Application of ExxonMobil Exact VLDPE 4011

Exact VLDPE 4011 is processed as an ethylene-based plastomer with a nominal density of 0.888 g/cm³ when tested under ASTM D1505 and a melt flow index of 1.1 g/10 min under ASTM D1238-20 at 190°C/2.16 kg. The melting endotherm under ASTM D3418-21 falls below 75°C, which produces a low seal initiation threshold but also imposes narrower temperature control during extrusion, drying, and compounding than is typical for ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers. As an olefin polymer, the grade falls within the class of materials addressed by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) for food-contact articles, provided the converted article meets extractive limitations and end-use conditions; EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 requires migration testing of the finished article, not the pellet. These properties define the downstream scenarios that follow.

In a nine-layer blown film line, the sealant skin layer is extruded from Exact VLDPE 4011 alone or in a 70:30 blend with a linear low-density polyethylene having a density of 0.918 g/cm³; the blend ratio is reduced toward the neat plastomer when a die-lip build-up threshold is detected after more than 12 hours of continuous operation, because low-molecular-weight fractions can accumulate at the exit lip and generate transverse gauge bands above ±4%. Industry compliance for food-contact pouches rests on FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, while medical packaging requires the converted pouch to meet ISO 11607-1:2019 after process validation. The layer is processed through a grooved-feed extruder with a barrel temperature profile from 160°C to 210°C, an adapter/screen temperature no higher than 220°C, and a die zone held at 210°C to limit melt-temperature overshoot; screw speed and output are balanced to hold melt temperature within ±5°C because seal initiation drift occurs when the skin layer overheats. Heat seal initiation temperature, measured by ASTM F88/F88M-21 on a 50 mm-wide specimen sealed at 0.5 MPa for 1.0 s, is commercially reported below 100°C for a 50 µm sealant thickness; published data for this specific configuration is limited, and validation must be performed on the actual film structure. Terminal finished products include frozen vegetable pouches, fresh-cut produce bags, dry powder stick packs, and woven polypropylene laminate inner liners where low-temperature sealability prevents leakage in high-speed vertical form-fill-seal lines.

What Controls Dispersed Phase Particle Size When Exact 4011 Is Added to Homo-PP?

The dispersed phase morphology in impact-modified polypropylene is controlled less by screw speed alone than by the viscosity ratio between the plastomer melt and the homopolymer matrix at the injection molding shear rate, typically between 10² s⁻¹ and 10³ s⁻¹. Addition ratios of 10 wt% to 30 wt% are introduced into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D of 40:1; the plastomer is fed downstream after the polypropylene has reached 200°C to limit excessive chain scission from peroxide trace residues and to preserve a discrete elastomer phase below 2 µm in size. Compliance for automotive interior parts requires conformity with REACH Annex XVII, absence of substances listed in the Global Automotive Declarable Substance List, and flammability characterisation under ISO 3795:1989 or FMVSS 302 where applicable. The downstream process includes pelletising through a strand die at 190°C, drying to below 0.05% moisture before injection molding, and molding at a clamp force sufficient for wall thicknesses from 1.2 mm to 2.5 mm; notched Izod impact testing under ASTM D256-23 is used to verify the toughening effect. Terminal products include door panel substrates, centre console components, and small appliance housings exposed to repeated mechanical loading.

During dry blending of aluminum trihydrate and magnesium dihydrate at total filler loadings between 150 phr and 180 phr, the polyolefin matrix phase requires an elastomer with a melting point below 75°C to preserve elongation after filler dispersion; Exact VLDPE 4011 is added at 10 phr to 25 phr, with a maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene compatibilizer at 3 phr to 5 phr. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 60754-1 and IEC 60754-2 for halogen acid gas, IEC 61034-2 for smoke density, and EN 50363-1 for insulation and sheathing compound requirements; fire performance of the finished cable is determined under IEC 60332-1-2 or IEC 60332-3-22 depending on cable class. Mixing is conducted in a Buss kneader or a twin-screw extruder with a maximum compound temperature of 175°C, because aluminum trihydrate releases water above 190°C and magnesium dihydrate decomposes near 340°C, creating steam-induced porosity and reduced dielectric strength. The compound is then extruded onto copper conductors through a crosshead die with a draw-down ratio between 1.5:1 and 2.0:1, and the sheath is tested for tensile strength and elongation after ageing under IEC 60811-501. Terminal products include low-voltage control cables, industrial power cable sheathing, and railway transit vehicle wiring where low-smoke zero-halogen performance is specified.

When Exact 4011 Replaces Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate in Extrusion Coating

When Exact 4011 replaces ethylene-vinyl acetate in extrusion coating, the absence of vinyl acetate eliminates acetic acid formation at high melt temperatures but removes the polar adhesion mechanism to paper and aluminum foil; converters compensate with corona discharge and ozone treatment at the die-to-substrate gap. The coating is applied as a 100 wt% plastomer layer or as a 70:30 blend with low-density polyethylene processed at melt temperatures from 280°C to 320°C, a die gap of 0.6 mm to 0.8 mm, and a chill roll temperature of 10°C to 15°C. Food-contact compliance is determined under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, while seal strength of the finished laminate is tested after 24 hours ageing under ASTM F88/F88M-21 and adhesion under ASTM D1876-08(2015)e1. Terminal products include coated paper for confectionery wraps, snack food laminates, and soap wrapper substrates where low-temperature sealing is required on high-speed packaging machines.

Hot Melt Adhesive Viscosity Stability Under Nitrogen Blanketing

In non-reactive hot melt adhesives for packaging, Exact VLDPE 4011 is added at 10 wt% to 25 wt% to a formulation containing 30 wt% to 45 wt% hydrogenated tackifier resin, 15 wt% to 20 wt% paraffin wax, and 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt% antioxidant; the plastomer shifts the low-temperature adhesion without the acidic decomposition products associated with vinyl acetate copolymers. Compliance for indirect food-contact packaging adhesives is established under FDA 21 CFR 175.105, and the finished adhesive system must also satisfy REACH Annex XVII restrictions for polycyclic aromatic compounds in added tackifiers. Production is carried out in a jacketed stainless steel mixer at 160°C to 180°C with a nitrogen purge of 3 L/min to 5 L/min and an agitator tip speed below 3 m/s to prevent shear-induced overheating; viscosity is monitored per ASTM D3236-15 at 177°C before drumming. Terminal products include case and carton sealing, magazine insert bonding, and tray erecting where adhesion to low-surface-energy corrugated liners is required.
