Application of FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WE8300

During injection moulding of exterior mirror housings from FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WE8300, a desiccant dryer is set to an air dew point of −30 °C or lower and an inlet temperature of 80 °C, giving a residual pellet moisture target at or below 0.05 % by weight; when ambient relative humidity is above 60 %, residence time is extended from 3 h to 4 h. Barrel zoning starts at 220 °C near the feed throat and rises to 250 °C at the nozzle. The mould surface temperature is held between 50 °C and 70 °C. At 50 °C, a high-gloss SPI/SPE A-2 cavity finish may freeze the flow front too early and produce transverse gloss bands near the gate. Melt decompression is limited to 2–4 mm of screw retraction; greater suck-back pulls air into the nozzle and forms silver streaks in dark solid colours. Cowl vent grilles with rib-to-wall ratios of 0.6:1 are filled through hot-runner valve gates of 1.2–1.8 mm diameter, with sequential opening to shift knit lines away from boss structures. Hydraulic clamp planning uses 3.5–4.5 kN/cm² of projected area for long-flow exterior trim. The moulded mirror housing is evaluated to ISO 4892-2 cycle A at 3,000 kJ/m² for surface chalking, and gloss retention is checked at a 60° geometry under ISO 2813. Tensile yield stress is measured to ISO 527-2 at 50 mm/min; notched Charpy impact to ISO 179-1/1eA is sampled both at the gate-distal surface and across the knit line. In thin-wall tooling, knit-line impact fall-off can reach 10–25 % relative to the solid zone, so gate position is fixed before mould shrinkage allowance is machined. For black mirror housings, carbon black masterbatch is metered at 2–3 wt%; metallic silver uses aluminium flake pigment at 0.5–1.0 wt% with no regrind. Scrap regrind for black parts is capped at 20 % by weight; for metallic silver or light grey body-colour work, regrind is excluded because repeated thermal history changes yellowness enough to exceed a ΔE 1.0 limit under ISO 11664-4. This grade is not intended for direct food-contact or medical-device enclosures.

Where does coextruded ASA capstock fail first in window profile conversion?

Coextrusion of TAIRILAC® ASA WE8300 as a weatherable capstock over a PVC substrate places the first known failure point at the interfacial contact plane inside the feedblock, rather than in final profile calibration. The ASA cap layer is dried to 0.05 % moisture at 80 °C for 2–4 h, and the PVC substrate is dry-blended separately with its heat stabiliser package. A single-screw extruder with L/D of 25–30 and a compression ratio of 2.5–3.0 is used for the ASA layer, with a screen-pack sequence of 40/60/80 mesh to trap gel particles. Melt temperature is held at 220–235 °C for the capstock and 190–205 °C for the PVC core; a temperature delta greater than 30 °C at the feedblock reduces interfacial adhesion because the two melts no longer co-flow at matching viscosity. Cap layer thickness is normally 0.15–0.30 mm over a cellular or filled PVC core with a total wall of 3.0–3.5 mm. White RAL 9010 capstock is compounded with titanium dioxide at 4–6 phr, while dark brown and black shades use carbon black and iron oxide to control weather resistance. The drawdown ratio during calibration is kept below 3:1; above that threshold a low-melt-strength ASA layer can tear at the die land or show thin spots on corners. Melt pressure at the die is maintained in the 80–120 bar range. Calibration uses dry sizing with vacuum at 0.6–0.8 bar and water inlet temperature of 15–20 °C, because rapid quenching of the ASA skin below its glass transition reduces surface gloss. Finished profiles are evaluated for colour shift under ISO 4892-2 after 8,000 h of xenon-arc exposure and for weldability by hot-plate welding at 240–260 °C with 0.15–0.25 mm displacement. The capstock layer must retain its impact after welding; microcracking at the flash line is rejected if a 5× magnification inspection reveals cracks deeper than 0.1 mm. European window profile systems are specified under EN 12608, with colour fastness assessed by grey scale under ISO 105-A02. Edge trim regrind from the coextrusion line is limited to 15 % and is placed only in a non-visible inner core layer, never in the capstock.

A separate processing window appears when FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WE8300 is used for photovoltaic junction boxes and outdoor disconnect housings, where the governing requirement is not low-temperature impact but retention of dimensional stability after rapid thermal shock. The material is dried at 85 °C for 4 h because thick bosses and snap-fit catches increase melt residence time and hydrolytic degradation risk. Barrel melt temperatures from 240 °C to 260 °C are selected for long flow paths around brass inserts; lower melt temperature increases injection pressure and magnifies orientation around the insert. Mould temperature is held at 60–80 °C so that the part can be annealed in the tool for the final 5–10 s of cooling. The cavity is packed at 60–80 MPa holding pressure for 15–25 s depending on wall thickness. Light-grey outdoor enclosures are compounded with titanium dioxide at 3–5 phr and mineral pigments; black variants use carbon black at 0.2–0.4 wt%. Outdoor suitability is verified to UL 746C at the final wall thickness; flammability is normally assessed to UL 94 HB, but if a V-0 requirement is imposed, a dedicated flame-retardant system is required, and halogenated additives can lower UV resistance and cause chalking. Thermal cycling is conducted between −40 °C and 85 °C with terminal hot spots reaching 105 °C; the part is also subjected to IEC 60068-2-14 thermal shock procedures. Comparative tracking index under IEC 60112 must be documented for the pigmented production lot because outdoor pollution degree 3 environments require CTI of at least 600 V, and additives can move the value below that threshold. Post-moulding annealing at 85 °C for 2 h before ultrasonic welding of covers reduces stress cracking around weld beads. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; qualification is therefore conducted coupon-level against the end-use standard rather than extrapolated from general-purpose ASA datasheets.

