In instrument panel carrier production, black PC/ABS 1514BK is introduced at a regrind fraction no greater than 20% when combined with virgin automotive interior grade. The blend is typically specified in a 65/35 PC-to-ABS mass ratio to balance stiffness, low-temperature ductility, and flow length for large thin-wall tools. Pre-drying is set at 100°C for 4 h using a dehumidifying dryer with a dew point at or below -40°C. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle is maintained between 250°C and 270°C, while the tool surface is held between 70°C and 90°C. These settings are required because residual moisture above 0.02% produces silver streaking and reduces ISO 179-1 Charpy notched impact. Large dashboard carriers weighing above 1.5 kg are typically molded on machines with clamp force from 400 t to 600 t. Screw L/D ratio of 25:1 is adequate; however, adiabatic shear heating within the screw channel can lift melt temperature beyond the nominal setting when reciprocating screw recovery speeds exceed 150 rpm. Material feed zone temperature is held below 80°C to prevent premature melting and bridge blockage at the hopper throat. Compliance for automotive interior components requires VDA 278 VOC and FOG testing, DIN 75201 method B fogging on the finished part, and ignition resistance under FMVSS 302 in the United States or ISO 3795 in export markets. Low-gloss black surfaces are achieved through mold texturing rather than additive packages because high mold polish creates visible weld line contrast. The processing conflict in this application is the narrow window between required melt fluidity for thin rib sections and thermal decomposition onset at approximately 280°C. Published data for 1514BK under extended residence times in hot-runner systems is limited; processors should conduct a residence-time study with melt viscosity through ISO 1133-1:2022 before series production. Terminal components include instrument panel lower covers, center console side panels, glove box back panels, and door panel insert substrates.
Enclosures for AC-DC power adapters, fast-charge wall units, and uninterruptible power supply front panels are evaluated against IEC 62368-1 clause 4.4.5 for fire containment and against IEC 60695-2-11 for glow wire ignition at 750°C. Black PC/ABS 1514BK is processed at a nominal wall thickness of 1.8 mm to 2.5 mm to achieve UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm in third-party certification programs. The melt temperature is restricted to the lower half of the processing window, between 240°C and 260°C, to minimize exposure of the flame-retardant package to unnecessary thermal history. Injection velocity is held moderate; shear rates above 20,000 s⁻¹ do not improve fill of thin snap features but do increase gate blush and flow hesitation marks. Mold surface temperature from 60°C to 80°C is sufficient for acceptable replication of textured surfaces, while higher mold temperatures extend cycle time without measurable gain in UL 94 V-0 performance. Electrical safety testing includes ball pressure at 125°C per IEC 60695-10-2 and tracking resistance per IEC 60112, where a comparative tracking index of 250 V or higher is commonly required for pluggable equipment type A. Black pigmentation alone does not confer antistatic dissipation; volume resistivity must be checked under ASTM D257 or IEC 61340-2-3 when the application requires charge decay times below 2 s. Drop resistance is validated through IEC 60068-2-31 fall tests from 1.0 m onto a concrete floor after conditioning at -20°C. The operational boundary is clear: continuous service above 90°C creates long-term embrittlement in ABS-rich phases; therefore power adapters with internal component temperatures above that level require an alternative high-heat PC/ABS or polycarbonate grade. Terminal products include 45 W USB-C travel adapters, desktop charger housings, UPS battery enclosure fronts, and smart plug shells.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power adapter enclosure | IEC 62368-1 / UL 94 | Glow wire 750°C, flame at 1.5 mm | V-0 and no ignition to cotton indicator | Black pigment does not confer antistatic dissipation |
| Automotive interior trim | VDA 278 / DIN 75201 | Pre-dry 100°C, 4 h | OEM fogging limit, FMVSS 302 pass | Regrind fraction not to exceed 20% |
