Application of Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS T45

In automotive interior programmes, polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloys are specified where low-temperature ductility, grain reproduction in grained mould surfaces, and dimensional stability must be achieved without a secondary painting step. Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS T45 is introduced at 100 phr as the base polymer; colour and functional masterbatches are added at 0.5–3.0 wt% depending on pigment let-down ratio, and unpainted grained parts commonly contain 15–30 wt% in-plant regrind provided residual moisture remains below 0.02 wt%. End-use compliance for interior trim includes FMVSS 302 / ISO 3795 burn-rate testing, DIN 75201-B fogging, VDA 270 odour, and REACH Annex XVII restrictions. Injection moulding on production-scale machines with clamp force above 3500 kN and screw diameters of 45–60 mm requires pre-drying at 80–100°C for 3–4 h; melt temperature is maintained between 250°C and 270°C, mould temperature between 60°C and 80°C, and packing pressure between 60 MPa and 80 MPa. Failure modes recorded in production include splay marks from moisture, delamination at weld lines when mould temperature falls below 50°C, and sink marks over bosses where rib-to-wall thickness exceeds 0.7:1. Terminal product types include instrument panel retainers, glove box frames, centre console substrates, and unpainted door panel inserts. Published data for this specific T45 configuration under long-term UV exposure is limited, so an external UV-stabilised capstock or coating is recommended for upper interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight.

Why Do Indoor Electrical Enclosures Fail Warpage Acceptance Above 0.3 mm?

Indoor electrical distribution enclosures moulded from general-purpose PC/ABS are assessed for dimensional tolerance because modular DIN-rail covers demand flatness after thermal cycling and mechanical assembly under IEC 62368-1:2024 and IEC 60947-1:2020 end-product requirements. Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS T45 is processed at 100 phr as the neat base resin; when non-black colours are required, 0.5–2.0 wt% colour masterbatch is added, and a phosphite antioxidant masterbatch at 0.1–0.3 wt% is used where regrind content exceeds 20 wt%. The injection moulding process uses mould temperatures of 70–90°C, melt temperatures of 255–275°C, and multi-stage injection speeds below 120 mm/s to avoid jetting and gas entrapment around snap-fit features. Wall thickness is held between 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm, and gate locations are positioned away from thin ribs to reduce differential shrinkage; on 2500–4000 kN machines, screw recovery time is monitored because batch-to-batch viscosity variation above 5% relative to the supplier certificate shifts packing behaviour and flatness. General-purpose PC/ABS T45 is typically expected to meet UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm; UL 94 V-0 at the same thickness requires a verified flame-retardant variant or additional flame-retardant masterbatch, and this must be confirmed before series release because published data for this specific configuration is limited. Terminal product types include indoor distribution box covers, DIN-rail enclosures, terminal housings, and control cabinet door inserts. The grade should not be exposed to continuous outdoor UV unless an external UV-stabilised coating or film is specified, because unpigmented PC/ABS surfaces undergo yellowing and micro-cracking under prolonged sunlight.

Across high-volume thin-wall injection moulding of network equipment housings, the gate freeze time and weld-line strength determine whether PC/ABS T45 can be substituted for unfilled polycarbonate in router upper shells and set-top box covers. The formulation uses 100 phr T45 as the base polymer with 0.5–1.5 wt% colour masterbatch and 10–20 wt% in-plant regrind; melt volume rate should be checked under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260°C/5 kg and must fall within the range declared on the batch certificate to maintain consistent filling of 1.2–1.8 mm nominal walls. Processing on hot-runner injection machines with clamp force 2000–3500 kN requires pre-drying at 80°C for 4 h to below 0.02 wt% moisture; melt temperature is held at 245–265°C, mould temperature at 60–80°C, and injection pressure at 90–130 MPa. The processing window is tight: melt temperature above 280°C initiates thermal degradation of the ABS phase, producing silver streaks and a measurable loss of notched impact strength, while melt temperature below 235°C causes short shots at the end of fill. End-part compliance is verified under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, IEC 62368-1:2024, and ISO 11469:2016 for polymer marking. Terminal product types include router upper and lower shells, set-top box covers, smart speaker enclosures, and small network switch housings.

