Application of Ethydco ADVANCENE MDPE EE-3914-AAH

On commercial three-layer blown-film lines equipped with a 400 mm to 500 mm annular die, dual-lip air ring, and internal bubble cooling, Ethydco ADVANCENE MDPE EE-3914-AAH is inserted into the core layer of heavy-duty sack structures at core weight fractions from 55 wt% to 70 wt%, with metallocene LLDPE or LDPE-rich skins forming the remaining layers. The core layer is processed at melt discharge temperatures between 190 °C and 210 °C, the die gap is held at 1.8 mm to 2.4 mm, and the blow-up ratio is maintained between 2.2:1 and 2.8:1. Frost-line height is set at 4 to 6 die diameters to stabilise the high-stalk bubble. On a 65 mm grooved-feed extruder with L/D of 30:1, screw speed is limited by bubble respiration and stalk oscillation rather than extruder torque when melt pressure exceeds 270 bar at the screen pack. Raising the core weight fraction above 70 wt% improves bending stiffness but reduces machine-direction tear resistance under ASTM D1922-15; processors offset this by increasing skin-layer low-MI metallocene LLDPE, which in turn raises die pressure. The terminal articles include heavy-duty chemical shipping sacks, dunnage airbags, and industrial refuse liners in thicknesses from 70 µm to 120 µm. Finished-film acceptance is controlled by puncture resistance measured under ASTM D5748-19, dart impact under ASTM D1709-22 Method A, and Elmendorf tear under ASTM D1922-15. For food-contact packaging, the converter must confirm grade-specific compliance under 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU Regulation No 10/2011; verification of overall migration under EN 1186-1:2002 is conducted on the finished laminate rather than the pellet. For EU industrial packaging, supplier declarations under REACH Article 33 and packaging heavy-metal limits under EU Directive 94/62/EC are verified alongside food-contact status.

Which Melt Fracture Constraints Appear When the Grade Is Run Without Fluoropolymer Processing Aid?

High-stalk bubble operations that omit a fluoropolymer-based processing aid often record sharkskin melt fracture at the die lip when apparent shear stress in the annular die gap exceeds 0.14 MPa to 0.18 MPa, depending on the metallocene catalyst architecture and the specific melt index recorded under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C/2.16 kg. The surface defect raises film haze above 12% measured under ISO 14782:1999 and weakens the weld line, which reduces hot-tack performance on form-fill-seal equipment used for dunnage air chambers. On a production machine, processors observe a threshold output reduction of roughly 15% to 20% before melt fracture clears unless a PPA masterbatch is dosed at 300 ppm to 600 ppm during blending. The PPA is added in the core layer only in multilayer structures; if it migrates into the skin layer, heat-seal initiation temperature can shift upward by 3 °C to 5 °C, which requires revalidation of seal strength under ASTM F88/F88M-21. Where line owners avoid processing aids because of food-contact or industrial-spec concerns, die-lip shear stress is reduced through a die gap increase to 2.4 mm or an increase in die temperature to 215 °C, but both actions degrade bubble stability and can reduce dart impact by up to 8%.

In extrusion lamination of woven polypropylene fabric, EE-3914-AAH is applied as the sealant layer at an air gap of 150 mm to 250 mm, a chill-roll temperature of 15 °C to 25 °C, and a molten web temperature of 290 °C to 320 °C measured at the die exit. The melt curtain must remain stable across high line speeds; commercial lines running 250 m/min on 10×10 plain-weave PP with a coating weight of 20 g/m² require die-bolt adjustments at 5 mm intervals to prevent edge bead. Adhesion to the woven substrate is governed by oxidative degradation of the polyethylene melt; peel strength above 2.5 N/15 mm under ASTM D1876-08 is obtained only when the air gap is set so that the melt surface reaches a carbonyl index value above 0.4 as measured by ATR-FTIR. Chill-roll finish is not neutral; a matte finish lowers coefficient of friction under ISO 8295:1995 but reduces gloss under ASTM D2457-21, so line configuration is fixed by the final tarpaulin or FIBC liner specification. Terminal products are FIBC liners, tarpaulin laminates, and construction wraps. When torque-driven process conflict arises between melt temperature and coating weight, up to 10 wt% of LDPE with a melt index of 7 g/10 min may be added to the MDPE layer to lower melt pressure; however, the addition reduces abrasion resistance and seam strength in FIBC applications. For food-contact FIBC liners, compliance is validated on the laminate under EU Regulation No 10/2011 overall migration limits with simulant D1 for aqueous contact.

