Application of Formosa Chemicals & Fibre (FCFC) ABS AF3500S

FCFC TAIRILAC ABS AF3500S is processed as an injection-moulding feedstock in thin-wall and medium-flow downstream applications. The scenarios below identify uses where the material’s general-purpose ABS profile is compatible with HB flammability classifications, non-food-contact service, and ambient-to-moderate thermal exposure. Addition ratios in each scenario are expressed as parts by weight per 100 parts AF3500S resin. Grade-specific datasheet values should be verified against the production-lot certificate; process windows stated here are standard ABS injection ranges where public lot-specific AF3500S data are limited. Compliance statements are directed at the plastic component, not at the finished electrical or mechanical assembly.

Where Does AF3500S Sit in Thin-Wall Consumer Electronics Enclosure Moulding?

Consumer electronics enclosure components with nominal wall thickness 1.2–2.0 mm are produced from AF3500S only when the end-product flammability classification permits UL 94 HB and the electrical safety architecture keeps ignition sources away from the plastic enclosure. Under IEC 62368-1:2018, enclosures may be evaluated for fire risk from localized energy sources; the acceptable HB thickness shall be confirmed against the yellow-card listing for the specific AF3500S colour and thickness. RoHS compliance is documented under EU 2011/65/EU Annex II, REACH declaration under EC 1907/2006, and material marking under ISO 11469:2016. The dry-blend formulation for dark grey or black thin-wall housings is 100 parts virgin AF3500S, 10–20 parts screened in-plant regrind, 1–3 parts carbon-black or colour masterbatch, and 0.5–1.5 parts antistatic masterbatch. The regrind fraction is kept at or below 20 parts because higher recycled ratios shift the melt flow balance and increase short-shot variation across multi-gate tools on large flat bezels.

Processing on standard injection-moulding lines uses desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h to reduce moisture content below 0.05 wt%. Melt temperature is maintained at 210–250 °C, with the front zone at the lower half of this range and the nozzle not exceeding 250 °C. Mould temperature is 40–80 °C for flatness and surface replication. High-flow ABS requires moderate back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa and screw rotation speed below 100 rpm for a 20:1–22:1 L/D screw; excessive shear preheats the melt and may create silver streaks. Clamp force is estimated from projected area at 4–6 kN/cm² for thin-wall enclosures. Finished product types in this segment are router top covers, set-top box fascias, LCD monitor rear covers, and internal electronics brackets where HB is sufficient. If the enclosure is required to meet V-0 at 1.5 mm under IEC 60695-11-10, neat AF3500S is not a formulation candidate; a flame-retardant ABS or PC/ABS compound is required.

Household appliance functional panels and hand-contact trims are a second downstream cluster for AF3500S, especially vacuum cleaner floor nozzles, washing machine control housings, refrigerator door handles and air-conditioner inlet grilles. The governing safety standard is IEC 60335-1:2020; appliance-specific substandards such as IEC 60335-2-2:2019+A1:2021 for vacuum cleaners and IEC 60335-2-7:2019+A1:2021 for washing machines apply. These standards do not automatically mandate a high flammability class for all polymeric parts; however, parts near uninsulated live components or high-temperature surfaces must be assessed for glow-wire behaviour. The dry-blend formulation is 100 parts AF3500S, 15–25 parts clean in-plant regrind from the same colour family, 1–4 parts white or metallic pigment masterbatch, and 0.1–0.5 parts external lubricant or mould-release additive. White appliance formulations with high titanium dioxide loading require verification of dispersion homogeneity because pigment agglomerates create surface defects on high-grip surfaces. The in-plant regrind fraction should be qualified for a maximum of two heat histories; regrind exceeding two cycles causes measurable loss of impact reserve in snap-fit bosses when tested by ISO 180:2023 Izod impact.

