Application of Dow ATTANE VLDPE 4606G

Coextruded Food-Packaging Sealant Webs on Five-Layer Blown Film Lines

In flexible food packaging, a sealant layer formed from ATTANE 4606G is processed as a discrete coextruded web on five-layer blown film lines equipped with dies in the 250 mm to 400 mm diameter range and die gaps between 1.2 mm and 2.0 mm. The applicable food-contact compliance falls under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 3.1 and 3.2 for olefin polymers used in films and coatings, and under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I, where the overall migration limit is 10 mg/dm² for single-use food-contact articles; compliance testing is conducted with simulants assigned by the EN 1186 series methods. In formulation practice, the sealant layer is run either at 100 wt% ATTANE 4606G or in a 70–90 wt% blend with a higher-density LLDPE, while the sealant layer accounts for 12–25% of the total film thickness; this ratio controls the balance between seal initiation temperature and the modulus required for web tracking on vertical form-fill-seal filling heads. Production-scale experience on five-layer lines shows that gauge bands appear when the extruder rear zone is kept above 190°C, so the rear zone is normally set from 150–170°C and the front zone from 190–210°C to prevent early melting and non-homogeneous dispersion of the ULDPE phase. Downstream conversion is performed on vertical form-fill-seal and horizontal flow-wrap equipment, where the sealant layer is heat-sealed against oriented printed substrates; hot-tack performance is measured by ASTM F1921-12 and static seal strength by ASTM F88/F88M-21, because static seal data alone does not predict the ability of the seal to survive the filling cycle. Terminal product types include frozen vegetable pillow packs, fresh-cut produce pouches, snack-food flow-wrap films, and lidding webs for thermoformed trays, with finished-film puncture resistance measured according to ASTM D5748-19 and tensile properties according to ASTM D882-18.

On cast film lines running above 900 m/min for pre-stretched pallet wrap, ATTANE 4606G is introduced at 10–30 wt% into a metallocene LLDPE matrix to lower melt viscosity and improve draw-down while retaining puncture resistance and elastic recovery. Compliance for non-food logistics film falls under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and, for goods placed on the European market, Directive 2001/95/EC on general product safety; food-contact certification is not required for palletization film. On a production cast film line with a 30:1 L/D extruder and a melt temperature profile of 200–250°C, the die gap is set at 0.8–1.0 mm to maintain gauge uniformity, and the soft ethylene-octene copolymer lowers extruder torque compared with a straight metallocene LLDPE. If the blend exceeds 30 wt%, production-scale winding problems are observed: cling transfer to the chill roll increases, and the film may block at the rewound roll due to the low crystalline fraction. The cast film is tested for puncture energy according to ASTM D5748-19, Elmendorf tear according to ASTM D1922-15(2020), elongation at break according to ASTM D882-18, and cling force according to ASTM D5458-95. The chill roll is maintained at 18–25°C; below 18°C, condensation can create surface defects, while above 25°C the cooling rate is insufficient to stabilize the required cling force and crystallinity. Terminal products include 12–23 µm machine-grade stretch film, hand stretch rolls below 23 µm, and agricultural silage bale wrap; the silage film is evaluated for puncture propagation by ASTM D5748-19 and for elongation by ASTM D882-18.

Why Do Heavy-Duty Sack Extruders Observe Melt Pressure Drops When ATTANE 4606G Is Blended at 20–30 wt%?

Heavy-duty industrial sacks and FIBC liners produced by monolayer or three-layer blown film extrusion incorporate ATTANE 4606G at 20–30 wt% with LLDPE or high-density polyethylene to increase low-temperature dart impact and tear resistance. The applicable compliance framework for non-food chemical transport liners is REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006; if a liner is sold for food contact, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 3.1 and 3.2 apply, and the converter must verify the finished film against those specifications. On blown film lines with a 2.0 mm die gap and a blow-up ratio held between 1.5 and 2.0, the blend produces a measurable melt pressure drop at constant screw speed because the lower melt viscosity of the ULDPE phase reduces the apparent shear stress in the die land; the magnitude depends on the blend ratio and die design, so processors record the clean-LLDPE baseline and re-tune the automatic gauge control loop to prevent thickness oscillations beyond ±5% of target. Downstream conversion is typically flat-tube or gusseted blown film extrusion followed by corona treatment and flexographic printing, with bag sealing by impulse or hot-air welding on automated sack lines. Terminal product types include FIBC inner liners, chemical bag liners, construction-material sacks, and protective mail-order bags; for FIBC liners, the film is tested for tensile properties by ASTM D882-18 and dart impact by ASTM D1709-16a because the liner must remain intact during discharge and handling. A known operational boundary is that melt temperatures above 240°C produce oxidative degradation in low-density polyethylene phases, so adapter and die temperatures are maintained between 200°C and 230°C to suppress gel formation and reduce cleaning cycles.

