Application of FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WX1805

ASA WX1805 supplied by FCFC under the TAIRILAC designation is an amorphous styrenic terpolymer in which the impact-modifying rubber phase comprises a saturated acrylate elastomer rather than the unsaturated butadiene phase found in standard ABS. This substitution is the mechanistic basis for the material's resistance to photo-oxidative degradation. Butadiene segments in ABS contain allylic hydrogen sites that are readily abstracted by UV-generated radicals at exposed part surfaces. Acrylate rubber lacks these vulnerable sites. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80–90°C for 3–4 hours to a residual moisture level below 0.05 wt% is mandatory before melt processing. Melt temperatures for injection moulding are maintained within 230–260°C. Melt residence time above 270°C should be limited to less than 5 minutes to avoid yellowing and chain scission. Lot-to-lot melt viscosity variation within specification can shift injection fill time in thin-wall tooling. Cushion monitoring during material changeover is therefore recommended. These pre-processing requirements remain constant across the downstream application scenarios described below.

In exterior automotive trim programmes where unpainted weatherable components replace painted ABS substrates, WX1805 is processed into mirror housing shells, cowl vent grilles, B-pillar appliqués and tailgate closeout panels. The governing specification is colour shift and gloss retention following accelerated weathering. Validation protocols commonly invoke SAE J2527 with xenon arc exposure at 0.55 W/m² at 340 nm and a radiant exposure of 2500 kJ/m². Acceptance criteria commonly specify Delta E ≤ 3.0 and 60° gloss retention ≥ 70% per ISO 2813. Unlike ABS grades where surface chalking initiates within the first outdoor year due to butadiene oxidation, ASA retains surface gloss because the acrylate rubber phase does not generate conjugated carbonyl by-products at the same rate. Production-scale injection moulding of mirror housing shells typically runs on 800–1200 kN machines with two-cavity tools. Wall thickness is held at 2.5–3.0 mm. Weld line strength at mirror tilt actuator mounting bosses is a documented failure mode when circumferential melt flow paths exceed 200 mm. The problem is mitigated by relocating gates to reduce flow convergence angle or by maintaining melt temperature at the upper end of the 230–260°C window. Drying interruptions with hopper residence beyond 8 hours at ambient relative humidity above 60% produce splay defects on unpainted surfaces. Regrind reincorporation above 20 wt% is not recommended for unpainted exterior parts because repeated heat history causes measurable yellowness index drift.

What Limits Interfacial Fusion in Coextruded ASA Capstock Profiles?

Where profile weathering resistance mandates a capstock coextrusion approach, WX1805 is processed as the outer weathering layer over rigid PVC or cellular PVC window and door substrates. The process configuration comprises a 60–90 mm counter-rotating twin-screw main extruder with a 25:1 L/D ratio for the PVC substrate and a 25–45 mm single-screw coextruder with a 25:1 L/D ratio for the ASA capstock. Both extruders discharge into a dual-manifold flat profile die. The capstock layer thickness is controlled between 0.25 mm and 0.50 mm. Below 0.20 mm, die swell variation and extensional orientation across the profile cross-section produce localised thinning defects, particularly at corner radii where draw-down strain concentrates.

The critical process variable is the melt temperature differential at the manifold convergence point. ASA capstock melt temperature is maintained at 220–240°C. PVC substrate melt enters the junction at 180–200°C. If convergence point temperature falls below 180°C, interfacial fusion is incomplete and the capstock layer exhibits delamination during post-extrusion fabrication operations such as routing, cutting or corner welding. Fusion strength is validated through lap shear testing adapted from ISO 527-3. Failure mode analysis should confirm cohesive substrate failure rather than interfacial peel. Excessive capstock melt temperature above 250°C increases the risk of PVC thermal degradation as heat transfers across the interface. Hydrochloric acid evolution and visible blush on the substrate edge result. Predrying of the capstock resin at 80–90°C for 3–4 hours is mandatory. Surface micro-voids caused by residual moisture are not always visible in the as-extruded profile but appear as silver streaks after 500–800 hours of accelerated weathering per ISO 4892-2. Colour and gloss retention of the weatherable layer are evaluated according to ISO 105-A02 gray scale and ISO 2813 60° gloss. After 3000 kJ/m² xenon arc exposure, the ASA capstock should exhibit gray scale rating no worse than 4 on the 1–5 scale. Gloss retention should remain above 50%.

