Application of Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 2300

In automotive interior carrier substrates, Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 2300 is processed on hydraulic or servo-driven injection presses with clamp force from 800 t to 1,200 t. Published data for this specific Zhongen 2300 configuration is limited; the following values are representative of PC/ABS injection molding grades and must be checked against the supplier certificate of analysis before PPAP submission. The granulate is dried at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant dryer with air dew point below −40 °C; residual moisture above 0.02 wt% measured by ISO 15512:2019 causes splay and local impact-strength loss. Melt temperature is held between 250 °C and 270 °C, mold temperature between 70 °C and 85 °C. At nominal wall thickness of 2.3 mm, flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 190:1 require accumulator-assisted injection speeds above 180 mm/s; excessive shear heating at hot-runner gates below 1.2 mm diameter can reduce polycarbonate-phase viscosity without eliminating weld-line weakness. Black masterbatch is let down at 0.8 wt% to 1.2 wt%, and the resulting melt flow rate at 260 °C/5.0 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022 is used to adjust shot size, holding pressure, and cushion position. Notched Izod impact at 23 °C per ISO 180:2019 is typically reported between 45 kJ/m² and 60 kJ/m² for PC/ABS injection grades; weld-line specimens must be molded separately because gate-weld intersections can fall 40 % below neat material values. Finished carrier components support HVAC ducting and passenger airbag chute attachment. Heat deflection temperature is measured per ISO 75-2:2013, and post-aging dimensional changes after 500 h at 90 °C are checked on a coordinate measuring machine according to ISO 16012:2015. Compliance with interior flammability is tested on the final part according to ISO 3795 or OEM-specific requirements.

What Limits Minimum Wall Thickness in Electric Vehicle Charging Module Housings?

For internal EV charging module housings with wall sections from 1.2 mm to 1.6 mm, the limiting variable is molten-phase pressure loss through ribs and snap-fit undercuts, not heat deflection. The 2300 grade is dried to 0.02 wt% residual moisture and injected at melt temperatures between 245 °C and 265 °C; mold temperatures of 60 °C to 70 °C reduce post-mold shrinkage but increase filling pressure. On presses with 450 t to 650 t clamp force and screw L/D 22:1 or 24:1, transfer pressure at thin-rib entry reaches 120 MPa to 150 MPa. Where a flame-retardant formulation is required, a phosphorus-based masterbatch is let down at 10 wt% to 14 wt%; this addition shifts the melt flow rate and requires re-characterization of the UL 94 rating on finished parts. Target UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is achieved only after full UL file review, and raw granule data cannot be transferred. Glow-wire testing per IEC 60695-2-11 at 850 °C is conducted on the complete enclosure because wall thickness, ventilation slots, and mounting bosses influence the result. Creepage and clearance dimensions are controlled under IEC 61851-1; dimensional checks after 24 h at 23 °C/50 % RH show that thin-wall sections shrink less than thicker bosses, creating sink marks that require gas-counterpressure or conformal cooling in the mold. End products include AC charging module enclosures, cable strain-relief brackets, and internal display frames.

During repeated wipe-down with 70 % isopropanol and diluted quaternary ammonium disinfectants in clinical diagnostic housings, the dominant failure mode is environmental stress cracking at molded-in bosses and ejector pin witness lines, not hydrolytic chain scission. The 2300 grade is used only for non-patient-contact housings and brackets; material suppliers cannot grant biocompatibility approval, and the finished device manufacturer must complete cytotoxicity and irritation testing according to ISO 10993-5 and ISO 10993-10. Colorant masterbatch is limited to 2 wt% because higher organic pigment loadings reduce stress-crack resistance and shift ductile-brittle transition under sub-ambient impact. Drying is performed at 80 °C for 4 h to residual moisture below 0.02 wt%; screw back pressure is maintained at 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa and melt temperature at 245 °C to 260 °C to minimize thermal degradation. The mold temperature is set to 60 °C to 75 °C, and polished cavity surfaces reduce micro-crazes that become initiation sites after repeated disinfectant exposure. Injection speed profile is staged to avoid jetting because free-flow artifacts create high local orientation that concentrates solvent attack. Dimensional inspection after 24 h at 23 °C/50 % RH per ISO 16012:2015 is recommended on spool-to-gate distances above 200 mm. End products include in-vitro diagnostic analyzer covers, laboratory sample rack housings, and medical cart enclosures. The grade is not suitable for steam sterilization above 121 °C or repeated autoclave cycles because PC/ABS undergoes hydrolysis and impact loss; low-temperature hydrogen peroxide plasma or cold sterilant wiping is preferred.

