Formosa Chemicals & Fibre ABS AW5000 is introduced to the injection moulding cell through a desiccant-bed hopper dryer operating at 80 °C to 90 °C. Virgin pellet residence time at full hopper capacity is 2 h to 4 h. Residual moisture is held below 0.05 wt% as determined by ISO 15512:2019. When the material is transferred by vacuum loader, the conveying air is dried to a dew point below -20 °C. Moulded parts are conditioned at 23 °C and 50 % RH for 24 h before metrology. Processing of this resin in household appliance control panels and fascia frames requires a mould temperature of 35 °C to 60 °C and a melt temperature profile from 220 °C at the rear zone to 250 °C at the nozzle. Clamping force is calculated from the projected part area at 40 MPa to 60 MPa cavity pressure. Injection speed is set in the medium-low range to avoid jetting on textured surfaces. Holding pressure is profiled from 55 % to 75 % of peak injection pressure. Regrind content is limited to 20 wt% with granulate particle size between 6 mm and 9 mm. Colour masterbatch is dosed at 2 wt% to 4 wt% depending on opacity. Terminal components include washing-machine control panels, refrigerator door end caps, and vacuum-cleaner housing shells. Compliance for this application is evaluated under IEC 60335-1, UL 94 HB, and REACH Annex XVII restricted-substance clauses. Surface finish after demoulding is validated with a gloss meter at 60° geometry. Dimensional acceptance follows ISO 20457:2018 for moulded part tolerances. When ultrasonic welding is used on control-panel seams, the joint design uses a triangular energy director with height 0.4 mm to 0.6 mm and included angle 60° to 90°. Welding parameters require an amplitude of 30 µm to 40 µm at 20 kHz. If a V-0 enclosure classification is required, AW5000 is not selected because it is not a flame-retarded compound.
The resin is evaluated for lower interior trim parts that are not exposed to continuous temperatures above 85 °C. Fire performance is measured on a moulded plaque with thickness 2.0 mm under ISO 3795:1989 and FMVSS 302. The acceptance criterion is a horizontal burning rate below 100 mm/min for passenger vehicles. Because AW5000 is an unfilled ABS grade, flame retardancy is not intrinsic; burning rate is influenced by part thickness, colourant package, and surface texture. Interior door trim lowers, seat side covers, and glove box outer shells are injection moulded at a melt temperature of 230 °C to 250 °C and a mould temperature of 50 °C to 70 °C. The hot manifold is balanced within ±5 °C to prevent local degradation that can increase odour and fogging. When a low-gloss surface is required, the tool cavity is etched to a grain depth of 25 µm to 35 µm; gloss is measured at 85° geometry and maintained between 2.5 GU and 4.5 GU. VOC and fogging validation uses DIN 75201:2011 gravimetric fogging; if condensate exceeds 2 mg, a post-moulding thermal desorption step at 60 °C for 8 h may be required. Recycled material is limited to 15 wt% and must be free of painted kerb scrap because paint contamination degrades melt homogeneity. The terminal parts are assembled with snap-fits, and moulded-in residual stress must be controlled to avoid whitening under clip installation. Pilot runs on a 1200 kN injection moulding machine with screw diameter 40 mm and L/D 22:1 produced acceptable burning rate in unpigmented trials, but variation in pigment loading above 3 wt% shifted the result toward the 100 mm/min limit. Published data for AW5000-specific fogging and interior VOC under all colourant combinations is limited.
Router shells, set-top box faceplates, monitor rear bezels, and keyboard frames are moulded from AW5000 when the end-product safety standard IEC 62368-1:2023 permits HB-class polymeric enclosures. The melt temperature is held at 225 °C to 245 °C; the mould surface is maintained at 40 °C to 60 °C to balance gloss and shrinkage. Mould shrinkage is measured according to ISO 294-4:2018 and typically falls in the 0.4 % to 0.7 % range for unfilled ABS plates of 2.0 mm thickness. The screw metering zone is held below 240 °C to limit free styrene generation. Back pressure is set at 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa, with screw rotation 60 rpm to 90 rpm. The injection speed is profiled from 35 mm/s to 65 mm/s; a sharp velocity increase at the gate is avoided to prevent gate blush on high-gloss surfaces. Regrind content is limited to 20 wt%, and colour masterbatch is dosed at 2 wt% to 3 wt% for opaque parts. After moulding, parts may be laser-marked, pad-printed, or coated with an EMI shielding copper-nickel layer. For coated surfaces, pencil hardness is tested under ASTM D3363-20, and cross-cut adhesion is tested under ISO 2409:2020. AW5000 is not rated V-0; when the enclosure is adjacent to live parts or connectors above 50 V, a flame-retarded ABS or PC/ABS compound is required instead. This limitation defines the application boundary.
