Application of ELIX Polymers ABS ELIX ABS P3H-AT

ELIX ABS P3H-AT is processed as an ABS injection moulding grade that is desiccant-dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h to residual moisture below 0.02 % before melt processing. The unfilled copolymer is characterised by melt volume-flow rate measured under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg; lot-specific MVR and tensile modulus per ISO 527-2 should be used to set fill speed, switch-over position, and holding pressure. The following application scenarios cover process-defined uses in which the grade is either moulded directly or compounded with controlled additive loadings.

Automotive exterior trim parts moulded from ELIX ABS P3H-AT are taken through a chromic acid etch line because the butadiene phase at the moulded surface is selectively oxidised to create mechanical anchoring sites for electroless metal deposition. The relevant regulatory framework includes Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life vehicles, REACH Regulation 1907/2006 Annex XVII, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and FMVSS 302 for horizontal burn rate of interior materials. Plating quality is specified under ASTM B604-88(2015), and peel adhesion is quantified with ASTM B533-85(2013). In feedstock preparation for exterior plated parts, colour masterbatch is added at 0.5–2.0 wt% only if a dark base is required, and gate/runner regrind is kept to ≤10 wt% of total shot weight because oxidised gel fragments and contamination from reground sprues produce pits after etching. The melt is processed at 230–250 °C, the tool surface is held at 40–70 °C, and a screw with L/D 20:1–25:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 is used to maintain melt homogeneity without excessive shear heating. After moulding, parts are racked and run through the electroplating sequence of chromic acid/sulfuric acid etch at 60–68 °C for 5–10 min, neutralisation, Pd/Sn activation, electroless nickel at 30–35 °C, electrolytic copper at 20–25 µm, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, microporous nickel, and chromium at 0.25–0.5 µm. On this grade, peel strength values between 0.8 N/mm and 1.8 N/mm are typical for properly etched ABS; peel below 0.8 N/mm usually indicates under-etching, insufficient butadiene surface concentration, or etch bath aging, while over-etching above 10 min or above 70 °C weakens the surface layer and generates pit corrosion. Finished components include radiator grilles, mirror housings, door handles, instrument cluster bezels, and exterior pillar covers.

What restricts maximum continuous-use temperature in domestic appliance cover panels?

In white goods applications, continuous surface temperature—not impact load—is the limiting variable for ELIX ABS P3H-AT cover panels. The unfilled copolymer has a heat deflection temperature below 100 °C under 1.82 MPa loading, which means the material should not be placed within direct contact of heater boxes, steam generator outlets, or compressor discharge lines unless thermal isolation is provided. Appliance compliance references include IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30.2 for resistance to heat and fire, UL 94 HB for enclosure flammability, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and REACH SVHC screening under 1907/2006. For household appliance panels, a colour masterbatch is dispensed at 2–4 wt%, heat stabiliser/antioxidant is compounded at 0.1–0.3 wt% where continuous service temperatures exceed 60 °C, and processing aid is used at 0.2–0.5 wt% for long-flow console covers with rib-to-wall ratios below 0.6:1. Regrind addition up to 25 wt% is tolerated in internal non-appearance brackets, but visual control panels and high-gloss front covers are run with virgin material or ≤10 wt% clean runner regrind to avoid silver streaks and gloss banding. The melt temperature at the nozzle is set to 220–240 °C, the mould wall is held at 40–60 °C, and holding pressure is maintained at 40–70 MPa; clamp-force planning uses 2–4 tonnes/cm² of projected area for wall sections of 2.0–2.8 mm. Hot-runner manifold temperatures are kept at 230–240 °C, and valve-gate tips are not allowed to fall below 210 °C because cold slugs at the gate produce visible flow lines on textured surfaces. Dimensional control in consoles uses shrinkage allowances of 0.4–0.7 % in flow direction and 0.3–0.6 % transverse to flow, with gate position moved to thick bosses to reduce sink marks. Finished components include washing machine top consoles, refrigerator door end caps, vacuum cleaner bodies, air purifier front shells, and dryer control panels.