Rib-to-Wall Thickness Ratios and Dimensional Tolerance in Printer Chassis Components

Printer chassis components demand long-term dimensional stability under intermittent heat from fuser modules and mechanical loads from paper transport mechanisms. Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS T45 is used at 100 phr as the neat base resin; where flexural modulus above 3500 MPa is specified, a short-glass-fibre masterbatch is compounded at 10–20 wt%, but this substitution moves the material away from the unreinforced PC/ABS property envelope and requires revalidation of impact and mould shrinkage. Injection moulding on 2500–4500 kN machines with sequential valve gating uses melt temperatures of 250–270°C, mould temperatures of 70–90°C, and packing pressure of 65–85 MPa. Rib-to-wall thickness is maintained between 0.5:1 and 0.7:1 to avoid sink marks and warpage; when ribs exceed this ratio, gas counterpressure or foam-assisted moulding is used to compensate for shrinkage. Compliance is evaluated under UL 746A:2013 for polymeric materials used in electrical equipment, ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus, and ISO 180:2019 for notched Izod impact strength. Terminal product types include printer chassis, scanner bases, copier internal frames, and document handler supports. Batch-to-batch mould shrinkage variation above 0.2% absolute is a known process risk on large flat frames, so cavity pressure sensors are recommended for process monitoring.

In portable power tool housing production, impact strength after solvent exposure is a primary acceptance criterion because assembly lines use lithium grease, cutting oil, and mild solvents that can attack polycarbonate-based materials. Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS T45 is processed at 100 phr as the hard substrate; 10–25 wt% regrind is commonly incorporated, and where coloured outer shells are exposed to workshop lighting and outdoor storage, a UV stabiliser masterbatch at 0.2–0.4 wt% is added. Two-shot injection moulding is used to overmould thermoplastic elastomer grips onto the T45 substrate, with substrate melt temperature at 260–270°C, mould temperature at 70–90°C, and TPE overmoulding temperature below 220°C to avoid re-melting the substrate surface. Wall thickness in the main housing is typically 2.5–3.5 mm, and packing pressure is held at 70–90 MPa to reduce voids and sink marks around screw bosses. Compliance is verified under IEC 62841-1:2014 for motor-operated hand-held tools and UL 746A:2013 for polymeric material safety; notched Izod impact strength is tested under ISO 180:2019 before and after immersion in common service fluids. Terminal product types include drill housings, angle grinder bodies, impact driver shells, and battery tool clamshells. The material should avoid prolonged contact with ketones, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons, which can induce environmental stress cracking in unstressed and stressed areas alike.

When Household Appliance Control Panels Must Resist Cleaning Agents and Repeated Thermal Cycling

Control panel housings in washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and air conditioners must retain surface gloss and mechanical strength after exposure to alkaline cleaners, detergent residues, and repeated heating and cooling cycles. Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS T45 is formulated at 100 phr as the base polymer; high-gloss white panels are produced with a titanium dioxide and optical brightener masterbatch at 2–5 wt%, and where static dust build-up is a concern, a migratory antistatic masterbatch is used at 0.5–1.5 wt%. Production uses rapid heat-and-cool injection moulding with mould surface temperatures cycled between 90°C and 120°C, melt temperature of 250–270°C, and injection speed of 60–100 mm/s to eliminate flow marks and weld-line visibility on textured surfaces. After moulding, parts are annealed for 1–2 h at 80–90°C to relieve residual stress; unannealed panels show stress cracking around screw bosses after 50 thermal cycles from −10°C to 60°C. Compliance is assessed under IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30 for resistance to heat and fire, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, and ISO 2818:2018 for sampling and testing of plastics from finished articles. Terminal product types include washing machine control panel housings, vacuum cleaner bodies, air conditioner front panels, and control knob surrounds. Published data for T45-specific chemical resistance under repeated contact with quaternary ammonium disinfectants is limited, so coupon testing according to ISO 2818:2018 is required before series release.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS T45 is an injection-molding alloy of bisphenol-A polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer. The grade is assigned to the manufacturer’s T-series for medium-flow PC/ABS compounds, and it is specified for thin-wall electronic enclosures, automotive interior trims, and appliance control panels. Published lot-specific property data for the exact Dongguan Zhongen T45 configuration is limited; the numerical ranges that follow are class-typical values for unfilled medium-flow PC/ABS alloys tested under the cited ISO methods, not a substitute for the supplier’s batch certificate. The material is supplied as cylindrical granules, typically 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm in diameter, packed in 25 kg moisture-barrier bags. Unopened lots should retain a moisture content below 0.02 wt%; exposure to ambient relative humidity above 60% increases the drying load before injection molding.