| Requirement | Reference standard | Acceptance basis |
|---|---|---|
| Product safety for ICT and audio/video | IEC 62368-1:2023 | HB enclosure permitted only where fire-enclosure clauses are met |
| Horizontal burning class | UL 94 HB | Material certification at minimum end-product wall thickness |
| Restricted substances | RoHS 2011/65/EU, REACH Annex XVII | Supplier declaration with lot-level traceability |
In toy manufacturing, construction bricks, toy vehicle bodies, doll furniture, and protective play-helmet shells are moulded from AW5000 only after the selected colour and additive package is evaluated against EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 migration limits and ASTM F963-23 soluble heavy-element limits. The injection moulding process uses a melt temperature of 210 °C to 235 °C and a mould temperature of 30 °C to 50 °C to minimise thermal degradation of organic pigments. Regrind is either excluded or restricted to 10 wt% of internally generated sprues and runners; post-industrial material from unknown sources is not allowed. The tool surface is polished to SPI A-2 or better for glossy brick surfaces. No external mould release agent is used because silicone may alter migration testing. If degreasing of the mould is required, the approved solvent is limited to a 99 % isopropanol wipe followed by dry-air purging. Finished toys are tested for small parts and sharp edges after assembly. The polymer contributes no phthalates when the supplier confirms absence of BBP, DBP, DEHP, and DIBP under REACH Annex XVII entries 51 and 52. Residual styrene monomer content in the moulded part is verified by gas chromatography against the supplier specification. A drop-tower test at -20 °C is used for play-helmet shells and thicker structural toys to evaluate brittle fracture. Published data for AW5000-specific migration results under all colourant formulations is limited.
Diagnostic cart enclosures, ultrasound console covers, and infusion pump front covers are processed from AW5000 when the part is classified as an external enclosure with no prolonged patient contact. Material selection is governed by ISO 10993-1:2018 for external contacting devices with limited contact duration, not for implant or mucosal contact. The moulding area uses cleanroom-compatible packaging and lot traceability; regrind is limited to 15 wt% and segregated by lot. Melt temperature is held at 230 °C to 250 °C; hot runner tips are thermally checked to avoid local decomposition. Mould temperature is set at 45 °C to 65 °C to stabilise outer dimensions for sheet-metal assembly. The enclosure is evaluated under IEC 60601-1 for mechanical enclosure strength and accessible-part creepage clearance. Chemical resistance is a critical processing boundary: repeated wiping with 70 % isopropanol, 0.5 % quaternary ammonium disinfectants, or 3 % hydrogen peroxide may induce environmental stress cracking in stressed ABS sections. Validation follows ISO 22088-3:2020 bent-strip method. If the clinical environment requires repeated disinfection above 70 % alcohol concentration, a polycarbonate or PC/ABS blend is substituted. This scenario is a deep-dive zone because the combination of snap-fit stress and disinfectant exposure creates a field failure mode on moulded housing tabs. Tabs are designed with a minimum radius of 0.8 mm at the base and are located away from gate high-stress regions. The injection gate is a fan gate of depth 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm to reduce molecular orientation at the tab. Process validation includes 1000 cycles of disinfection contact followed by tensile pull at 23 °C per ISO 527-1:2019. Terminal components include mobile cart housings, monitor enclosures, and non-sterile device covers. Published data for AW5000-specific disinfection compatibility is limited; qualification on stressed moulded specimens is required for each disinfectant.