| EV charging wallbox | UL 746C / IEC 60695-2-11 | Xenon arc 1000 h, Delta E below 3.0 | UL 94 5VA at 3.0 mm | Relative thermal index above 85°C required |
| Power tool clam shell | IEC 60745 / ISO 60068-2-31 | Drop 1.0 m at -20°C | No crack, no panel separation | Avoid acetone and aromatic hydrocarbon cleaning agents |
Outdoor AC wallbox enclosures and charging gun shells are typically engineered with a PC-rich blend ratio close to 70/30 because the ABS phase in lower-PC formulations loses impact after 1000 h of xenon arc exposure. The material is pre-dried to 0.01% residual moisture using a vacuum dryer at 105°C for 4 h to 6 h. Melt temperature at the nozzle is set between 260°C and 275°C, while the tool is maintained at 80°C to 100°C to minimize molded-in stress in wall sections of 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm. Outdoor suitability is verified through UL 746C f1 tests, which combine UV resistance, water immersion, and flammability retention over 1000 h. Delta E after 1000 h under ISO 4892-2 xenon arc testing is commonly specified below 3.0 for black pigmented grades. Flame retardance is assessed with UL 94 5VA at 3.0 mm, a requirement for unattended equipment installed in public areas. The contactor and terminal block region inside a wallbox can reach 85°C during 32 A continuous charging; the selected grade must have a UL 746B relative thermal index above that service temperature. Thermal expansion mismatch between the plastic enclosure and metal DIN rail brackets generates stress concentrations at threaded inserts; ultrasonic insertion of brass inserts is preferred over molded-in inserts for field-replaced connectors. Salt spray exposure per IEC 60068-2-52 method 3 is imposed for coastal installations, with visual inspection after 21 days for surface bloom and cracking. Black grades are selected because the carbon black package masks airborne particulate staining and improves UV absorption; however, the same carbon black raises surface temperature under direct sunlight by approximately 15°C compared with white equivalents, so continuous service limits must be recalculated for solar-loaded enclosures. Published data for 1514BK in four-season outdoor trials is limited. Terminal products include 7 kW wallbox housings, 22 kW three-phase charging station front covers, charging gun outer shells, and cable management brackets.
Before non-invasive diagnostic device enclosures can be entered into ISO 10993 biological evaluation, the processor must confirm that the carbon black and flame-retardant package in 1514BK is available in a biocompatibility documentation set. The grade is generally not supplied with a full ISO 10993 certificate; therefore evaluation under ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity and ISO 10993-10 for skin sensitization must be performed on representative molded plaques. Processing for medical enclosures occurs in an ISO Class 8 cleanroom, with ejection air filtered to 0.3 μm and mold release agents omitted or replaced by food-grade silicone-free sprays. The material is dried at 100°C for 4 h on a closed-loop desiccant dryer. Melt temperature is maintained between 245°C and 265°C, and cooling time in the mold is extended by 10% compared with consumer electronics to prevent post-mold shrinkage that would affect sealing tolerances. Medical device enclosures are frequently cleaned with quaternary ammonium compounds, 70% isopropanol, or 3% hydrogen peroxide. PC/ABS grades show environmental stress cracking when exposed to strong oxidizing disinfectants at elevated temperature; compatibility tests following ASTM D543 method A are required for each cleaner. Steam autoclave sterilization at 121°C is outside the continuous use range of standard PC/ABS because the Vicat softening temperature measured under ISO 306 method B50 is commonly between 125°C and 140°C; only short excursions with low mechanical load are acceptable. Gamma sterilization is possible but produces measurable chain scission and slight yellowing even in black grades; mechanical retention after 25 kGy and 50 kGy doses must be validated per ISO 11137-2. Published data for 1514BK under radiation sterilization is limited. End products include ultrasound scanner outer shells, mobile diagnostic cart housing panels, point-of-care analyzer front housings, and hospital bed control panel base plates.
