Pre-drying of ELIX ABS P2H-AT for a chrome-plated radiator grille shell is executed in a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a return-air dew point of -35 °C or lower; residual moisture is verified at ≤ 0.05 wt% by ISO 15512:2019 at the press hopper. The material is moulded neat at 100 wt% for first-shot production, with only dedusted and metal-separated sprue/runner regrind from the same lot reintroduced at ≤ 15 wt%; higher regrind fractions alter the coefficient of linear thermal expansion by more than 5% and produce visible plate pop-off during thermal shock evaluations. Melt is maintained at 245–260 °C at the nozzle, with mould wall temperatures of 70–75 °C on the appearance side and 55–65 °C on the core side; a single-cavity grille tool typically requires 900–1,300 t clamp force, and switchover from injection to hold is set at 95% of screw stroke rather than time to reduce part weight variation. After moulding, the substrate is stress-relieved at 75 °C for 2 h before rack loading. The electroplating line uses a chromic acid etch at 380–400 g/L CrO₃ with 380–400 g/L H₂SO₄ at 65–68 °C for 12–18 min; this oxidises surface butadiene domains to create mechanical adhesion sites. Subsequent deposition comprises electroless nickel at 0.3–0.5 µm, acid copper at 20–35 µm, semi-bright nickel at 8–12 µm, bright nickel at 5–8 µm, and microporous chromium at 0.25–0.5 µm. Completed parts are tested against ASTM B604-15 and ISO 4525:2002 for decorative electroplated coatings on plastics; acceptance criteria include no blistering after thermal cycling from -40 °C to +90 °C with 30 min dwell, and no peel when a knife test is applied at gate and weld-line zones. Published peel-strength data for this specific P2H-AT etch configuration is limited; therefore control plans rely on thermal-cycle adhesion and cross-sectional microscopy rather than a single numerical peel limit. The terminal articles are bright chrome radiator grille shells and brand emblem shells.
With a nominal wall below 2.0 mm, filling pressure increases by approximately 25–30% over a 2.5 mm wall at the same flow length, so P2H-AT is processed at 235–250 °C melt, 50–60 °C mould, and 800–1,100 bar hydraulic injection pressure to hold fill time within 1.4–1.8 s. The resin is predried to ≤ 0.05 wt%; if hopper residence time exceeds 4 h at relative humidity above 60%, splay on the visible grain surface is observed downstream even when initial moisture is within specification. Formulation for interior trim uses a colour masterbatch at 1.5–2.0 wt% and a silicone-containing scratch-additive masterbatch at 0.8–1.2 wt%, both in ABS carrier to avoid weld-line embrittlement at the boss-to-wall junction. No external ethylene-based impact modifiers are added above 1.0 wt% because notched Izod impact after heat ageing at 105 °C for 500 h can fall by more than 20% in production-scale samples under ISO 180. The part is filled through a sequential valve-gate manifold with shear rates kept below 25,000 s⁻¹; screw recovery uses a 20:1 L/D three-zone screw with 4–8 bar back pressure. Emission compliance is controlled by VDA 277 for VOC, VDA 275 for formaldehyde release, and DIN 75201-B for gravimetric fogging; for a typical lower B-pillar trim, OEM acceptance values of total VOC ≤ 100 µg/g and fogging condensate ≤ 2 mg are used as internal control limits, though final limits are part-specific. The terminal articles are unpainted cowl-side trim panels and lower B-pillar trims where surface grain replication must remain stable under 80 °C solar load without print-through from the reinforcing rib pattern.