Because chromium electroplating of ABS depends on selective oxidative attack of the butadiene phase, sanitary components made from ELIX ABS P3H-AT are processed as virgin feedstock rather than compounded mixtures, with solid density in the range 1.04–1.06 g/cm³ compared with zinc alloy and brass alternatives. Regulatory assessment includes REACH Annex XIV and Annex XVII, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and dimensional requirements in EN 248:2002; where the plated component is not a wetted surface in contact with drinking water, NSF/ANSI 61 is not automatically triggered, but external surfaces near water outlets still require the manufacturer’s corrosion test programme. For electroplated sanitary parts, regrind content above 5–10 wt% produces subsurface voids and flow lines that become visible etch pits after chromic acid treatment, so gate and runner regrind is either excluded or segregated and qualified by plating adhesion trials. If a black base colour is needed to conceal exposed edges, carbon black masterbatch is held at 0.5–1.0 wt% and verified for conductivity interference with electroless initiation. Melt temperature is maintained at 230–245 °C, and the mould surface temperature is kept at 50–70 °C to increase surface gloss and reduce weld-line depth at knit lines. The parts enter the same etch-and-electroless sequence described for automotive trim, with copper/nickel/chromium layer thicknesses designed for service condition class SC 3 or SC 4 under ASTM B604-88(2015). Corrosion resistance is evaluated in neutral salt spray per ISO 9227:2017 for 48–96 h and by thermal cycling between −30 °C and +80 °C to detect plate cracking at weld lines and screw bosses. Uncured acetoxy silicone sealants should be kept away from ABS components during installation because acetic acid release can cause environmental stress cracking in high-gloss plated rims. Finished products include faucet handles, shower head shells, soap dish bases, escutcheon plates, and heated towel rail end covers.

Electrostatic discharge control in thin-wall enclosures.

Where UL 94 HB is acceptable for a non-fire enclosure, telecom and consumer electronics housings based on ELIX ABS P3H-AT are produced without flame-retardant additives; components that form part of a fire enclosure under IEC 62368-1:2023 clause 6.3 instead require a flame-retardant ABS compound or a different polymer. For electrostatic discharge protection, conductive carbon black is compounded at 5–15 wt% or an antistatic masterbatch is added at 1–3 wt% to reduce surface resistivity into the range 10⁹–10¹² Ω per IEC 61340-2-3. The loading must be tuned for the specific tool because carbon black above 12 wt% typically raises melt viscosity and injection pressure by 15–25 %, narrows the moulding window, and lowers notched impact strength. Thin-wall covers of 1.2–1.6 mm wall thickness are injection moulded at melt temperatures of 235–250 °C, mould temperatures of 60–80 °C, and injection velocities of 150–300 mm/s to avoid freeze-off before snap-fit and rib features fill. Hot-runner valve-gate systems with sequential opening are preferred over cold runner drops in multicavity tools to reduce gate blush and balance flow to adjacent cavities. Before thin-wall production, the unfilled melt volume-flow rate should be confirmed per ISO 1133-1:2022; lot-to-lot MVR shifts of ±2 cm³/10 min can move fill time by several tenths of a second in long-edge-gated chassis frames. For ESD-protected parts, surface-resistance mapping is performed across the moulded part per IEC 61340-2-3 because weld lines and gate regions can show local resistivity variation. EMI shielding is not provided by the unfilled ABS matrix; conductive coatings or metalised films are applied where radiated emissions limits under CISPR 32:2015 require shielding. Finished parts include router housings, set-top box frames, desktop printer chassis, power strip covers, and portable instrument cases.

Under IEC 60601-1:2005+A1:2012+A2:2020, external enclosures for medical electrical equipment are classified as applied parts only when contact is intended; housing materials still require biocompatibility assessment per ISO 10993-5:2009 for in vitro cytotoxicity and ISO 10993-10:2010 for skin sensitisation if patient or operator skin contact is expected. ELIX ABS P3H-AT in base resin form is not automatically certified for these tests; finished-device testing must be performed on the moulded, colour-matched, and post-processed enclosure. Cleanroom injection moulding for medical applications uses no regrind, and colour masterbatch is limited to ≤1 wt% to minimise extractables and surface residues. Mould release agents are avoided or restricted to silicone-free food-grade/medical-grade external lubricants to preserve label adhesion and disinfection compatibility. The melt temperature is set at 220–240 °C, the mould temperature at 50–70 °C, and production is conducted in ISO 14644-1:2015 Class 8 or better cleanroom conditions. The material is not suitable for repeated steam autoclave exposure above 121 °C because the heat deflection temperature of unfilled ABS under load is below 100 °C; low-temperature hydrogen peroxide gas plasma or ethylene oxide sterilisation is more compatible, with residue testing required after EtO. Gamma sterilisation at 25–50 kGy can cause yellowing and a measurable shift in impact properties, so dose mapping and colour-stability trials are mandatory before release. Components produced in this category include ultrasound cart shells, patient monitor bezels, infusion pump housings, and diagnostic instrument covers.

