Application of FCFC TAIRILAC® ASA GP535A

When Unpainted ASA Replaces Painted ABS in Exterior Cowl Grilles

When unpainted exterior trim is molded from TAIRILAC® ASA GP535A, the compounding batch commonly recorded on the line specifies 100 phr of virgin resin, 10–20 wt% of closed-loop regrind from sprues and runners, and 1.5–3.0 wt% of a styrenic-compatible color concentrate whose carrier resin melt flow rate is maintained within 10–15 g/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022 to prevent visible color streaking in long-flow cowl grilles. A processing lubricant based on montan ester wax is added at 0.2–0.5 wt% only when the injection fill pressure exceeds 95 MPa; at addition levels above 0.5 wt%, high-shear dispersion of the lubricant at the gate can produce surface haze on grain-matched mold textures because the high-flow ASA phase reaches a lower apparent viscosity than the additive carrier. The same batch sheet excludes polyethylene-carrier masterbatches above 0.3 wt% because incompatible polyolefin domains reduce notched Izod impact at knit lines and are not detected by standard melt-flow testing alone.

On the shop floor, a 120–180 ton hydraulic or servo injection machine using a 20:1 L/D general-purpose styrenic screw with a non-return valve cushion of 4–7 mm is set for nozzle melt temperature 230–250 °C; rear barrel zone 210–220 °C, middle zone 225–235 °C, front zone 240–250 °C. The tool is heated to 50–70 °C with turbulent water flow, and fan gates of 1.5–2.0 mm thickness are positioned at the base of ribs rather than at visible surfaces. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h to a dew point of -30 °C is mandatory whenever storage relative humidity has exceeded 60%; residual pellet moisture must be <0.02 wt% to avoid hydrolysis-induced surface splay at flow fronts. For properties, the parts are tested to ISO 527-2:2012, ISO 178:2019, ISO 180:2023, and ISO 4892-2:2013, while flammability documentation is provided under UL 94:2023 at 1.5 mm HB. Automotive-specific weathering follows SAE J2527:2017 with OEM-defined ΔE and gloss retention limits; published data for specific OEM limit values for this exact GP535A formulation is limited. In production, these parts appear as cowl vent grilles, mirror housings, A/B/C pillar covers, wiper arm caps, antenna shrouds, and roof ditch moldings.

Outdoor telecom enclosures rated for UL 746C f1 service impose a contradictory demand: the molded housing must retain mechanical impact resistance at low temperatures and resist color shift after prolonged xenon-arc exposure without being painted. A compound based on TAIRILAC® ASA GP535A for such housings uses 100 phr virgin resin, 2.0–4.0 wt% of a lightfast inorganic or organic color concentrate, and 1.0–2.5 wt% of a UV stabilizer masterbatch only where the end-use specification extends beyond 5 years of direct equatorial sun exposure; below that service window, the acrylic ester elastomer phase is used without additional stabilization. Clean sprue/runner regrind is limited to 15 wt% because higher closed-loop ratios in hot-runner multi-drop tools have been observed to reduce tensile elongation at break by 5–8% on the second heat history, as measured by ISO 527-2:2012.

Processing across a 350–500 ton injection machine with sequential valve-gated hot runners requires a melt temperature of 235–245 °C, a mold temperature of 40–60 °C, and wall thickness held between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm to avoid jetting at the valve gate. Shot weights greater than 1.2 kg demand screw speeds of 50–70 rpm and a backpressure of 4–7 bar; valve gate tips are kept at 240 °C with gate diameter 1.2–2.0 mm. Compliance documentation references UL 94:2023 HB at 1.5 mm, UL 746C:2019 f1 for outdoor suitability, IEC 60529:2013 for enclosure flatness and seal integrity, and ISO 4892-2:2013 for weathering. REACH Regulation 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU declarations accompany export shipments. The grade is not suited to applications requiring V-0 or 5VA flammability ratings; published data for a halogen-free V-0 compound based on this exact GP535A matrix is limited. Terminal part types include telecom access covers, solar inverter terminal boxes, surveillance camera sun shields, outdoor disconnect switch enclosures, and rail-car platform terminal housings.

Why Capstock Coextrusion Demands Separate Melt Streams at the Die?

ASA capstock coextrusion over rigid PVC or foamed PVC for building profiles fails if both materials are processed in the same screw because the ASA layer must reach 230–245 °C while the PVC core degrades above 200 °C in the same residence time. The capstock compound is therefore mixed from 100 phr TAIRILAC® ASA GP535A, 2.0–5.0 phr acrylic processing aid, 3.0–7.0 phr rutile titanium dioxide, 1.0–2.0 phr calcium stearate/paraffin lubricant, and 0.2–0.8 phr hindered phenolic antioxidant. The ASA skin is extruded through a 45–75 mm single-screw extruder with a 24:1 L/D barrier screw, then metered by a gear pump into a feedblock that produces a cap layer of 150–300 µm; the rigid PVC core is separately plasticized at 180–190 °C. A rheological imbalance greater than 30% in apparent viscosity between the ASA and PVC at shear rates of 100–500 s⁻¹ produces interfacial flow instability that appears as surface roughness exceeding Ra 0.35 µm on the finished cap layer, a condition sometimes misread as gel contamination.

