Application of Formosa Chemicals & Fibre (FCFC) ABS AG15E2

In automotive interior trim stock produced on 1,800 kN to 3,200 kN hydraulic or hybrid injection-moulding machines, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre ABS AG15E2 is specified where high-flow filling, medium impact strength and low volatile emission allowance are required in grained, low-gloss interior surfaces. The material is not marketed as a painted exterior body resin; its use is restricted to Class B and Class C interior surfaces below the beltline. Moulders dry virgin pellets at 80 °C for 3–4 h in desiccant-bed dryers with a dew point of −40 °C or lower, targeting a moisture content below 0.05 wt%; if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, material is kept in conditioned hoppers or re-dried after 1 h of open exposure. The formulation addition ratio is narrow: 1.5–2.5 wt% ABS-carrier colour masterbatch for grained black, grey or beige interior colours, and 20 wt% maximum clean post-industrial regrind for visible structural parts, because higher regrind levels lower deep-grain reproduction and create gloss mapping after long injection campaigns. On the process side, nozzle melt temperature is held at 240 ± 10 °C, tool temperature at 50–70 °C, and fill time below 1.2 s for thin-walled HVAC vent louvre structures; hot-runner valve-gated systems with 2.0–2.5 mm gate diameters are favoured where the projected part area exceeds 600 cm². Compliance for cabin interior materials references ECE R118 Annex 8 or ISO 3795:1989 horizontal burn-rate testing, with a maximum rate of 100 mm/min, and converters must request EU REACH Annex XVII and local cabin air quality statements from the pellet supplier. Terminal part types include seat belt retractor covers, glove box outer doors, lower B-pillar trim, HVAC vent housings and defroster grille assemblies.

What Restricts Wall Thickness Below 2 mm in White-Goods Control Panels and Vacuum Cleaner Canister Shells?

For home appliance enclosures formed from AG15E2, the primary process conflict is between high-flow filling and impact strength: below 2 mm nominal wall, an ordinary high-flow ABS will fill a ribbed control panel at lower injection pressure, but the notched impact performance becomes sensitive to melt temperature and moisture content. On 2,500–4,000 kN injection presses with accumulators, barrel temperature profiles are set from 210 °C in the feed zone to 245 °C at the nozzle, and mould temperature is controlled at 50–70 °C for textured surfaces; if the mould surface temperature exceeds 70 °C, cycle times increase and low-gloss grain surfaces become shiny. The formulation addition ratio for white appliance parts uses 1.5–2.5 wt% titanium dioxide-based white masterbatch or 0.5–1.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch, with 15–25 wt% clean in-house regrind that is screened through a 4 mm fines separator. Cavity pressure is held at 30–40 MPa through the packing curve; readings below 25 MPa produce sink marks at rib intersections and dimensional growth after annealing. When processors use direct injection into polished or textured cavity steel, vent depth must be limited to 0.015–0.025 mm to prevent flash without trapping gas at the end of fill. Compliance references IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30.2 for fire integrity and UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm where accepted; additional EU declarations under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH are common. Finished product categories include vacuum cleaner canister bottom shells, washing machine control panel frames, air purifier side panels and refrigerator door cap trim.

Where business machine panels require screw-boss integrity after thermal cycling, AG15E2 is moulded at 230–250 °C and 50–60 °C tool temperature, with 1.0–2.0 wt% colour masterbatch and 10–20 wt% clean post-industrial regrind. The process uses 600–1,200 kN servo-electric presses, a 3–5 mm melt cushion and 80 °C drying for 2–3 h to prevent silver streaks. Compliance relies on UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm under IEC 62368-1:2023 fire-enclosure review. Terminal parts include printer side covers, paper trays, scanner lids and document feeder housings.

