    Application of Dow HDPE 2344E

In 500 mL injection-moulded dairy tub production, Dow HDPE 2344E is introduced at 100 wt% virgin let-down with a 2.0 wt% titanium dioxide/carrier polyethylene masterbatch. The base resin is specified with a melt mass-flow index of 4.0 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C/2.16 kg and a density of 0.960 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1. These flow properties allow cavity filling of wall sections from 0.55 mm to 0.90 mm at melt temperatures from 210 °C to 235 °C. Mould temperature is held at 10 °C to 25 °C using water-cooled circuits. Injection pressure typically falls between 80 MPa and 110 MPa on hydraulic machines with clamp force from 1,500 kN to 4,000 kN. Holding pressure is set at 60% to 70% of peak injection pressure for 0.8 s to 1.5 s. Cooling time is controlled to 6 s to 12 s depending on wall thickness. Screw L/D ratio is maintained at 20:1 to 24:1 with a compression ratio of 2.5:1 to 3.5:1. Pre-drying is not normally required, but condensation at relative humidity above 60% can be removed by an 80 °C hopper-dryer treatment for 1 h. Food-contact compliance must be verified against EU Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, with overall migration below 10 mg/dm² under final-article test conditions. FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 provides material-level clearance for olefin polymers when the end-use condition of use and the food simulant are specified in the food-contact submission. At melt temperatures above 240 °C, volatile generation and gate-stringing increase. At mould temperatures below 8 °C, surface crystallinity gradients produce uneven gloss. End products include 250 mL and 500 mL round dairy tubs with snap-on lids.

What drop-test requirements apply to 20 L open-head pails moulded from Dow HDPE 2344E?

Open-head pails for liquid chemical packaging require finished-article certification under the UN model regulations; the resin alone does not confer a UN mark. A 20 L pail body is injection-moulded from 100 wt% virgin HDPE 2344E with 2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch for outdoor UV storage. Melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained at 220 °C to 240 °C, mould temperature at 15 °C to 30 °C, and injection speed is profiled from 40 cm³/s at the gate to 80 cm³/s during cavity fill to prevent gate blush. Clamp force on a 500 t single-cavity machine is used. The pail body weight is 650 g to 750 g and the lid weight is 120 g to 160 g. The lid perimeter hinge sections require consistent packing to prevent sink marks. After moulding, pails are conditioned at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50% ± 5% RH for 48 h. Drop testing is performed according to ISO 2248 or ASTM D5276; for dangerous goods of packing group II, a 1.2 m drop at -18 °C onto concrete is typical. Stack load testing follows ISO 2234 with a compressive load of 75% of the rated stack height for 28 days. These requirements are packaging-specific and depend on gasket material, closure torque, and wall thickness. End products are UN 1H2/Y1.5/100 open-head pails used for adhesives, water-based coatings, and drilling fluids.

Tubular closure moulding for non-carbonated beverages and household chemical bottles uses a hot-runner stack mould configuration. The resin is dry-blended with 2.5 wt% masterbatch containing slip and anti-block additives at a let-down ratio of 40:1. Melt temperature from 200 °C to 225 °C is maintained at the hot-runner manifold, and the mould is water-cooled to 10 °C to 25 °C. Cycle times for a 3.0 g closure on a 64-cavity stack mould fall between 7 s and 11 s. The melt mass-flow index of 4.0 g/10 min supports rapid cavity filling, but the grade may shorten gate-seal time in small closures, so holding pressure must be applied early. Hot runner nozzle temperature is set 5 °C to 15 °C above the barrel front zone to avoid premature freeze-off. Food-contact closure applications require compliance with EU No 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520; organoleptic acceptance is agreed between converter and brand owner because no universal resin-level organoleptic threshold exists. Removal torque for non-carbonated beverage closures is influenced by the additive package and neck finish; published data for Dow HDPE 2344E in a specific 30/25 neck finish is limited. End products include 28 mm and 38 mm two-piece beverage closures and single-piece detergent caps.

Stack-load retention in returnable beverage crate moulding

For returnable 12 × 0.33 L bottle crates, the material is processed at 100 wt% virgin HDPE 2344E or as a dry blend of 80 wt% virgin resin and 20 wt% clean post-consumer HDPE regrind of known provenance. The blend is prepared at the press hopper by gravimetric dosing. Melt temperature is set at 215 °C to 235 °C and mould temperature at 10 °C to 25 °C on hydraulic clamp units from 8,000 kN to 16,000 kN. Because the crate has thick side-wall ribs and a grid bottom, cycle times exceed 40 s and the part weight ranges from 1.6 kg to 2.4 kg. Packing pressure is 60 MPa to 75 MPa for 10 s to 18 s to control sink marks. Stack-load testing is conducted under ISO 12048 or ASTM D642, with crates conditioned at 40 °C for 24 h before a 24 h static load representing five-high warehouse stacking. Impact resistance after outdoor storage is assessed by ISO 179-1/1eA at -20 °C using a minimum threshold agreed by the pool operator. UV stabilisation is introduced via 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% carrier masterbatch containing hindered amine light stabilisers. End products are rigid beverage crates and bread trays.

When injection speed exceeds 120 cm³/s in storage bin panel moulding, surface defects appear

Maintaining uniform filling in 0.8 mm side-wall sections of household storage bins imposes a bounded injection-speed window. Dow HDPE 2344E at 100 wt% with 1.0 wt% light-stable colour masterbatch is processed at melt temperatures of 210 °C to 230 °C and mould temperatures of 15 °C to 30 °C. When volumetric injection speed exceeds 120 cm³/s, the melt front loses frontal continuity and produces surface striations; reducing speed to 60 cm³/s to 90 cm³/s restores uniform flow. Vent depth must not exceed 0.02 mm to prevent flash, but below 0.01 mm gas burns occur at end of fill. Screw L/D ratios from 20:1 to 24:1 with reverse-pitch check rings are used. Clamp force is selected at 4 kN to 6 kN per cm² of projected area. Typical mould shrinkage for HDPE injection grades of this density class ranges from 1.5% to 2.5% following ISO 294-4, with transverse shrinkage 0.2 to 0.4 percentage points higher than flow direction; part design must verify actual shrinkage. Compliance is limited to REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII and indoor air emission limits specified by German AgBB or French VOC regulations when bins are used indoors. End products are modular storage bins, stackable crates for household use, and wheeled waste containers.
