Application of FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WE810P

Black and dark-gray unpainted exterior components molded from FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA WE810P are substituted for painted ABS across cowl vent grilles, wiper arm covers, and exterior mirror shells where OEM acceptance demands long-term gloss retention and low-temperature ductility without secondary coating operations. Compliance for such programs is anchored to ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 or SAE J2527 xenon-arc weathering at exposures of 1,500–2,500 kJ/m² at 340 nm, with color change evaluated by ASTM D2244-23 CIELAB ΔE and specular gloss retention by ASTM D523-14 at 60°; mechanical acceptance is based on ISO 527-1:2019/ISO 527-2:2012, ISO 178:2019, and ISO 180:2019 Charpy impact at 23 °C and −30 °C, while interior-adjacent trims may require FMVSS 302 or ISO 3795 burn-rate compliance. The compound addition ratio on production lines typically begins with 100 parts by weight WE810P, adding TiO₂-laden grey or black masterbatch at 1–3 wt%, a UV absorber/HALS masterbatch at 0.3–0.6 wt%, and an external lubricant/mold-release package at 0.2–0.5 wt%; sprues and runners are reintroduced at 15–20 wt% only after MVR shift under ISO 1133-1:2022 remains within ±1.5 cm³/10 min of virgin material. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h to a residual moisture limit of 0.02 wt% is mandatory when plant relative humidity exceeds 60%, because surface silver streaking at the gate and loss of gloss on textured surfaces are observed above that moisture threshold. Injection molding is performed on reciprocating-screw machines with 20:1–22:1 L/D, 2.0:1–2.5:1 compression ratio, and wear-resistant screw/barrel materials, using melt temperatures of 230–250 °C and mold temperatures of 60–80 °C; the hold-pressure profile is set at 40–60% of peak injection pressure, and valve-gated hot-runner systems are specified where gate blush cannot be tolerated. Production-scale failure modes include gloss variation when mold-temperature drift exceeds 5 °C, knit-line embrittlement when vent depth falls below 0.02 mm, and gate splay when pellet moisture exceeds 0.03 wt%. Finished articles are unpainted mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, A-pillar appliqués, and wiper arm caps.

When Coextruded Capstock Replaces Painted PVC in Window Lineals

When coextruded capstock replaces painted PVC in window lineals, WE810P is processed as the outer weathering layer over a rigid PVC substrate to eliminate post-extrusion lacquering and reduce field repaint cycles. The profile assembly is validated under EN 12608-1:2016 for unplasticized PVC window profiles, with capstock adhesion assessed by ASTM D3359-23 cross-cut adhesion after thermal cycling from −20 °C to 60 °C and after 3,000–5,000 kJ/m² xenon exposure; color retention is measured by ASTM D2244-23 ΔE, and impact after weathering is checked by EN 477 or ASTM D256-23 depending on the export market. The capstock formulation uses 100 parts by weight WE810P, acrylic processing aid at 0.5–1.5 phr, external lubricant at 0.2–0.4 phr, UV absorber/HALS package at 0.6–1.0 phr, and weather-stable color masterbatch at 2–5 wt%; the capstock layer is controlled to 0.15–0.25 mm, which corresponds to 10–15% of total wall thickness for a 2.5–3.0 mm PVC lineal. Coextrusion uses a primary single-screw extruder for PVC and a satellite extruder for ASA with a screw diameter of 45–65 mm and 25:1–30:1 L/D; WE810P melt temperature is maintained at 200–230 °C at the feedblock, while the PVC substrate is run 10–20 °C lower to manage viscosity mismatch. The critical defect mechanism on production lines is capstock waviness generated when melt-pressure variation across the die lip exceeds ±0.5 MPa; delamination at mitre-weld corners appears when capstock thickness drops below 0.12 mm, and yellowing occurs when melt temperature exceeds 240 °C. Published specific capstock adhesion data for WE810P over rigid PVC in all profile geometries is limited, so corner-weld adhesion and weathering retention must be validated on the actual die. End products include exterior window lineals, mullion covers, door sash profiles, and frame cladding.

What Keeps Lawn Tractor Hoods From Fading After 2,000 Hours of Sunlight?

Outdoor power equipment housings molded from ASA are exposed to UV, fuel vapour, and impact in service, and lawn tractor hoods require a combination of low-temperature toughness and color stability after extended sunlight. Weathering acceptance is commonly set at 2,000–3,000 h of SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc exposure, with ΔE below 3.0 under ASTM D2244-23 and 60° gloss retention above 60%; mechanical specifications use ASTM D256-23 Izod notched impact at 23 °C and −20 °C, and ASTM D790-17 flexural modulus for snap-fit and panel stiffness. Flammability for engine-compartment-adjacent panels is certified to UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm. The molding compound is set at 100 parts by weight WE810P with color masterbatch at 1–3 wt%, UV/HALS masterbatch at 0.4–0.8 wt%, and antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 wt%; regrind is limited to 15–20 wt% and is excluded from parts requiring tight gloss tolerance unless MVR stability is confirmed under ISO 1133-1:2022. Injection molding parameters for large hoods with projected area above 0.3 m² use melt temperatures of 230–250 °C, mold temperatures of 50–70 °C, and clamp force estimates of 3.5–5.0 kN/cm² of projected area; sequential valve-gate opening is used on flow lengths greater than 300 mm to prevent knit-line visibility. Vent depths are maintained at 0.02–0.03 mm, and gas-burn marks at end-of-fill are addressed by reducing injection velocity rather than increasing vent depth above 0.05 mm. After molding, two-piece hood shells are joined by hot-plate welding or vibration welding, and welding bead geometry is inspected for melt penetration of at least 1.5 times the local wall thickness. Finished articles include lawn tractor hoods, snowmobile shrouds, generator covers, and grass catcher chutes.