Electrical enclosure creep stability under DIN rail mounting stress

Molded enclosure rear walls for industrial control modules are subjected to continuous flexural load from DIN rail retaining springs, and the key acceptance parameter is creep modulus retained over 1,000 h at 60 °C under 5 MPa to 10 MPa applied stress according to ISO 899-2:2003. The 2300 grade is processed at melt temperature 255 °C to 265 °C and mold temperature 70 °C to 80 °C; regrind from sprues and runners is introduced at up to 15 wt% after drying under the same dew-point conditions. Higher regrind fractions reduce creep modulus and lower Izod impact by 10 % to 15 % in production trials, so the regrind-to-virgin ratio is controlled by granulator screen size and melt-flow monitoring. Bosses designed for thread-forming screws require a pilot hole diameter of 0.8 mm below nominal screw outside diameter and a boss outside diameter of 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm times the screw nominal diameter to prevent hoop-stress cracking at insertion torques between 1.2 N·m and 2.0 N·m. Compliance with empty enclosure impact requirements under IEC 62208 is verified on finished assemblies after 24 h conditioning at -25 °C and 23 °C, because PC/ABS ductility drops at low temperature but not enough to pass all impact classes without rib reinforcement. The final products are DIN rail enclosures, terminal block housings, and compact industrial power supply cases. The material is not rated for direct outdoor ultraviolet exposure without UV-stabilized capstock or coating; xenon-arc testing per ISO 4892-2:2013 on the final part is required for outdoor enclosure claims.

Under intermittent impact loading at gearcase temperatures approaching 80 °C, Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 2300 is used for double-insulated power tool housings because of dimensional stability and rib toughness rather than continuous-load creep resistance. The granulate is dried at 80 °C for 4 h; melt temperature is kept at 250 °C to 265 °C, and mold temperature is set at 65 °C to 75 °C. Packing pressure is held at 60 % to 80 % of injection pressure for 6 s to 10 s, with holding time adjusted to gate seal. Bosses for self-tapping screws are not designed for repeated insertion-removal cycles beyond 3 cycles, because thread-forming screws displace material and create microcracks at the boss root. The end products include angle grinder motor housings, cordless drill handle shells, and jigsaw gearcase covers. Compliance with mechanical strength and protection against electric shock is verified on the final assembly according to IEC 60745-1 and IEC 62841-1. Drop impact from 1.0 m onto concrete is performed after 2 h conditioning at -10 °C; the raw material alone does not guarantee pass or fail because rib design, weld lines, and screw bosses dominate fracture behavior. For high-gloss tool housings, mold surface replication and humidity control below 60 % RH are critical to avoid silver streaks and surface delamination.

When PC/ABS 2300 Replaces Die-Cast Aluminium in Pump Housings

Replacement of cast aluminium in water pump housings is condition-dependent and normally limited to circulating service below 60 °C. Published data for continuous hot-water exposure of this specific Dongguan Zhongen 2300 configuration is limited, so hydrolytic stability must be validated on molded plaques aged in deionized water at 60 °C for 1,000 h according to ISO 175:2010 methodology before production release. The processing window uses melt temperature 250 °C to 260 °C and mold temperature 70 °C to 80 °C; screw back pressure is limited to 0.4 MPa to 0.8 MPa to avoid hydrolytic degradation from residual moisture. Threaded inserts are preferred over thread-forming screws at ports because repeated torque loads above 2.5 N·m can crack bosses exposed to coolant. End products include circulator pump covers, control housings, and impeller shroud components where the fluid is not drinking water and does not continuously exceed 60 °C. The grade is not appropriate for continuous immersion in ethylene glycol-water mixtures above 60 °C or for potable water contact without separate regulatory approval.