The ranges in Table 1 establish class boundaries rather than lot-specific certification values.

How Does the Melt-Temperature Window Compare with Unmodified Polycarbonate?

The addition of the ABS terpolymer lowers the melt viscosity relative to polycarbonate homopolymer. Under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C/5.0 kg, unfilled medium-flow PC/ABS of this class typically exhibits 12 cm³/10 min to 22 cm³/10 min, whereas a high-viscosity polycarbonate homopolymer may remain below 8 cm³/10 min under the same condition. This flow difference permits filling of thin-wall sections at lower cavity pressure, but it is accompanied by a reduction in dry-heat continuous-use temperature and a narrower resistance to some hydrocarbon species.

The melt-temperature window for PC/ABS T45 is narrower than for polycarbonate alone. At barrel set points below 230 °C, the melt may not generate sufficient homogeneous morphology, and filling pressure in a 120 mm flow-length, 0.8 mm wall-thickness housing can exceed 90 MPa. At melt temperatures above 280 °C, the butadiene rubber phase oxidizes and the polycarbonate phase undergoes chain scission; visible yellowing can occur after 5 min residence in a conventional hot-runner manifold. For production on a reciprocating-screw machine with 50 mm screw diameter and 20:1 L/D, barrel profile set points from feed to nozzle of 230 °C, 240 °C, 250 °C, and 255 °C are used to maintain measured melt temperature between 250 °C and 265 °C.

Drying is the dominant variable for lot-to-lot mechanical stability. A desiccant dryer with dew point -40 °C to -30 °C and air temperature 80 °C to 90 °C for 3 h to 4 h is specified to achieve residual moisture below 0.02 wt%. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying time is extended to 6 h and the hopper contents should not exceed 1 h of material consumption. Hydrolysis of the carbonate linkage begins when residual moisture exceeds 0.05 wt%; the resulting molecular-weight loss appears as silver streaks, splay, and reduced weld-line strength.

Screw recovery and cushion control influence part consistency. On machines with screw diameters 60 mm to 100 mm, screw speed between 60 rpm and 120 rpm and back pressure of 0.3 MPa to 0.7 MPa provide sufficient homogenization without excessive shear heating of the butadiene rubber phase. A metered cushion of 3 mm to 6 mm is maintained; smaller cushions produce shot-to-shot viscosity variation, while larger cushions increase residence time at melt temperature. Mold temperature is held at 60 °C to 80 °C using turbulent water channels. The higher half of this range improves knit-line strength and grain replication but increases cycle time by 5 s to 15 s depending on wall thickness.

Production of the compound uses twin-screw extrusion with a 40:1 L/D ratio and vacuum venting at -0.08 MPa to -0.09 MPa. The ABS terpolymer is present as grafted polybutadiene particles, and the final morphology depends on the viscosity ratio between the PC melt and the ABS styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer. If the ABS phase is over-dispersed by high-shear screw elements at peripheral speeds above 0.5 m/s, the elastomer particles become too small to arrest crack propagation, and notched impact under ISO 179-1/1eA may fall below 15 kJ/m². This is a compounding-line failure mode observed when screw temperature is not controlled independently from the melt pump and the vent port is overloaded.