Roof penetration flashings and passive ventilation hoods are thermoformed from extruded WE810P sheet in thicknesses from 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm, where unpainted ASA replaces metal and painted PVC in high-UV roof environments because of resistance to color shift and embrittlement. The applicable compliance set includes ASTM D638-14 for tensile yield and elongation at break, ASTM D790-17 for flexural properties, ASTM D256-23 for impact, UL 94 HB at the end-use thickness, and ISO 4892-2 for xenon weathering at 1,500–3,000 kJ/m²; building-code acceptance in North America may additionally require product-level evaluation under ICC-ES AC174 for plastic roof vents, while EU markets require REACH and RoHS documentation. Sheet extrusion uses 100 parts by weight WE810P, processing aid at 0.5–1.0 wt%, UV absorber/HALS masterbatch at 0.5–1.0 wt%, and RAL 7016 or carbon-black masterbatch at 2–4 wt%; regrind from trim is kept at 10–20 wt% when edge trim remains free of moisture and dust. The extrusion line is configured with a single-screw extruder of 30:1 L/D, screen changer, and sheet die with the die gap set at 110–115% of target sheet thickness; melt temperature is held at 210–240 °C, and the three-roll calendering stack is set to 70–90 °C to control gloss on the exposed surface. Thermoforming is performed at sheet surface temperatures of 160–190 °C, with plug-assisted forming used for deep draws; the mold shrinkage allowance for ASA is 0.5–0.7%. Processing defects observed at production scale include micro-bubbles when pellet moisture exceeds 0.1 wt% before extrusion and corner thinning when sheet surface temperature falls below 160 °C. Finished products include roof penetration flashings, passive roof vents, solar roof jack covers, and chimney chase covers.

UL 746C f1 Outdoor Suitability in ASA Enclosure Resins

Outdoor electrical enclosures for telecommunications and metering are specified in WE810P when the application requires a UL 746C outdoor suitability rating with f1 listing for UV and water exposure, because the f1 designation removes the need for additional UV protective coatings on the molded housing. The resin is evaluated under UL 746C after 1,000–5,000 h xenon-arc or UV exposure with retention of tensile impact and flammability properties; the enclosure as assembled is tested to IEC 60529 for IP65 or IP66 depending on gasket compression, and surface color is checked under ASTM D2244-23 after weathering. Flammability for outdoor telecommunications boxes is commonly UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm; if V-0 performance is required, WE810P should not be assumed compliant without documented supplier certification, and an FR-modified ASA/PC or FR ABS grade is typically substituted. The molding formulation uses 100 parts by weight WE810P, weather-stable grey RAL 7035 or RAL 9005 masterbatch at 2–5 wt%, antioxidant at 0.2–0.5 wt%, and mold release at 0.2 wt%; conductive carbon black or antistatic additives are not introduced into this grade for outdoor enclosures because changes in surface resistivity and ultraviolet absorption may shift UL 746C retention behavior. Injection molding uses melt temperatures of 230–250 °C, mold temperatures of 60–80 °C, and filling pressures sized for wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.5 mm; threaded brass inserts are installed by ultrasonic insertion, and boss wall thickness is kept at 2.0–2.5 times insert diameter to prevent stress cracking. A documented production failure mode is radial cracking at insert bosses when insertion speed exceeds 200 mm/s or when the boss has sharp internal corners; pre-drilling and corner radii above 0.5 mm are used to reduce hoop stress. End products include outdoor telecommunication junction boxes, electricity meter enclosures, antenna radomes, and irrigation controller housings.

Twin-Sheet Thermoforming of ASA for Cab Roof Panels

Twin-sheet thermoforming of WE810P sheet is employed for off-highway cab roof panels and combine console covers where a double-wall structure delivers stiffness without a heavy steel support frame. The compliance package for this segment includes ISO 4892-2 weathering at 3,000–5,000 kJ/m², ASTM D638-14 tensile properties, ASTM D790-17 flexural creep modulus, and ASTM D256-23 impact at −20 °C; interior-facing surfaces are checked for odor and fogging under SAE J1756-06 or ISO 6452 when the part encloses an operator cab. The extruded sheet formulation uses 100 parts by weight WE810P, UV absorber/HALS package at 0.5–1.0 wt%, color masterbatch at 2–5 wt%, and regrind at 10–20 wt% only when the regrind is dried and screened to remove fines below 0.5 mm. Twin-sheet forming is run with top-sheet surface temperature at 170–190 °C and bottom-sheet surface temperature at 160–175 °C, using aluminum molds with circulating water channels; blowing pressure is held at 0.4–0.6 MPa, and plug assist is used only on the top sheet to avoid wall thinning at deep draw ratios above 1:1. The process window is narrow: if top-sheet temperature exceeds 195 °C, gloss variation appears on flat roof sections; if it falls below 170 °C, corner cracking occurs during forming, and if cooling water temperature rises above 25 °C, cycle time increases with no gain in dimensional stability. Finished parts include tractor cab roof panels, combine console covers, off-highway fender extensions, and utility vehicle headliner shells.