Indoor Electronics Housing Gloss, Pigment Loading and Fire Enclosure Classification

Electronic enclosure production with AG15E2 is confined to indoor products because unpainted general-purpose ABS does not provide long-term colour stability under direct outdoor UV exposure; telecom outdoor cabinet components are excluded. Router housings, set-top box bases and power strip enclosures made from this resin are moulded on 1,200–3,000 kN accumulator-driven machines with injection speeds of 150–250 mm/s for thin-wall fill and a holding pressure setting that produces a cavity pressure of 35–45 MPa. Mould temperature is controlled at 45–60 °C to balance gloss and dimensions, while melt temperature is set at 230–250 °C. The formulation addition ratio is 1–2 wt% colour masterbatch, with a maximum clean regrind content of 20 wt% for non-cosmetic inner surfaces and 10 wt% for outer covers where shade drift is unacceptable; the base resin is not flame-retardant, so the material cannot be used where a V-0 or V-2 enclosure is required unless separately compounded or shielded by an internal metal barrier. The downstream process includes centralised drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h, deionised mould cooling water, and weekly gas-purging of hot-runner systems; direct gates on ribs are avoided because they create visible jetting marks on high-gloss black covers. The following compliance checklist applies:

Fire enclosureIEC 62368-1:2023IEC 60695-11-10 / UL 94HB at 1.5 mm if accepted by final safety engineering review

Terminal product categories include Wi-Fi router top and bottom covers, set-top box front panels, desk phone handset bases, power strip housings and desktop network attached storage shells. The key operational boundary is that published data for glossy black AG15E2 at walls below 1.2 mm in high-voltage external enclosures is limited; converters are required to verify the exact colour lot for UL 94 HB and for IEC 62368-1:2023 fire-enclosure exemptions.

If EN 71-3 Migration Limits Govern Toy Component Feedstock, AG15E2 Requires Heavy-Metal-Control in Colour Masterbatches

Toy components moulded from AG15E2 are limited to converter recipes using 1–2 wt% certified toy-grade colour masterbatch and 10 wt% or less regrind. Melt temperatures of 220–240 °C and mould temperatures of 35–50 °C are used on high-cavitation cold-runner tools; residence time above 5 min causes yellowing in bright colours. Compliance checks focus on EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 trace-metal migration and ASTM F963-23. Finished products are construction blocks, game trays and doll furniture parts. The grade is not automatically cleared for mouthing toys.

Independently of barrel residence time, a general-purpose ABS of the AG15E2 class is usually specified for indoor battery charger enclosures and power tool clamshell parts only where the service temperature remains below the heat deflection envelope of unfilled ABS and no long-term outdoor UV exposure occurs. Production cells use 80 °C drying for 2–4 h, then inject on 1,000–2,000 kN hydraulic presses with rapid clamp traverse; the clamp force is calculated from a projected-area packing pressure of 25–35 MPa to prevent flash at split lines while maintaining acceptable venting. The formulation uses neat AG15E2 with 0.5–1.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch for charger shells and 10–15 wt% in-house regrind; higher regrind fractions reduce the notched impact consistency needed for boss torque retention and drop impact at −10 °C. Melt temperature is set at 230–250 °C and mould temperature at 45–60 °C; for clamshell housings, the gate is positioned off-centre to prevent knit lines around tubular battery-compartment corners, while assembly uses screw bosses and ultrasonic welding. Compliance for battery chargers references IEC 61558-1 and IEC 60335-2-29 for mains-powered charger safety; the moulded enclosure itself is normally evaluated for flammability under UL 94 HB at the minimum production wall thickness where the end-product standard permits. For power tool accessories, IEC 62841-1 or UL 60745-1 mechanical housing integrity requirements apply. Terminal finished products include torque driver housings, battery charger clamshells, orbital sander dust shrouds and hand blender motor housings. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; converters validate boss pull-out force, low-temperature drop impact and post-mould dimensional stability on first-shot trials before moving to multi-cavity production tools.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp. (FCFC) supplies the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin designated TAIRILAC ABS AG15E2 as a high-flow, general-purpose injection-molding grade. The material is a two-phase terpolymer in which a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix surrounds dispersed polybutadiene rubber domains. The AG15E2 designation indicates a rubber-phase morphology and molecular-weight distribution selected to raise melt fluidity relative to the supplier’s high-impact ABS resins. The product is supplied as pellets for single-screw reciprocating injection-molding machines equipped with general-purpose screws. Representative lot-average data from supplier technical bulletins place the melt-flow index at 18 g/10 min under 220 °C and 10 kg load per ASTM D1238, the density at 1.04 g/cm³ per ASTM D792, and the tensile yield stress at 46 MPa per ASTM D638. These values apply to unfilled natural material; pigment concentrates, fillers, and regrind alter rheology and impact response. Where a dual-standard melt test is required, ISO 1133-1:2022 may be used, but melt volume-flow rate and melt mass-flow rate must not be compared without melt-density correction.