Structural parts in 5G base stations that remain outside the RF-transparent window include power module housings, radio unit mounting frames, and cable management trays. The black colorant package in 1514BK is intentionally non-transparent; therefore the material must not be assigned to radome or antenna cover functions where signal attenuation is specified below 0.5 dB at 3.5 GHz. For structural enclosures, the key material demands are resistance to long-term outdoor heat, condensation, and mechanical vibration. The blend is dried to 0.02% residual moisture before processing. Injection temperatures between 250°C and 270°C are used with mold temperatures at 80°C to 95°C to reduce molded-in stress around metallic heat-sink inserts. The clamping force on the injection unit must be sufficient to prevent flash in multi-cavity tools with projected areas above 1200 cm². Thermal cycling tests often follow IEC 60068-2-14 with temperature extremes from -40°C to 85°C and dwell times of 30 min per extreme. Impact strength after cycling is verified with ISO 179-1 Charpy notched at -30°C. Flame retardance is specified to UL 94 V-0 at 2.0 mm. Electrical safety is assessed under IEC 62368-1 section 4.7 for resistance to external heat. Salt fog exposure to IEC 60068-2-52 for 28 days is common for coastal base station equipment. The ABS phase in PC/ABS can hydrolyze under prolonged condensation when combined with metal-ion contamination from brass inserts; use of stainless steel or coated inserts reduces this risk. Published dielectric data for 1514BK is limited; if a structural component is later reclassified as RF-adjacent, the grade must be reassessed through dielectric constant and loss tangent measurement under ASTM D2520 or an equivalent split-post resonator method. Terminal components include radio unit bottom housings, antenna mounting brackets, power distribution module covers, and fiber junction box panels.

At the mold filling stage, the gear housing of a cordless angle grinder made from 1514BK must fill rib features with a thickness ratio to nominal wall of 0.5 to 0.7. A melt temperature of 250°C to 270°C and a mold temperature of 60°C to 80°C are maintained. Tool wall stock is specified at 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm to survive drop loads. The molded shells are post-cooled on a robotic end-of-arm fixture for an additional 15 s to avoid dimensional bow in the split-line plane. Torque-bearing bosses are designed with outer diameters of 2.5 to 3.0 times the thread diameter and a minimum boss height of 2.0 times the thread engagement length, preventing boss cracking during power tool assembly. Impact performance is evaluated per ISO 60068-2-31 drop from 1.0 m after conditioning at -20°C. Chemical resistance to gear lubricants, cutting fluids, and lithium-ion battery electrolyte is screened through ASTM D543 method B for 72 h at 23°C; visual inspection must show no crazing or softening. Double-insulated power tools demand reinforced insulation properties; the enclosure must pass IEC 60695-2-11 glow wire at 750°C and UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm. Overmolding with TPE for vibration-damped grips requires verification of adhesion through ISO 19095-2 or a 90° peel fixture; peak peel strength above 2 N/mm is generally needed. Acetone and aromatic hydrocarbons are incompatible with ABS domains; cleaning stations must use isopropanol at a concentration not exceeding 70%. End products include cordless drill motor housings, angle grinder gear covers, hammer drill clam shells, and 18 V battery pack top covers.
Appliance control panels molded from black PC/ABS 1514BK are typically specified with a nominal wall thickness of 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm. The key stress is chemical attack from alkaline dishwasher detergents and rinse aids containing nonionic surfactants. Resistance is screened under ISO 22088-3 bent-strip immersion for 48 h to 72 h at 23°C; a strain level of 0.5% is commonly used to represent assembled screw boss stress. Flame retardance is validated with IEC 60695-2-11 glow wire at 750°C for unattended appliance components and with UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm. Processing uses melt temperatures from 240°C to 260°C and mold surfaces textured to 9–11 VDI roughness to hide scratches and fingerprint marks. High-gloss black control panels are avoided unless a UV-curable topcoat is applied; gloss reductions below 5 GU at 60° are easier to maintain in service. The ABS phase in 1514BK contributes to notched impact sensitivity; therefore corner radii on control panel openings are specified no smaller than 0.5 mm to avoid stress concentration during snap-fit assembly. Creep under constant snap deflection is assessed through ISO 899-1 for 1000 h at 60°C; retained deflection force must remain above 70% of initial value. Vibration testing per IEC 60068-2-6 for control panels mounted on washing machines is carried out at 10 Hz to 500 Hz with a sweep rate of 1 octave/min. PCB spacers and snap features must not combine high fill pressure with gate blush; sequential valve gating reduces visible flow fronts in long control panel surfaces exceeding 400 mm. End products include washing machine front control panels, refrigerator in-door ice maker bezels, microwave oven fascia frames, and dishwasher door vent trims.

Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 1514BK is a black, unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied as cylindrical pellets. The designation 1514BK identifies a specific black pigment package within the manufacturer’s 15-series PC/ABS portfolio. Published data for this exact configuration is limited in open industrial databases; therefore, batch-specific values should be taken only from the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis. The material class is selected where a balance of heat resistance, low-temperature notched impact strength, dimensional stability, and surface appearance is required. Candidate use areas for this class include automotive interior lower trim substrates, appliance control-panel housings, and business machine covers where flammability class HB at 1.5 mm is sufficient under IEC 60695-11-10. The melt phase is sensitive to water, so processing practice rather than dry-blend formulation determines final mechanical properties. The grade is typically delivered with residual moisture below 0.02% when measured by ISO 15512; however, storage in opened bags at relative humidity above 60% makes pre-drying compulsory before melt processing.
Before molding or extrusion, PC/ABS 1514BK requires a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40°C or lower. Typical drying conditions are 80°C to 90°C for 3 h to 4 h, with hopper loader openings minimized to avoid re-exposure to ambient air. If the material has been exposed to high humidity for more than 8 h, extend drying to 6 h at 80°C and verify residual moisture by Karl Fischer titration according to ISO 15512 before processing. Overdrying beyond 8 h at 90°C can yellow the PC phase and shift melt volume-flow rate into the upper region of the specification; the shift is detectable within 1 h using ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260°C and 5 kg. The material should not be processed in a vented barrel without vacuum because PC hydrolysis products degrade impact strength and generate surface splay. A separate drying hopper with insulated hoses is recommended when the molding cell is located in a non-air-conditioned building with ambient dew point above 12°C.
Residence time is controlled by melt temperature, screw geometry, and shot-size-to-barrel-capacity ratio. The recommended melt temperature window for unfilled black PC/ABS is 250°C to 280°C, with the nozzle set 5°C to 10°C below the front zone to prevent drool. A general-purpose three-zone injection screw with an L/D of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is adequate; a low-shear barrier screw can reduce black speck formation at high screw speeds. Start-up barrel profile on a 3500 kN clamp force machine with a 40 mm diameter screw is rear 240°C, middle 260°C, front 270°C, and nozzle 265°C. The shot size should be kept between 40% and 70% of barrel capacity. If shot size falls below 30%, residence time increases and the risk of polycarbonate chain scission rises; if shot size exceeds 75%, temperature homogeneity at the screw tip may be insufficient.
At the tool, mold temperature is set at 60°C to 90°C. The upper limit is preferred for parts with long flow lengths or weld lines, but it extends cooling time. Back pressure is maintained at 0.3 MPa to 0.7 MPa, and screw rotation is set to 50 rpm to 80 rpm to limit shear heating. Injection speed should be sufficient to fill the cavity in 0.5 s to 2.5 s for thin-wall sections of 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm; excessive speed causes jetting at the gate and optically visible flow lines. Cushion should be stable at 5 mm to 8 mm. Hold pressure is typically 50% to 70% of peak injection pressure, and gate freeze time is confirmed by weight stability or cavity pressure measurement. Carbon black requires sufficient distributive mixing, not high shear; a shear section that raises melt temperature above 285°C can cause local black speck from pigment agglomerates and gloss deviation on Class A surfaces. Residence time at melt temperatures above 270°C should not exceed 5 min; longer periods result in yellowing and a drop in notched impact strength measured under ISO 179-1/1eA.
Melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 is used as an incoming inspection proxy for molecular weight. A change of 3 cm³/10 min from the supplier’s baseline can indicate hydrolytic damage or excessive regrind. The relative viscosity ratio between dried and wet samples is not an adequate substitute for Karl Fischer moisture. When MFR falls below the control limit, the feed zone temperature should be raised in 5°C increments, not by increasing back pressure; excessive back pressure can create shear heating and black speck. When MFR exceeds the control limit, reduce maximum melt temperature to 250°C and shorten residence time to below 3 min.
