Paint elimination programmes for automotive exterior trims place FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WF3400 directly against retained car-wash detergent, acid rain, and continuous ultraviolet exposure. The qualification path is not limited to colour shift; it includes gloss retention measured at 60° per ISO 2813, moulded-in stress relaxation through post-shrinkage measurements per ISO 294-4:2018, and low-temperature ductility after thermal ageing. Granulate is pre-dried in a closed-loop desiccant hopper with a dew point below -40 °C for 4 h at 80 °C; residual moisture above 0.03 wt%, as determined by ISO 15512 Karl Fischer titration, produces silver streaks at the gate and reduces far-field gloss on cowl vent grilles. Barrel temperatures are profiled from 220 °C to 250 °C, and mould surface temperature is held between 60 °C and 80 °C to balance flow-length ratio against orange-peel. On a hydraulic clamp injection unit with a 70 mm screw, short shots in a 2.5 mm nominal wall cowl grille are resolved by increasing hot-runner tip temperature in 5 °C increments only after confirming melt viscosity stability on a capillary rheometer with a 20:1 L/D die; arbitrary barrel boost changes are unsuitable because local residence-time variation shifts the molecular-weight distribution. Post-moulding validation includes SAE J2527 xenon arc exposure of 2500 kJ/m² at 340 nm, with acceptance criteria requiring no cracking and no chalking, while tensile retention is checked in accordance with ISO 527-2 or ASTM D638-14 using 1A specimens.

Capstock coextrusion of ASA over rigid PVC or ABS profiles requires separate melt-temperature strategies because the ASA cap layer transfers excess heat to the underlying PVC core and can trigger tin stabiliser decomposition at the interface. The main rigid PVC substrate is usually run at 180 °C to 190 °C on a 30:1 L/D parallel twin-screw extruder, while the ASA capstock is processed through a single-screw satellite extruder with a 24:1 L/D barrel at 200 °C to 220 °C depending on cap thickness and line speed. Cap thickness for weatherable cladding is held between 0.15 mm and 0.30 mm; thinner layers invite chalking propagation into the substrate after 1500 kJ/m² xenon exposure, and thicker layers raise die-lip shear stress sufficiently to create surface melt fracture. The feedblock is set with a streamlined transition and a die-lip land length of 10 to 12 times the final gap, because unequal velocity profiles produce layer-thickness inversions that are not visible at the die exit but appear as white speckle after 12 months of north-facing exposure. Interfacial delamination is monitored by a 180° peel test on coextruded strip specimens; the most common production root causes are condensed moisture on the core web and dust attracted by static charge before the nip. In capstock over ABS, the ASA melt temperature can be extended to 230 °C, but the core ABS must contain no more than 0.02 wt% residual styrene monomer and no external lubricant film, otherwise the cap layer separates during post-extrusion thermoforming of dormer cladding.
Outdoor telecommunication and energy-storage enclosure programmes sometimes evaluate ASA WF3400 for door shells, sun shields, and cable-entry covers where UV exposure and dimensional stability dominate but no live electrical parts are enclosed. The replacement eliminates the paint line and its solvent-vapour exhaust, but the material is not a drop-in flame-retardant substitute. If a housing must meet UL 94 V-0 at the final wall thickness, a flame-retardant ASA or ASA/PC grade is required; WF3400 is limited to enclosures with UL 94 HB acceptance or no flame rating. For the mechanical design, side walls are moulded at 3 mm to 4 mm nominal thickness using a valve-gated hot runner with tip temperature monitored by a 0.1 °C resolution controller; oscillation above ±3 °C creates visible cold-slug marks around the valve gates. Outdoor suitability is verified under UL 746C f1 or IEC 60068-2-5, but certification status must be confirmed lot-to-lot with the resin producer because pigment packages change surface heat absorption and can shift the effective service temperature by 5 °C to 8 °C. Long-term heat ageing is supported by ISO 4577 or UL 746B; accelerated oxidation data generated on glass-reinforced ASA are not applicable to this unfilled grade because fibre content changes surface oxidation kinetics and colour development rate.
