On a coextrusion blown-film line configured with a 400 mm annular die and 2.0 mm die gap, ExxonMobil Exceed mLLDPE 3527PA is metered into the sealant skin of a five-layer structure for frozen-food packaging. The pelletized ethylene-hexene metallocene linear low-density polyethylene enters a 75 mm 30:1 L/D grooved-feed extruder equipped with a 100/200/100 mesh screen pack; melt temperature is held between 205°C and 220°C, and a barrier screw with Maddock mixing is used to homogenize the narrow metallocene molecular-weight distribution. The sealant formulation at the die is 80 wt% Exceed 3527PA and 20 wt% high-pressure LDPE with a melt index of 2.0 g/10 min; the LDPE fraction lowers backpressure and shifts seal-initiation response without eliminating hot tack. For direct food contact, the sealant layer must comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) olefin polymer provisions and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I, with supporting migration documentation under EC 1935/2004. On the production floor, bubble stability is maintained at a BUR of 2.3:1 to 2.7:1, frost-line height 700–900 mm, and layflat width near 1,450 mm. At a total gauge of 45 µm, the sealant surface is corona-treated to 38–42 mN/m before winding. Heat-seal strength is evaluated under ASTM F88/F88M-21, hot tack under ASTM F1921-18, and dart impact on converted pouches under ASTM D1709-16a. Terminal pouch types include IQF vegetable bags, seafood packaging, and ice-cream lidding film. Field observations on five-layer lines show that dropping melt temperature below 195°C raises melt pressure above the typical 300–400 bar processing window and destabilizes the frost line, while sustained operation above 240°C accelerates gel formation in the metallocene layer. EVA or ionomer re-grind is avoided in this sealant layer because residual acid functionalities promote crosslinking and visible gel specks. Seal initiation is generally observed between 100°C and 110°C at 0.5 s dwell time and 2 bar seal pressure, although published hot-tack data for this specific barrier-layer configuration remain limited.
Monolayer heavy-duty sack film extrusion on a 65 mm grooved-feed extruder with 350 mm die produces layflat tube from Exceed 3527PA without a coextrusion step. The screw uses a 25:1 L/D barrier design and a melt pump ahead of the die; melt temperature is controlled at 210°C ± 5°C, with barrel zone set points profiled from 180°C at the feed throat to 220°C at the head. When melt-pressure oscillation appears, the formulation is adjusted with 2.5 wt% processing aid and 1.5 wt% slip/antiblock masterbatch. The base sack formulation is 75 wt% Exceed 3527PA and 25 wt% LDPE film resin; in lower-cost constructions, 20 wt% post-industrial LLDPE re-grind may replace part of the LDPE provided gel count does not exceed 10/m² on 100 µm film. Bubble stability is held at a BUR of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1, frost-line height 500–700 mm, and film thickness 100–150 µm with gauge uniformity within ±5%. The downstream process feeds the slit film into conversion lines for industrial bags; corona treatment is applied at 38–42 mN/m only when printing is required. Compliance for non-food industrial packaging is documented under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU where the sack is used for regulated electrical or electronic goods logistics. Terminal products include construction aggregate sacks, resin export sacks, and fertilizer bags. Incoming melt index is checked under ASTM D1238 at 190°C/2.16 kg, density under ASTM D1505 at 23°C, and film tear resistance under ASTM D1922-15. The main field failure mode is bubble sag at high gauge when the frost line is allowed to drift above 900 mm, producing uneven web tension and poor slit-edge sealability on later conversion.

In tandem extrusion lamination for flexible packaging, Exceed 3527PA functions as the molten polymer layer between 12 µm aluminium foil and 20 µm oriented polypropylene. The pellet feed is 100 wt% Exceed 3527PA for standard sealant coating runs; if neck-in exceeds 25 mm at the die edge, the formulation is shifted to 85–90 wt% Exceed 3527PA with 10–15 wt% LDPE at 0.918 g/cm³ density, or the air gap is reduced to 140 mm. The extruder is typically a 90 mm 30:1 L/D single-screw feeding a T-slot die, with melt index 3.5 g/10 min permitting draw-down to coating weights of 15–25 g/m². Melt temperature at the die lip is maintained at 300–320°C to develop oxidative adhesion to the aluminium foil, while the chill roll is controlled at 15–20°C. The laminate is stored for 24 h before seal-strength testing to allow secondary crystallinity to stabilize. Compliance for direct food use requires FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I, with overall migration limits under EC 1935/2004; when reverse-printed metallized PET replaces foil, the sealant layer is also tested for primary aromatic amine migration under the applicable migration test protocols. Terminal products include dry beverage stick packs, condiment sachets, snack laminates, and pharmaceutical blister lidding. The operating boundary is narrow: below 290°C melt temperature, adhesion to foil becomes inconsistent and the web develops rough edges; above 25°C chill-roll temperature, blocking and gauge bands occur. Published data for this specific 3527PA configuration on tandem lamination lines are limited, but low-neck-in draw-down behaviour is consistent with metallocene LLDPE at 25 g/m² coating weight.
