Application of FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WG1500

FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WG1500 is processed in multicavity exterior mirror housing tools where high-gloss black and body-color-matched components must retain color after multi-year outdoor exposure. Pre-drying in a closed-loop desiccant dryer is set to a supply air dew point below −40 °C and a material bed temperature of 80 °C ± 2 °C for 3–4 h; residual moisture above 0.05 wt% as measured by ISO 15512:2019 method A produces splay on textured and polished tool surfaces. On a 50 mm general-purpose reciprocating screw with 20:1 L/D ratio and 2.5:1 compression ratio, the melt is discharged into hot runner valve-gate systems with independently controlled nozzles; screw recovery and decompression are adjusted so that the melt cushion remains between 3 mm and 5 mm to prevent silver streaks from decompression bubble collapse. The accelerated weathering protocol for exterior automotive components, ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1, uses xenon-arc irradiation at 0.55 W/m²·nm at 340 nm, a black-standard temperature of 65 °C ± 3 °C, and a 102 min dry / 18 min water-spray sequence; OEM programs may replace this with SAE J2527 and add visual evaluation using ISO 11664-4 with a CIELAB ΔE limit of 3.0 over the specified exposure interval. The molded part must also pass tensile property retention according to ISO 527-1:2019 after weathering, with wall-section transitions below 1.5 mm nominal thickness requiring additional gate-location analysis because of increased weld-line sensitivity.

Roof Vent Brackets and the Hidden Condensation Cycle Problem

In injection-molded roof vent brackets and skylight surrounds, the dominant failure mechanism is not ultraviolet radiation but repeated condensation and freeze-thaw cycling. The component is attached to metal flashing or PVC profile systems; differential thermal expansion between stainless steel fasteners and ASA suppresses boss cracks only when the boss outer diameter is at least 2.0× the fastener nominal diameter and the melt is not packed beyond gate freeze. The qualification set for this application includes AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440-17 for fenestration assemblies, ASTM D4216-17 for exterior vinyl profiles, and ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 for surface retention. Pre-drying follows the same desiccant dryer benchmark of 0.05 wt% maximum residual moisture; molding barrel settings range from a rear zone near 210 °C to a nozzle near 240 °C, with tool temperature held at 65 °C ± 5 °C to reduce orientation at snap-fit undercuts. A process conflict arises during cold-runner ejection because hot-tip temperature above 250 °C can generate local yellowing at the gate vestige, and that yellowing is magnified by the white or light-grey capstock colors used on roof vents.

Agricultural equipment enclosures built from FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WG1500 are qualified for exposure to dilute fertilizer salts, wet grass, and wide outdoor temperature swings rather than for continuous load-bearing operation. The grade is dried to 0.05 wt% moisture and injection molded with a barrel profile from 215 °C to 245 °C; mold temperature is maintained at 60 °C ± 5 °C to produce enough surface hardness for cleaning with dilute sodium hypochlorite solution. Impact resistance is assessed using ISO 179-1:2010 Charpy notched specimens at −30 °C, while chemical resistance after contact with 5 wt% sodium chloride solution and 10 wt% ammonium sulfate solution is evaluated following the immersion procedure of ASTM D543-14. Published data for concentrated glyphosate formulation contact on this specific grade is limited; pre-production trials in the actual diluted spray mixture are required because absorption and gloss reduction depend more on carrier solvent than on active ingredient concentration. Weld lines near mounting bosses are shifted by sequential valve gating and verified by short-shot studies because the cold boss inserts intensify frozen-layer orientation and reduce the effective melt bonding area.

What Limits Capstock Layer Thickness in ASA/PVC Coextrusion?

Coextrusion of ASA capstock over rigid PVC window and door profiles imposes a thermal-separation constraint because the ASA melt processed at 210 °C to 225 °C cannot be fed through the same die channels as a PVC melt stream that must remain below 195 °C to avoid autocatalytic dehydrochlorination. On a production-scale line, the PVC main profile is plasticized in a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder with screw diameter 65 mm and 22:1 L/D, while the ASA capstock is melted in a single-screw extruder with 45 mm diameter and 30:1 L/D; each stream is delivered separately to a dual-slot feedblock that maintains a capstock layer from 0.20 mm to 0.65 mm. Below 0.20 mm, ultraviolet protection is insufficient for ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 weathering without color-match failure; above 0.65 mm, interfacial shear stress increases and may produce wave-like surface defects when the viscosity ratio between capstock and substrate exceeds 1.5:1. Die land temperature is controlled with separate thermocouple feedback loops at 190 °C ± 3 °C on the PVC face and 215 °C ± 3 °C on the ASA face, and vacuum calibration pressure is set incrementally to prevent collapse in the first cooling tank.