    Extrusion Blow-Moulded ESCR-Limited Small Containers

Continuous blow-moulding operations producing 5 L to 60 L agrochemical and industrial-liquid containers use EE-3914-AAH where ESCR under ASTM D1693-15 Condition B, 100% Igepal, is the limiting design criterion. A typical continuous blow-moulding extruder with 25:1 L/D and a barrier screw is operated with barrel zones from 170 °C to 195 °C and a head temperature of 195 °C to 205 °C. The parison swell measured on the line is between 35% and 60%, requiring die and mandrel adjustments when the container wall thickness is below 1.2 mm. Welded pinch-off integrity is validated by drop-impact testing at −18 °C per ISTA 2A or equivalent; low pinch-off thickness below 0.35 mm produces brittle cracking that is independent of resin ESCR. For containers requiring top-load resistance above 250 kgf, up to 30 wt% high-density polyethylene with a density of 0.955 g/cm³ is melt-blended with the MDPE fraction; the exact ESCR reduction is grade-dependent, and published data for this specific MDPE/HDPE blend ratio is limited, so successive ESCR coupon validation under ASTM D1693-15 Condition C is mandatory. Terminal products include agricultural chemical bottles, detergent canisters, and non-hazardous liquid liners. If the brand requires food-contact status, the container must comply with 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and the filling temperature must not exceed 70 °C to avoid panel deformation.

When Welding Geomembrane Panels in Low-Temperature Conditions, Weld-Window Shifts Matter

In low-temperature panel welding, EE-3914-AAH sheet in thickness from 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm is evaluated for wedge-weld and extrusion-weld performance at ambient panel temperatures below 10 °C. Production-scale wedge welders with digital temperature control operate between 300 °C and 420 °C at travel speeds of 1.5 m/min to 3.0 m/min; the actual weld window narrows by 20 °C to 30 °C when panel surface temperature falls below 5 °C. Peel resistance under ASTM D6392-12 is typically specified above 60 N/cm for high-density geomembrane, but for MDPE the specification may be lowered to 45 N/cm only if shear elongation under ISO 13953:2001 exceeds 50%. Oxidative induction time is measured under ISO 11357-6:2018 at 200 °C in carbon-black-loaded sheet to control long-term embrittlement in exposed pond liners. Terminal articles include landfill liner, temporary containment, and tailings pond membranes. The main operational boundary is thermal degradation at the weld root; if wedge temperature exceeds 420 °C, carbonyl index increases and stress-crack resistance degrades under ASTM D5397-19 single-point notched constant tensile load testing. Published fusion-window data specific to this metallocene MDPE grade is limited; trial welds on production equipment are mandatory before large-scale field deployment.

Rotational moulding with EE-3914-AAH is conducted after grinding to 35 mesh (≤500 µm particle size); oven temperatures are maintained between 260 °C and 320 °C, and the mould rotation ratio is set at 4:1 primary to secondary axis. The peak internal air temperature inside the mould is a better control variable than oven setpoint; acceptable densification occurs when PIAT reaches 190 °C to 210 °C, after which the part is cooled at 10 °C/min to 15 °C/min under forced air to minimise warpage. On biaxially filled water-storage tanks with wall thickness from 6 mm to 12 mm, reverse warpage occurs if cooling is not controlled from both inner and outer surfaces, especially at flat sidewall areas exceeding 0.5 m². Terminal products include chemical storage tanks, kayak hulls, and playground structures. UV-stabilised outdoor formulations commonly require hindered amine light stabiliser addition at 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt% and a UV absorber at 0.05 wt% to 0.15 wt%; the final outdoor weathering performance is assessed under ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle A for at least 2,000 h with a ΔE below 5 and retained elongation above 80%. Food-contact rotational moulded parts for drinking water require separate compliance under NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, not solely EU Regulation No 10/2011; grade-specific certification must be obtained before installation.