Drying before moulding is performed at 80–90 °C for 2–4 h, with desiccant dryer dew point below -20 °C and residual moisture below 0.05 wt%. Barrel settings are 220–240 °C in the metering zone and 200–220 °C in the feed zone to avoid yellowing in light colours. Mould surface temperature is 40–70 °C; high-gloss control panels require the upper end, while matte vacuum cleaner parts may use the lower end to balance shrinkage. Injection speed is set to fill the cavity within 1.0–2.5 s for large-area parts, and hold pressure is 50–70 MPa for 3–6 s to minimize sink marks at rib intersections. Terminal products include appliance control bezels, knobs, handle end caps, floor nozzle rear shells, and air-deflection grilles. When parts are intended for direct food-contact use, AF3500S is not specified; food-contact compliance is outside the grade’s documented application scope.

When AF3500S Is Used in Non-Light-Exposed Automotive Interior Substrates, Warpage Control Is the Primary Constraint

Automotive interior substrates such as door panel lower inserts, seat side shields, glove box lids and floor console side covers represent a downstream cluster where AF3500S is processed only after part-level environmental testing; the neat ABS is not automatically qualified for solar-loaded upper instrument panel skins. Flammability is assessed by ISO 3795:1989 with a burn rate not exceeding 100 mm/min for interior materials, or FMVSS 302 in North America; component-level approval depends on OEM material lists and is not granted by generic ABS data. VOC and odour requirements under VDA 277, VDA 278 or OEM-specific test procedures are batch-sensitive; published data for AF3500S under these methods is limited, so moulders must conduct lot-level testing before serial production. The blend for non-light-exposed black interior parts is 100 parts AF3500S, 15–25 parts post-industrial ABS regrind, 1–3 parts carbon-black masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 parts antioxidant/UV stabilizer concentrate only when indirect sunlight exposure is expected. Direct sunlight applications without topcoat require a UV-stabilized ABS or ASA; neat AF3500S is not specified for sustained UV exposure.

Processing on automotive interior tools uses melt temperatures 230–250 °C and mould temperatures 50–80 °C. Large thin substrates require sequential valve-gated hot-runner systems with gate delay adjusted so flow fronts meet at post-style features rather than at visible A-surface centres. Holding pressure is 50–70 MPa for 5–10 s depending on wall thickness; cooling time is derived from part thickness squared with typical ABS thermal diffusivity of 1.0 × 10⁻⁷ m²/s. Fixture cooling after ejection is mandatory for door panel inserts with flatness below 2.0 mm over 500 mm span. Terminal finished products include painted lower door panels, seat belt anchor covers, glove box outer lids, and console side covers. The material is not recommended for parts carrying airbag deployment load paths or sustained load above 85 °C unless the part design has been validated by OEM-specified heat-aging under ISO 188:2019.

Toy and recreational product structural components are a downstream segment in which heavy-metal migration, mechanical safety, and small-part attachment determine whether AF3500S can be used. Moulders in this segment compound the material in low-temperature profiles to reduce odour and maintain impact, because toy review under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 focuses on the finished toy after conditioning and not on raw pellet composition. The formulation is 100 parts AF3500S, 1–3 parts organic or inorganic pigment masterbatch, and 0–10 parts traceable in-plant regrind; post-consumer recyclates are generally excluded due to migration risk and raw-material traceability under EU 2009/48/EC. Antioxidant addition above 0.2 parts is not used unless supported by migration test data because additives can contribute to extractable fractions. Heavy metals and phthalates are controlled via the masterbatch supplier’s toy-grade declarations, and final articles are tested under ASTM F963-23 for the North American market.

The processing window for toy housings and structural bases is melt temperature 200–230 °C to avoid butadiene-phase degradation that raises odour and reduces Izod impact; mould temperature is 30–60 °C for parts with wall thickness 1.5–3.0 mm. Injection velocity is reduced compared with electronics housings; fill time 2.0–3.5 s is typical for multi-cavity toy moulds, and cushion is maintained at 2–4 mm to avoid overpacking and sink at gate pins. Rib-to-wall ratios are kept below 0.6 to reduce sink marks on exterior toy surfaces. Terminal components include toy vehicle chassis, building-block structural bases, activity station panels, and detachable stroller toy trays that do not serve as protective load-bearing safety equipment. If the moulded toy part is intended for repeated boiling water or dishwasher exposure, AF3500S is not selected due to low hydrolytic stability at sustained high moisture and temperature.