Thin-wall filling capability depends on flow length-to-wall-thickness ratio and gate design. For a spiral-flow mold with a 2.0 mm wall section evaluated by ASTM D3123-09 at a melt temperature of 270°C and mold temperature of 80°C, representative unfilled PC/ABS flow length can reach 600 mm to 900 mm before short shot occurs. This range is not a specification for 1514BK; it serves only as a tool-design starting point. Direct gates, fan gates, or tab gates with a land length of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm are preferred. Tunnel gates should be located away from visible surfaces because carbon black can produce gloss differences. When wall thickness drops below 1.2 mm, the maximum recommended flow length decreases sharply, and the molding window narrows to a melt temperature of 270°C to 280°C, a mold temperature of 85°C to 90°C, and high injection speed; published data for this specific configuration in sub-1.0 mm sections is limited.
Mechanical, thermal, and rheological reference values for a black unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS injection-molding grade are shown below. Exact values for Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 1514BK must be obtained from the batch certificate; the ranges are industrial reference data, not a substitute for supplier specification. Specimen preparation should follow ISO 20753 and ISO 294-1 to reduce orientation effects.

The PC phase in 1514BK is susceptible to stress cracking when residual molded-in stress is combined with aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, or chlorinated solvents. Cleaning agents containing acetone, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, or paint thinners should not be used on molded parts or on tool surfaces before molding because absorbed solvent can reduce notched impact strength measured under ISO 179-1/1eA and promote microcracking at weld lines. Mold release agents based on amine compounds are incompatible with polycarbonate and should be avoided; they can initiate polycarbonate degradation at the melt boundary and produce plate-out on the core, which then transfers to the part surface. If external release is required, a dilute silicone-free, non-amine mold release should be validated by surface adhesion testing using ISO 2409 or a similar cross-cut method. Hydrocarbon-based greases and hydraulic oils on tie bars or platen seals should be isolated from the material feed stream because migration into the feed throat can create black speck contamination.
In chemical service, aqueous acid or strong alkaline environments are not recommended for PC/ABS at elevated temperature. Stress crack resistance is evaluated by immersion or bent-beam testing under ISO 22088-2 using a 0.5% strain level; published data for this specific configuration is limited, so beverage, medical, or industrial chemical service must be qualified. The material should not be exposed to steam autoclave cycles unless long-term mechanical testing under ISO 527-2 and ISO 178 has been completed on the actual molding. Food-contact status must not be assumed; compliance with FDA 21 CFR or EU Regulation 10/2011 is not an inherent property of this grade.
If the same barrel was previously used for a flame-retardant PC/ABS, residual phosphorus additive migration kinetics can produce plate-out on the screw root and check ring. The transition procedure should include a high-viscosity PC-compatible purging compound at 280°C, followed by 1514BK regrind purge, until the nozzle drool is free of color streaks and the melt flow rate is within the supplier’s control limit under ISO 1133-1:2022.
Carbon black pigment affects local cooling rate and can nucleate crystallization in semi-crystalline components, but PC/ABS is amorphous; therefore the directionality of mold shrinkage arises primarily from flow-induced orientation and packing. Typical mold shrinkage for unfilled PC/ABS measured on a 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaque under ISO 294-4 is 0.5% to 0.7% in flow direction and 0.5% to 0.7% in transverse direction. Black grades may require an additional 0.02% to 0.05% adjustment in gated regions because carbon black influences heat transfer and the solidification front. Tooling should be pre-conditioned with a minimum of 15 molding cycles before dimensional capability studies are run according to ISO 294-4.
