Application of Formosa Plastics HDPE TAISOX 7200

Industrial container blow moulding consumes the largest share of Formosa Plastics HDPE TAISOX 7200 on production lines configured with high-output single-station shuttles and extruder diameters from 80 mm to 120 mm. The grade is extruded at a head temperature of 190–210°C, a die temperature of 180–200°C, and a mould temperature of 8–30°C; these zones are held within ±3°C on lines running tight-head containers. Screw L/D ratios of 24:1 to 28:1 with barrier mixing sections provide sufficient homogenization for 45–65 kg/h outputs on a single head. Parison programming is set to increase wall thickness at the pinch-off seam and at the shoulder of the finished article; in a tight-head drum, the corner wall distribution is maintained above 2.0 mm unless the customer specification requires a heavier truck-discard gauge. Blow pressure measured downstream of the blow pin falls between 0.55 MPa and 0.75 MPa. Calibration is performed with an internal blow pin and a water-cooled neck ring; thick-walled containers require blow time between 60 seconds and 120 seconds to reduce post-mould warpage. Outdoor-storage black lots are coloured with carbon black polyethylene masterbatch at 1.5–3.0 wt%; natural lots for technical industrial products run without the black masterbatch. Regrind ratio in non-food industrial containers is held at 10–30 wt% of the total shot weight; higher fractions reduce pinch-weld elongation and require a corresponding increase in extrusion temperature. Finished articles must meet UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.1 drop, leakproofness, and stack tests; where the assigned packing group requires a 1.8 m drop at -18°C, the critical failure zone is the pinch seam. Tear-down of the pinch region is unacceptable if the weld-line thickness falls below 80% of the nominal sidewall. Incoming resin QC records melt mass-flow rate according to ASTM D1238-20 and density according to ASTM D1505-18; a shift in MFR outside the certificate-of-analysis window alters parison hang time on the same feed-throat setting. Pellets stored in outdoor silos at RH above 60% should pass through a hopper heater at 60°C to remove surface condensation, because trapped water produces surface splay although the polymer does not hydrolyze.

What Limits Barrier-Wall Thickness in Coextruded Fuel Tank Tooling?

In six-layer coextrusion tooling, the structural substrate is HDPE and the barrier layer is EVOH or polyamide. Formosa Plastics HDPE TAISOX 7200 forms the outer and inner skins; the core layers are proportioned by weight at the die head. A common starting layer distribution is 85–90 wt% HDPE outer and inner skins, 3–5 wt% EVOH barrier, and 3–5 wt% combined adhesive tie layers; regrind is included in the HDPE skins and withheld from the barrier layers. Outer skin thickness is held above 1.0 mm after pinching to prevent delamination through the multi-layer pinch seam. Die head temperatures are set from 205°C to 230°C because EVOH thermal degradation accelerates at higher hold-up temperature; the HDPE layer remains below 235°C at the accumulator head. Blow moulding machines for 45–75 L fuel tanks require clamp force above 100 t and a 30-minute die-purging sequence when switching from monolayer drums to six-layer tooling. The parison programmer compensates for differential layer viscosity; this is verified by sectioning the moulded tank and measuring layer uniformity with an optical microscope at nine grid points. Hydrocarbon permeation is assessed by the vehicle-level sealed housing evaporative determination procedure required under 40 CFR Part 86 or by the OEM tank-level gravimetric method; published data for this specific TAISOX 7200 configuration is limited at tank level, so converter trials must establish the permeation curve. The pinch weld becomes the failure initiation zone when tie-layer thickness falls below 0.05 mm or when melt temperature drops below 190°C, causing incomplete interlayer adhesion. Regrind use in fuel tanks is normally limited to 20–30 wt% of the HDPE skin because higher incorporation shifts the weld-line elongation at break under ASTM D638-14.