For aluminium foil-based laminate structures produced by extrusion coating, ATTANE 4606G is applied as a low-temperature sealing and adhesive layer at coating weights between 15 g/m² and 30 g/m², either neat or blended with LDPE at 15–25 wt% to adjust the sealing window. Food-contact laminates built with this grade require FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 3.1 or 3.2 for the olefin polymer layer and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I for the finished single-use article, with migration testing performed according to EN 1186-1 and the appropriate EN 1186 part selected for the intended food simulant. On an extrusion coating line with a 30:1 L/D extruder and a 120 mm screw diameter, the melt is delivered to a 0.6–0.8 mm flat die and drawn through an air gap of 150–250 mm before contacting the chill roll; adhesion to the aluminium foil is enhanced by inline ozone treatment of the molten web and by cleaning the foil surface to a surface tension of at least 38–42 dyn/cm. Processors reduce the melt temperature to 280–300°C when this grade is run neat because its lower melting point allows adequate flow at lower thermal stress, limiting the generation of low-molecular-weight oxidation species that could migrate to the seal surface. Downstream conversion includes sheet-fed lamination, rotogravure printing, and form-fill-seal pouch production; seal strength is measured according to ASTM F88/F88M-21 on 25 mm strips, and hot-tack is measured according to ASTM F1921-12 for continuous-fill operations. Terminal product types are spice sachets, dry-mix pouches, gable-top carton seal membranes, and pharmaceutical cold-form base webs; however, the service temperature limit of this grade is below that of polypropylene-based sealants, so retort or steam sterilization at 121°C must be excluded unless a higher-melting tie layer is added. Pre-drying is not normally required for polyethylene, but pellets stored in humid open silos should be passed through a hopper dryer at 60°C for 2 h if surface condensation or frost is visible, since surface moisture can produce bubble defects in the coating.

When Tuft-Lock Coating Demands a Low Secant Modulus After Backing Cure

Artificial turf secondary backing compounds use ATTANE 4606G at 10–25 wt% in polyethylene-based extrusion coating formulations to increase tuft-lock strength without raising the secant modulus of the cured backing. Compliance for artificial turf sold into the European market is governed by REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU for restricted substances in the backing polymer, while sports-surface performance is assessed under the FIFA Quality Programme for Football Turf handbook methods for tuft lock, rotational resistance, and shock absorption. The downstream process consists of a single-screw extruder feeding a slot die that applies a molten coating to the primary polypropylene carpet backing at 180–210°C, followed by lamination to a secondary backing and ambient or forced-air cure at 40–60°C. Terminal product types are artificial turf rolls for football fields, multipurpose sports fields, and landscape turf panels; tuft-lock force is determined on the finished composite using ISO 17693, and the coating is tested for tensile properties by ISO 527-3:2018. Published data for this specific grade in tuft-lock coatings is limited, so processor trials are required to correlate the 10–25 wt% addition level with the target tuft-lock retention force specified by the turf manufacturer, rather than using a fixed dosage.

    Melt-Blending a Low-Density Ethylene-Octene Copolymer Into PP Impact Compounds

In polypropylene impact modification, ATTANE 4606G is melt-blended into PP homopolymer at 5–20 wt% on co-rotating twin-screw extruders with 40:1 L/D and screw designs that include distributive mixing elements downstream of the melting zone. The regulatory framework for automotive interior compounds relies on ISO 3795 for horizontal burning rate, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for chemical registration, and VDA 277 for low-emission interior components when specified by German OEMs. The compounding process operates with barrel temperatures from 200°C to 230°C and screw speeds in the range of 400–600 rpm, with the ULDPE added through the main feed hopper as a pellet blend; a dispersed low-crystallinity phase forms during mixing, improving the impact-to-stiffness ratio of the PP matrix when measured by ISO 179-1/1eA notched Charpy impact and ISO 527-2:2012 tensile modulus. Terminal product types are automotive interior trim, appliance housing components, and reusable transport boxes; however, published data for this specific grade in PP impact modification is limited, so compounders must validate the desired impact improvement at the specified addition range rather than relying on a universal dosage. A processing boundary applies at the compound-to-injection-molding interface: thick-section injection-molded parts require a viscosity ratio between the PP melt and the ULDPE melt at 230°C that is sufficient to maintain a dispersed phase, otherwise co-continuous morphology and delamination can occur.