On agricultural sprayer boom covers and dilute agrochemical rinse-water contact surfaces, FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WF3400 is converted into vacuum-formed or injection-moulded covers that must withstand UV, mechanical vibration, and intermittent chemical contact. The granulate is pre-dried to <0.03 wt% residual moisture before sheet extrusion, and thermoformed sheet is conditioned at 23 °C / 50% RH for 24 h to stabilise edge-tear variability. Chemical resistance is formulation-dependent; immersion testing per ISO 175 using 96 h exposure at 23 °C is specified for each tank mix containing fatty acid methyl ester adjuvants, because published WF3400 data for these specific agrochemical formulations is limited. Environmental stress cracking on stressed mounting bosses is screened per ISO 22088 with a constant-strain fixture at 1% outer-fibre strain; production failures observed on sprayer booms have been traced to adhesive residues and surfactant carryover from recycled ABS packaging rather than direct UV embrittlement. The injection mould is textured with a grain depth of 20 µm to 30 µm on vertical surfaces to mask weld-line movement, and cavity-pressure mapping is used to set clamp force instead of a fixed tonnage because hydraulic pressure loss along a long hot manifold can shift the effective hold pressure at the last cavity by 50 bar to 80 bar.
If low-temperature impact retention governs marine and recreational-vehicle trim, the qualification protocol is separated into dry impact after weathering and impact at -30 °C after moisture conditioning, because the amorphous ASA matrix has a lower glazing tendency than general-purpose ABS but is still notch-sensitive in thick sections. Izod specimens are machined from flat plaque sections and tested per ISO 180 or ASTM D256 at 23 °C, -10 °C, and -30 °C; the ductile-to-brittle transition is recorded as the temperature where the batch-to-batch energy value drops below a pre-set 10 kJ/m² control limit derived from the incumbent painted-ABS reference. Accelerated weathering before impact uses ISO 4892-2 with a xenon arc and daylight filters; surface gloss retention is measured at 60° per ISO 2813, but gloss retention alone does not predict retained impact because surface microcracks can initiate below the resolution of gloss instruments. Thermoforming of marine dashboard coverings uses sheet surface temperatures of 150 °C to 170 °C and an aluminium mould held at 70 °C; sagging is controlled by monitoring melt elastic response under a 1 N load, and deep-draw ratios above 1.5:1 require plug assist to prevent corner-thickness reduction below 60% of the original sheet gauge. The formed part is stress-relieved at 80 °C for 2 h before bonding to rigid substrates, because residual forming stress combined with moisture freezing at under-cabin temperatures produces microcracks around fastener holes.
Where outdoor HVAC louver and fan-shroud programmes require a non-painted amorphous thermoplastic, ASA WF3400 is injection-moulded into horizontal louver blades and condenser fan shrouds with service exposure to condensing water, UV, and motor heat. The design step that governs tolerances is post-mould shrinkage after 24 h per ISO 294-4:2018; louver blades longer than 600 mm are stickered after ejection to reduce bow induced by differential cooling between the textured face and the ribbed back. Mould temperature is maintained at 70 °C to 80 °C for grained surfaces, and cooling time is set by measuring surface temperature at demoulding to remain below 80 °C using an infrared pyrometer; premature ejection creates hinge-hole distortion on condenser shrouds. Thermal creep under motor-mount load is evaluated per ISO 899 with a 10 MPa tensile stress at 60 °C, and the part is constrained by ribbing rather than wall thickening because section changes above 25% create sink marks visible through the moulded texture. The material is not recommended for fan blades exceeding 350 mm tip diameter unless the hub-to-blade thickness transition is radiussed to 3 mm minimum and validated by rotational burst testing at 1.2 times rated speed; published data for WF3400 in this specific rotating configuration is limited, so prototype validation is mandatory.
High-gloss black-out tape extrusion exposes ASA WF3400 to a narrow melt-film stability window at the die exit, because surface defects are not hidden by grain or secondary coating. Rigid black-out tape stock is produced on a 30:1 L/D single-screw extruder with a Maddock mixer and a flexible-lip flat die; the melt is delivered at 220 °C to 230 °C and drawn through a polished three-roll stack with a first-roll temperature of 90 °C and a second-roll temperature of 80 °C. The upper roll-gap pressure is controlled within ±5% to avoid gauge bands that later read as gloss differences at 60° reflectometer angle. Web edge trim is re-fed as regrind at no more than 15 wt%; higher regrind ratios reduce black pigment dispersion homogeneity measured as ΔE mottling. A melt pump upstream of the die is set to maintain pressure fluctuation below 1.0 bar, because die-lip pressure oscillations above 2.0 bar create visible chatter marks. Slit tape is wound on tension-controlled winders at 0.4 N/mm to 0.6 N/mm web tension to prevent blocking and telescoping. The extruded tape is later thermoformed into exterior B-pillar appliqués; the sheet is reheated with far-infrared ceramic elements until surface temperature reaches 155 °C to 165 °C, and the forming mould is held at 70 °C to retain the micro-gloss surface. A production failure mode is microtear at the die-lip exit caused by oxidized gel particles from stagnant resin in the adapter; this is controlled by thermocouple placement at the adapter midpoint and by shutting down when melt residence time exceeds 30 min.