The coextrusion qualification matrix combines processing moisture control, melt-flow verification, and exterior test codes used on industrial lines:

Flammability classUL 943.0 mm horizontal burn, HB class for unfilled ASA
Color differenceISO 11664-4CIELAB ΔE calculated after accelerated weathering

Outdoor telecom and light EV charger enclosures made from unfilled ASA are qualified for low-temperature mechanical impact and long-term color stability under damp heat cycling. The enclosure is molded at a melt temperature near 240 °C into a tool with 60 °C water circulation; sequential valve gating is used to move the weld line away from the gasket-sealing groove because the gasket seat requires continuous flatness within 0.1 mm across a 500 mm length. Ingress protection is verified by IEC 60529:2013 tests IPX5 for water jets and IP6X for dust; thermal shock is assessed by IEC 60068-2-14:2009 test Nb from −40 °C to 85 °C for 500 cycles, followed by corner-boss impact at energy specified by the final equipment standard. Unfilled ASA does not provide a UL 94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm; where fire-retardant enclosures are required by the end-product standard, the part must be re-engineered with a flame-retarded ASA/PC blend or a mineral-filled FR formulation because retrofit FR additives can reduce low-temperature impact below fielded OEM limits.

    When Two-Shot Overmolding Demands Melt-Temperature Control Below 250 °C

In two-shot molding, FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WG1500 is injected as the surface layer over a pre-molded ABS or PC/ASA core when the finished component requires UV-stable skin without the full cost of a solid ASA structure. The first-shot substrate is pre-dried to 0.05 wt% moisture and kept in a desiccant hopper at 80 °C; the second-shot ASA barrel profile is held between 235 °C and 250 °C, with individual band temperature deviation controlled at ±2 °C because a spike above 250 °C increases the tendency to form thermal degradation products visible through light-colored cap layers. The tool is equipped with a rotating core, hydraulic core pull sequencing, and cavity pressure transducers at the gate; cavity pressure at pack-to-hold transfer is maintained at 50–70 MPa to avoid sink without breaking the substrate surface. Shrinkage after molding is measured according to ISO 294-4:2018, and tensile properties of the composite are tested by ISO 527-1:2019 using type 1A specimens cut across the weld line. Regrind of second-shot sprue and runner is limited to 15–20 wt% because the UV stabilizer package becomes diluted by recycled material and notched impact at −20 °C can fall below the end-use specification. Published data for adhesion between this specific grade and chemically modified polyphenylene ether core substrates is limited; a line trial with thermal shock at −30 °C and cross-hatch evaluation on a textured surface is required before replacing PC/ASA with PPE-based core stock.

Swimming-pool equipment housings and outdoor furniture armrests represent another application route where processing shifts from structural load-bearing to resistance against dosed pool chemicals and continuous ultraviolet exposure. Molded parts made from WG1500 are exposed to free chlorine concentrations from 1 mg/L to 5 mg/L at service temperatures up to 40 °C; chemical resistance testing is performed by ASTM D543-14 immersion procedure using buffered sodium hypochlorite solution at the maximum expected dosage, with dimensions and appearance checked at 24 h and 7 days. The injection mold is textured to a depth of 0.08–0.12 mm to avoid visible scratching, and a chemical blowing agent is added at 0.5–0.8 wt% only when the part exceeds 6 mm nominal wall thickness; below that thickness, gas counterpressure molding is not required. Warpage control uses ISO 294-4:2018 shrinkage measurements in flow and cross-flow directions, with the tool cut allowance adjusted separately for each direction. This application does not require a high-heat stabilization package, so the melt is processed near 235 °C to maintain impact after outdoor aging.

Marine Exterior Trim and the Chloride Stress Cracking Boundary

Marine exterior trim such as helm housing surrounds and cowl vents is specified for ASA when the part is not continuously submerged and does not contact fuel or aromatic hydrocarbons. Salt fog exposure is conducted by ISO 9227:2017 neutral salt spray; fastener bosses and snap-fit features are inspected for crack onset after 500 h and 1,000 h because sea salt combined with residual molded-in stress at sharp internal corners can initiate stress cracking at features that pass dry impact tests. The component is molded with a high-gloss cavity, using mold temperature 70 °C ± 5 °C to reduce orientation and minimize chloride-induced surface haze. Use below the waterline, contact with ester-based hydraulic fluids, or contact with ketone-containing cleaners violates the compatibility boundary and requires either a modified polymer system or sealed post-coating; ISO 175:2010 is used to define the chemical exposure set and test temperature before a part is transferred from an automotive exterior program to marine service. Published data for continuous marine weathering of this specific grade beyond 1,000 h salt spray is limited, so field validation on dock-mounted samples is required for approval. Drying before molding uses closed-loop desiccant equipment with −40 °C dew point air and 80 °C bed temperature for at least 3 h, because moisture-related splay at a high-gloss surface cannot be hidden by texturing.