Injection-moulded DWV fittings such as P-traps, cleanout plugs, and sanitary tees are an established ABS application, but grade selection is controlled by pipe-fitting standards rather than the general-purpose datasheet. The relevant specifications are ASTM D2661-21 for ABS schedule 40 DWV pipe fittings, CSA B181.1 for Canadian ABS DWV, and the third-party listing required by local plumbing codes. AW5000 should be used only after the moulder confirms the specific grade is covered by a regional certification; the general-purpose datasheet alone does not create this listing. The moulding process uses a melt temperature of 220 °C to 240 °C, a mould temperature of 40 °C to 65 °C, and a screw with L/D 20:1 to 22:1. Regrind is acceptable up to 25 wt% if generated from certified scrap. Continuous service in hot waste lines is limited by the heat deflection temperature of unfilled ABS under ASTM D648-18 at 1.82 MPa; typical unfilled ABS values remain below 95 °C, so intermittent exposure above 80 °C is the operational boundary. The main failure mode is solvent-cement compatibility; the cement shall meet ASTM D2235-22 for ABS solvent cement. The solvent-cement joint is tested under ASTM D3212-20 for leak tightness.

Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corporation supplies TAIRILAC ABS AW5000 as an injection-moulding grade of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer in which a polybutadiene rubber phase is dispersed within a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer matrix. The grade is positioned for thermoplastic components requiring a controlled balance of melt fluidity, notched impact resistance, and dimensional repeatability during high-speed filling. Supplier-published characterisation values under ISO 2580-2 classification conditions indicate a nominal density of 1.04 g/cm³, a melt mass-flow rate of approximately 15 g/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg when measured according to ISO 1133-1:2022, and a tensile yield stress near 41 MPa according to ISO 527-2/1A/50. Published notched Izod impact values fall near 21 kJ/m² at 23 °C under ISO 180/1A, while heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa is approximately 83 °C under ISO 75-2/Af. These values are typical rather than lot-specific limits; certificate-of-analysis data should govern release decisions.
The principal differentiation of AW5000 lies in its melt-flow and impact combination. Standard general-purpose ABS grades commonly exhibit melt mass-flow rates below 10 g/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg, whereas AW5000 reaches a nominal 15 g/10 min without dropping notched Izod impact below the 20 kJ/m² range. Flexural modulus published for AW5000 is approximately 2,100 MPa under ISO 178, which is lower than that of glass-filled styrenics but consistent with unfilled ABS. The Vicat softening temperature measured under ISO 306 using method B50 is approximately 95 °C. Processing and mechanical data may vary with pigment loading, regrind content, and moulding conditions; the current manufacturer technical datasheet should be referenced before tool design.

Lot-to-lot variation should be evaluated after conditioning specimens at 23 °C/50 % RH for 16 h or longer as referenced in ISO 291. The tabulated values are provided for material pre-selection; final part qualification requires testing on production-scale tools because weld-line strength, knit-line appearance, and post-mould shrinkage are geometry-dependent.
AW5000 is supplied as natural or coloured pellets. Moisture uptake before processing is a processing control point: residual moisture should remain below 0.05 % to avoid hydrolysis-induced splay and loss of surface gloss. A desiccant dryer operated at 80 °C to 85 °C for 2 h to 4 h is recommended when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Hopper residence in humid air beyond 30 min may re-moisturise dried pellets and generate visible splay on appearance surfaces.
Processing of AW5000 on production-scale injection moulding equipment typically uses a barrel profile from 200 °C at the rear zone to 230 °C at the nozzle, with melt temperature not exceeding 250 °C. Mould temperature should be maintained between 40 °C and 70 °C. On hydromechanical machines with clamp force from 80 t to 120 t, injection velocities of 80 mm/s to 120 mm/s and packing pressures of 50 MPa to 70 MPa are common for wall sections from 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm. Back pressure should be limited to 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa, and screw speed for a 25 mm general-purpose screw with 20:1 L/D should be maintained near 50 rpm to 80 rpm. Excessive residence time above 5 min at 230 °C may produce yellowing, especially in natural or light-coloured lots.
