Application of Dongguan Zhongju Plastic Industry ABS 758-GB

In automotive interior trim, Dongguan Zhongju Plastic Industry ABS 758-GB is compounded as the 100-phr base resin in impact-modified formulations for components that are assembled by ultrasonic welding, hot-plate welding or spring-clip retention and are not exposed to continuous service above 85 °C surface temperature. Type testing is centralised on ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile stress and strain, ISO 179-1:2010 for notched Charpy at 23 °C and −30 °C, ISO 306:2013 for Vicat VST/B50, ISO 75-2:2013 for heat deflection at 0.45 MPa, ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1 for xenon-arc colourfastness, and ISO 3795:1989 or FMVSS 302 for horizontal burn rate not exceeding 100 mm/min for thicknesses above 3 mm. Compounds are released only after lot rheology under ISO 11443:2014 at shear rates 100–10,000 s−1 and moisture by Karl Fischer titration below 0.05 %; the reason is that thin-wall air vent vanes with thickness 1.2 mm are unusually sensitive to melt-flow fluctuation and residual styrenic monomer content.

Production compounding uses a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 40:1, segmented screws, downstream atmospheric vent and a vacuum port near the metering zone at −0.08 MPa. Barrel set temperatures from feed to die are 180 °C, 200 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, 230 °C, die 235 °C; screw speed is 300–500 rpm, melt pressure 8–12 MPa. Injection moulding consumes the pelletised compound on a reciprocating screw press with clamp force selected by projected area, shot capacity at 30–80 % of barrel volume, L/D 20–24, compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1, and a check ring free of wear. Pre-drying of moulding pellets in a dehumidifying hopper dryer is set at 80–85 °C for 2–4 h; residual moisture rising above 0.08 % manifests as splay on textured tool surfaces, gate blush, and unpredictable notch sensitivity at −30 °C. The barrel profile is 200–220 °C feed, 220–240 °C compression, 230–250 °C metering, nozzle 240–250 °C; mould temperature is 40–70 °C. Hold pressure 60–100 MPa, backpressure 0.5–1.5 MPa, cushion 3–6 mm, and profiled injection velocity from 150 mm/s in the sprue to 40–80 mm/s at the gate prevent jetting and free-jetting in multi-cavity tools. Terminal production parts include instrument cluster bezels, centre console side covers, door pull surrounds, air vent vanes, and seat side shields.

When ABS 758-GB Replaces Glass-Filled Polypropylene in Appliance Structural Housings

The substitution is specified where the part must combine low-temperature drop impact without white stress whitening, in-mould labelling adhesion, and dimensional stability at 60 °C under IEC 60335-1:2020 service conditions. ABS 758-GB is used as the base resin at 100 phr; impact modifier is added at 3–8 phr, antistatic masterbatch at 1–2 phr, and colour concentrate at 1–3 phr. The normal release envelope is UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm by IEC 60695-11-10:2013 and glow-wire flammability index 650 °C under IEC 60695-2-12:2010. If the application falls into unattended-appliance glow-wire ignition temperature 750 °C under IEC 60335-1:2020 Clause 30.2.2, the compound must be reformulated with flame-retardant additives; published compound data for ABS 758-GB in such systems is limited and requires tool-specific qualification. The remainder of the compliance envelope is RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Candidate List screening under Article 33.

Injection moulding on hot-runner multi-cavity tools requires pre-drying at 80 °C for 3 h to 0.05 % moisture; screw geometry with L/D 20–24 and compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1 is maintained because lower compression in worn screws increases unmelt fractions and weld-line weakening on air purifier side panels. Melt temperature is held at 230–250 °C and mould temperature at 45–65 °C. Large-area top covers with ribbed structures use gas-counterpressure moulding; gas pressure 10–20 MPa is applied after a short-shot fill of 92–96 % by volume, eliminating sink marks without increasing clamp force. The observed production bottleneck on a 450-t toggle press is screw recovery, not plastication; screw speeds above 80 rpm raise melt-temperature overshoot, causing yellowing of white compounds and higher part weight. Terminal products include vacuum cleaner floor-plate housings, air purifier side panels, washing machine top covers, dryer console bezels, and dishwasher fascia strips.

What Limits Injection Moulding Cycle Time in IT and Peripheral Enclosure Production?

