Application of FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WF3301

FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WF3301 is handled as an amorphous weatherable acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate resin with a defined drying and thermal history requirement before any conversion step. In coextrusion of weatherable capstock over rigid PVC window lineals, the ASA layer is maintained at 0.15–0.25 mm over a 2.5 mm PVC substrate using a 45 mm single-screw extruder with a 30:1 L/D barrier screw and a gear pump. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h with a dew point below -20 °C reduces pellet moisture below 0.02 %; residual water in the ASA layer produces surface splay and interfacial microvoids at the capstock bond line. Melt temperature is held between 210 °C and 230 °C, while the gear pump controls layer thickness variation within ±0.02 mm across a 600 mm sheet die. Cap layers below 0.12 mm cause visible streak defects, and layers above 0.30 mm increase shear stress during cooling, leading to corner delamination in dark brown window profiles, deck fascia caps, and fence post caps. Weatherability is verified under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1; a ΔE*ab below 3.0 after 3,000 h at 0.51 W/m² and 340 nm is accepted for dark brown capstock. Because ASA WF3301 is an amorphous resin, extrusion shrinkage is lower than that of semicrystalline PVC, but matched viscosity at the polymer interface is necessary to prevent downstream edge delamination during punching and bending.

What Limits Thin-Wall Fill and Surface Consistency in Unpainted Mirror Shells?

Injection of thin-wall exterior mirror shells from FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WF3301 in 1.8–2.2 mm nominal wall depends on the grade's high-flow branch reported under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg. When the melt temperature is held at 240 °C and the mold surface is regulated to 60 °C, transfer pressure should remain below 80 MPa, and fill time should fall between 1.5 s and 2.5 s to prevent surface blush and hesitation lines at the housing periphery. The most frequent production-scale defect is a cold flow line at the mirror gasket lip because the flow front stalls at a thickness transition from 2.2 mm to 1.2 mm. A sequential valve-gate hot runner with two drops reduces this defect but produces a weld line at the apex; if the mold is vented insufficiently, that weld line can lower notched impact retention to 60–70 % of the base value. Mechanical conformance uses ISO 527-2 tensile yield of 40–48 MPa, ISO 178 flexural modulus of 2,000–2,500 MPa, and ISO 179-1 notched Charpy impact at 23 °C above 8 kJ/m² for unfilled weather-resistant ASA. For exterior mirror applications, the weatherability test is SAE J2527 with filtered xenon arc; after 2,500 kJ/m² at 340 nm, unpainted black mirror shells should retain a 60° gloss above 70 % of initial and show no visible cracking or blooming at the gasket seat. Terminal components include outboard mirror housings, base covers, and skull caps assembled with robot-applied butyl tape and ultrasonically welded bosses; all boss features are kept below 1.5X the nominal wall to avoid sink marks visible after high-gloss black molding.

When Outdoor Junction Boxes Must Satisfy UL 746C F1 Without Painting

Outdoor junction boxes and radio unit shrouds are molded from ASA WF3301 because the part must pass UL 746C f1 outdoor suitability without a paint film. In this conversion route, enclosure walls are 3.0 mm, internal ribs are 2.0 mm, and the gasket groove is designed for an EPDM cord compressed to 25 % deflection. If the mold temperature is below 50 °C, rapid quenching builds residual stress that relaxes during xenon exposure and allows the cover to lose flatness by 0.15–0.30 mm, breaking the IP66 gasket seal. A mold temperature of 65 °C with a cooling time of 20–25 s keeps the warpage budget within 0.10 mm across a 250 mm cover span. The critical compliance path is not only color change: UL 746C f1 requires retention of impact and dielectric properties after specified UV and water cycling, so converters must request the grade-specific UL yellow card. Unfilled ASA grades generally carry UL 94 HB flammability and a grade-dependent relative temperature index; enclosure designs requiring V-0 at 1.5 mm should not be specified without flame-retardant validation. Barrel cleanliness is a production bottleneck because polycarbonate or polyamide residues above 3–5 % contamination create delamination streaks in dark gray and black enclosures. Terminal products include 5G small-cell shrouds, outdoor control boxes, and pump control housings.

