For instrument panel carrier modules and glove box assemblies, Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100 is processed as a neat pelletized alloy rather than a downstream compounded material. The pellet stream is dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30 °C to −40 °C at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h, targeting residual moisture below 0.02 wt% by ISO 15512:2019. Barrel temperatures are profiled from 230 °C in the feed zone to 250 °C in the metering zone with a nozzle setting of 260 °C; the melt temperature measured by air-shot pyrometer is held at 240–270 °C. A general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is used. Hold pressure is set at 40–60% of injection pressure to avoid sink marks over ribs, and total residence time is limited to 8 min to prevent polycarbonate chain scission and butadiene phase degradation.
Blend ratio for first-run automotive interior parts is 100 wt% Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100. Sprues and runners are reintroduced at no more than 15 wt% of total shot weight; regrind from painted or grained surfaces is excluded. Where black pigmentation is required, a carbon black masterbatch at 2 wt% is metered at the throat. If published data for this specific configuration is limited, the lot certificate from Dongguan Zhongen should govern the exact MFR and impact retention limits. Compliance anchoring uses ISO 3795:2020 and FMVSS 302 for horizontal burn rate of interior materials; the EU end-of-life vehicle directive 2000/53/EC and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 apply to restricted substances. Finished parts include lower glove box shells, knee bolster close-out panels, and dashboard trim substrates. Dimensional stability is verified after 24 h conditioning at 23±2 °C and 50±5% RH.
Indoor low-voltage apparatus covers, such as router lower enclosures, smart meter barriers, and industrial control panel shields, are injection molded from Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100 where the mechanical design relies on impact strength and dimensional stability rather than an inherent UL 94 V-0 listing. The alloy is generally not specified for unattended appliance enclosures requiring UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm; a halogenated flame-retardant variant or a separate flame-retardant blend is required in those circumstances. Suitable wall sections are 2.0–2.5 mm with rib-to-wall ratio kept below 0.6:1. For indoor electrical enclosures, virgin PC/ABS 3100 is used at 80 wt%, with 20 wt% of internally generated regrind from sprues and short shots. If the enclosure is overmolded with a TPE seal for ingress protection, the soft-touch layer is co-molded at a thickness of 0.5–1.0 mm; this does not replace the PC/ABS 3100 structural wall. Color masterbatch is limited to 1–2 wt% to avoid shifts in melt flow.
| Compliance parameter | Applicable standard and clause | Test condition |

| Fire hazard for unattended equipment | IEC 62368-1:2018 Clause 6.4.8 | Glow-wire at 650 °C |
| Tracking index | IEC 60112:2020 | CTI test on 3 mm plaque |
| Restricted substances | RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II | Pb 1000 mg/kg, Cd 100 mg/kg |
| Melt mass-flow rate | ISO 1133-1:2022 | 260 °C, 2.16 kg |
Tooling uses valve-gated hot runners with sequential opening to position weld lines away from live parts. Melt temperature is 250 °C, mold temperature 80 °C, and packing pressure is 50–70 MPa hydraulic. Vent depth at the parting line is 0.02–0.03 mm to prevent burn marks at the end of fill. Finished parts include router lower housings, smart meter front covers, and industrial control panel terminal shields.
For diagnostic analyzer housings and ultrasound cart bezels, repeated wipedown with 70% isopropanol and quaternary ammonium disinfectants is a direct operational condition. The application of Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100 in this segment is restricted to non-patient-contact enclosures and structural frames; no statement of biocompatibility is transferred by the raw material itself. Environmental stress cracking is the primary failure mode: alcohol absorption into the ABS phase lowers local yield stress, and residual molding stress near bosses or snap fits initiates craze propagation. For this reason, medical housings are annealed at 80–100 °C for 1 h per 2 mm of nominal wall before assembly, and sharp internal corners are radiused to at least 0.5 mm.