Cycle time in ABS 758-GB IT enclosure moulding is limited primarily by gate freeze and ejection temperature, not by screw plasticating capacity. For wall thickness 2.5 mm, cooling time before ejection is governed by the transient heat equation and industrial practice holds average demoulding temperature below 85 °C; this typically places cooling time in the 10–15 s range depending on tool steel and cooling channel placement. The resin compound uses ABS 758-GB at 100 phr with antistatic masterbatch at 2–5 phr and optional conductive carbon black at 1–3 phr where surface resistivity between 106 and 109 Ω/sq is required by IEC 61340-5-1:2016. For limited-power-source equipment under IEC 62368-1:2018 Clause 5.4.1, an HB material may be accepted; when a fire enclosure is required, UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is the controlling classification and neat ABS 758-GB must be reformulated with a flame-retardant package. In such cases, published process data for ABS 758-GB is limited and should be established with capillary rheometry and UL yellow-card pre-testing before tool building.

Pre-drying at 80–85 °C for 2–4 h is mandatory; moisture above 0.06 % produces silver streaks at the gate and visible surface defects on textured monitor bezels. Injection moulding uses a hydraulic or electric screw with L/D 20–24, melt temperature 230–250 °C, mould temperature 50–70 °C, injection speed 120–200 mm/s in optical surfaces, hold pressure 60–90 MPa, and backpressure 0.5–1.0 MPa to prevent colour streaking. Hot sprue bushes or hot runner valve gates are specified where gate vestige is not permitted on show surface; valve gate opening is sequenced to hold 1.5–2.0 mm of gate freeze to avoid sink around bosses. Typical finished part types are monitor bezels, router bottom trays and covers, speaker baffle frames, docking station shells, projector lamp shrouds, and keyboard top covers.

Batch-to-batch variance in colour concentrate heavy-metal content drives the release protocol for ABS 758-GB toy structural compounds, because the finished moulded article must comply with EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 extraction limits for scraped-off materials and with ASTM F963-23 soluble-element requirements. The base resin is fed at 100 phr; colour masterbatch is added at 2–4 wt%, slip agent at 0.1–0.3 phr, and a batch-specific chelating stabiliser may be introduced at 0.05–0.15 phr only after extractable-element screening. REACH Annex XVII Entry 51 phthalate restrictions and Entry 52 provisions apply to the compounded article where control of non-intentionally added phthalates is verified by GC-MS extraction. Multi-cavity high-speed tools use cold runner tunnel gates to avoid visible hot-runner marks on building-block surfaces; melt temperature is 210–240 °C, mould temperature 35–55 °C, injection speed 80–150 mm/s, hold pressure 40–70 MPa, and cycle time for 10–30 g parts is 30–60 s. Drying at 80 °C for 2 h to moisture below 0.05 % prevents surface splay and maintains weld-line impact in thin-walled toy vehicle bodies. Terminal product types are building-block shells, toy vehicle chassis and body shells, dollhouse structural panels, ride-on wheel hubs, and action-figure hard parts.

ABS 758-GB Becomes the Continuous Phase in Thermoformable PC/ABS Alloys

For twin-sheet thermoformed hard-shell luggage and vacuum-formed protective equipment shells, ABS 758-GB is alloyed with bisphenol-A polycarbonate to move the ductile-to-brittle transition below −20 °C while retaining the melt strength needed for sheet formation. The blend recipe places ABS 758-GB at 55–70 wt%, polycarbonate at 25–40 wt%, MBS or SAN-grafted core-shell compatibiliser at 3–6 wt%, phosphite process stabiliser at 0.1–0.3 wt%, and UV absorber package at 0.3–0.8 wt%. Compounding is performed on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 36–40:1, side-fed polycarbonate downstream after the main ABS feed to limit polycarbonate thermal history, barrel set points 240–270 °C to the die, atmospheric vent at mid-barrel and vacuum at −0.09 MPa before the metering zone. Sheet extrusion uses a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1, barrier screw, coat-hanger die at 260–280 °C, calender rolls at 90–110 °C for polished surfaces and 60–80 °C for embossed surfaces; sheet thickness is 1.5–6.0 mm.