For visible housings, color consistency is evaluated by CIELAB spectrophotometry using D65, 10° observer geometry under ISO 11664-4. A ΔE limit of 0.5 CIELAB units from an agreed master plaque is common for visible black parts. The carbon black package also increases opacity and provides some UV screening, but outdoor service life must be validated by ISO 4892-2 or ISO 4892-3 accelerated weathering on the actual part geometry. Published data for this product’s UV stabilizer package is limited; for non-black or light-aging critical applications, the manufacturer should supply weathering data.
Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 1514BK differs from other PC/ABS products primarily in pigmentation, flame-retardant chemistry, and filler content. It is not a flame-retardant grade; a UL 94 yellow card should not be assumed for 1514BK. For electrical enclosure applications where flammability class V-0 at 1.5 mm is required, a halogen-free or brominated flame-retardant PC/ABS should be selected instead. Flame-retardant grades typically contain phosphorus-based or halogenated species that lower thermal stability and may cause mold deposit; substitution into 1514BK tooling requires a purging compound and a verification run because residues can accelerate black speck formation. Glass-fiber-reinforced grades offer higher tensile strength and heat deflection temperature but lose notched impact strength and produce anisotropic warpage. The following ranges illustrate the performance differences.
| Property | Test method | 1514BK class | FR PC/ABS | GF20 PC/ABS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Density | ISO 1183-1 | 1.12–1.15 g/cm³ | 1.18–1.22 g/cm³ | 1.28–1.34 g/cm³ |

| HDT 1.8 MPa | ISO 75-2/A | 95–105°C | 85–100°C | 130–140°C |
| Flammability at 1.5 mm | IEC 60695-11-10 | HB expected | V-0 | HB expected |
Compared with natural or light-colored PC/ABS of the same base resin, the black 1514BK grade can show a slightly higher melt volume-flow rate because carbon black may alter thermal conductivity and screw recovery. This effect is generally within 1–2 cm³/10 min when measured by ISO 1133-1:2022 and should not be used to hide degraded material. Compared with mineral-filled PC/ABS, 1514BK offers lower density and smoother surface, but lower heat deflection temperature and lower flexural modulus; mineral-filled grades may reach 3000 MPa flexural modulus under ISO 178, while this class remains below 2600 MPa. Compared with PBT/PC blends, 1514BK has better low-temperature impact but poorer chemical resistance to fuels and lower continuous operating temperature in contact with hot alkaline solutions; PBT/PC grades are often selected for fuel vapor exposure. Selection between these products requires data from ISO 527-2, ISO 179-1/1eA, ISO 75-2, and chemical immersion tests on the final part geometry.
Batch traceability for Dongguan Zhongen PC/ABS 1514BK should include lot number, production date, and net mass on the bag label. The certificate of analysis should report moisture content, melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022, density under ISO 1183-1, and Charpy notched impact under ISO 179-1/1eA. Color acceptance is made against an agreed master plaque. If the buyer requests REACH SVHC or RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II declarations, these should be tied to the same lot. Material stored at or below 30°C in unopened, sealed packaging retains its drying state; paper or non-foil packaging that is damaged must be treated as wet material and dried for 4 h at 80°C before use.
Regrind derived from sprues, runners, and rejected parts can be reincorporated at 10 wt% to 20 wt% if the feed stream is dried to 0.02% residual moisture and the regrind particle size is consistent. Higher regrind fractions increase the surface area exposed to thermal history and broaden the residence-time distribution; this can raise melt volume-flow rate by 1–3 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 and lower notched impact under ISO 179-1/1eA. Regrind should be screened with a 2 mm mesh to remove fines and should not be mixed with other polymer families. For black parts, carbon black pigment agglomerates are visible as black speck or local gloss variation; a melt filter of 200–300 µm mesh in the nozzle or hot runner manifold is recommended only if pressure drop is acceptable and the filter is inspected every 4 h.
To maintain melt stability across color changes, production-scale experience with similar black PC/ABS grades indicates that a stable 20 wt% regrind stream on a 1600 kN machine is usually possible if drying is maintained and the screw is purged with a polycarbonate-compatible purging compound at the end of each run. Any deviation in smell, splay, or black speck count should trigger ISO 1133-1 melt flow testing and a moisture check before further molding.
