On air-cooled blown-film lines producing deep-freeze vegetable packaging and heavy-duty industrial liners, ATTANE 4701 is introduced at 20–40 wt% into a host LLDPE to raise puncture propagation resistance without losing bubble stability. The resin has a nominal density of 0.912 g/cm³ by ASTM D792 and a melt index of 1.0 g/10 min by ASTM D1238 at 190 °C/2.16 kg. Because the lower crystalline fraction of an ethylene-1-octene copolymer delays melt crystallization, the air-cooled line is operated with a die gap of 2.0–2.4 mm and a blow-up ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1. Frost line height on a 24:1 L/D barrier screw is held at 5–7 die diameters to allow stress relaxation before film solidification. Barrel zone settings rise from 170 °C in the feed throat to 210 °C in metering, with adapter and die zones at 215–230 °C. In 50–80 µm film, the octene-rich amorphous phase retains low-temperature impact energy at -30 °C measured by ASTM D1709 Method A and tear resistance by ASTM D1922. The final formats are ice-bag side gussets, IQF vegetable film liners, and frozen seafood lay-flat pouches that require seal integrity after deep-freeze storage. For food-contact structures, the finished multilayer is reviewed under 21 CFR 177.1520(c) in the United States and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 in the European Union, provided overall migration is tested on the finished structure under the intended food simulant. Line operators record edge trim and frost line position every 30 min; shifts in ambient air temperature by 3–5 °C are enough to move the frost line and alter transverse direction elongation, so the process window is narrower than for a 0.918 g/cm³ butene LLDPE.
A cast stretch line running a 0.918–0.920 g/cm³ hexene LLDPE host with 20 wt% ATTANE 4701 in the back layer and 1–3 wt% polyisobutylene or EVA cling masterbatch in the cling layer shows a measurable shift in extensional flow at the chill roll. The die gap is set at 0.45–0.65 mm, die temperature 220–240 °C, chill roll temperature 18–22 °C, and draw ratio 4:1–6:1. The lower density and narrower crystalline melting range of the ethylene-octene fraction reduce transverse direction yield stress, which improves on-machine pre-stretch to 200–250% without film bridge failure. Puncture resistance is tested by ASTM D5748; retained puncture force in 20 µm film is controlled by the ratio of back layer VLDPE to core LLDPE. Machine direction tensile strength is measured by ASTM D882 and elongation by ISO 527-3. Because edge neck-in is a process-critical parameter on 1.0–1.6 m die widths, the air-knife pressure and die-to-chill-roll air gap are set to limit neck-in to 6–10% of total web width. The resulting pre-stretch hand film and silage wrap require a balance of dart impact resistance ASTM D1709, cling retention after 72 h at 40 °C, and low unwind noise. Converters monitor final gauge profile with a non-contacting capacitance gauge; transverse gauge variation above ±3% indicates die-lip temperature imbalance or chill roll condensation. Published data for the specific substitution rate in high-speed cast stretch lines is limited, but line trials commonly show that addition above 30 wt% reduces melt strength and increases edge trim.
Because seal initiation temperature governs form-fill-seal throughput, a coextruded laminate for frozen seafood and dry beverage powders places ATTANE 4701 at 100% or in a blend with LDPE in the sealant skin at 10–18 µm within a total film thickness of 70–90 µm. The ethylene-1-octene structure lowers the seal initiation temperature by 10–15 °C relative to a standard butene LLDPE of similar melt index, based on comparative hot tack measurements under ASTM F1921 and seal strength tests under ASTM F88. In a constant-heat jaw sealer, the controlled parameters are 0.3–0.5 s dwell, 0.4–0.6 MPa jaw pressure, and jaw temperature from 105 °C to 135 °C. Hot tack at a seal temperature of 115 °C is the critical release parameter because the filled pouch remains under weight until the seal cools. Barrier core layers may include EVOH with tie layers; the sealant layer must not contain more than 3 wt% slip additive if the laminate is used for high-speed powder filling, because slip blooms to the seal surface and shifts SIT upward. For direct food contact, the finished structure must comply with 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; overall migration is measured according to EN 1186 and specific migration of octene according to Annex I of the regulation. The end formats include stand-up pouches for frozen seafood, gusseted dry-mix bags, and lamination webs for liquid detergent refill pouches. The sealant skin is corona treated to 38–42 mN/m when it is the outer web in a second lamination step.

A 60 µm coextruded medical pouch film replaces an 80 µm structure only after a sterile barrier validation program is completed under ISO 11607-1:2019. The film uses a core of LLDPE with 20 wt% ATTANE 4701 in the sealant and abuse layers to retain flex-crack resistance and seal tear toughness. Pinhole resistance is measured by Gelbo flex testing under ASTM F392; the down-gauged film is conditioned for 1000 flex cycles and inspected for pinhole formation. Seal strength after EtO, gamma, or electron beam exposure is tested by ASTM F88; if gamma irradiation is used, the dose must be validated because high-dose exposure above 25 kGy can reduce elongation at break and change seal failure mode from delamination to film tear. Cytotoxicity of the finished medical device packaging is assessed under ISO 10993-5; the resin itself is not an implantable grade and is not supplied as a sterilized material. Blown film processing for this gauge uses a die gap of 1.8–2.2 mm, BUR 2.0:1–2.5:1, and melt temperature 200–225 °C. The final formats are header bags, bottom-web formed trays, and vented pouch stock for ethylene oxide sterilization. A decline in seal strength below the device manufacturer’s validated target after 48 h at 50 °C accelerated aging triggers a lamination adjustment, not a resin change.
In extrusion coating and lamination, ATTANE 4701 is not run at 100% because the 0.912 g/cm³ density yields higher neck-in and lower melt strength than LDPE coating grades under high draw distances. A typical modification is 10–20 wt% added to LDPE to improve sealability and hot tack of the coated paperboard or aluminium foil surface. Melt temperature is kept below 260 °C because extended residence time above 280 °C degrades the ethylene-octene segments and produces gel particles. The die gap is set at 0.5–0.6 mm, with die-to-substrate gap 150–200 mm; the line speed is adjusted to maintain coating weight at 12–18 g/m². Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so a pilot trial on the target substrate is required before production. End products are liquid carton inner seal layers, barrier paperboard lids, and aluminium blister lidding where hermetic seal at low temperature is required. The diluted grade must still meet the same food-contact compliance as the LDPE host under 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011.