Batch-to-batch MVR variation in injection-molding shops is typically controlled below ±2 cm³/10 min. Larger deviations alter fill time and require changes to holding pressure. A lot with MVR at the low boundary of 12 cm³/10 min can increase peak injection pressure by 10 MPa to 20 MPa in a 1.2 mm wall enclosure compared with a lot at 22 cm³/10 min. Processing technicians commonly adjust melt temperature by 5 °C to 10 °C or reduce cushion to compensate, not by altering screw geometry.

If a Flame-Retardant Grade Is Substituted, the Mechanical Profile Changes

Substitution of a flame-retardant PC/ABS can shift the heat and flow balance. Phosphate-ester flame retardants often lower the Vicat softening temperature by 8 °C to 15 °C and reduce flexural modulus under ISO 178:2019 by 5% to 15% relative to non-flame-retardant PC/ABS at the same PC/ABS ratio. Brominated formulations may maintain higher heat deflection temperature but create plate-out on mold surfaces and higher specific gravity. T45 is not a flame-retardant compound unless a supplier’s UL Yellow Card states a specific rating; otherwise only UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm is expected for unfilled PC/ABS of this class.

Compared with a 20% glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS, unfilled T45 has lower flexural modulus—typically 2200 MPa to 2500 MPa versus 5000 MPa to 7000 MPa under ISO 178:2019—and lower density, 1.13 g/cm³ to 1.15 g/cm³ versus 1.25 g/cm³ to 1.35 g/cm³. The unfilled grade produces less anisotropic shrinkage and no fiber read-through on grained surfaces, but it is less suitable for structural brackets requiring creep resistance above 90 °C. For such applications, glass-filled PC/ABS or polycarbonate blends are selected because heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa may be higher by 10 °C to 30 °C.

Within the manufacturer’s PC/ABS series, a higher PC content usually raises heat deflection temperature and notched impact but raises melt viscosity and demands melt temperatures closer to 270 °C. T45 is positioned for balanced flow and impact; higher-flow grades in the same family typically trade impact for lower cavity pressure. Under ISO 1133-1:2022, a high-flow variant may reach 30 cm³/10 min or more but exhibit 10% to 20% lower notched impact at -20 °C.

For direct-gated, cold-runner tools, injection velocity is set to obtain a fill time of 0.5 s to 1.5 s. It is not the total fill time but the flow-front velocity that determines surface defects. At wall thicknesses below 1.0 mm, flow-front velocities above 300 mm/s can generate jetting and gloss variation in unfilled PC/ABS. Gate size should provide a shear rate below 100,000 s⁻¹; above this value, local shear heating can exceed 5 °C and produce gate blush or molecular degradation.

External mold releases containing silicone should be avoided for T45 parts that will be painted or metallized. Surface contamination migrates to the part surface and reduces paint adhesion measured by cross-cut tape pull under ISO 2409:2020 below the required classification of 0 or 1. If an external release is unavoidable, a non-silicone ester-based release is used at the lowest dosage that permits ejection.

Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS T45 is applied to electronic housings, automotive interior trim, and appliance control panels. In electronic housings, the material is processed into enclosures with wall sections from 0.8 mm to 2.5 mm; the notched impact requirement is commonly 30 kJ/m² or higher under ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C. In automotive interior trim, lot acceptance includes appearance after heat aging at 85 °C for 500 h and low-gloss surfaces prepared with grained tools. In appliance panels, resistance to household cleaners is confirmed by immersion or wipe testing under ISO 175:2010; however, strong acids, esters, and some aromatic hydrocarbons attack the polycarbonate phase. The material should not be used in continuous service above 95 °C without creep-rupture validation, and parts exposed to hot cooking oil should be evaluated under the intended load and time because oil-induced stress cracking is a known failure mode in PC/ABS.