Switchgear Enclosure Dimensional Stability and HB Flammability Boundaries

Switchgear enclosure covers, junction-box lids and non-current-carrying trim components are moulded from AF3500S only where the electrical safety evaluation accepts a polymeric part rated UL 94 HB and where live parts are separated by distance or insulating barriers. Compliance for household switchgear enclosures is anchored by IEC 60670-1:2015+AMD1:2021 for boxes and enclosures, and material ignitability is tested under IEC 60695-11-10:2013+AMD1:2016. Glow-wire end-product requirements under IEC 60695-2-11:2021 at 750 °C or 850 °C typically exceed the performance of neat general-purpose ABS; therefore AF3500S is not accepted for enclosures with glowing-wire ignition risk unless the final article is tested and passed in a flame-retardant compound or protected by an insulating barrier. The compound formula is 100 parts AF3500S, 10–20 parts in-plant regrind from the same production cell, 1–2 parts colour masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 parts antistatic masterbatch for dust-repellent surface specifications. Plate-out from antistatic additives on polished tool surfaces should be monitored by gloss retention checks at intervals of no more than 5000 cycles.

Processing uses melt temperature 220–245 °C and mould temperature 50–70 °C. Gate size is standardized at 0.8–1.0 mm wall thickness for indirect side gates; direct edge gates on visible plates are avoided because gate vestige influences fingerprint gloss around the switch aperture. Screw L/D ratio of 22:1 with compression ratio 2.2–2.5:1 provides homogenisation without excessive shear. Back pressure is set at 0.5–1.0 MPa and decompression at 2–5 mm to prevent drool at hot-tip nozzles. Terminal products are flush-mounting switch surrounds, junction-box lids, DIN-rail enclosure bodies, and wall-plate subframes where service temperature remains below 70 °C continuous.

Office equipment side panels, paper guide rails, scanner base frames and projector housing components form a further downstream group in which AF3500S is moulded into medium-to-large flat parts that must resist creep under low static loading at ambient temperatures. Product-level safety is assessed under IEC 62368-1:2018, with RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH 1907/2006 documentation for electrical and electronic equipment; flammability of the plastic part is typically UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm, and no fire-enclosure function is assigned to the part. The dry-blend formulation is 100 parts AF3500S, 10–20 parts closed-loop in-plant regrind, 1–3 parts colour concentrate, and 0.1–0.3 parts internal mould release. Filled formulations are not used because mineral reinforcement changes the shrinkage coefficient and makes tool transfer between production sites more difficult.

Process conditions for office equipment are melt temperature 210–240 °C and mould temperature 40–70 °C. Large flat side panels use fan gates or tab gates with land length 0.8–1.2 mm, and cavity filling is completed within 2.0–4.0 s. Clamp tonnage is calculated at 3–5 kN/cm² projected area for unfilled ABS; higher pressure does not compensate for poor gate location and may increase core shift. After ejection, parts are conditioned at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50 % RH for 24 h before dimensional inspection according to ISO 294-1:2017. Finished product categories include printer side covers, scanner bases, projector housings, paper transport guides, and office machine control panels. Parts subjected to continuous external heat above 70 °C or solvent exposure from cleaning agents should be converted to a heat-resistant ABS or polycarbonate blend because AF3500S is specified for ambient office equipment service.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corporation supplies the TAIRILAC AF3500S grade as a high-flow acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) injection-molding resin. The material is formulated for thin-section enclosures and housing parts in which melt front advance, weld-line formation, and cycle-time pressure dominate over the requirement for maximum notched impact resistance. AF3500S is a rubber-toughened styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer without halogenated flame-retardant additives. Table 1 lists representative physical and mechanical values reported by the producer; these values are not lot-release specifications and require confirmation against a certificate of analysis for production validation.