End products include window lineal profiles, door thresholds, fascia boards and roofline trims. The full assembled profile is classified under EN 12608 for impact resistance and wind load performance. The ASA capstock contributes to impact retention because the PVC substrate alone shows brittle failure after equivalent weathering durations. Capstock regrind may be incorporated into the PVC substrate layer at levels up to 10 wt% without measurable void formation, but should not be re-introduced into the capstock layer due to loss of weatherability.

UL 746C Recognition and Outdoor Electrical Enclosure Performance

For outdoor electrical enclosures, WX1805 is processed into junction boxes, telecom pedestal housings, disconnect switch enclosures and photovoltaic combiner boxes where UL 746C recognition for outdoor use is required. The UL 746C outdoor suitability programme comprises ultraviolet exposure, water immersion and thermal ageing protocols. The unfilled material is commonly classified UL 94 HB. Flame-retarded compounds fall outside the scope of this specific ASA grade unless explicitly documented in the supplier's UL yellow card. The polymer must retain minimum tensile and impact properties after 1000 hours of xenon arc exposure and 7 days of water immersion at 70°C to maintain relative thermal index values.

For enclosure housings, wall thicknesses from 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm are maintained to preserve mechanical strength and screw boss pull-out resistance. Tooling for enclosure boxes with integral living hinge depressions commonly specifies hinge zone thickness between 0.35 mm and 0.50 mm. Published flexural endurance data for this specific ASA grade under cyclic hinge loading is limited. Validation on the actual production mould is required. Gasket groove dimensions must accommodate seal compression of 20–30% to achieve IP65 or IP66 ingress protection per IEC 60529. During processing, low-shear screw configurations with compression ratios between 2.0:1 and 2.5:1 and back pressure settings between 5 bar and 15 bar are recommended. These settings prevent acrylate rubber phase agglomeration at the screw tip. Inadequate back pressure causes visible surface mottling on textured enclosure surfaces. Enclosure components are frequently moulded on 1000–2000 kN hydraulic machines with hot runner systems. The absence of butadiene rubber permits outdoor service without the measurable decline in Charpy impact that characterises exposed ABS enclosures after 12–18 months.

In handheld garden equipment and portable power tool housings where outdoor storage and sunlight exposure coincide with fuel and lubricant contact, WX1805 replaces standard ABS and glass-filled polypropylene in applications such as chain saw upper covers, hedge trimmer motor housings, blower fan scrolls and lawn edger base plates. Injection moulding wall thicknesses are maintained between 2.0 mm and 2.8 mm. Dimensional stability under seasonal temperature fluctuation is governed by the amorphous morphology. Linear thermal expansion coefficient in the flow direction remains within 70–90 × 10⁻⁶ /K, resulting in lower warpage than semicrystalline polyolefins in thin-wall housing geometries. Chemical resistance is validated through immersion testing per ASTM D543 against reference fuel C and common garden equipment lubricants. Aromatic hydrocarbon contact above 40°C should be avoided due to environmental stress cracking risk. Impact testing per ISO 6603-2 confirms ductile failure mode at 0°C for 2.5 mm plaques, a requirement frequently specified for cordless electric power tools used in cold outdoor conditions. Vibration screw bosses require minimum boss outer diameter equal to twice the screw pitch diameter and adequate supporting ribs to prevent fatigue cracking during 1000-hour endurance testing. In production, gas-assisted injection moulding is occasionally applied to sections of 4 mm or greater on blower fan scrolls to reduce sink marks without extending cycle time beyond 60 seconds.

