °C and is maintained by separate cooling circuits on the fixed and moving halves; the temperature difference between core and cavity should not exceed 10 °C to avoid warpage. Cooling time for a 2.5 mm wall is generally 15–25 s. If cooling time is insufficient, the part may shrink by an additional 0.1 % in the gate area and produce a sink mark visible through a painted surface. Sink marks can be minimised by gas-assisted moulding, but HS5314 is not a chemical blowing agent grade. A production-scale workaround is to set a two-step packing profile: 60–80 MPa for 2 s, dropping to 20–30 MPa for 5–8 s. For large flat panels, warpage after demoulding is checked on a granite plate; flatness tolerances of 0.5 mm over 500 mm are common. If the part must pass a heat-soak test at 80 °C for 2 h, it is annealed at 90 °C for 1 h before dimensional inspection. Annealing can reduce internal stress but may increase post-mould shrinkage by 0.1–0.2 %. Large appliance housings also require creep resistance under constant load; for unfilled PC/ABS, the tensile creep modulus at 1,000 h is substantially lower than the short-term tensile modulus, so the part should not be used as a structural load-bearing frame without ribbing. Grade-specific creep data for HS5314 should be obtained from Fujian HuaSu technical service.

Power tool enclosures introduce a conflict between low-temperature impact and chemical resistance to gear lubricants. When moulding HS5314 for portable drill housings or angle grinder motor casings, the wall thickness varies from 2.0 mm in the main shell to 4.0 mm at the handle base and gear seat. The material is usually processed at a melt temperature of 250–270 °C and a mould temperature of 70–85 °C. The injection speed is kept at 40–70 mm/s to prevent gas trapping in the deep draw of the motor housing. A slow final fill of 10–20 mm/s is used at the end of stroke to prevent overpacking. Housings must survive drop impact tests; the impact strength of PC/ABS is sensitive to wall thickness and mould temperature. If the mould temperature is below 60 °C, the outer skin freezes quickly and the notched Charpy impact measured per ISO 179-1/1eA can fall by 20–35 % compared with parts moulded at 80 °C. The gate should be placed in a non-appearance area, such as the tool body underside or the air inlet slot, because a gate scar can initiate crack growth under repeated vibration. Screw bosses for self-tapping screws require a boss outer diameter of 2.0–2.5 times the screw diameter and a boss wall of 1.5–2.0 mm to avoid sink marks and stripped threads. If the grade is assembled in contact with polyamide gears or elastomeric seals, the assembly must be checked for environmental stress cracking resistance after exposure to common greases. PC/ABS is attacked by aromatic hydrocarbons and ketones; the housing should be sealed or the grease should be a lithium soap mineral oil type. For impact-modified power tool housings, the difference in failure mode between ductile and brittle fracture can be detected by instrumented falling dart impact test per ISO 6603-2. The test should be performed at −20 °C, 0 °C, and 23 °C to determine the ductile-to-brittle transition. Published data for this specific grade under power tool vibration is limited; production validation requires trial runs on the actual tool.

When HS5314 is used in diagnostic analyser housings, bedside monitoring device shells, or laboratory instrument covers, the regulatory boundary is driven by electrical safety and cleaning-agent exposure rather than long-term implant biocompatibility. The housing must typically pass IEC 60601-1 as part of the finished medical electrical equipment, with flame classification according to the equipment’s end-use. The material alone cannot carry a medical device claim; the moulder and OEM must qualify the finished housing. PC/ABS in this application should be dried to residual moisture below 0.02 % and processed with a mould temperature of 80–90 °C to achieve high surface quality and low internal stress. After moulding, the housing may be cleaned with diluted isopropanol solutions below 70 % concentration; repeated wiping with strong ketones such as acetone can induce environmental stress cracking in the polycarbonate phase. Hydrogen peroxide or quaternary ammonium disinfectants are generally less aggressive but should be tested for the specific grade and pigment package. Grade-specific chemical resistance should be evaluated by ISO 22088-3 bent-strip method or ASTM D543 immersion testing for 24 h at the intended use temperature. If the housing requires UL recognition, the moulding compound must be evaluated at the minimum wall thickness in the final colour; a UL Yellow Card is issued only for the specific grade and thickness tested. The use of colourants, impact modifiers, or regrind can alter the flame class. For laboratory instruments with internal heat sources, the heat deflection temperature is measured per ISO 75-2 at 1.8 MPa; unfilled PC/ABS typically exhibits HDT values below 110 °C, so the housing should not be placed in continuous contact with surfaces exceeding 90 °C. Published data for HS5314 under repeated hospital-grade disinfectants is limited; medical OEMs must run compatibility studies on the finished enclosure.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

FuJian HuaSu PC/ABS HS5314 is an unreinforced polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied for injection moulding where controlled melt-flow and low-temperature ductility are required in thin-section components. The grade is supplied as pellets in sealed moisture-barrier packaging; handling prior to moulding must limit moisture uptake above 0.02 % by weight, as determined by ISO 15512:2019 Method B. Pre-drying in a dehumidifying hopper dryer is mandatory at 80 °C to 90 °C for 3 h to 4 h, with drying-air dew point maintained below −30 °C. Residual moisture above the specified threshold causes splay, silver streaking, and measurable loss of impact resistance because hydrolysis cleaves polycarbonate segments during plastication. Regrind addition above 15 % by weight is not recommended without validation of impact retention and melt-flow stability against virgin pellet baseline data. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the processing and property ranges that follow are derived from publicly available industrial data for unfilled PC/ABS alloys of similar flow classification and are not a substitute for lot-specific certification values.