Vacuum forming is conducted at sheet surface temperature 180–220 °C; the processing window is narrower than for neat ABS because polycarbonate raises the thermoforming temperature and reduces sag resistance below 170 °C, so infrared oven zoning must be adjusted to 60 %–70 % top heater and 30 %–40 % bottom heater output to avoid sheet stretch marks. Multi-layer twin-sheet forming for luggage shells uses plug assist and aluminium tooling at 80–100 °C; aluminium tool temperature above 100 °C increases cycle time and part shrinkage. Compliance for the alloy is verified by ISO 527-2:2012 tensile yield, ISO 179-1:2010 notched Charpy at −20 °C, ISO 6603-2:2000 instrumented puncture at 23 °C, ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1 xenon-arc resistance, and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. No single global mandatory standard governs all luggage shell designs; OEM specifications typically reference the above methods. Terminal product types include hardside luggage shells, motorcycle top-case outer shells, protective gear shells, instrument carrying case shells, and vacuum-formed automotive roof box bases.

For Wood-Composite Panel Edge Banding Lines

Extrusion lines converting ABS 758-GB into edge banding roll stock and 3D profile wrapping film operate with the resin dry blend set at 80–90 wt%, fine calcium carbonate filler at 5–12 wt%, acrylic processing aid at 1.0–2.0 phr, and internal/external lubricants at 0.4–1.0 phr to control calender plate-out. Pre-drying is performed at 80 °C for 2–3 h to moisture below 0.05 %; moisture above this threshold produces pin-holing in the thin edge banding and starved feeding in the hopper. Single-screw extrusion uses an L/D 30:1 barrier screw with grooved feed bushing, barrel profile 190–230 °C, die 225–240 °C, and polished three-roll calender at 80–110 °C. Corona treatment is applied inline to reach 38–42 mN/m surface energy for a primer and PUR hot-melt adhesion layer; this is critical for subsequent adhesion to MDF and particleboard edges. Compliance references for the finished furniture component are primarily REACH Annex XVII, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and OEM specifications using ISO 178:2019 flexural, ISO 527-2:2012 tensile, ISO 4892-2:2013 weathering, ISO 2409:2013 cross-cut adhesion, and ISO 1518-1:2019 scratch resistance. Published standards for edge banding as a discrete article are limited; the controlling specification is frequently the panel manufacturer’s adhesion and colorfastness protocol. Terminal product types include 1 mm and 2 mm roll stock for straight-edge banding of particleboard and MDF, 3D foils for kitchen cabinet profiles, corner profile strips, and pre-glued edge banding with a coextruded hot-melt layer.

When 758-GB replaces painted ABS in appliance fascia and electronics bezels

Grade 758-GB is selected for applications requiring glossy black surfaces that must tolerate household cleaners, finger oils, and abrading contact without paint delamination. The molded surface can achieve 90 GU at 60° when measured according to ISO 2813:2014 against a polished tool surface. This gloss level is accompanied by pencil hardness of F to H per ISO 15184:2020, which is lower than painted ABS but eliminates paint-film adhesion failure. In production, gate vestige and flow lines remain the primary surface defects; tooling must maintain uniform cooling and avoid abrupt wall-thickness changes greater than 1.5:1 to prevent sink marks.

Compared with general-purpose ABS grades having melt volume-flow rates below 12 cm³/10 min, 758-GB reduces maximum injection pressure in thin-wall sections of 1.2 mm by approximately 8–12 MPa on 120-ton hydraulic injection machines. Compared with high-impact ABS containing higher butadiene rubber content, the grade sacrifices sub-zero notched Izod impact for a more consistent surface gloss and lower tendency for rubber-rich weld lines. The grade is not an electroplating ABS; the butadiene phase is not optimized for chromic acid etching, and electroplated adhesion after standard ABS etch cycles is not guaranteed.

Thermal and rheological constraints of the injection-molding window

Moisture control is the primary processing boundary. Pellets should be dried at 80 °C for 2–3 h in a desiccant dryer to reach a residual moisture level below 0.05 wt%, measured by ISO 15512:2019. At relative humidity above 60%, open storage should not exceed 4 h; dried pellets left in unheated hoppers can regain surface moisture sufficient to cause splay and silver streaks within 1 h in humid production halls. Over-drying above 90 °C for more than 6 h can induce yellowing of the black concentrate carrier and reduce surface gloss.