Flow-length behaviour in thin-wall cavities is governed by the melt viscosity and solidification rate. AW5000 can fill a 1.0 mm wall section with flow-length-to-thickness ratios up to approximately 120:1 under standard cold-runner conditions, but cavity-end packing may require sequential valve gating or gas counterpressure above that threshold. Weld-line strength in high-flow applications should be measured according to ISO 527-2 on double-gated plaques rather than estimated from datasheet impact values.
Incompatibilities in melt processing include contamination with polyvinyl chloride, acetal, or polyoxymethylene residues. These materials decompose under ABS processing temperatures and generate acidic or formaldehyde-containing by-products that can attack the polybutadiene phase. Equipment should be purged with a styrenic screw-cleaning compound before production when previous runs involved these polymers. Hot-runner systems should be designed without dead zones; stagnant melt in unfilled channels can degrade and produce black specks after idle periods.
Substitution of a higher-heat ABS with AW5000 in electronic enclosure walls is technically acceptable only when the continuous service temperature remains below the published heat deflection threshold. At 1.8 MPa load, the 83 °C HDT of AW5000 means that sustained load-bearing contact with hot metal shafts or internal power-supply surfaces above approximately 70 °C may cause creep and dimensional movement. Higher-heat ABS grades with HDT above 95 °C are required for applications such as secondary-side power adapter housings with elevated internal temperature. AW5000 should be limited to enclosures where the maximum continuous operating temperature is below the Vicat softening onset and where mechanical loading is intermittent.
Compared with TAIRILAC high-flow ABS grades, AW5000 exhibits a lower melt-flow rate but higher notched Izod impact. Compared with high-heat ABS grades, AW5000 has a broader processing window at lower barrel temperatures and generally produces higher surface gloss in fast-filled moulds. AW5000 is not formulated as an electroplating-specific ABS; no adhesion-promoting surface chemistry is specified for chromium or nickel plating. If electroplating is required, a grade designed for acid etching and electroless adhesion should be selected.
For appearance housings with surface areas greater than 0.2 m², gate placement should preserve a unidirectional melt front and avoid gas traps. Venting depth of 0.025 mm to 0.040 mm along the parting line is recommended at intervals based on projected area. Rapid filling of large fascia panels may require multiple valve gates; unbalanced gating can produce flow hesitation and visible knit lines at rib intersections.
AW5000 does not carry a universal food-contact approval in public grade-specific documentation. Direct food-contact use under FDA 21 CFR or EU 10/2011 should not be assumed without lot-specific certification. Compliance with the RoHS recast 2011/65/EU and with REACH 1907/2006 SVHC obligations must be confirmed from the supplier certificate of analysis or material declaration; compliance statements are lot-dependent and may change with pigment masterbatches or carrier resins. Moulded parts should be marked with the polymer identification code >ABS< if the geometry permits permanent marking under ISO 11469.
| Compliance Area | Standard or Regulation | Verification Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Flammability classification | IEC 60695-11-10 | HB at 1.5 mm; verify current UL yellow card |
| Density reporting | ISO 1183-1 | Record lot density for cavity-weight control |
| Conditioning atmosphere | ISO 291 | 23 °C/50 % RH for comparable test results |
| Polymer marking | ISO 11469 | >ABS< where geometrically possible |
| Electrical equipment restriction | 2011/65/EU | Supplier RoHS declaration per lot |
Ultraviolet exposure is an operational boundary. Unstabilised ABS degrades under direct outdoor sunlight with chalking and embrittlement. AW5000 should not be used for exterior automotive or outdoor enclosure components unless painting or UV-stabilised capstock is applied. In interior applications with incidental UV exposure from windows, accelerated ageing according to ISO 4892-2 can provide comparative data, but published data for this specific configuration is limited.
For washing-machine fascia panels, air-conditioner trim, and small-appliance control housings, AW5000 is specified where moulders require repeatable filling of long flow paths without adopting a high-flow ABS that would reduce impact toughness. In these applications, the grade competes with general-purpose ABS by allowing thinner wall sections while retaining enough rubber-phase content to resist cracking at screw bosses and snap-fit undercuts. Tooling should still include radiused corners at bosses and generous draft to reduce notch sensitivity at the base of load-bearing features.