A three-layer agricultural blown-film line with 2,800 mm die diameter and 1.8 mm die lip gap produces 180 µm greenhouse covers with Exceed 3527PA placed in the outer film layer. The layer formulation is 25 wt% Exceed 3527PA, 25 wt% ethylene-vinyl acetate containing 14 wt% vinyl acetate, and 50 wt% high-pressure LDPE; ultraviolet stabilizer masterbatch is added at 3 wt% and anti-drip additive at 1 wt%. The extruder set points range from 200°C to 215°C, the BUR is held at 2.0:1, and the frost-line height is set to 900 mm. The metallocene phase contributes puncture resistance and seal consistency, while EVA provides low-temperature flexibility and anti-drip activity. The film is tested for tensile properties under ASTM D882-18, dart impact under ASTM D1709-16a, and accelerated weathering under EN 13206:2017 or ISO 4892-2:2013; agricultural plastic compliance is documented with REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and relevant national agricultural film lifecycle standards. Terminal products are multi-season greenhouse cladding, low tunnel covers, and silage cover base film. The principal production failure occurs at EVA-rich ratios when die temperature drifts above 215°C, producing bubble instability, gauge bands, and reduced machine-direction tear resistance. Films without anti-drip additive are not used for sealed greenhouse structures because condensation droplets reduce light transmission and create crop damage. Published data for this specific 3527PA/EVA/LDPE ternary blend at 180 µm under arid-climate solar loads is limited.
Double-bubble extrusion of collation shrink film applies Exceed 3527PA in the sealing skin because its metallocene molecular-weight distribution provides a low seal-initiation point without the branched molecular tail that produces excessive shrink force. The primary tube is extruded on a 50 mm 28:1 L/D extruder with a 150 mm die at 200–220°C, quenched, reheated to 85–95°C, and oriented transversely by internal air pressure at a TD ratio of 3.5:1 and MD ratio of 3.0:1. The layer formulation is 70 wt% Exceed 3527PA and 30 wt% LDPE at 2.0 g/10 min; the LDPE fraction controls bubble tension and improves MD orientation uniformity across the web. Free shrink is measured under ASTM D2732-14, shrink tension under ASTM D2838-18, and seal strength under ASTM F88/F88M-21. Compliance for retail multipack film in direct food contact falls under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c), and the film is checked for overall migration under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I. On the double-bubble line, the critical control point is the orientation temperature: below 85°C the primary tube tears during transverse orientation, and above 95°C the TD free shrink falls below the 60% specification minimum while haze increases from surface roughening. Terminal products include bottled-water multipack overwrap, canned-goods collation film, and club-store tray overwrap. This configuration is not used for high-clarity shrink-sleeve labels; published data for that specific application with 3527PA is limited, and cast coextruded shrink-sleeve films are selected instead.
For bag-in-box liquid packaging, Exceed 3527PA is incorporated as the heat-seal layer in coextruded liner film used for 10–20 L dairy, flavour concentrate, and edible-oil pouches. The liner is a three-layer or five-layer structure with EVOH or metallized PET as the barrier, tie layers, and a sealant layer containing 70 wt% Exceed 3527PA and 30 wt% LDPE; where electrostatic discharge control is required, anti-stat masterbatch is added at 0.5 wt% of the sealant layer. The coextrusion process uses die gap 1.5–2.0 mm and melt temperature 210–230°C; the finished liner is heat-sealed to a spout at 120–130°C for 1.0 s. Compliance for food contact requires FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c), EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I, and EC 1935/2004; dairy-sector converters also request sensory migration documentation because low-molecular-weight oxidation products at high processing temperatures can produce off-taste. Terminal products are bag-in-box liners for dairy, wine, post-mix syrup, flavour concentrate, and cooking oil. The processing boundary is defined by taste and seal integrity: sustained melt temperature above 240°C increases the risk of oxidized volatile formation, while seal-bar temperature below 120°C produces incomplete spout-seal fusion on 70–90 µm liner film. Published data for this specific 3527PA-containing bag-in-box structure are limited to converter-specific sealing trials rather than public regulatory dossiers.