Screw Boss Fracture Behavior in Small Appliance Enclosures

Boss failures in small appliance enclosures molded from the 2300 grade initiate at the root radius and propagate along flow-induced orientation when thread-forming screws exceed design torque. The preferred boss geometry is a root radius of 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm, outside diameter of 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm times screw outside diameter, and pilot hole depth of 1.2 mm beyond screw engagement length. Drying is performed at 80 °C for 4 h; melt temperature is kept at 250 °C to 265 °C. Cavity pressure decay after packing is monitored, and switchover from velocity to pressure is set when 95 % to 98 % of the projected area is filled to prevent overpacking at the boss base. Screw insertion torque is limited to 1.0 N·m to 1.5 N·m for self-tapping screws in unreinforced PC/ABS; higher torque requires brass inserts or ultrasonically welded bosses. Final products include blender base housings, food processor shells, and coffee maker structural frames. Glow-wire testing at 750 °C per IEC 60335-1 is performed on the complete enclosure; the material contribution is assessed together with internal wiring, connectors, and insulating barriers.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 2300 is identified as a polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied for injection moulding. The designation 2300 is a supplier-specific commercial model number, not an ISO or UL classification. Without a current certificate of analysis, the exact melt flow rate, filler content, flame-retardant package, and lot-specific mechanical values cannot be certified. Under ISO 1043-1:2011, the polymer abbreviation is PC+ABS. Published independent characterization data for this specific configuration is limited. Table 1 therefore provides a screening envelope for unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS of comparable nominal flow class; it is not a certified specification for individual production lots.

What separates Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 2300 from unmodified PC, ABS, and PC/PBT alloys?

Compared with unmodified polycarbonate, a PC/ABS alloy of this nominal class typically exhibits lower melt viscosity and improved low-temperature notched impact retention. The melt volume-flow rate envelope of 12–25 cm³/10 min at 260 °C/5.0 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022 permits lower injection pressure than many polycarbonate grades requiring melt temperatures above 280 °C. The trade-off is a reduced heat deflection temperature: unfilled PC/ABS often reports HDT/A values between 95 °C and 115 °C under ISO 75-2:2013, while unmodified polycarbonate commonly lies between 120 °C and 135 °C. Against ABS, PC/ABS raises tensile yield stress from typical ABS values of 40–50 MPa to 50–60 MPa under ISO 527-2:2012 and raises Vicat B/50 values from 90–105 °C to 120–135 °C under ISO 306:2022. Against PC/PBT, PC/ABS is generally selected for higher notched impact and better melt flow, while PC/PBT is preferred where resistance to fuels, oils, and alkaline cleaning agents is critical. These comparisons are class-level and must be confirmed for grade 2300 before part approval.

Within a supplier’s PC/ABS range, the 2300 designation may be positioned between low-flow structural grades and high-flow thin-wall grades. Low-flow grades often have MVR below 10 cm³/10 min and are used for thick-wall structural parts requiring high impact. High-flow grades may exceed 30 cm³/10 min and fill thin electronic housings more easily but can show lower weld-line strength and greater melt-temperature sensitivity. The exact flow position of 2300 should be obtained from the supplier’s MVR specification and viscosity curve, not inferred from the grade number alone.

Processing Boundaries and Thermal Degradation Limits

Residual moisture must be controlled before melt processing. Pellets should be dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of -30 °C or lower at 80–95 °C for 3–4 h, targeting a moisture content below 0.02 % by weight when measured by ISO 15512:2019. If the material has been exposed to 60 % relative humidity or higher, hopper residence should be extended to 4–6 h. Inadequately dried melt produces splay, silver streaks, and weak weld lines because water hydrolyzes the polycarbonate segment and reduces molecular weight.

The melt temperature window is 240–270 °C. A barrel profile from 230 °C in the rear zone to 260 °C at the nozzle is typical, with hot-runner manifolds held between 240 °C and 260 °C. Melt temperature above 280 °C should be avoided for residence times above 5–8 min; polycarbonate degradation can produce brown streaks, viscosity drift, and acidic volatiles. When interruptions exceed 10 min, the barrel should be purged with a medium-viscosity PC or PC/ABS purge compound.