Because ABS pellets are hygroscopic, unprotected storage at 60% relative humidity can raise surface moisture above 0.3% within 48 h. Moisture entering the melt causes silver streaking, splay, reduced weld-line strength, and cycle-to-cycle dimensional drift. These defects are sometimes attributed to mold release contamination or gate blush, but the controlling variable is drying-air dew point rather than hopper temperature alone.

What Processing Envelope Applies to AG15E2?

Predrying in a desiccant dryer with a supply-air dew point no higher than −40 °C is required before processing. The supplier-recommended condition is 80 °C for 3–4 h, reducing pellet moisture below 0.05%. For material transported through high-humidity regions or stored in opened bags for more than 30 days, drying at 80–85 °C for 4–6 h is prudent. Heated hopper temperatures should not exceed 80 °C, and hopper residence time should be limited to avoid thermal yellowing. Barrel temperature profiles for screw diameters between 40 mm and 80 mm are typically set with a feed zone at 190–200 °C, a compression zone at 210–220 °C, a metering zone at 220–230 °C, and a nozzle at 215–225 °C. Melt temperatures above 250 °C accelerate styrene monomer evolution, acrylonitrile degradation, and discoloration. Barrel residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 8–10 min for the full shot volume.

Mold temperature controls gloss, post-mold shrinkage, and part-level impact. A range of 40–70 °C is suitable for most unfilled AG15E2 applications. The lower half of the range reduces cooling time but raises molded-in stress; the upper half improves surface gloss and weld-line strength. Injection pressure in multi-cavity tooling commonly falls between 80 MPa and 120 MPa at the machine nozzle, with pack-and-hold pressure maintained at 50–80% of peak injection pressure for 2–5 s per 1 mm of nominal wall thickness. Screw configuration should use a compression ratio from 2.5:1 to 3:1 and an L/D ratio of at least 20:1. Regrind loading above 20% by weight reduces notched Izod impact and increases yellowing in visible-surface parts. Purging between material changes is effective with general-purpose polystyrene or HIPS, followed by rejection of the transition shots.

Table 1 consolidates representative mechanical and thermal responses for unfilled natural AG15E2 under laboratory conditioning at 23 °C and 50% RH. Single-point datasheet values are not design allowables for load-bearing components; creep, fatigue, and environmental stress-cracking data must be generated on the final part geometry.

Single-point heat deflection temperature is not a continuous-use temperature. AG15E2 is not recommended for load-bearing service above 70 °C because creep modulus declines as the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix approaches its glass transition. The Vicat softening temperature of 103 °C provides a short-term heat-distortion reference. Molded-in stress from uneven cooling can be reduced by annealing at 75–80 °C for 2 h, but post-annealing dimensional change must be validated on the production part.

Melt-Viscosity Differences Separate AG15E2 From High-Impact ABS Grades.

Within the TAIRILAC ABS portfolio, AG15E2 is differentiated by its flow-length and impact-retention envelope. High-impact ABS grades formulated with a larger polybutadiene rubber content typically present notched Izod impact values above 350 J/m at 23 °C, but their melt-flow indices under the same 220 °C/10 kg condition commonly fall below 10 g/10 min. AG15E2 offers a melt-flow index of 18 g/10 min and a notched Izod impact value of approximately 210 J/m. The processing advantage appears in thin-wall and long-flow-length tools as lower injection pressure and faster fill. The trade-off is lower impact energy absorption under notch-sensitive loading. The grade should be selected when demoulding ease, weld-line filling, and cycle-time reduction take precedence over extreme impact performance.