For indoor air distribution components, continuous air temperature below 60 °C is the boundary condition that permits the use of ELIX ABS P3H-AT. The unfilled material is generally not suitable for plenum-rated spaces because it is not normally offered with an ASTM E84 Class A flame-spread/smoke-developed classification; building code compliance for plenum installations must be verified separately. Electrical conduit and cable management components follow IEC 61386-1:2008, visible HVAC parts fall under UL 94 HB and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and UV-stable off-white grades are tested for colour change under ISO 4892-2 when exposed to daylight. In the compounding window for indoor structural parts, antistatic masterbatch is added at 0.5–1.5 wt% to reduce dust attraction, titanium dioxide or pigment masterbatch at 1–2 wt% for light-stable surfaces, and antioxidant/UV stabiliser at 0.1–0.3 wt% for components adjacent to windows or UV lamps. Injection moulding of long narrow grille vanes requires a fill time below 1.5 s to avoid flow hesitation and gloss variation; melt temperature is 220–240 °C, mould temperature is 40–60 °C, and holding pressure is 30–60 MPa. Centre-gated fan runners or tab gates at the base of each vane are used to reduce weld-line depth at high-stress corners. Shrinkage allowance in tool design is 0.4–0.6 %. Final items include air supply diffuser vanes, return-air grilles, fan coil front panels, electrical cable troughs, and surface-mounted conduit fittings.

    More Introduction

ELIX Polymers ABS ELIX ABS P3H-AT is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade supplied by ELIX Polymers, S.L. The product is positioned for automotive interior and exterior components in which elevated heat resistance, controlled odour, and dimensional stability are specified. The resin is produced via continuous mass polymerisation and is typically available as natural cylindrical pellets; black and custom-colour versions are obtained either through the manufacturer’s colouring service or by masterbatch addition. Density is measured according to ISO 1183-1, and melt volume-flow rate is assessed at 220 °C/10 kg using ISO 1133-1:2022. Because high-heat ABS formulations are compounded with specific antioxidant and process stabiliser packages, actual lot values should be taken from the batch certificate and should not be extrapolated from standard ABS data.

What drying and melt-temperature constraints apply to P3H-AT before injection moulding?

Pre-drying is mandatory at 80 °C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30 °C to −40 °C when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. Material exposed to high humidity in bulk storage may require 4–6 h; the accepted residual moisture target for high-heat ABS is below 0.02% by Karl Fischer titration or equivalent. Pellets that remain open at the hopper throat beyond four hours should be blanketed with dry air to prevent moisture regain.

Melt temperature measured at the nozzle should be maintained between 240 °C and 270 °C, with upper excursions limited to short cycles. Barrel zones are typically profiled from 200 °C at the feed throat to 250–260 °C in the metering section. If the melt exceeds 270 °C for more than one complete residence time, the polybutadiene phase undergoes oxidative degradation, producing surface splay, colour shift, and acrid odour. Residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 5–8 min; in stops beyond 10 min, the barrel should be purged with general-purpose polystyrene or an acrylic purging compound, not with PVC or acetal-based purge materials.

Back pressure of 5–15 bar hydraulic is used to homogenise melt and disperse masterbatch; excessive back pressure above 20 bar raises shear heating and accelerates degradation. Decompression should be kept to 2–5 mm to limit air entrapment. A stable melt cushion of 3–6 mm is recommended to reduce shot-to-shot variation. Mould temperature is controlled at 60–80 °C for unpainted grained surfaces; mould temperatures below 40 °C reduce gloss and cycle time but increase residual stress and the risk of cracking around bosses and heat-staked inserts.

When estimating clamp force, a starting assumption of 3.0–5.0 kN/cm² of projected part area may be used for ABS. A 250 t machine is therefore suitable for multi-cavity tools with total projected area up to approximately 500 cm² at the 5.0 kN/cm² assumption. Screws with 20:1–25:1 L/D ratio and compression ratio of 2.4:1–3.0:1 are common in converting P3H-AT; a non-return valve with good sealing is required to maintain cushion stability and avoid short shots at thin ribs.

Thermomechanical Test Designations Applicable to P3H-AT

Specification statements for P3H-AT should always identify the test method and conditioning history. Tensile modulus is determined according to ISO 527-2 at 1 mm/min; Charpy notched impact is measured using ISO 179-1/1eA, typically at 23 °C and −30 °C; Vicat softening temperature is recorded under ISO 306/B50 with a 50 N load and 50 °C/h heating rate. Heat deflection temperature is often quoted at 1.80 MPa under ISO 75-2/A, but HDT is a single-point temperature, not a continuous-use rating. Mould shrinkage is measured on a 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaque according to ISO 294-4, but tool compensation should also account for flow path, wall thickness, and surface texture.