Blend ratio for cleanroom molding is 100 wt% PC/ABS 3100; the addition of regrind is not accepted unless the holder of the medical device technical file has validated a specific closed-loop ratio, typically not exceeding 10 wt%. Blue tinted masterbatch dosage is 1 wt%, and the carrier must be PC/ABS-compatible to avoid delamination. Compliance verification is tied to IEC 60601-1:2005+A1:2012 for mechanical enclosures, ISO 10993-1:2018 only if the housing is a body-contact surface, and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. Processing uses a low-compression screw, L/D 22:1, melt temperature 240–260 °C, mold temperature 70–90 °C, and positive pressure cleanroom air quality ISO Class 8 minimum. End products include diagnostic analyzer front frames, ultrasound cart side panels, and ventilator housing shells.
Angle grinder housings, drill shells and battery pack enclosures are injection molded from Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100 where repeated drop impact and oil exposure are more severe than in consumer electronics. The load path around the motor bearing seat and gearbox interface is designed with rib spacing above 2.0 mm and nominal wall of 2.5–3.0 mm. Torsional rigidity is verified by static load tests based on IEC 62841-1:2014+AMD1:2021 clause 16; enclosures must not expose live parts after a 1.0 m drop onto concrete per IEC 60068-2-31.
Material ratio is 100 wt% PC/ABS 3100 for first-shot structural components. No flexibilizer or external impact modifier is added because dilution of the PC phase would reduce heat distortion. If color masterbatch is used, it is limited to 1 wt% to preserve Charpy notched impact; the lot-specific impact value is checked against ISO 179-1:2010 at 23 °C and −30 °C. For thick bosses and screw posts, gas-assisted injection molding or microcellular foaming with nitrogen at 0.2–0.4 wt% is employed. The process window is 250–270 °C melt temperature and 60–80 °C mold temperature; mold vent depth is 0.02–0.03 mm and clamp force ranges from 1500 kN to 3000 kN depending on tool size. Splay, silver streaking, or brown streaks near the hot runner indicate moisture above 0.03 wt% or residence time beyond 6 min. Finished parts are subjected to thermal cycling from −40 °C to 85 °C for 50 cycles before torque retention testing.
When USB-C charger housings and power bank enclosures are molded from Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100, the product is designed for EU and North American sale under IEC 62368-1:2018 and the AC mains enclosure does not require UL 94 V-0 at 0.75 mm. The engagement hooks and snap arms are molded at 1.2–1.5 mm wall; thinner sections reduce cycle time but increase the risk of jetting at the gate. A nut-in or post-mold threaded insert is not used in thin sections; instead, self-tapping screws are driven into PC/ABS 3100 bosses with pilot hole diameter 60–70% of screw outer diameter.
The blend ratio is 100 wt% PC/ABS 3100; recycled material from cold runners is limited to 10 wt% because the drop test requires consistent notched impact. Black masterbatch at 1 wt% is typical; carbon black increases UV opacity but does not provide outdoor weatherability. Tooling uses sequential valve-gated hot runners to avoid visible weld lines on the shell flat surfaces. Melt temperature is 240–260 °C, mold temperature 75–85 °C, and injection velocity is set to fill the cavity in 0.8–1.2 s. After molding, parts are conditioned for 24 h at 23±2 °C before snap-arm insertion force tests. Finished parts include slide-in charger shells, power bank front covers, and docking station bottom housings.
Roof antenna covers, painted mirror scalps and exterior door trim substrates made from Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100 are specified where the part must retain Class A paint adhesion after thermal shock. The substrate is injection molded at 250 °C melt and 80–90 °C mold temperature to reduce frozen-in stress. Because PC/ABS absorbs solvents in the ABS phase, solventborne adhesion promoters must be applied at 2–4 g/m² dry film thickness and flash-dried for 10 min at 25 °C before basecoat; direct application of aggressive topcoat solvents without promoter causes microcracking around the gate. Unpainted PC/ABS 3100 is not specified for long-term outdoor UV exposure; the coating system must contain UV absorbers and hindered amine light stabilizers.
Material ratio is 100 parts by weight PC/ABS 3100. No regrind is allowed in Class A visible surfaces due to orange peel and contamination. A primerless flame treatment may be used at 200–300 m/min surface exposure velocity, followed by a two-component polyurethane topcoat at 20–25 μm dry film thickness. Adhesion is tested by cross-cut per ISO 2409:2020, requiring classification 0–1; thermal shock is performed per ISO 16750-4:2023 from −40 °C to 85 °C for 30 cycles with no cracking or delamination. REACH and RoHS restrictions apply to pigments and surface treatment residues. End products include painted side mirror shells, roof antenna radome covers, and pillar appliqués.

Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100 is a polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied as cylindrical pellets for injection moulding and extrusion. The numeric designation 3100 is a manufacturer-specific grade identifier and does not by itself communicate filler type, flame-retardant package, or melt-flow classification. Because the supplier has not placed a full multi-point datasheet in an open standards catalogue, any numerical specification assigned to a given lot must be taken from the production certificate of analysis. In the absence of a public lot report, the product is best evaluated through the general property band of medium-flow PC/ABS compounds formulated for dimensionally stable, thin-wall structural parts. Typical commercial compounds in this category show density values of 1.10 g/cm³ to 1.15 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019, Vicat softening temperatures from 110 °C to 135 °C under ISO 306:2022 Method B50, and tensile yield stresses of 45 MPa to 60 MPa under ISO 527-2:2012. The 3100 grade should not be assumed to carry a UL 94 V-0 listing unless the yellow-card document specifies a grade-level thickness and additive package.
Unmodified polycarbonate has a density of 1.19 g/cm³ to 1.20 g/cm³, a high glass transition temperature near 145 °C, and high melt viscosity that increases injection pressure and imposes elevated mould-temperature requirements. General-purpose ABS processes at lower temperatures but exhibits heat-deflection temperatures commonly below 105 °C and lower tensile yield. A PC/ABS alloy such as the 3100 class positions itself between the two materials by reducing melt viscosity compared with neat PC while retaining a portion of the thermal and mechanical performance of the PC phase. Differential scanning calorimetry of comparable blends often resolves a PC phase transition near 145 °C to 150 °C and a SAN-rich phase transition near 105 °C to 115 °C; the observed values shift with PC molecular weight, SAN acrylonitrile content, and rubber particle size distribution.
Melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C and 5 kg is generally 10 cm³/10 min to 30 cm³/10 min for medium-flow PC/ABS compounds, whereas neat PC grades may fall below 10 cm³/10 min under the same conditions. This difference reduces melt pressure in multi-cavity moulds and permits longer flow lengths at a given wall thickness. The tradeoff is that the continuous-use temperature rating and tensile modulus of the alloy are typically below those of neat polycarbonate.

The comparative distinction is not limited to single-point mechanical values. Notched impact retention at -30 °C is controlled by the rubber particle size distribution and the grafting efficiency of the SAN phase. A PC/ABS grade with a bimodal rubber particle distribution can retain 300 J/m to 500 J/m under ASTM D256-10e1 at low temperature, whereas an unfilled ABS grade may fall below 100 J/m under the same test. Neat PC can retain low-temperature impact but usually requires mould temperatures above 90 °C and higher injection pressure to avoid moulded-in stress.
Specification for the 3100 series begins with drying and melt-handling limits. Residual moisture above 0.02 % by mass causes hydrolytic chain scission in the polycarbonate fraction when melt temperature exceeds 280 °C, producing splay, silver streaks, and reduced elongation at break. Desiccant drying at 80 °C to 100 °C for 3 h to 4 h is conventional for centralised material handling. When vacuum or compressed-air drying is used, validation by Karl Fischer titration or a calibrated moisture analyser is required before production start-up.
The melt volume-flow rate is measured at 260 °C and 5 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022, using a die with 2.095 mm diameter and 8.0 mm length. Incoming lots should be tracked as a moving range against the first approved lot to detect shifts in PC molecular weight or ABS rubber content. On a co-rotating twin-screw compounding line with 40:1 L/D and atmospheric vacuum venting, barrel temperatures from 240 °C to 270 °C are typical for the unfilled PC/ABS class, and residence time at melt temperature should be kept below 120 s to limit degradation of the butadiene phase.