Against high-heat ABS grades that exceed 100 °C heat-deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa, AG15E2 is restricted to applications where continuous service under mechanical load remains below 70 °C. Against halogenated flame-retardant ABS grades, the unreinforced natural AG15E2 carries a nominal UL 94 HB rating at 3.0 mm; it is not a V-0 material. Electroplating-grade ABS resins in the same supplier family are formulated with rubber particle size distributions and surface chemistry optimized for chromic-acid etch adhesion. AG15E2 is not optimized for electroplating, and parts that require electrolytic metal deposition should use a dedicated plating grade or undergo application-specific peel testing under ASTM B533 or ISO 2819.

Because standard notched Izod values do not quantify weld-line behavior, multiaxial impact evaluation per ISO 6603-2 is recommended for multi-gated enclosures. Weld-line impact retention in ABS is lower than the base resin value and depends on melt temperature, mold temperature, and gate geometry. Mold-filling simulation or short-shot studies should be used when gate positions create long weld lines in visible or load-bearing regions.

Applications in which AG15E2 is industrially selected include vacuum-cleaner housings, small kitchen-appliance enclosures, telecommunication equipment covers, computer monitor rear covers, toy structural components, and automotive interior trim such as door-speaker grilles and knee bolsters. The material provides adequate flow for nominal wall thicknesses between 1.6 mm and 3.2 mm. Wall sections below 1.2 mm can exhibit flow hesitation in cold-runner layouts with runner lengths above 100 mm; in such configurations higher mold temperature, elevated injection velocity, and direct gating are required. Tooling design must accommodate mold shrinkage of 0.5–0.7% per ASTM D955. Shrinkage anisotropy is lower than that of polypropylene, but flow-to-transverse shrinkage differences in large flat panels can reach 0.1–0.2%. Masterbatch coloration is possible, but white TiO₂ masterbatches above 5% by weight may reduce tensile elongation and increase melt pressure. Published data for this specific configuration is limited.

    Regulatory Boundaries and Incompatibility Constraints.

Regulatory conformity is application-specific and must be confirmed against the supplier’s current compliance certificate for the exact grade, color, and production site. The boundary conditions below are typical for unfilled natural AG15E2 as supplied.

    Typical regulatory and use-boundary matrix
    AreaDesignation/standardBoundary
EU RoHS2011/65/EU with (EU) 2015/863Supplier declaration indicates homogeneous material does not exceed restricted substance thresholds.

Environmental stress crackingISO 4599Not resistant to ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and strongly oxidizing acids.
Food contactNo blanket listingNot for direct food-contact articles without migration testing under EU 10/2011 or FDA validation.

Chemical incompatibility with AG15E2 follows the known behavior of styrene-acrylonitrile matrices. Ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone and acetone attack the surface rapidly, producing crazing and loss of tensile strength within minutes. Chlorinated solvents and aromatic hydrocarbons induce environmental stress cracking in stressed molded parts. Alcohols, wetting agents, and some process oils can also cause environmental stress cracking when residual molded-in stress exceeds the threshold strain for the contacting fluid. Annealing at 75–80 °C for 2 h lowers residual stress and improves resistance, but it does not make the material suitable for continuous solvent immersion.

Unreinforced ABS is limited in direct sunlight and hot-water service. Polybutadiene rubber domains undergo photo-oxidation and the surface yellows, with simultaneous loss of impact strength. Continuous exposure to hot water above 70 °C is not recommended because hydrolysis and additive migration alter surface gloss and dimensional stability. For continuous outdoor use, UV-stabilized versions or post-molding coatings are required, and weathering performance must be verified under ASTM G154 on the final color and texture.