ExxonMobil Exceed mLLDPE 3527PA is a metallocene-catalysed ethylene-hexene linear low-density polyethylene supplied in pellet form for blown film and cast film conversion. The manufacturer’s published typical values list a density of 0.927 g/cm³ when tested in accordance with ASTM D1505 or ASTM D792, a melt index of 3.5 g/10 min under ASTM D1238 or ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190°C/2.16 kg, and a peak melting temperature near 119°C by differential scanning calorimetry. The PA suffix identifies a formulated product containing a processing-aid package intended to reduce die-lip melt fracture and lower apparent melt viscosity at high shear; it does not indicate polyamide content. Because the metallocene active sites produce a narrower molecular weight distribution and more uniform hexene branching than conventional Ziegler-Natta catalysis, the resin is positioned between high-toughness Exceed grades and higher-density ethylene-hexene LLDPE grades for stiffness-critical polyethylene film structures.
The metallocene catalyst system in 3527PA produces a lower fraction of low-molecular-weight chains and a more regular short-chain branching distribution than conventional Ziegler-Natta LLDPE of similar density and melt index. This structural difference reduces low-molecular-weight extractables and can lower seal initiation temperature relative to a C4-LLDPE of equivalent melt index, although seal initiation temperature is not a fixed material property and must be mapped on the converting line. The narrower molecular weight distribution also reduces melt elasticity, which is beneficial for dimple-free melt exiting a spiral mandrel die but can reduce bubble stability under high-stalk blown film conditions. In practice, the resin is frequently blended with 5 wt% to 15 wt% high-pressure LDPE or LDPE-rich reclaim to increase melt tension when bubble flutter occurs on lines without internal bubble cooling.
Compared with a conventional Ziegler-Natta octene LLDPE of similar melt index and density, 3527PA generally provides a cleaner organoleptic profile and lower extractable content, which is relevant for direct food contact and high-speed form-fill-seal packaging. However, the same narrow molecular weight distribution reduces shear thinning relative to a broader-distribution polymer, so screw torque and melt temperature must be monitored more closely at high output. Low-molecular-weight species that act as internal lubricants in Ziegler-Natta resins are less prevalent; the processing aid is therefore incorporated to compensate at the die lip rather than throughout the melt.
In blown film at 50 µm gauge, typical comparison data between metallocene ethylene-hexene LLDPE and conventional C4-LLDPE show an improved balance of dart impact, Elmendorf tear, and stiffness when test methods ASTM D1709, ASTM D1922, and ASTM D882 are applied. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and film property differences are highly dependent on blow-up ratio, frost line height, die gap, and cooling-air temperature. Converters should not substitute 3527PA directly into a C4-LLDPE formulation without first confirming gauge uniformity and heat-seal performance on the target line.
On conventional LDPE/LLDPE blown film lines, 3527PA is processed at melt temperatures of 190°C to 230°C. A spiral mandrel die with a die gap of 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm is typical for film thicknesses between 20 µm and 200 µm. Blow-up ratios are generally set from 2.2:1 to 2.8:1, depending on the desired tear balance and film flatness. Frost line height should be maintained at 3 to 5 die diameters when running a 150 mm to 250 mm die with a single-lip air ring and internal bubble cooling. Taller frost lines can improve impact strength but may increase gauge variation if air flow is unstable; lower frost lines can improve clarity but may reduce dart impact and increase film blocking.
The fluoropolymer processing aid in the PA formulation requires shear conditioning to form a durable coating at the die lip. After start-up or after a die lip purge, a conditioning period of 30 to 60 min at reduced output is commonly used to establish the coating before line speed is increased. If sharkskin melt fracture returns during a long run, the cause is often die-lip contamination, an incompatible masterbatch, or a reduction in shear at the die lip caused by an extreme drop in output. The processing aid can be deactivated by some amine-based additives; antifog and antistatic masterbatches containing amine chemistries should be tested for compatibility before use. If surface moisture condenses on cold pellets stored at relative humidity above 60%, bubble instability and gels can occur. Under these conditions, drying at 50°C to 60°C for 2 h to 4 h in a desiccant hopper dryer is recommended, although polyethylene does not absorb moisture into the polymer matrix in the same manner as polar resins.