The melt mass-flow rate of 35 g/10 min at 200 °C and 5.0 kg places AF3500S in the high-flow band of the FCFC TAIRILAC ABS portfolio. That flow characteristic reduces injection pressure requirements in thin-wall tools but lowers the plateau of heat resistance and impact toughness relative to general-purpose grades such as AG15A1. Consequently, AF3500S is not a direct substitute for medium-impact ABS in sections thicker than 3.0 mm or in load-bearing structural brackets.

What Separates AF3500S from AG15A1 and AG15E0 in Injection-Molding Practice?

AF3500S differs from AG15A1 primarily in melt viscosity and mechanical balance. AG15A1 is specified for general-purpose injection molding with a lower melt flow index and a higher notched impact value; AF3500S is selected when flow length is the controlling variable. In a thin-wall tool with a nominal wall of 1.2 mm, an electric injection-molding machine with clamp force from 600 kN to 1,000 kN and injection velocity of 120–180 mm/s can often fill a multicavity layout with AF3500S without raising melt temperature above 235 °C. Under the same tool geometry, lower-flow ABS may require a thicker wall or a larger gate to avoid short shots. Published data for this specific pairwise configuration is limited; mold-filling simulation and instrumented tool trials are required to quantify the cycle-time advantage.

AG15E0 is an electroplating grade optimized for chromic-acid etch surface adhesion and plate adhesion rather than maximum melt fluidity. AF3500S is not an electroplating-grade ABS and should not be specified for decorative chrome or satin-nickel plating on exterior automotive badges. Additionally, AF3500S is not a flame-retardant grade; its flammability classification is HB at 1.6 mm under UL 94. Applications requiring V-0 performance at 1.6 mm require a flame-retardant FCFC grade and separate verification on the final part geometry.

Because AF3500S has a higher melt-flow index, its apparent melt viscosity is lower under identical shear-rate conditions. This lower viscosity reduces the pressure drop across a given runner and gate, permitting higher projected-area-to-clamp ratios than with AG15A1. The practical hazard is increased sensitivity to overpacking. Overpacking occurs when the gate remains molten too long and melt continues to enter the cavity during the final packing stage, producing flash and dimensional drift. For thin-wall parts, pack/hold switchover should be set at 95–98% of filling volume or by cavity pressure drop, rather than by fixed injection time.

Production-scale failure modes for AF3500S are most frequently traced to pellet moisture and barrel residence-time excursions. ABS is hygroscopic, and moisture levels above 0.06 wt% produce surface splay, silver streaking, and reduced knit-line strength. Desiccant hopper drying with a dew point not higher than −40 °C and an airflow of 3.0–3.8 m³/h per kg/h of throughput is specified. Pre-drying at 80–85 °C for 2–4 h reduces residual moisture below 0.05 wt%; pre-drying above 90 °C for more than 6 h can cause pellet yellowing and gloss variation. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, open pellet exposure should be limited to 30 min or less before machine loading.

Melt-temperature control is a narrow-band process variable for this grade. The recommended melt-temperature window is 200–240 °C, with an optimum plateau of 220–230 °C. A typical barrel profile from rear to nozzle is 180–200 °C, 200–220 °C, 220–235 °C, and 220–230 °C. Sustained melt exposure above 250 °C accelerates degradation of the polybutadiene rubber phase and produces volatile decomposition products, visible yellowing, and a loss of impact strength. The melt should not remain in the barrel at processing temperature for more than 5 min; interruptions beyond this threshold require purging with a styrene-based purge compound for 3–5 barrel volumes.

Screw geometry influences the shear heating response of AF3500S. Production equipment should use a single-stage screw with a length-to-diameter ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of approximately 2.5:1. On a 40 mm screw, screw speed should be held between 80 rpm and 120 rpm, with back pressure at 0.5–1.5 MPa, to avoid excessive viscous dissipation. Grooved feed sections are not recommended for this grade because forced material transport can elevate melt temperature and degrade the rubber phase.

