Dynasol Calprene® SBS 419 is a linear styrene-butadiene-styrene thermoplastic elastomer produced by anionic solution polymerization. The grade is supplied as porous pellets with a non-staining stabilizer package and is specified for applications that require reduced melt and solution viscosity without sacrificing thermoplastic processability. Polystyrene terminal blocks form glassy domains that function as physical crosslinks within a continuous polybutadiene matrix. The material therefore exhibits elastomeric recovery at ambient temperature and flow behavior at elevated processing temperatures. Calprene® SBS 419 is differentiated within the Calprene SBS portfolio by a styrene content near 30 wt%, a diblock content of approximately 31 wt%, and a linear architecture. These compositional attributes lower network junction density relative to low-diblock triblock grades and improve compatibility with asphalt maltenes, aliphatic tackifiers, and polyolefin matrix phases. The product is processed on conventional thermoplastic equipment and is used in polymer-modified bitumen, solventborne adhesives, footwear compounding, and impact modification of polyolefins.
Lot-release characterization of Calprene® SBS 419 is performed using standardized methods. Representative commercial values are provided below; certificates of analysis establish lot-specific acceptance limits. The diblock fraction is a deliberate compositional variable rather than an impurity and is reported separately from the triblock content. The high diblock content reduces melt elasticity and solution viscosity, but it also lowers tensile strength and elastic recovery relative to a fully coupled linear triblock of identical styrene content.

The melt flow rate is a low-shear comparison point and does not provide a complete processing specification because the melt is highly shear-thinning. For die design and extrusion scale-up, capillary rheometry at 180 °C to 200 °C is recommended. In solution, Calprene® SBS 419 shows lower viscosity than low-diblock linear SBS of equivalent total styrene content. Formulators should monitor solids content closely; solution viscosity rises sharply above 30 wt% solids in aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, and staged solvent addition is required to prevent localized gel formation.
For melt compounding, Calprene® SBS 419 can be processed in co-rotating twin-screw extruders with L/D 40:1 or higher at barrel set points of 150 °C to 190 °C and a die temperature not exceeding 200 °C. Residence time should be minimized because polybutadiene unsaturation can undergo thermoxidative degradation above 210 °C, producing viscosity loss, gel formation, and discoloration. A nitrogen blanket on feed hoppers and vacuum devolatilization at −0.08 MPa gauge reduce oxidative damage during compounding with polyolefins. Pre-drying at 65 °C for 2 h is adequate when surface moisture is visible or ambient storage relative humidity has exceeded 70% for extended periods; the base polymer has low equilibrium moisture absorption.
For polypropylene impact modification, Calprene® SBS 419 is typically compounded at 10–30 wt% with PP homopolymer in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Side feeding of a portion of the polypropylene after SBS melting improves distributive mixing. The high diblock fraction may plasticize the polypropylene phase slightly, reducing tensile yield strength measured by ASTM D638 more than a low-diblock SBS at the same loading. Notched Izod impact testing under ASTM D256 can demonstrate a ductile-brittle transition shift, but published data for this specific grade in that exact configuration is limited; compound validation is required.
In polymer-modified bitumen for road paving and waterproofing membranes, Calprene® SBS 419 is incorporated at 3–6 wt% into penetration-grade bitumen using a high-shear mixer operated at 170–190 °C. The elevated diblock content improves initial dispersion by lowering viscosity and promoting wetting of the bitumen maltene phase. The same diblock fraction reduces elastic recovery of the finished binder relative to low-diblock or radial SBS grades. Plant-scale dispersion may require a rotor-stator homogenizer with tip speeds of 20–25 m/s at 175 °C for 60–120 min, followed by low-shear agitation to allow phase inversion. Fluorescence microscopy of the aged binder can confirm dispersion quality, but this is not a substitute for specification testing.