Die design in production lines typically uses a coat-hanger geometry with a land length of 30–50 mm and melt pressure variation across the width held below 20–30 bar; when the capstock edge pressure falls below that window, edge encapsulation fails and the PVC core becomes visible after weathering. Combined melt enters a calibration sleeve at 25–40 °C with an air gap of 15–30 mm before embossing or grain transfer. Compliance for building profiles references EN 12608-1:2016 for PVC profile definitions and tolerances, ISO 4892-2:2013 for weathering, ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus after capstock lamination, and ASTM D648-18 for heat deflection under load of the capstock layer. End products include window lineals, fence pickets, soffit panels, exterior wall cladding planks, and roof edge trims; the ASA capstock is not intended as a structural layer.

For garden tools and power-equipment housings exposed to simultaneous stone impact, fuel drips, solar infrared, and cold-morning handling, TAIRILAC® ASA GP535A is compounded at 100 phr with 10–25 wt% of clean recycled ASA/PC regrind, 2.0–4.0 wt% color concentrate, and 0.2–0.5 wt% processing stabilizer; the regrind fraction is kept uniform because variations greater than 5 wt% between lots shift apparent viscosity and create short-shot conditions in gas vent ribs. Injection molding on a 180–250 ton machine uses melt temperature 235–250 °C, mold temperature 40–60 °C, packing pressure 70–85 MPa, and screw speed 60–80 rpm; thick bosses up to 6 mm are gated through subrunners of 2.0–3.5 mm diameter to maintain a melt cushion of 5–8 mm. The high-flow GP535A permits fill-to-pack switchover at 98% fill without excessive flash, but the tool must hold parting line gap below 0.03 mm because the low melt viscosity tends to burr at ejector pins if guide alignment wear exceeds 0.1 mm.

Qualification tests for garden equipment housings generally include ISO 180:2023 Izod notched impact at -20 °C, ASTM D256-10 for customer-facing North American data, ISO 4892-2:2013 weathering after 2,000 h, and UL 94:2023 HB at 1.5 mm. Contamination control is critical because 1.5 wt% residual polyamide or PBT in the regrind stream creates knit-line delamination and a 20–30% loss in notched impact; the machine is purged with an acrylic/styrenic purge compound between material changes. Terminal part types include string trimmer motor housings, leaf blower fan shrouds, lawn mower discharge chutes, hedge trimmer gearboxes, and portable generator shrouds.

Humidity Absorption, Drying Time, and Gate Freeze in HVAC Panel Molding

Humidity absorption in ASA GP535A pellets stored at 23 °C and 60% RH remains below 0.20 wt%, but storage above 80% RH for more than 48 h makes forced desiccant drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h mandatory; target residual moisture is <0.03 wt%. The processing failure mode observed on humidified material is splay and silver streaking across the front fascia of outdoor condenser guards, accompanied by a 10–15 °C apparent loss in Vicat softening temperature due to void formation during ISO 306 method B50 testing. For beige or grey HVAC panel compounds, the formulation record uses 100 phr GP535A, 1.5–3.0 wt% color concentrate, 0.2–0.4 wt% processing stabilizer, and up to 15 wt% clean regrind from hot-half runner systems; regrind above 20 wt% causes visible gloss reduction on polished mold surfaces of Ra ≤ 0.05 µm.

Injection molding on a 300–650 ton accumulator-assisted hydraulic machine uses fill time 2–5 s, hold pressure 65–80 MPa, and screw backpressure 3–6 bar. With a wall thickness of 2.5 mm and mold temperature 50–70 °C, gate freeze time is estimated at 6–10 s; switching from fill to hold before 95% fill generates gate blush and gas marks at the fan gate. Compliance documents reference IEC 60335-1:2020 for appliance safety, UL 94:2023 HB at 1.5 mm, UL 746C:2019 f1 for outdoor polymer evaluation, ISO 4892-2:2013 for xenon weathering, and ASTM D648-18 for heat deflection temperature. Terminal part types include outdoor air-conditioner front panels, heat pump side covers, fan guards, and condenser coil access covers.

In marine deck hardware and RV roof accessory moldings, the appearance specification typically rejects gloss nonuniformity, visible knit lines, and waviness on large surfaces before weathering is even measured, which pushes toolmakers toward polished mold inserts with surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.05 µm and sequential gating on parts longer than 400 mm. A compound based on TAIRILAC® ASA GP535A is specified at 100 phr with 0.8–1.5 phr of a low-bloom UV absorber package, 0.2–0.5 phr of high-molecular phenolic antioxidant, and 2.0–4.0 wt% white or black outdoor-grade color concentrate. Sulfur-bearing heat stabilizers are excluded because they volatilize at ASA melt temperatures above 240 °C and produce odor in closed cabins; regrind contaminated with PVC sealing scrap above 0.5 wt% is excluded due to acid gas formation at melt temperatures >240 °C and the resulting surface etching.

Molding of RV vent lids, hatch trim rings, antenna mounts, and solar panel brackets typically takes place on 150–350 ton machines with melt temperature 240–250 °C, mold temperature 50–70 °C, and staged packing pressures of 85 MPa for 4 s followed by 55 MPa for 8 s to minimize sink marks at thick bosses. Qualification references ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus, ISO 180:2023 for notched Izod impact at 23 °C and -20 °C, ISO 4892-2:2013 for weathering after 2,500 h, ISO 75-2:2013 for heat deflection, and REACH Regulation 1907/2006 for material declarations. The parts are non-load-bearing exterior accessories and are not used for structural hatch covers; published data for GP535A in load-bearing marine structural components is limited.