At -30 °C the failure mode in a snow thrower discharge chute shifts from gross yield to notched crack propagation, making the gate vestige and the bolt boss the two most dangerous stress concentrators. ASA WF3301 processed at a melt temperature of 245 °C and a mold temperature of 55 °C on a 3,500 kN toggle clamp machine provides better wall hardness than low-temperature polyethylene but must be assessed by ISO 179-1 notched Charpy impact at -30 °C. Unfilled weather-resistant ASA grades typically fall between 6 kJ/m² and 10 kJ/m² at -30 °C; if the measured value is below 5 kJ/m², the chute bottom lip should be redesigned with a 2.0 mm radius instead of a 0.5 mm radius. The processing window is narrow because melt temperature above 250 °C produces surface yellowing and a sharp odor from thermal degradation, while below 230 °C the far side of the chute shows visible flow hesitation lines. The allowable band is therefore ±5 °C around 240 °C. Injection speed should be ramped from 40 mm/s to 120 mm/s during filling; a constant slow injection of 25 mm/s leaves a dull blush behind the hot runner gate and extends cycle time beyond 65 s. Terminal components include snow thrower discharge chutes, belt covers, and dashboard carriers for ride-on snow removal equipment.

Agricultural Telemetry Housings and Dilute Fertilizer Contact Resistance

ASA WF3301 is evaluated for agricultural telemetry and irrigation controller enclosures where outside surfaces are exposed to high UV and the inside atmosphere may contain dilute ammonium nitrate, calcium nitrate, and magnesium sulfate from fertigation. The material is not approved for continuous immersion in concentrated mineral acids, and gaskets or cable glands containing plasticized PVC are avoided because plasticizer migration reduces the low-temperature impact of the ASA by 20–30 % when tested by ISO 179-1 at -10 °C. Molding for this application uses a two-plate mold with a 2.5 mm nominal wall, 1.5 mm snap-fit louver walls, and four tunnel gates arranged to avoid a weld line across the lens opening. The mold temperature is set at 60 °C; a lower mold temperature of 30 °C produces a dark streaky appearance in the hinge areas after 2,000 h xenon exposure. To hold a transparent PMMA lens without cracking, the snap-fit undercut is limited to 0.35 mm and the hinge is post-flexed after ejection at room temperature, not in the mold. Chemical compatibility follows ASTM D543 with 7 days immersion in 10 % ammonium nitrate solution; mass increase above 1.5 % and surface tack are rejection criteria. Terminal products include weatherproof agricultural data loggers, irrigation valve boxes, and pivot-control housings.

The Warpage Budget Is Set by Four-Gate Filling Patterns

Roof-mounted solar junction box lids and optimizer housings are flattened thin-wall parts in which acceptable out-of-flatness is driven by silicone gasket compression rather than shell strength. ASA WF3301 with a four-gate sequential fill pattern produces lower warpage than a single center gate because melt front velocity is balanced along the long side. The lid is 2.0 mm thick, 140 mm long, and 90 mm wide; a four-valve hot runner with sequential opening intervals of 0.5 s fills the cavity in 1.8 s and reduces flatness deviation to 0.08 mm after annealing at 85 °C for 2 h. If the same lid is molded with a single center pin gate, flatness deviation increases to 0.25–0.35 mm and the gate scar becomes a stress concentration during thermal cycling. The material must not be used as the sole live-part barrier if UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is required; unfilled ASA generally achieves only HB, so flame-retardant grades or a separate metal and PBT carrier are required for the contact side. Thermal cycling per IEC 62790 or module-level IEC 61215 is used to check cracking after 200 cycles from -40 °C to 85 °C; ASA WF3301 is dried to 0.02 % moisture before molding and annealed after ejection to prevent field stress release. Terminal components include PV junction box lids, cable clips, and microinverter housings.

In sheet-fed thermoforming, the critical variable is sag of the heated ASA sheet before the tool closes. ASA WF3301 sheet is extruded on a 90 mm single-screw machine with a polished three-roll stack at 210–220 °C, cooled to a sheet thickness of 4 mm, and reheated to 155–165 °C for forming. If the sheet is heated above 170 °C, surface blistering occurs from remnant moisture even after pellets are dried to 0.02 %, because thick sheet can re-absorb surface moisture before forming. The tool uses vacuum holes only in the base pockets, not on the visible crown, to avoid dimples after forming. The formed RV air-conditioner shroud must survive continuous discharge air at 65 °C and outdoor UV without paint; ASA WF3301 offers this combination without the cracking typical of painted ABS after 3 years of southern exposure. The most common failure is not UV yellowing but edge tear at the mounting holes when the sheet is stretched beyond a 2:1 draw ratio; hole spacings should allow at least 12 mm of flat flange around each mounting insert. Mechanical acceptance uses ASTM D638 tensile stress at yield above 40 MPa and ASTM D256 Izod notched impact at 23 °C above 100 J/m; outdoor color retention uses ISO 4892-3 after 2,000 h with no visible cracks and a ΔE*ab below 2.5.