Mould surface temperature should be 60–90 °C. Lower mould temperatures can increase locked-in stress and reduce weld-line strength; higher temperatures improve gloss and dimensional stability but lengthen cycle time. On a general-purpose injection screw with L/D 20:1 and compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1, screw speed should remain below 100 rpm; excessive shear heating can locally exceed the set melt temperature and cause yellow streaks. Backpressure between 0.5–1.0 MPa and a melt cushion of 3–6 mm are typical starting conditions on machines with clamp forces from 800 kN to 1250 kN.

Tooling limits include vent depth of 0.02–0.04 mm, vent width of 3–6 mm, and gate thickness of at least 50 % of the nominal wall thickness. Pinpoint gates smaller than 0.8 mm can cause jetting and splay. Rib thickness should be 0.5–0.7 times the nominal wall thickness; wall-thickness changes above 25 % can create sinks or voids. Draft angles of 0.5–1.0° per side are typical for textured surfaces to prevent ejection drag marks.

Chemical exposure limits must also be observed. The material should not be processed in barrels previously used for PVC or acetal without thorough purging because acid-catalyzed decomposition of PVC can generate hydrogen chloride and induce polycarbonate chain scission. Amine-based melt additives or external mould releases should be avoided: primary and secondary amines can attack the carbonate linkage and lower melt viscosity. Regrind up to 20 wt % may be used if dried and contamination-free; higher levels can reduce Charpy impact by more than 10 % in thick sections, although this is a class-level estimate and must be confirmed for 2300.

When low-temperature impact retention becomes a primary ranking criterion

When a part is specified for impact at −30 °C, notched Charpy values for unfilled PC/ABS of this class generally fall between 10 kJ/m² and 25 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1/1eA, while room-temperature values often reach 35–60 kJ/m². The exact ductile-to-brittle transition depends on rubber content, butadiene morphology, and moulded skin orientation. The 2300 designation cannot be presumed to retain low-temperature ductility without a grade-specific impact curve. If a competing PC/ABS grade is advertised as high-impact, the relevant comparison is the entire notched impact curve from 23 °C to −40 °C, not a single data point.

Weld-line tensile strength in unfilled PC/ABS may fall to 40–60 % of bulk tensile strength. Gate positions should therefore locate weld lines away from high-stress areas. For parts requiring flame retardancy, general-purpose PC/ABS is often HB under UL 94, not V-0. If flame-retardant performance is required at thin sections, a separate FR grade or a supplier UL Yellow Card at the minimum use thickness is necessary.

On production-scale injection equipment with clamp forces between 800 kN and 1250 kN, the material is typically assessed for interior automotive trim carriers, lower dashboard components, and electronic enclosure frames at wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.0 mm. Short shots in such tools are normally observed when melt temperature falls below 240 °C or when the flow length-to-thickness ratio exceeds 150:1 with a cold runner. Applications involving direct contact with aggressive greases, brake fluids, or strong alkaline cleaners require chemical compatibility testing according to the OEM method; PC/ABS is generally less resistant to these media than PC/PBT or PBT/ASA blends.

Table 2. Compliance verification matrix for Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 2300 parts
Requirement Standard or regulation Verification scope
Restriction of hazardous substances RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE; supplier declaration required for each lot
REACH communication Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 SVHC candidate list; article communication under Article 33 where applicable
Flammability classification UL 94 Thickness-specific HB or V rating; verify supplier UL Yellow Card for minimum use thickness
Resin identification ISO 1043-1:2011 PC+ABS abbreviation for marking and material declarations
Plastics part marking ISO 11469:2016 Part marking to identify polymer family and relevant modifiers
Glow-wire ignition IEC 60695-2-11 Required for unattended appliance housings; evaluate at end-product wall thickness

For thin-wall electronic enclosure components with nominal wall thickness between 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm, the material is typically assessed for mould fill, flame rating, and resistance to hand creams and cleaning agents. Evaluation under IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire ignition temperature and UL 94 at the minimum part thickness is required before production approval; general-purpose PC/ABS is often HB, not V-0, unless a flame-retardant variant is specified. Parts that pass these evaluations are then subjected to thermal cycling between −40 °C and 85 °C for warranty-relevant validation before series release.