Recommended barrel temperatures are 210–215 °C in the feed zone, 230–240 °C in the compression zone, and 240–250 °C at the metering zone and nozzle. Melt temperature measured by infrared pyrometer should remain between 230 °C and 250 °C. Residence time above 240 °C should be limited to 5 min to avoid polybutadiene degradation and generation of free radicals that shift surface color. Purging with general-purpose polystyrene or methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene resin is recommended after operation stops longer than 15 min.

Mold temperature should be controlled at 50–70 °C for gloss development. Below 40 °C, flow fronts can develop visible leading-edge marks; above 80 °C, cycle time increases and part ejection may be compromised due to rubber-phase adhesion. Injection velocity depends on wall thickness: 80–150 mm/s for nominal walls of 1.5–3.0 mm. Hold pressure typically ranges from 50–70 MPa, with V/P switch-over when the cavity is 95–98% filled. Back pressure of 3–7 MPa and screw speed of 40–80 rpm provide sufficient plasticating without excessive shear heating.

Batch-to-batch melt flow variation is approximately ±1.5 cm³/10 min around nominal, which is within the reproducibility range of ISO 1133-1:2022; however, molders running thin-wall parts with wall sections below 0.8 mm should request lot-specific melt viscosity curves because this variation can alter fill pressure by 5–7 MPa. Regrind of sprues and runners can be incorporated at levels up to 20 wt% without significant loss of notched Izod impact, provided the regrind is dried to the same moisture specification and is free from mineral oil contamination. Higher regrind fractions increase injection pressure variation and can darken surface gloss due to multiple heat histories. For components requiring UL 94 HB classification at 1.5 mm, regrind use should be validated because colorant and mold-release additive concentration may drift with repeated recycling.

What happens to impact retention at sub-zero service temperatures?

At 23 °C, the reported notched Izod impact of 22 kJ/m² per ISO 180:2023 is sufficient for appliance housings and monitor frames. At -30 °C, the value declines to 9 kJ/m², indicating that the polybutadiene phase has passed through its glass transition and no longer acts as an efficient craze terminator under the high strain rate of the Izod test. This transition bracket is narrower than high-impact ABS grades that can retain 15–18 kJ/m² at -30 °C due to larger rubber particle size or bimodal distribution. Therefore, 758-GB should not be specified for load-bearing outdoor enclosures in climates with service temperatures below -20 °C unless parts are redesigned with higher wall thickness or rib reinforcement.

Puncture impact behavior follows the same trend. In instrumented falling dart tests according to ISO 6603-2:2023, the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature for 2 mm plaques is typically between 0 °C and -10 °C. Field failures on production parts have been traced to sharp internal corners below 0.4 mm radius; designing with minimum internal radii of 0.8 mm and avoiding metal inserts with differential thermal contraction reduces notch sensitivity. Continuous service temperature under load should not exceed 80 °C per ISO 75-2:2020 method A.

Chemical resistance, paint adhesion, and regulatory documentation

Grade 758-GB resists dilute aqueous acids, alkalis, and most detergent solutions. It is not resistant to ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents; exposure to methyl ethyl ketone or toluene causes stress cracking within minutes under molded-in stress. Environmental stress-cracking resistance can be screened using ISO 22088-2:2006. For external painted applications, adhesion of acrylic or polyurethane topcoats requires surface pre-treatment by plasma or chemical adhesion promoter because the low surface energy of molded ABS reduces direct paint wetting. The supplier should be consulted for lot-specific paint adhesion compatibility when colorant packages affect surface energy.

Mold filling simulations for 758-GB in thin-wall electronic enclosures should use a viscosity model fitted from capillary rheometry at 240 °C. The grade exhibits shear-thinning behavior consistent with ABS; apparent viscosity at 1000 s⁻¹ is approximately 120–150 Pa·s. Gate positioning should account for weld lines that form behind holes and bosses. In trials on a 160-ton injection machine with valve-gated hot runner, part weight variation was held to ±0.15% when holding time was adjusted for gate freeze. One recurring manufacturing issue is black speck contamination when the screw and barrel are not purged after processing flame-retardant or glass-filled material; a dedicated screw with chromium-alloy surfacing and a reverse-cut check ring is recommended for color-critical production. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; users should confirm cumulative heat history and lot-specific rheology with Dongguan Zhongju Plastic Industry before transferring tools from natural ABS grades. The grade is not recommended for laser welding to dark parts because black pigment content can absorb the laser beam before reaching the weld interface; ultrasonic welding is preferred for joining.