Within the ELIX high-heat ABS portfolio, P3H-AT is commonly positioned between P2H-AT and P4H-AT in heat resistance and melt viscosity. Compared with P2H-AT, P3H-AT provides a higher Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306/B50 but may require a slightly higher melt temperature or higher injection pressure to fill identical thin-wall geometries. Compared with P4H-AT, P3H-AT typically offers a wider processing window and better melt fluidity but a lower thermal plateau; selection between these grades should be resolved through injection-moulding simulation using measured shear-viscosity data, not by Vicat temperature alone.

The ISO 2580-1 designation system for ABS moulding and extrusion materials provides the formal classification block on the manufacturer certificate. Incoming inspection should include density, melt volume-flow rate, and ash content if regrind contamination is suspected. For parts that are to be electroplated or painted, the certificate should also be checked for lot-to-lot variations in volatile content, because condensation on the cavity surface alters surface tack and adhesion.

When P3H-AT replaces a lower-Vicat ABS in unpainted interior trim, what must be validated beyond the datasheet?

Material substitution must not be based solely on Vicat and MVR. The practical processing window narrows as heat resistance increases. Thin-wall flow-length ratio should be checked on an injection mould with 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, and 1.2 mm spiral channels at target melt and mould temperatures. For P3H-AT, the flow-length wall-thickness ratio typically falls below that of standard high-flow ABS; tools designed for standard ABS may need gate location changes or higher packing pressure to avoid sink marks at boss locations. Rib thickness should be held from 40% to 60% of the adjacent wall section, with ejection draft of 0.5–1.0° on textured surfaces.

Unpainted interior applications may require low emission. The part should be evaluated for VOC and SVOC using VDA 278, odour using VDA 270, and fogging using DIN 75201-B or ISO 6452. Acceptance values are OEM-specific; no universal pass criterion exists. Test specimens should be conditioned at 23 °C/50% relative humidity for at least 48 h before fogging or odour testing, because shorter conditioning leads to false volatile readings. P3H-AT may be more resistant to thermal ageing than standard ABS but does not eliminate the need for UV stabilisation in upper instrument panel surfaces exposed to direct sunlight.

Direct substitution of a standard ABS by P3H-AT should also include shot volume and melt residence evaluations. Standard high-flow grades often tolerate lower injection speed and lower mould temperature; P3H-AT may develop characteristic flow lines, weld lines, and internal stress if the tool is not temperature-controlled uniformly. The higher heat resistance is not a continuous-use temperature. Injection moulders should distinguish between Vicat temperature, HDT, and long-term thermal ageing according to ISO 188 or manufacturer thermal ageing data.

The distinction between P3H-AT and lower-heat standard grades is not merely Vicat elevation. Higher-heat ABS usually requires a lower polybutadiene content or a modified SAN matrix, which can reduce low-temperature impact and melt fluidity. Therefore, when moving from a standard grade to P3H-AT, low-speed crash-related deformation should be evaluated using ISO 6603-2 for puncture behaviour if the part functions as a structural interior component. Similarly, paint adhesion should be checked with cross-cut ISO 2409 and steam-jet DIN 55662 for painted parts, because surface polarity and mould release can alter adhesion. Coatings should be aged 72 h at room temperature after topcoat application before cross-cut testing.

Weld-line tensile yield retention should be measured in a dual-gate tensile bar under ISO 527-2. In high-heat ABS, weld-line strength can fall below the bulk value; melt temperature and mould temperature are the primary levers to improve weld-line integrity. Adding excessive injection speed may generate shear heating but does not reliably improve weld-line strength if the mould wall is too cold. For grained interior parts, weld lines should be relocated below the part surface where possible.

For exterior trim applications, black parts must be compounded with a UV package meeting OEM outdoor weathering requirements such as SAE J2412 or ISO 4892-2; the base resin alone is not suitable for unpainted exterior weathering. Painted exterior parts require additional validation of paint adhesion after 80 °C hot-water immersion and thermal cycling. If the grade is supplied without a UV-stabilised black masterbatch, weathering performance is the responsibility of the converter or colour masterbatch supplier, not the base resin manufacturer.

Lot certificates for P3H-AT should be cross-checked against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Current supplier confirmations are required for SVHC content under Article 33. Flammability is not an intrinsic high-heat property; P3H-AT should be tested under UL 94 if an electrical or appliance application requires a rating. Standard ABS without flame retardant is usually HB, not V-0. Storage should be at 10–30 °C in unopened bags away from direct sunlight and rain. Incoming moisture content, MVR, and tensile modulus should be revalidated if material has been stored beyond the supplier’s stated shelf life or if bags have been punctured.
