Application of Dow MDPE DPDA-3152 NT7

0.935 g/cm³ density and 0.2 g/10 min melt index place Dow MDPE DPDA-3152 NT7 in a processing window suited to thick-section blown-film geomembranes. A 1.5 mm wastewater lagoon liner is run on a 75 mm grooved-feed single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1 and a 300 mm spiral mandrel die. Melt temperature at the die is held between 210 °C and 225 °C. Die gap is set at 1.8–2.2 mm. Blow-up ratio remains at 2.0–2.4:1. Frost line height is controlled to 5–7 die diameters to balance molecular orientation and crystallinity development. The low melt index reduces shear heating but raises extruder backpressure. A barrier screw running at 45–55 rpm with a 20/40/60 mesh screen pack is required to disperse a 40% carbon black masterbatch at 2.5 wt% without gel formation. This loading delivers 1.0 wt% dispersed carbon black in the finished film, sufficient for long-term UV resistance in covered lagoon service. A phenolic/phosphite antioxidant package is added at 1,200 ppm primary and 1,500 ppm secondary to suppress gel accumulation during 72 h continuous runs.

Acceptance testing follows ASTM D6693/D6693M-20 for tensile properties, ASTM D4833/D4833M-20 for puncture resistance, and ASTM D5397-19 for notched constant tensile load stress crack resistance. Potable-water contact requires finished-compound evaluation under NSF/ANSI 61; the base resin alone is not certified. Terminal forms are 0.75 mm, 1.0 mm, and 1.5 mm canal liners, wastewater lagoon liners, and secondary containment liners. Continuous use with hydrocarbon-rich leachate above 60 °C is outside the demonstrated operating envelope; published data for this specific configuration is limited.

What Limits Drawdown Ratio Before Bubble Instability in 180 µm Heavy-Duty Sack Film?

Heavy-duty sack film at 180 µm is compounded without carbon black masterbatch to retain dart impact resistance. Slip additive is limited to 500 ppm erucamide and antiblock to 1,000 ppm synthetic silica because higher loadings produce die lines after 72 h and reduce interlayer bond in gusseted sacks. The resin’s 0.2 g/10 min melt index allows a stable bubble at 2.5:1 to 3.0:1 blow-up ratio with a 1.6 mm die gap. Drawdown ratio below 3.5:1 keeps the bubble stable; thinner gauge below 120 µm at ambient air below 15 °C causes bubble flutter when frost line height exceeds 9 die diameters. Extruder capacity is limited by screw speed at 45–55 rpm on a 65 mm extruder to keep melt pressure below 400 bar.

Tensile strength and elongation at break are tested per ASTM D882-18. Tear resistance is measured per ASTM D1004-13. Dart impact is performed per ASTM D1709-15a. Shipping sack dimensions of 45 × 70 cm with 25 kg fill weight are typical for resin pellets, seed, and mineral additives. Direct fatty food contact is not specified without migration testing under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; the base olefin polymer class is referenced in FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, but compositional compliance requires finished-film testing.

A 150 µm silage bunker cover film based on DPDA-3152 NT7 is compounded with 0.25 wt% HALS masterbatch, 0.10 wt% process stabilizer, and 2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch. The carbon black loading produces an opaque film with light transmission below 1%, suppressing silage surface mold. A screen pack of 20/40/60 mesh is used because carbon black agglomerates above 30 µm create melt fracture at the low melt index of 0.2 g/10 min. Melt temperature is kept at 200–215 °C; HALS thermal degradation becomes measurable above 240 °C. Die gap is 1.8 mm. Blow-up ratio is 2.0–2.6:1. Frost line height is maintained at 6 die diameters and gauge tolerance is held to ±8%.

Film performance is evaluated under EN 13206:2017 for agricultural covering films. Tensile properties are measured per ISO 527-3:2018. UV exposure is assessed by ASTM D4329-13 for 500 h with minimum retained elongation specified by the buyer. Terminal covers are welded into widths up to 12 m and lengths up to 50 m. Silage additive formulations containing more than 15% volatile organic acids are not recommended because the resulting extractive load is outside the published compatibility range.

Extrusion Backpressure and Screen Pack Retention in Fertilizer Bag Inner Liner Production

Fertilizer bag inner liners at 90 µm are produced from DPDA-3152 NT7 as a monolayer blown film with 0.8 wt% oleamide slip masterbatch. The slip loading reduces coefficient of friction to below 0.18 per ASTM D1894-14, necessary for automated bag filling at 25 kg scale. High melt viscosity at 0.2 g/10 min requires a 20/40/80 mesh screen pack and a breaker plate pressure of 320–400 bar. Barrier screw temperature profile is set at 180 °C feed, 200 °C compression, 210 °C metering, and 215 °C die.

Film tensile, elongation, and tear are measured per ASTM D882-18 and ASTM D1004-13. Dart impact is evaluated per ASTM D1709-15a. Terminal form is 1.0–1.5 m wide layflat liner roll for 50 kg urea and diammonium phosphate woven bag insertion. Long-run extrusion beyond 72 h is limited by slip masterbatch plate-out on the air ring lip; air ring lip temperature below 40 °C reduces fouling.

When Temporary Construction Film Must Retain Tear Strength After 24 Months Outdoor Exposure

Temporary construction film at 200 µm is formulated with 1.5 wt% rutile TiO₂ masterbatch and 0.75 wt% HALS/UV stabilizer masterbatch. The white formulation reflects solar radiation and keeps surface temperature below 60 °C on exposed jobsite envelopes. Processing on a 70 mm extruder with L/D 28:1 uses melt temperatures of 205–220 °C, die gap 2.0 mm, and blow-up ratio 2.2–2.8:1. High TiO₂ loading above 4 wt% would cause screw wear; a nitrided barrel and bimetallic screw are required for this compound.

Tear strength is determined by ASTM D1004-13. UV retained tensile is evaluated after 500 h by ASTM D4329-13. Flame spread classification of the finished film is tested per EN 13501-1:2018 where specified for temporary building enclosures. Terminal products include reinforced closures and dust partitions with widths up to 3 m. Film exposed more than 24 months in direct sunlight at elevation above 1,500 m should be inspected for surface chalking; published data for this specific formulation is limited.

Landfill Cap Texturing and Surface Oxidation Effects on Seam Peel Strength

Textured landfill cap sheet at 1.5 mm is produced from DPDA-3152 NT7 by blown-film extrusion with embossing applied after the bubble collapses. One-sided texturing improves soil interface friction angle compared with smooth sheet, depending on texture depth of 0.2–0.4 mm. The textured surface is formed on a heated embossing roll at 60–80 °C; higher embossing temperatures reduce core tensile strength by surface oxidation. Surface oxidation index is monitored by FTIR in accordance with ASTM D5576-21. When oxidation index exceeds 0.2, seam peel strength may drop below acceptance thresholds on production-welded specimens.

Seam peel and shear are tested per ASTM D6392-12. Notched tensile stress crack resistance for cap service is evaluated per ASTM D5397-19. Terminal cap configurations are 1.0–1.5 mm sheets with 7.0 m standard width. Long-term seams on oxidized surfaces require field weld peel testing; laboratory data cannot substitute for production-welded seam verification.