A mould-surface replication of less than 0.5 µm Ra on a refrigerator display fascia is not controlled by the ABS grade alone; it depends on cavity steel finishing, hot-drop temperature profile, and mould-temperature stability across a shot-to-shot range of ± 2 °C or better. P2H-AT is dried to ≤ 0.05 wt% and run at a melt temperature of 230–245 °C; the lower band is selected for high-flow fascia frames with 1.5 mm nominal wall, while the upper band is reserved for deeper flow paths requiring lower injection velocity. The formulation uses a precomposed colour masterbatch at 2.0 ± 0.5 wt% and a low-bloom lubricant masterbatch at 0.2–0.5 wt%; the latter prevents ejection scuffing on SPI A2 polished cavities, but above 0.5 wt% it migrates to the mould surface and reduces in-mould label adhesion. Processing on a 500–700 t machine with a hot-runner valve gate system keeps fill time at 1.2–1.6 s and holding pressure at 55–70 MPa; gate seal is verified by maintaining screw cushion between 1.5–3.0 mm rather than by timer alone. Household appliance fascias must satisfy IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire testing at 650 °C for 30 s where IEC 60335-1 clause 30.2 applies, and flame classification is typically UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm. Restricted substance control is maintained under RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Annex XVII. The terminal articles are refrigerator display frames, control panel fascias, and washing machine front-control bezels supplied without secondary painting.

Feed-stream trials on a 1,500 t injection line for painted exterior mirror shells show that a regrind-to-virgin blend of 12–18 wt% does not alter melt-pressure peak when regrind is dried to ≤ 0.05 wt% and screened through a 250 µm mesh; however, the same blend above 18 wt% shifts the capillary melt viscosity at 1,000 s⁻¹ by more than 8%, causing visible sink around the boss and reducing paint cross-cut adhesion after 40 min at 90 °C bake. Moulding parameters are set at 240–250 °C melt, 55–65 °C mould, and 60–80 MPa hydraulic hold pressure. After demoulding, shells are degreased with an alkaline cleaner at 50 °C for 3 min, rinsed with demineralised water at 0.5 MPa, and dried in filtered air at 60 °C. The paint system is a two-component polyurethane basecoat/clearcoat with total dry film thickness of 25–45 µm; an adhesion promoter is required only when surface tension measured by ISO 8296 dyne test is below 38 mN/m. Film adhesion is checked by ISO 2409 cross-cut with tape class ≤ 1 allowed at flat areas, while stone-chip resistance is evaluated to SAE J400 at -20 °C with test parameters defined by the OEM paint specification. Exterior painted trim is tested for weathering under ISO 4892-2 Method A xenon arc; colour shift ΔE ≤ 2.0 after 1,500 h is used as an internal validation limit. The terminal article is a painted door mirror housing and upper roof side trim; material remains compliant with REACH Annex XVII restrictions and no intentionally added SVHC above 0.1 wt%.
P2H-AT is converted into electroplated handle rosettes, soap dish shells, and shelf brackets using a mould temperature of 55–65 °C and a melt temperature of 235–255 °C; multi-cavity tools with 8 or 12 cavities require a hot-runner balance within ± 5% fill time to prevent visible weld-line displacement and plate dotting. The resin in this downstream sector is moulded unpigmented at 100 wt%; any colour masterbatch above 0.3 wt% causes non-uniform chromic acid attack because pigment particles act as micro-masking sites, leading to micro-voids after electroless nickel. Stress-relief annealing is performed at 75 °C for 2 h before plating; processors qualify residual stress by thermal cycling because no single solvent-immersion pass/fail value is accepted across all platers. The etch stage uses 400 g/L CrO₃ and 350 g/L H₂SO₄ at 66 °C for 14–16 min; etch time is held inside a ± 1 min window because butadiene swelling and oxidation at the surface follows a logarithmic response, and the difference between under-etch and over-etch is often below 2 min in production baths. Activation uses palladium chloride at 25–35 ppm Pd, then electroless nickel at 0.3–0.5 µm, acid copper at 30–40 µm, bright nickel at 5–8 µm, and chromium at 0.25–0.5 µm; the copper thickness is increased relative to exterior automotive work because bathroom accessory shells undergo repeated 24 h steam-humidity testing. Plated parts are evaluated under ISO 4525 and ASTM B604-15; thermal-cycle adhesion testing is performed from -30 °C to +80 °C for three cycles with 8 h dwell per cycle. Restricted substance compliance applies to the finished plated article under RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH SVHC screening. The terminal outputs are electroplated bathroom shelf brackets, soap dish shells, and handle rosettes.

