    More Introduction

Dynasol Calprene® SBS 411 is a linear styrene–butadiene–styrene triblock copolymer produced by anionic solution polymerization and supplied as porous crumb or pellet. The polymer carries CAS registry number 9003-55-8 and is stabilized with a non-staining phenolic/phosphite antioxidant package. Under service temperatures below the polystyrene glass transition, the immiscible polystyrene end-blocks form discrete hard domains that act as physical crosslinks within the continuous polybutadiene matrix; above approximately 100–120 °C, the styrene domains soften sufficiently for compounding and coating. Distributor technical literature lists a representative styrene content of 30 wt%, a melt flow index of 14 g/10 min at 190 °C/5 kg, and a Shore A hardness of 68 points. These values are typical, not batch certificate limits.

Calprene SBS 411 is differentiated from oil-extended SBS grades by the absence of pre-incorporated extender oil. The grade is specified where low melt viscosity and rapid substrate wet-out are required, including hot-melt adhesives, bitumen modification, injection-molded footwear soling, and impact modification of styrenic or polyolefinic compounds. In high-shear mixing operations, the lower apparent viscosity relative to high-molecular-weight SBS grades in the 0.5–1.0 g/10 min melt flow range reduces motor torque and permits higher filler loadings, but the trade-off is lower tensile strength and a comparatively narrow upper service temperature.

Why does melt-flow index function as the primary specification discriminator for Calprene SBS 411?

The melt flow index determined according to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C under a 5 kg load is the most frequently used lot-acceptance parameter for this grade. A representative value of 14 g/10 min reflects a deliberately controlled weight-average molecular weight and a measurable diblock fraction. The value is not a direct capillary viscosity; it is a single-point inverse viscosity indicator that under-represents shear thinning in high-speed coaters. In a 25 mm co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 40:1, the melt is typically maintained between 150 °C and 180 °C. At this temperature range, the polymer exhibits sufficient flow to wet tackifier resins and mineral fillers without excessive pressure drop. Above 200 °C, polybutadiene segments undergo thermo-oxidative chain scission and crosslinking; gel formation can appear as rising filter pressure and melt-fracture surface roughness.

Hot-melt adhesive recipes containing Calprene SBS 411 at 25–35 wt% polymer, tackifier resin at 40–55 wt%, and paraffinic or naphthenic oil at 10–20 wt% are processed in slot-die coaters or roll coaters at 150–170 °C. Coating viscosity under those conditions is commonly measured by ASTM D3236-15 Brookfield viscometry and falls in the 2,000–6,000 mPa·s range, although the exact value depends on resin softening point, oil aromaticity, and polymer concentration. The low melt viscosity allows thinner film deposition, but cohesive strength measured by ASTM D638-14 on cast films is correspondingly lower than that of higher-viscosity SBS grades.

The following representative property profile is drawn from distributor technical summaries and standard test designations. The certificate of analysis for the production lot takes precedence over typical values.

Because lot-to-lot variation in coupling efficiency and diblock content shifts melt flow index and tensile set, adhesive compounders generally require a certificate of analysis showing lot-specific melt flow index and diblock content. The combination of 30 wt% styrene and approximately 17 wt% diblock places this grade in the lower-hardness, lower-tensile segment of the Dynasol SBS portfolio. That balance favors pressure-sensitive tack and low-temperature flexibility, but it limits cohesive strength at elevated service temperatures.

When Calprene SBS 411 is compounded on a 40:1 L/D twin-screw line, narrow thermal boundaries apply

On a production-scale co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D and segmented screws, Calprene SBS 411 is normally fed through a loss-in-weight feeder into a feed zone held at 40–60 °C. Barrel temperatures are increased from 120 °C in the feed zone to 170–180 °C in the mixing zones, then reduced to 150 °C at the strand die to control die swell. Screw speeds of 200–350 min⁻¹ generate sufficient specific energy for dispersion of tackifier resins, silica, and mineral fillers, but excessive shear above approximately 0.5 kWh/kg can raise melt temperature beyond 190 °C and initiate thermo-oxidative chain scission. Vent vacuum of −0.08 MPa is commonly applied to strip residual moisture and low-molecular-weight volatiles.

Pre-drying is recommended when storage relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Drying in a desiccant hopper at 60–70 °C for 2 h reduces surface moisture below 0.1 wt%. Failure to dry produces surface splay and melt viscosity variability. The polymer is incompatible with strong oxidizers, and formulations containing amine-based heat stabilizers should be screened before production because amine degradation products can accelerate gel formation during long residence times at temperature.

In bitumen modification, Calprene SBS 411 is dispersed into penetration-grade bitumen at 180–190 °C using a high-shear rotor-stator mixer or inline colloid mill. Addition levels of 3–6 wt% on bitumen typically raise the softening point measured per ASTM D36 and improve elastic recovery under ASTM D6084-21. The linear architecture produces lower high-temperature storage stability than radial SBS, particularly in low-aromatic bitumen. Phase separation may occur in static storage at 160 °C if the bitumen aromatic/paraffinic balance is unsuitable. For polymer-modified bitumen applications, sulfur crosslinking at 0.1–0.2 wt% or a compatibility agent may be used to stabilize the dispersed polymer phase.

In footwear soling, the grade is compounded with polystyrene, mineral oil, silica, and coupling agents. Injection molding machine clamping force requirements are moderate; a 120 tonne clamp may be sufficient for multi-cavity sole molds depending on runner geometry and melt temperature. Mold temperatures of 20–40 °C improve demolding and reduce shrinkage. The resulting compounds are normally characterized by ISO 868 hardness and ASTM D638-14 tensile testing of die-cut specimens.

Thermo-oxidative stabilization and storage boundary conditions

The supplied antioxidant package is intended for dry, ambient storage in unopened packaging. The grade should be stored below 40 °C and protected from UV light. Under these conditions, distributor technical guidance lists a shelf life of 24 months from production date. Prolonged storage above 40 °C can consume the antioxidant package and produce yellowing; amber or pink discoloration is not necessarily a functional failure but indicates incipient oxidation.

Thermo-oxidative decomposition proceeds by free-radical chain scission in the polybutadiene mid-block. Published activation-energy data for this specific configuration is limited, so melt residence times should be kept below 20 min at 170 °C in batch mixers and below 5 min at 190 °C in injection molding. Nitrogen blanketing of adhesive holding tanks is recommended where melt is held longer than 1 h. Regulatory status should be confirmed against the current safety data sheet and food-contact declarations; styrene block copolymers may be suitable for food-contact applications only when the finished article meets the migration and compositional requirements of FDA 21 CFR 177.1810 and relevant European Union measures.

Calprene SBS 411 differs from other Dynasol SBS grades primarily by linear architecture, lower molecular weight, and higher melt flow index. Radial grades such as Calprene 412 display lower melt flow index and higher melt elasticity, which improves high-temperature bitumen storage stability and tensile strength but increases processing torque. Oil-extended grades contain pre-dispersed paraffinic or naphthenic oil and are intended for high-viscosity compounds; direct substitution of Calprene 411 into an oil-extended compound therefore requires reformulation of the oil/resin balance. Within adhesive and sealant formulations, a shift to a higher-styrene linear grade raises cohesive strength and heat resistance, but lowers tack and increases application viscosity. Conversely, substituting Calprene 411 for a lower-styrene grade reduces melt viscosity and increases low-temperature flexibility at the expense of tensile strength. Selection among these grades must be driven by the viscosity ceiling of the processing line, the substrate heat-sensitivity, and the required end-use tensile and recovery properties.