Mechanical benchmarks are measured on dry-as-moulded specimens unless the end-use specification requires annealing. Tensile modulus for unfilled PC/ABS is commonly 2000 MPa to 2600 MPa under ISO 527-2:2012, flexural modulus is 2000 MPa to 2800 MPa under ISO 178:2019, and notched Charpy impact at 23 °C ranges from 25 kJ/m² to 60 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1:2020. Linear mould shrinkage under ISO 294-4:2018 is generally 0.4 % to 0.8 %, with the exact value depending on flow orientation, wall thickness, and packing pressure. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion in the range 23 °C to 55 °C under ISO 11359-2:2021 is commonly 6×10-5 K-1 to 8×10-5 K-1 for unfilled PC/ABS.
Quality control for the 3100 class also includes capillary rheometry at shear rates representative of injection moulding. Apparent viscosity at 100 s-1 to 1000 s-1 at 260 °C declines with shear rate because of the shear-thinning behaviour of the PC/ABS melt. This shear sensitivity supports filling of thin ribs and bosses but can produce jetting when the gate is undersized or the melt front enters an open cavity without flow-channel contact. Capillary rheometry results should be used to set injection-speed limits in simulation rather than relying only on melt-flow index.
Electrical enclosure frameworks, appliance control-panel supports, automotive interior mounting brackets, and non-patient-contact medical-device housing components are typical application directions for Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 3100. For unattended appliance enclosures, the material is commonly evaluated against glow-wire flammability at 650 °C to 960 °C under IEC 60695-2-12 and ball-pressure behaviour under IEC 60695-10-2. For automotive trim and structural attachments, short-term heat resistance after paint cure, low-temperature ductility at -30 °C, and resistance to airbag deployment loads are additional design inputs. The absence of a public datasheet for this specific 3100 configuration means that application approval must rely on component-level tests rather than class-typical values.
Process limits appear first as surface defects, short shots, and weak weld lines. At wall thickness below 1.0 mm, injection-pressure demand in thin-wall PC/ABS can exceed 100 MPa, and short shots appear when the clamp force is insufficient for the projected area. Moulding guides for PC/ABS often quote a clamp-force requirement of 0.6 t/cm² to 0.8 t/cm² of projected cavity area, though gate position and flow length require validation by mould-filling simulation.
Flow-front hesitation at ribs and bosses creates weld lines with reduced strength. In PC/ABS, a weld line formed at mould temperatures below 60 °C may retain only 50 % to 70 % of the un-welded tensile strength under ISO 527-2:2012. Raising the mould temperature to 80 °C to 100 °C and raising injection speed can improve molecular diffusion across the flow front. Venting depth should not exceed 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm for PC/ABS to avoid flash while allowing gas evacuation.
Regrind control is necessary because the butadiene phase is sensitive to repeated thermal history. Regrind levels above 20 wt% can reduce notched impact and shift the melt-flow rate. External mould-release chemistry should be confirmed for compatibility, since hydrocarbon-based release agents can accumulate on cavity surfaces and alter downstream paint adhesion. Hot-runner manifold temperatures should remain within 240 °C to 280 °C, and melt residence time should be minimised to prevent black specks and acidic volatiles.
Flame-retardant PC/ABS compounds achieve UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm thickness through halogenated or organophosphorus additive packages. Halogen-free phosphate options commonly reduce the Vicat B50 temperature by 10 °C to 20 °C compared with non-flame-retardant PC/ABS of the same melt-flow class. If the 3100 grade is a non-flame-retardant formulation, it is not appropriate for unattended appliance parts requiring glow-wire ignition temperatures above 850 °C unless independently evaluated. PC/PBT alloys provide improved resistance to alkali and motor oil but are usually less ductile at -20 °C and may display higher moisture absorption than PC/ABS. For applications with continuous chemical contact, the 3100 class should be screened for environmental stress cracking under ISO 22088-2:2006 using the actual service fluid and stress state.
Environmental stress-cracking behaviour is often the deciding factor in metal-replacement programmes. PC/ABS is sensitive to aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and some cutting fluids in the absence of stress-relief annealing. A moulded part with high residual stress from fast filling may crack when exposed to an incompatible fluid at a strain below the short-term tensile elongation limit. Testing under ISO 22088-2:2006 with a constant-strain jig in the actual service chemical is therefore necessary for the 3100 series when the part will contact industrial cleaning agents, hand creams, or fuel vapour.