ELIX Polymers ABS ELIX ABS P2H-AT is a heat-stabilized unfilled acrylonitrile butadiene styrene injection-moulding grade in the ELIX P-series. The material is supplied as pellets in natural and selected black variants, and is intended for screw plasticising injection moulding. Its composition consists of a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase and a polybutadiene-grafted rubber dispersed phase. The product is evaluated under the ISO 2580-2 designation system for ABS thermoplastics. Nominal producer-published values measured on injection-moulded specimens include a density of 1.05 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183-1, a melt volume-flow rate of 18 cm³/10 min at 220 °C under a 10 kg piston load according to ISO 1133-1, a tensile modulus of 2200 MPa and tensile yield stress of 43 MPa according to ISO 527-2, and a Charpy notched impact strength of 25 kJ/m² at 23 °C according to ISO 179-1/1eA.

The listed values are producer nominal values and are not simultaneous batch guarantees. Differences in gate location, mould temperature and conditioning can shift tensile and impact results by more than 10%. Batch-specific certificates should be requested where OEM material standards impose mandatory minimum values for heat deflection or notched impact after thermal ageing.
Relative to general-purpose unfilled ABS grades with Vicat B/50 values in the 90 °C to 93 °C range, P2H-AT moves the softening boundary upward to 96 °C without requiring a mineral filler. The heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa is 94 °C, making it suitable for interior components that undergo short thermal excursions during paint-bake or solar soak cycles. Compared with a PC/ABS blend of similar melt flow, P2H-AT has a lower melt density and a lower processing temperature but lower low-temperature multiaxial ductility. Compared with electroplating ABS grades in the same portfolio, P2H-AT is not specifically formulated for etch-surface adhesion. Chrome-line or satin-nickel plating processes require adhesion validation according to ISO 2819 or the relevant OEM plating standard before substitution.
Within the manufacturer’s portfolio, P2H-AT is positioned above the standard P2H flow-impact balance by virtue of the AT stabilization package. The exact thermal-property delta is colour- and lot-dependent; converters should request producer comparative data for the specific colour. Compared with chemically coupled glass-fibre ABS grades, P2H-AT retains easier colourability and lower density but has lower tensile modulus and higher mould shrinkage anisotropy.
Against high-flow ABS grades with MVR above 40 cm³/10 min, P2H-AT has lower flow length but higher Charpy notched impact and higher Vicat B/50. Against high-impact ABS grades with Charpy values above 35 kJ/m², P2H-AT has a slightly lower rubber content and therefore improved thermal stability but reduced low-temperature toughness. These trade-offs follow from the graft rubber content and the molecular weight of the SAN matrix; the exact proportions are proprietary to the manufacturer.
In injection moulding of unpainted interior trims, centre console frames and visible A-surface housings, the material is processed through a three-zone screw with L/D 18:1 to 22:1 and a non-return valve. On a hydraulic injection moulding machine with 1000 kN clamp force and 35 mm screw diameter, typical melt temperatures are set at 235 °C to 245 °C, mould temperatures at 50 °C to 60 °C, and holding pressure at 45 MPa to 65 MPa. Thin-wall sections from 1.2 mm to 2.5 mm require high injection velocity to avoid hesitation marks, but fill rates above 150 mm/s can generate shear-induced splay if the melt is not homogeneously plasticated. This processing conflict is a known field issue in high-gloss parts, where gate blush and weld lines are rating criteria under OEM appearance specifications.
Runner and gate geometry should maintain flow length to wall thickness ratios below 150:1. Pin gates of 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm diameter freeze sufficiently quickly to maintain packing, but gates below 0.6 mm generate excessive shear and visible jetting. Cavity vent depths of 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm prevent gas burn at flow-front meeting lines. Clamping force per projected cavity area is typically 0.35 kN/cm² to 0.50 kN/cm² for this grade at the recommended melt temperature.