What Nozzle Temperatures and Screw Parameters Maintain Melt Homogeneity?

Melt temperature measured at the nozzle should be held between 240 °C and 270 °C, with rear zone temperature from 220 °C to 230 °C, middle zone from 240 °C to 250 °C, and front zone from 250 °C to 260 °C. Mould wall temperature is controlled at 60 °C to 80 °C; the upper end reduces flow-mark depth on high-gloss surfaces but increases cycle time. Screw speed on a reciprocating screw with L/D 20:1 to 24:1 should be limited to 80 min⁻¹ to 120 min⁻¹. Back pressure is set between 5 bar and 15 bar depending on screw diameter and metering stability. Check-ring closure must be verified; clearance above 0.05 mm produces melt-pressure fluctuation and inconsistent cushion control. Cushion should be maintained at 3 mm to 6 mm, with decompression set to 2 mm to 4 mm to avoid open-nozzle drool. On production-scale injection machines with clamp force between 800 kN and 3000 kN, the observed process limitation is generally not plastication capacity but premature gate freeze in wall sections below 1.5 mm.

Tensile property determinations on HS5314 are performed in accordance with ISO 527-2:2012 using Type 1A specimens injection-moulded to 4.0 mm thickness. For unfilled PC/ABS alloys of this melt-flow segment, tensile yield stress is typically 50 MPa to 60 MPa, elongation at yield is 4 % to 6 %, and nominal strain at break at 23 °C is greater than 50 %. Flexural modulus determined by ISO 178:2019 at 2 mm/min falls between 2200 MPa and 2600 MPa, while flexural strength ranges from 70 MPa to 90 MPa. Notched Izod impact strength tested to ISO 180:2023 with Type A notch at 23 °C is in the range 45 kJ/m² to 65 kJ/m²; at −30 °C the value decreases to 30 kJ/m² to 45 kJ/m². Heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa load by ISO 75-2:2013 Method A is between 95 °C and 105 °C for 80 mm × 10 mm × 4 mm edgewise specimens, while Vicat softening temperature by ISO 306:2022 Method B50 is between 120 °C and 130 °C. Melt volume-flow rate determined by ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C with 5.0 kg load is within 12 cm³/10 min to 25 cm³/10 min for the medium-flow segment. This positions HS5314 between high-flow grades selected for very thin-wall parts and low-flow grades selected for deep-draw or high-abuse automotive components.

Chemical Resistance and Environmental Stress Cracking Boundaries in PC/ABS Housings

Unmodified PC/ABS alloys are susceptible to environmental stress cracking when moulded-in tensile stress exceeds approximately 10 MPa in the presence of aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, or certain plasticisers. Continuous contact with toluene, xylene, or methyl ethyl ketone is not recommended; craze initiation may occur within 24 h under applied strain. Resistance is acceptable for short-term contact with weak acids at pH 3 to 11, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and water/ethylene glycol mixtures up to 60 °C. Screening for environmental stress cracking should follow ISO 22088-2:2006 using the ball/ring method on specimens with controlled residual stress. Adhesive systems containing free amines require screening because polycarbonate segments can undergo aminolysis at stress-concentrated locations. Outdoor use without ultraviolet stabilisation is not recommended for unpigmented grades because yellowing and surface microcracking occur under accelerated weathering conditions; accelerated weathering testing should follow ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1, method A, with lot-specific colour-change limits agreed between moulder and end user.

Electronic control housings and automotive interior trim are the principal processing targets for HS5314. Moulded parts with wall thickness from 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm are typical for enclosure covers where flow length-to-wall-thickness ratio should not exceed 150:1 without flow simulation. In automotive interior brackets and glove box retainers, the medium-flow balance and low-temperature impact retention are used to reduce brittle fracture risk during airbag deployment at −30 °C. In electrical enclosures evaluated under IEC 62368-1:2023, comparative tracking index and glow-wire performance are not grade-inherent properties; testing must be performed on the finished assembly unless the supplier explicitly certifies UL 94 classification and CTI values in the certificate of compliance. Published data for this specific configuration is limited for end-use electromagnetic shielding, paint adhesion, and laser-marking contrast; each of these secondary operations must be validated on production-moulded plaques because flow-induced skin orientation and release-agent residue can alter surface energy.

When Thin-Wall Moulding Requires Reduced Packing Pressure

For a medium-flow PC/ABS at 260 °C, apparent shear viscosity measured by capillary rheometry according to ISO 11443:2021 at 1000 s⁻¹ is typically 120 Pa·s to 180 Pa·s; at 5000 s⁻¹ the apparent shear viscosity falls to 30 Pa·s to 50 Pa·s. This shear-thinning response permits filling of wall sections from 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm with injection pressures below 120 MPa on machines with screw diameters from 25 mm to 35 mm. Cavity pressure at switchover should be between 40 MPa and 60 MPa, with pack pressure set at 60 % to 80 % of peak injection pressure. Hold time is based on gate-seal time determined by freeze-off testing, not by pvT transition commands used for semicrystalline materials. Vent depth below 0.02 mm at the end of fill produces burn marks and short-shot variation; vent land length should be 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm. Gas counterpressure or sequential valve gating reduces weld-line depth when part mass exceeds 1.5 kg; for smaller components, conventional cold-runner tooling is normally sufficient.

Compliance documentation for HS5314 should be requested as a lot-specific certificate covering the following test methods and regulatory references. The matrix below is a verification checklist, not a statement of certified performance for any unpurchased production lot.