Melt temperature should not exceed 240°C. Prolonged residence time above 250°C can initiate oxidative chain scission and crosslinking, leading to gel formation and discoloration. The recommended barrel temperature profile for a 60 mm grooved-feed single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1 is 170/180/190/195/200°C from hopper to adapter, but the actual profile must be adjusted for screw design, output, and ambient conditions. The material is not intended for processing on screws designed primarily for high-shear PVC or for extrusion conditions requiring melt temperatures above 240°C.
| Parameter | Set point or range | Basis or equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Melt temperature | 190–230°C | Melt thermocouple at adapter |
| Die gap | 1.5–2.5 mm | Spiral mandrel die |
| Blow-up ratio | 2.2:1–2.8:1 | Bubble diameter / die diameter |
| Frost line height | 3–5 die diameters | Single-lip air ring with internal bubble cooling |
| Drying | 50–60°C for 2–4 h | Desiccant hopper dryer, only if pellet surface condensation is present |
In heavy-duty sacks of 120 µm to 170 µm thickness, replacement of a conventional butene-copolymer LLDPE of 0.918 g/cm³ to 0.920 g/cm³ density with 3527PA increases modulus and puncture resistance because of the higher density and more regular hexene placement. The same substitution can reduce dart drop impact if the film is not down-gauged; the end user should therefore evaluate the complete balance of stiffness, impact, tear, and moisture vapour transmission under ASTM F1249 before changing the formulation. In three-layer heavy-duty sack coextrusions, 3527PA is often used in the skins while the core contains post-industrial reclaim. The higher density of the skin layers improves moisture vapour barrier relative to lower-density LLDPE skins, but the oxygen transmission rate remains typical of polyethylene and is too high for oxygen-sensitive products without an additional barrier layer such as EVOH or polyamide. Oxygen transmission should be measured according to ASTM D3985 at the intended film thickness and relative humidity.
For lamination films, 3527PA can serve as a sealant layer or stiffness layer in extrusion-laminated and adhesive-laminated structures. Polyethylene surfaces require corona treatment or plasma treatment to achieve acceptable adhesion to solvent-based or solventless polyurethane adhesives. A wetting tension of 40 mN/m to 42 mN/m measured according to ISO 8296 is commonly specified, although the required level depends on the adhesive chemistry and the time between treatment and lamination. The processing aid in 3527PA can migrate to the film surface over time; lamination converters should verify that surface treatment remains stable through printing and laminating line speeds. If the film is used as a food-contact sealant, the converter must confirm that the final structure meets the overall migration limits of EU Regulation (EC) No 10/2011 and the relevant conditions of use under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c)3.2a.
In cast film extrusion, process conditions differ from blown film. Melt temperatures of 230°C to 250°C are often used for LLDPE cast film to improve line speed and web flatness, but the upper temperature limit of 240°C for 3527PA should not be exceeded without evaluating residence time and antioxidant depletion. The processing aid remains active in cast film dies, but the shear field in a flat die differs from that in a spiral mandrel die. Published data for cast film performance of this specific grade is limited; laboratory cast film trials are required before commercialisation in high-speed cast stretch or cast lamination applications.
Regulatory conformance for the base polyolefin is summarised in the following matrix. The compliance status of the final film depends on the full formulation, including masterbatches, processing aids, inks, adhesives, and recycled content. A certificate of compliance from the supplier should be obtained for the specific lot and the intended food-contact conditions. The matrix below is not a replacement for supplier-specific documentation.
| Regulation or standard | Designation or clause | Application boundary |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. food contact | FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c)3.2a | Olefin polymers for food contact; conditions of use depend on food type and temperature |
| EU food contact | EU Regulation (EC) No 10/2011 | Overall migration limit 10 mg/dm²; specific migration limits apply to additives and monomers |
| REACH | Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 | Polymer and monomer registration; industrial handling should minimise respirable dust if pellets are ground |
| RoHS | Directive 2011/65/EU | Not directly applicable to packaging unless the film is incorporated into electrical or electronic equipment; heavy-metal limits apply to pigment masterbatches |
Recycling of 3527PA is compatible with conventional polyethylene reclaim streams, but the processing aid can be partially lost during washing and repelletising. Post-industrial reclaim addition rates of 20 wt% to 40 wt% are typical in non-food-contact heavy-duty sacks, depending on the contamination level of the reclaim. The higher density of 3527PA relative to lower-density LLDPE reclaim means that blends of 3527PA and LDPE reclaim can show density drift over repeated recycling loops; density should be monitored by ASTM D1505 if the recycled stream is used in stiffness-critical applications. The grade is not biodegradable and should not be used in applications where intentional degradation or compostability is required. For direct food contact, recycled content is generally excluded under current EU food-contact regulation unless the recycling process is specifically authorised.