When Chlorinated Pool Water Meets UV Exposure in Equipment Housings

Simultaneous exposure to dilute chlorinated water, continuous moisture condensation and high-intensity outdoor UV defines the operating environment of pool and spa equipment housings processed from WX1805. Filter tank shrouds, pump housing covers, heater equipment panels and skimmer lids are the principal end products. The governing failure mechanism in these applications is environmental stress cracking. Chlorinated water at free chlorine concentrations between 1 ppm and 3 ppm acts as a weak stress-cracking agent on ABS materials, particularly at moulded-in residual stress concentrations such as gate vestige areas, weld lines and sharp internal corners. ASA demonstrates reduced stress-cracking susceptibility because the acrylate rubber phase exhibits lower sensitivity to chlorine-initiated surface oxidation than butadiene phases.

Moulding parameters to minimise residual stress include uniform wall thickness transitions with radii of at least 0.5 mm at all internal corners. Avoidance of hot spots in the tool is necessary. Post-mould annealing of critical components at 80°C for 2 hours is specified when heavily machined features are required. Compliance with NSF/ANSI 50 for equipment in contact with swimming pool water is achieved when the material is used in non-potable water contact applications. Specific extraction test data should be confirmed through the supplier. Accelerated weathering per ISO 4892-2 with 3000 kJ/m² exposure validates gloss retention and colour stability. Salt spray testing per ISO 9227 for 500 hours is additionally specified for coastal outdoor equipment installations. Dimensions of pump housings frequently exceed 300 mm in diameter, requiring clamp forces above 2500 kN. Two-stage injection profiles with slow filling speeds in the first stage prevent jetting at gate entry points.

From marine portlight surrounds to recreational vehicle awning rail end caps, WX1805 is processed into exterior trim components where UV irradiance, salt spray deposition, thermal cycling from -20°C to 80°C and mechanical loading during vehicle motion occur simultaneously. Additional end products include access hatch covers, shore power inlet flaps and window frame profiles. Salt spray exposure per ISO 9227 for 1000 hours is a common OEM specification for marine fixtures. The absence of butadiene unsaturation prevents chloride-induced surface degradation that produces pitting and stress cracking in ABS components. Moulded-in black provides the highest UV protection through carbon black pigment at loading levels between 1.0 wt% and 3.0 wt%. Lighter colours require stabilised pigment packages and are evaluated at reduced weathering intervals. Fabrication includes secondary operations such as routing, drilling and mechanical fastening. Ultrasonic welding is compatible with unfilled ASA applications. In production, window frame profiles are extruded with vacuum calibration tanks maintaining ±0.05 mm dimensional tolerance across the cross-section. The material exhibits low die swell amplitude compared to HDPE, simplifying profile dimension control. Supplier joint validation on actual extrusion tooling is recommended before specification lock-in because published data for some marine OEM validation sequences remains limited.

Heat Ventilation and Outdoor Appliance Shroud Processing

Outdoor air conditioner condenser unit shrouds, heat pump enclosures and inverter cabinets are injection moulded from WX1805 where continuous heat exposure, UV radiation and acoustic performance requirements intersect. Surface temperatures on these components reach 70–85°C under full solar load on dark grey finishes. Published values for unfilled ASA heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa load per ISO 75-2/A typically range from 85°C to 100°C, providing structural margin at these service temperatures when wall thicknesses are designed above 3.0 mm. UV stability prevents chalking on heat pump compressor covers where surface roughness directly influences noise dampening foam adhesion. Rib patterns on the inner surface of condenser shrouds are used to break acoustic standing waves. Rib height is maintained below 8 mm with draft angles of 1° to ensure demoulding without sink marks.

The parts are frequently moulded on 1500–2500 kN hydraulic toggle machines with multi-cavity tools. Cycle times range from 45 seconds to 75 seconds depending on wall thickness and finish. UL 746C recognition may apply when electrical safety enclosures are involved. In many outdoor shroud applications, the material functions as a protective cover rather than a live electrical enclosure, and compliance with IEC 60335-2-40 is the governing safety standard. For dark-coloured units, predrying and regrind ratios must be strictly controlled to avoid splay defects that become visible after outdoor weathering.