Screw recovery should be set so that plastication time remains below cooling time. At a melt temperature of 240 °C, barrel zone settings of 220 °C, 235 °C, 240 °C and nozzle at 245 °C provide a stable energy balance on a general-purpose screw with compression ratio 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. Higher compression ratios above 2.8:1 can increase shear heating and generate resin-yellowing in natural grades.
Weld-line formation in P2H-AT is influenced by melt temperature and packing. Lower melt temperatures below 220 °C reduce interdiffusion of SAN across the flow front and weaken weld-line tensile strength. Raising mould temperature to 70 °C improves weld-line tensile retention by keeping the interface above the glass transition temperature of the SAN matrix longer, but it also extends cycle time and may increase sink marks near ribs.
Spiral flow length at 240 °C and 60 MPa injection pressure is in the range of 35 cm to 45 cm for a 2 mm wall thickness; published data for this specific configuration is limited. Flow simulation should be calibrated with capillary rheometry rather than relying on the MVR alone.
Thermal deformation limits are defined by heat deflection temperature under 1.80 MPa flexural stress. The grade retains a heat deflection temperature of 94 °C when tested to ISO 75-2. For components exposed to short-term heat spikes, this value is more restrictive than Vicat B/50. Designers should not interchange the two values; HDT/A is a stiffness-limited deformation boundary, while Vicat B/50 is a penetration-based softening indicator.
Drying upstream of the hopper is a critical boundary condition because residual surface moisture interacts with the polybutadiene phase during plastication, producing volatile degradation products and splay on visible surfaces. Desiccant dryers with dew point below -30 °C and an inlet air temperature of 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h reduce pellet moisture below 0.02 % by weight. Where ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, opened bulk containers should not remain uncovered, and hopper residence time should be less than 30 min when the ambient dew point exceeds 15 °C.
At the upper end of the melt-temperature window, residence times above 8 min at 250 °C initiate polybutadiene double-bond depletion, shifting notched impact downward and increasing yellowness index. Shot size should therefore be maintained above 30% of maximum machine shot capacity to limit barrel residence. When shot size drops below 25%, a smaller machine or hot-runner valve-gate sequencing should be used to reduce thermal history.
| Processing parameter | Recommended boundary |
|---|---|
| Melt temperature | 220–250 °C |
| Mould temperature | 40–80 °C |
| Drying | Desiccant dryer, 80 °C, 2–4 h |
| Residual moisture | <0.02 % |
| Screw L/D | 18:1–22:1 |
| Back pressure | 0.5–1.5 MPa |
| Injection speed | Medium-high, up to 150 mm/s for thin-wall |
| Holding pressure | 45–65 MPa |
| Regrind fraction | 20–30 wt% pending weld-line validation |
The polybutadiene rubber phase in ABS grades undergoes thermo-oxidative degradation during repeated plastication. Regrind fractions above 30 wt% can reduce weld-line tensile retention because the rubber particle size distribution shifts toward crosslinked agglomerates and the grafted SAN interphase loses adhesion. When regrind is used at 20 wt% to 30 wt%, melt pressure stability generally remains acceptable on a 1300 kN machine, but tensile bars moulded with a weld line should be tested according to ISO 527-2 against virgin-material values. If weld-line strength drops more than 15%, regrind ratio should be reduced or a compatibilizing stream should be introduced only after validation.
Thermal ageing at 90 °C for 500 h in air can reduce notched impact due to rubber-phase oxidation; parts that must retain impact after heat ageing should be validated by ISO 188 or the relevant OEM accelerated ageing protocol.
Compliance under the European Union RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended and REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 is normally declared for this unfilled grade; batch-specific certificates should be requested for SVHC content. Flammability classification is generally UL 94 HB at 1.6 mm nominal thickness, but the current UL Yellow Card should be consulted for specific colour and thickness. For interior automotive applications requiring low volatile organic compound emissions, specimen testing according to VDA 278 is recommended because pellet-derived VOC values do not automatically transfer to moulded parts with different residence times.