Process control follows EN 13398 or ASTM D5976; specification testing is conducted to EN 14023 or national equivalents. Softening point is measured by ASTM D36, penetration by ASTM D5, and storage stability by ASTM D7173 or EN 13399. Calprene® SBS 419 is more appropriate for binders where low processing viscosity and interfacial compatibility carry greater weight than maximum elastic recovery. Published data for field performance at addition levels above 6 wt% in this specific grade is limited; plant-scale validation is required.
In solventborne adhesive production, Calprene® SBS 419 is dissolved in toluene, cyclohexane, or toluene/hexane blends at 20–30 wt% solids. The linear architecture and high diblock content produce a comparatively low solution viscosity, which permits higher solids loading in pressure-sensitive and lamination adhesives without exceeding mixer torque limits. Sigma-blade mixers and high-torque turbine mixers are used, with staged solvent addition to prevent lumping. Calprene® SBS 419 is combined with aliphatic or rosin ester tackifiers, naphthenic or paraffinic oils, and hindered phenol antioxidants. The high diblock fraction contributes tack and substrate wetting but lowers cohesive strength and shear holding power relative to low-diblock triblock grades. Formulation screening should therefore prioritize shear holding power and elevated-temperature performance. Relevant test methods include ASTM D6195 loop tack, ASTM D3654 shear adhesion failure temperature, and ASTM D903 peel adhesion. In footwear compounds, the grade is melt-mixed with polystyrene, EVA, or vinyl acetate copolymers; melt temperatures are maintained below 190 °C, and injection molding hardness is typically below 70 Shore A unless reinforcing resins are added.
Differences between Calprene® SBS 419 and other SBS grades in the Dynasol portfolio are governed by three structural variables: architecture, styrene content, and diblock content. Calprene® SBS 419 is linear and high in diblock. Linear architecture reduces melt elasticity and die swell relative to radial grades such as Calprene® 501. Radial grades generally exhibit higher tensile strength and elastic recovery because star-branching creates a denser physical network, but they also require higher processing temperatures and produce higher melt viscosity.
Compared with high-styrene grades such as Calprene® 540, which are formulated around 40 wt% styrene, Calprene® SBS 419 gives lower Shore A hardness, lower tensile strength, and lower modulus. It retains greater low-temperature flexibility because the continuous polybutadiene phase dominates. The high diblock content of Calprene® SBS 419 further depresses tensile strength and viscosity relative to low-diblock linear grades with equivalent styrene content. This makes the product suitable for compatibilization and tack generation rather than for load-bearing elastic articles. The 10 MPa tensile strength and 1.4 MPa 300% modulus of Calprene® SBS 419 lie below values expected from a low-diblock triblock SBS of the same styrene content, while its melt flow rate and low solution viscosity are higher. Those properties are an intentional trade-off for bitumen and adhesive applications where interfacial activity and processability dominate.
The base polymer is subject to chemical inventory listing requirements. In the European Union, polymers are exempt from registration under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006; the styrene and butadiene monomers are registered by the manufacturer. For food-contact applications, SBS block polymers may be evaluated under 21 CFR 177.1810 for styrene block polymers, subject to end-use testing and any applicable migration limits. Electrical and electronic applications fall outside the scope of RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU unless the final article is otherwise in scope; the grade contains no intentionally added lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, or PBDE. The final compound may contain additives that alter regulatory status. The grade is not intended for medical implantation or long-term blood-contact applications.
Calprene® SBS 419 has operational boundaries. Continuous service above 70 °C under load is not recommended without stabilizer reinforcement because the polystyrene domains soften progressively. The polybutadiene midblock is unsaturated, so prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, ozone, and strong oxidizers leads to chain scission and surface crazing. Outdoor parts require carbon black, ultraviolet stabilizers, or protective coatings. Light-colored formulations should avoid amine-based antioxidant systems because of discoloration risk. The product should be stored in sealed containers away from direct sunlight and high-humidity environments. Opened bags should be used immediately or transferred to sealed containers under dry conditions. Solvent processing requires explosion-proof equipment and appropriate ventilation because the vapor zones can be flammable.