Regrind usage is limited to 20–30 wt% for general-purpose applications. Higher regrind fractions reduce Izod impact strength and increase yellowing. Reground material must be dust-free, dried with virgin pellets, and free of contamination from polypropylene or polyamide. Repeated heat histories can shift melt flow index and reduce the notched impact plateau; regrind addition should therefore be validated by lot-specific testing.

Tool Surface Temperature, Gate Dimensions and Knit-Line Performance

Mold surface temperature controls gloss, molded-in stress, and cycle economics. AF3500S processes across a mold-temperature range of 40–80 °C. Lower mold temperatures from 40 °C to 60 °C shorten cooling time but increase residual stress and reduce surface gloss; higher mold temperatures from 70 °C to 80 °C are required for high-gloss thin-wall housings and for parts subject to post-mold thermal annealing. Injection pressure is typically 50–100 MPa, with holding pressure at 40–70 MPa for 0.5–1.0 s/mm of nominal wall thickness.

Gate and vent dimensions must be set for the high-flow nature of AF3500S. For a nominal wall of 1.5–2.0 mm, pin gates of 0.8–1.2 mm diameter and edge gates with a thickness of 60% of the part wall reduce gate blush and jetting. Vent depths of 0.02–0.03 mm on parting lines and runner ends prevent short shots caused by gas entrapment. Hot-runner manifold and nozzle temperatures should be held at 220–240 °C; internal hot-runner channels should not exceed 240 °C for more than 5 min.

Knit-line strength in AF3500S is a function of melt temperature, mold temperature, and venting. Weld lines are common where flow fronts meet around core pins or apertures. The ratio of weld-line tensile stress to unwelded bulk tensile stress in ABS typically falls between 40% and 60%, depending on melt temperature and hold pressure. For AF3500S, raising mold temperature to 70–80 °C and increasing holding pressure to the upper end of the recommended range is necessary when weld lines occur in load-bearing sections. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; weld-line specimens should be molded and tested according to ISO 527-2:2012 or ASTM D638-14.

Typical application groups for AF3500S are thin-wall electronic housings, small appliance covers, telephone and audio equipment enclosures, data-entry devices, toys, and non-load-bearing instrument panels. The grade is suitable for fast cycling in electric injection-molding machines where melt cushion and cushion stability are maintained within 2–4 mm. Short cooling times require sufficient mold-open and robot takeout sequence stability to avoid gate-stringing and part deformation.

Chemical exposure boundaries must be observed. AF3500S is not resistant to prolonged contact with ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, or chlorinated solvents; these media induce stress cracking and surface attack. Parts exposed to cutting oils, plasticizer-containing PVC gaskets, or aggressive cleaners require compatibility testing under ISO 22088-1:2006 or ASTM D543-21. Ultrasonic welding and hot-plate welding are possible; solvent bonding with toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, or dichloromethane is not recommended for this grade.

If Regulatory Documentation Requires UL 94 and REACH Lot-Level Verification

AF3500S is supplied as a general-purpose ABS without flame-retardant additives. The producer’s UL 94 classification is HB at 1.6 mm; no V-0, V-1, or 5VA classification should be claimed unless the finished part has been tested and listed independently. Under RoHS 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863, the grade may be certified by the producer for the restricted substances listed in Annex II at the 0.1 wt% homogeneous-material threshold, provided lot-level documentation is obtained. Under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, the supplier is required to disclose substances of very high concern above 0.1 wt% in the article or on the Candidate List; users must request a SVHC declaration applicable to the specific lot.

Food-contact, medical, and potable-water certifications are not automatic properties of AF3500S. Final article compliance must be evaluated under the applicable national regulation with the actual additives, colorants, and processing aids present. If the final article is destined for the European Union, migration testing and organoleptic evaluation under the relevant food-contact regulation must be conducted on the production part.