When moulded-in colour replaces painted ABS in roof rail covers, the gate-freeze time controls gloss variation

When moulded-in colour replaces painted ABS in roof rail covers and tailgate spoilers, the production constraint shifts from paint adhesion to solidification-induced gloss shifts across the flow front. TAIRILAC® ASA WE8300 is processed at 240–250 °C melt temperature and 60–80 °C mould temperature; the low-gloss or high-gloss appearance is fixed by the cavity texture and by how fast the melt freezes at the gate. Long roof rail covers with length up to 950 mm require a mould shrinkage allowance of 0.4–0.7 %. A fan gate of 1.5–2.5 mm thickness is placed at one end to produce unidirectional flow; multiple hot drops increase the number of knit lines and create visible colour variation. Hydraulic clamp planning at 4.5 kN/cm² projected area prevents flash under the high injection pressures needed for a 2.5–3.0 mm wall. Colour tolerance is controlled to ΔE 1.0 under ISO 11664-4; only mineral-based pigments are used in exterior dark greys and blacks, with carbon black loading kept at 0.1–0.5 % by weight because higher loadings may affect weathering gloss. A flexural modulus measured to ISO 178 in the 2,300–2,700 MPa range allows clip retention under vehicle vibration; relaxation is checked at 80 °C for 24 h under a constant-strain fixture. Tailgate spoilers made in two shells are joined by hot-plate welding at 220–240 °C with 0.3 mm melt depth and 0.3 MPa weld pressure before the assembly is exposed to ISO 4892-2 weathering. Scrap from visible exterior components is not used without colour-separated regrind; the maximum regrind is 10 % for non-visible reinforcement ribs. For black only, the level can rise to 20 % if the material is lot-separated and dried to 0.05 % moisture before re-extrusion.

Unlike high-impact ABS, an outdoor agricultural specification for irrigation filter housings introduces simultaneous UV exposure and wet chemical contact that cannot be screened by a single immersion test. The housing is thick-walled at 4–6 mm and is filled through a central sprue into a cold runner; injection speed is profiled to avoid jetting and to keep melt flow fronts convex. Melt temperature is 240–260 °C, mould temperature 60–80 °C, and holding pressure is maintained at 60–80 MPa for 8–12 s before cooling. Threaded ports are designed with a minimum root radius of 0.5 mm to reduce stress concentration under sealant load. The part is ejected on a total cycle of 65–90 s; cycle time is limited by the cooling-rate through the thick boss and not by the filling stage. After ejection, the housing is annealed at 85 °C for 2 h to relieve hoop stress around the threaded port because stress cracking from irrigation-system thread sealants is a known failure mode. Chemical compatibility is evaluated with 10 % nitric acid and commercial phosphoric acid detergent solutions at 40 °C; ASA WE8300 is not specified for concentrated mineral acids, aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, or ketones. UV performance is evaluated to ISO 4892-2; the acceptance criterion is retention of at least 50 % of original notched Charpy impact after 2,000 kJ/m². Impact is measured to ISO 179-1/1eA. Tensile retention after heat ageing at 90 °C for 1,000 h is used to estimate service life of pressure-bearing seats. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so each lot is verified with a burst test at 2.5 MPa internal hydraulic pressure for 1 min with no weeping. Regrind from sprues and rejected parts is capped at 20 % when used in the non-pressure-bearing outer bracket, not in the filter bowl itself.

Thermal Welding Limits in Spa Cabinet Panels and Leisure Equipment

Spa cabinet panels, outdoor furniture shells, and grill shrouds are typically produced from TAIRILAC® ASA WE8300 in a low-gloss mould surface condition because pre-coloured material eliminates paint adhesion failures on exterior edges. The melt temperature is 235–245 °C and mould temperature 50–60 °C; higher mould temperature produces a gloss rise on textured surfaces due to improved replication of the cavity grain. Light exterior colours are compounded with titanium dioxide at 2–4 phr; dark colours use carbon black at 0.2–0.5 % with mineral blue or brown pigments. Fill time for a 700 g shell is 1.5–3.0 s, with cooling time at 40 s before ejection; the gate is a tab gate located on a non-visible underside. Hidden surface regrind is permitted at 30 % for non-visible support ribs, while the visible surface is moulded from virgin material only. Outdoor colour fastness is assessed to ISO 105-B02 blue wool scale 7 for locations exposed to direct sunlight; weathering is run to ISO 4892-2 for 3,000 h with a ΔE 3 limit under ISO 11664-4. Flammability for upholstered outdoor seating can require BS 5852 ignition source 5; unfilled ASA WE8300 may not satisfy that test without a flame-retardant additivation, and published data for this specific configuration is limited. Continuous service temperature in dark colours under direct sun should not exceed 85 °C; a Vicat softening temperature measured to ISO 306/B50 in the 95–105 °C range provides a practical margin only for occasional excursions. Thermal welding of panel edges is performed by hot-plate welding at 220–240 °C; melt depth is limited to 0.3 mm because deeper melt increases flash and reduces edge impact strength. Vibration welding at 200 Hz and 1.0–1.5 mm amplitude is used for large curved joints where hot-plate geometry is impractical. The finished leisure component is checked for odour and fogging in enclosed cabin environments; ASA emits less residual styrene than high-ABS blends but is not classified as low-VOC interior material without specific post-treatment.