For agrochemical packaging, the acceptance criteria move from short-term mechanical strength to environmental stress crack resistance and organic solvent permeation. Containers for emulsifiable concentrates and ester-based solvents are produced with TAISOX 7200 because the copolymer structure allows stress relaxation, but material selection cannot proceed without an ASTM D1693-15 bent-strip ESCR test in the packaged formulation at 50°C. The standard test liquid is Igepal CO-630; compatibility with the commercial adjuvant system must be confirmed separately. Typical container designs are 1 L, 5 L, 10 L, and 20 L narrow-mouth bottles with a neck finish conforming to EN 12712 or the OEM neck specification. Wall thickness ranges from 1.0 mm for 1 L to 2.5 mm for 20 L. Extrusion temperature is held at 185–200°C at the die, and the mould is cooled to 5–12°C to shorten cycle time without creating crystallinity gradients. Carbon black masterbatch is added at 2.0–3.0 wt% when the container is stored in sunlight; dispersion must show no agglomerates above 15 µm under transmitted-light inspection. Finished articles are tested for column crush according to ASTM D2659-16 and for drop impact according to ASTM D2463-15 at ambient and -18°C. Cap torque retention is measured after 48 h at 40°C; if the bottle mouth ovality exceeds 0.5 mm, the capping line will reject the lot. The limiting incompatibility is with highly aggressive solvents that generate stress cracking in HDPE; no single ESCR value replaces immersion testing at the expected storage concentration and temperature.

When High-Speed Shuttle Tooling Exposes Melt Strength Limitations in 220 L Drum Production

220 L tight-head and open-top drum production uses the same grade but a different failure envelope from small jerrycans. The accumulator head must fill a 220 L shot within 40–60 seconds; if the shot time exceeds 75 seconds, the parison begins to sag under its own mass. Melt strength, not melt mass-flow rate alone, becomes the governing variable. The extruder is typically a 100 mm or 120 mm smooth-bore barrier screw with L/D 24:1 and a grooved feed section. Temperatures are kept low at 175–195°C at the die to preserve melt strength; increasing the die temperature to 210°C reduces head pressure but produces parison drawdown. Blow-pin pressure is 0.6 MPa, and the preblow sequence uses a 0.2–0.3 s delay before the mould closes. Wall thickness distribution is controlled by a 100-point parison programmer; the final sidewall is 3.5–5.0 mm. Top-load performance is tested by filling the drum with water and applying a compression force of 6,000 N for 24 h; permanent deformation must not exceed 10 mm. The bottom chime area is the most frequent failure location on high-speed lines, where insufficient pinch-off compression leaves a weld line with 70–80% of sidewall thickness. Regrind use can reach 25–35 wt% in non-UN drums; for UN certification, the maximum regrind content is set by the performance certificate and commonly remains at or below 30 wt% of the same production stream. Batch-to-batch variation in MFR outside the CoA window produces visible changes in parison hang time and must be corrected through die-gap adjustment before wall-thickness drift exceeds tolerance. The critical operational boundary is die lip temperature; exceeding 210°C sacrifices parison melt strength and increases the reject rate on 220 L drums.

In outdoor water-storage tank production, tanks from 200 L to 2,000 L are blow moulded on large accumulator heads with multi-station rotary machines. The primary specification is long-term hydrostatic stability at 60°C rather than drop impact. Density control per ASTM D1505-18 and MFR per ASTM D1238-20 are baseline incoming checks. Carbon black concentration is 2.0–2.5 wt% for UV stabilization; the black masterbatch must provide uniform dispersion under ISO 18553 to avoid ultraviolet transmission through depleted zones. Wall thickness is 4–8 mm depending on tank diameter. Process temperatures are 185–200°C; the mould opens only after internal cooling air has reduced the outer surface temperature below 60°C, otherwise the wall shrinks onto the core and creates permanent deformation. Mechanical tests include ASTM D638-14 tensile yield, ASTM D790-17 flexural modulus, and ASTM D256-23 notched Izod at -30°C. The tank must withstand a full-volume hydrostatic pressure test at 1.5× the service head for 1 hour without weeping through the pinch seam. Weathering is validated under ASTM D2565-23 Xenon arc exposure for 2,000 hours; tensile retention must exceed 70%. The limiting incompatibility is with strong oxidizing disinfectants; polyethylene tanks should not be used for sodium hypochlorite solutions above 15% active chlorine unless a fluorinated interior is specified.
